(And yes the above Neil MacKeigan is the one to whom I referred). I dug through some of my stuff and here is the story as I see it. Did Bessie Hunt die young? Given that Neil MacKeigan and Bessie Hunt had 6 children I am going to go out on a limb and say she did NOT die really young. Why to I think she had six children? Because of the obit for her son, Donald. Cape Breton Post March 4, 1992 page 23 Donald MacKeigan 57, Louisbourg Donald H. MacKeigan, 57, Louisbourg, died Monday, March 2, 1992, at his residence. Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Neil and Bessie (Hunt) MacKeigan. He was employed with the maintenance department for the Town of Louisbourg. He is survived by two sisters, Isabel Kennedy, Louisbourg and Shirley Kavanaugh, Catalina, Nfld. and two brothers, John George and Seward, Louisbourg. He was predeceased by a sister, Florence, in infancy. The late Mr. MacKeigan will be in W. A. Chant Funeral Home, Louisbourg, today after 2 p.m. The funeral services will be held in Zion Presbyterian Church, Friday at 10:30 a.m. with rev. K. MacLeod officiating. Interment will be made in Loch End Cemetery. ~~~~ I like the name of Florence and especially like the name of Seward as children of Bessie Hunt MacKeigan. (Charles Alfred Hunt and Flora Gillis had a son Seward.) CB Post obit Jan 22, 2003 Seward Hunt 87, Marion Bridge Seward Thomas Hunt, 87, of Gabarus Highway, Marion Bridge, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, Jan. 20, 2003. Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Charles and Flora (Gillis) Hunt. Seward was an adherent of St. Columba Church, Marion Bridge. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 162. In 1981, Seward retired from the Devco International Pier after 40 years of service. Surviving are his daughters, Mary (Keith) Clarke and Chardonna, both of Marion Bridge; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dolly (Morrison) in 1988, sisters, Gladys, Bessie, Julia, Reatha and Christina and brothers, Jim, John George, Alf, Alex and Trueman. There will be no visitation. A private interment service will be held at a later date in Riverview Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydmemchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ~~~~~ Now lets throw in a kink. Is it "possible" that the Bessie Hunt wife of Neil MacKeigan (per Donald MacKeigan obit) and the Bessie Hunt, daughter of Flora Gillis, (per Seward Hunt obit) are two different Bessies? Yes. I find it highly unlikely though. My next step if I had access to the Halifax Herald microfilm would be to check the Feb 12, 1969 edition for the obit for Mrs. Bessie MacKeigan who died in Louisbourg and is purported to be in that edition. She may have had an obit in the Cape Breton Post also. (I would like to think that the UCCB library still has microfilm of both the Halifax Herald & Cape Breton Post as I have viewed such film there in the somewhat distant past.) -- Ron

    3. You are welcome Bob; I hope you didn't miss this post by Ron McDougall < ronaldmcdougall@prodigy.net> "If I was looking for a husband for Bessie Hunt, daughter of CAH & FG, I'd start with Neil MacKeigan." ..................... I found no marriage record for this couple but did find with my sister's help a Neil MacKeigan on the NSARMS site: Neil Alexander MacKeigan, died 1952 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton County Item can be found in Registration Year: 1952 - Book: 1952 - Page: 4644 - Number His wife was listed a BESSIE MACKEIGAN, Louisbourg. I can't tell you for sure if this Bessie signed by her married name instead of her maiden name or not. Many records where it asks the spouces name, many women used their married name instead of the maiden name. This maybe one of them. Nor can I tell you if this is the "Bessie Hunt" you are looking for. Though we expect primary records to be 100 % accurate, they aren't always. Many records, whether it is a birth, baptism, marriage or death are not always so. It can take a lot of tracking when you suspect a primary record is flawed. It can be done, and of course it can take time and help from others researching the same family. Please don't assume that your "Bessie" died young, it would be far better to note 'no further information' on her, until such time as something becomes available to tell you exactly, when and where she died. 3. Juanita, thank you for catching my mistake. This was the only marriage of a Bessie Hunt and time frame was OK for the Bessie dau of Charles and Florence, born 1905. This is a good example of a good reason to not trust the Census info too much. I cannot find any record in NSHVS for Bessie. I will assume she died young and her death was not recorded. I did find Julia Edna Hunt married to Joseph Magee in 1923 and that Charles Hunt was born in Romeo, NF. bob gillis Juanita MacDonald wrote: > Hello Bob; > > This entry you listed *** Bessie 1905, married William Henderson > Maloney, 1920 *** as being a dau of Charles Alfred Hunt & Florence > Gillis. > > I have in my data base that BESSIE HUNT b. Hi Juanita Having finally tracked down my great-grandfather to Cape-Breton - he "disappeared" from Liverpool in 1907 - then I must heartily endorse your comments as far as online resources are concerned. I'm already indebted to the work of Maureen Burton McNeil and Wayne Macvicar, and I look forward to joining the Cape Breton Genealogy & Historical Association. I hope that will enable me to access any records that are not online, as well as being seen to support local history and genealogy in the area in which my great-grandfather lived for forty-odd years and ended his life. Best wishes. Paul

That relationship is found in the 1911 census BUT that Bessie isn't the Bessie who married in 1920. If you are asking if he is Trueman, son of Flora Gillis Hunt, then the answer would be NO. Trueman, son of Flora Gillis Hunt, has been residing on the dirt side of the Loch End Cemetery sod since 1993. Alfred, son of Flora Gillis Hunt, has also gone on to his big reward. >There are 4 Hunts in Louisburg per 411.ca. > You named only two of the four Louisbourg Hunts in your above comment. As you may have had a special reason for doing so, I'll follow suit and leave them unnamed. (I would think that one of the unnamed is the son of Alexander Hunt b. 1903). -- Ron

    3. Hello Bob; The best place to start is with this list, if it is CapeBreton folks you are looking for. Name the couple, their children (their spouces if known), last known place of residence and any pertinent details, to help identify them. More than likely someone may have them in their data base, know of them or someone who does. Or you maybe lucky and one of the living descendants does genealogy and is on the list. I don't know whether you have tried this or not, but I take a surname and work backwards yr by yr from 1957, and go through the death records on line at NSARMS. I usually limit it to the last county the family resided in, and than work out from there, to other counties. By doing so I have discovered children I was not aware of. A wife's full name, when I've only had her first or surname. A link to other family members when it is a niece, nephew or brother/sister-in-law who were the informant for the death record. Its really great to use for those old time obits on the CapeBreton Genweb, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nscpbret/CBIOBITS/qryindex.htm where they say " Mr/Mrs. So & So died, [day, month, yr] and he/she is survived by husband/wife, 4 sons and 3 daughters." Its not so hot for the years 1908-1918, as very little information is given other than birth date (not always included or correct), residence (community), married (no spouce's name), cause. You pretty well have to be very familiar with a particular family, to pin the person down to being someone you are looking for. Unless the old obit gives a little more detail, other than name rank and serial number. City directories, old phone books, voters lists, are useful if you have access to them or know someone who does. As I know you are looking for Gillis, I will give you the names of Gillis, in the GlaceBay district who had a phone in 1935. GILLIS, ANGUS J, Dominion # 1 ..... 619-31 GILLIS, JAMES, 9 Berkely .....523-1 GILLIS, JOSEPH, 35 South ..... 57-2 GILLIS, MALCOLM, 33 Water .....175-2 GILLIS, N J, 137 Main ..... 139 GILLIS, ROD, 71 Union .....753-2 GILLIS, SARAH Mrs. 16 Concord .....828 You can write to a historical society in the area where the family lived. They may know the family or where they went if they left the area. Post your query on a 'Surname' Genforum and a surname mailing list. I don't know if you are a member of CBGHA or not. If not you might consider joining, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nscbgha/JOIN.html and posting your family/or query there. Another avenue to try is to write to the Cape Breton Post, and ask them to post your query in 'letters to the editor.' Many of us forget about newspapers, with the internet being so convenient. Yet many still do not own a computer or want access to them. And of course you have this list archives http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/NS-CAPE-BRETON/ and may discover a posting related to information you are looking for.
