    1. [NS-CB] Cape Breton Nicknames - some history
    2. Barbara Ulrich
    3. My great-grandpa, Nicholas McDonald from Whiteside, was called "Moolie".  I guess it was because he bought and sold cattle at one time.   They also talked about "Honeyman" someone, I don't remember the last name.  He cleaned outhouses.   Barbara Ulrich Barbara.Ulrich@sbcglobal.net  ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: Carol MacLean <ritam@axion.net> To: NS-CAPE-BRETON@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, April 3, 2009 7:52:26 PM Subject: [NS-CB] Cape Breton Nicknames - some history Cape Breton Post Wednesday, January 16, 2008 CAPE BRETON NICKNAMES Charles de Gaulle looked down his ample patrician nose at his fellow countrymen and pronounced the French Republic ungovernable. In what must have been a moment of utter pique and sheer frustration, he exclaimed: "How can one govern a country that has 350 kinds of cheese?" What might he have said had he been a local politician in industrial Cape Breton?  Someone once described Eastern Nova Scotia as: "rainy days, Holy Days and MacDonalds." At one time, DOSCO, the coal and steel company, had 650 MacDonalds on the payroll and 150 of them were named John. One day, a car left Glace Bay headed for Sydney with five John MacDonalds in it - Jack "Spud", Johnny "Angus Summer John", Johnny "Flat", Johnny "Billy Big Archie" and Johnny "Billy Allan Cape North". Behind them, in a second car, were two more John MacDonalds - Jack "The Snake" and "Antigonish Jack." Nicknames were the only means of singling out the many MacDonald families. The late Tony Mackenzie lived in Egerton, near Merigomish in Pictou County. He was a retired history teacher who collected and published Scots' folklore. He attended St Francis Xavier University "off and on" and left to work on hydro lines and in construction when funds ran out. He earned an Arts degree in 1947 and 12 years later an Education degree. He joked that he attended university for three terms - "Roosevelt,Truman and Eisenhower". Tony has two modest best-sellers on Maritime bookstore shelves and a third in the oven. His history, THE HARVEST TRAIN, is about Maritimers who rode the trains to western Canada for the grain harvest. His second book is titled THE IRISH IN CAPE BRETON. His third chronicles visits of Gypsies to Atlantic Canada. He collected nicknames. His favourite was the "Pickle Arse" Petries. The story goes that a Petrie was sitting on a barrel of pickled herring, fell into a political argument and then into the barrel of brine when the woodencover caved in. He was wedged there firmly for some time and when hewas finally extricated his posterior was pickled. The "Pickle Arse" Petries are not to be confused with the "Proud Arse" Macleans who were the very first family in Iona to build an outdoor privy. Most nicknames reflect an ancestor, a physical characteristic, place of birth, a deformity or a misfortune. Johnny "The Nun" worked at a convent. Billy "Concrete" had a son nicknamed Carl "Reddi-Mix". "Jim the Bear" had a son named "Colin the Cub". "Waterloo Dan" was a miner who had been branded in his youth. When he stripped in the colliery washhouse, there, printed backwards across his cheeks was "Waterloo No. 2", a campaign ribbon he won when he backed into a red-hot stove. History does not record how "Rotten Archie" came by his nickname. It could be from the Gaelic word "rotan" that means red-faced. "Hughiethe Crock" could have been a boozer or his nickname could befrom "cnoc", the Gaelic word for hill pronounced "crok". One can only wonder how "Big Angus the Clap" got his name. To givehim the benefit of the doubt, the Gaelic word "clab" means garrulous. Then there are the "Split the Winds". Their nickname was earned whenthe matriarch, without intending to, uncorked a blast of stomach gases that shook the stained glass windows and loosened the Stations of the Cross from the walls of St. Anne's Church in Glace Bay. Tony MacKenzie's eyes gleamed when he related the story of "Five Mile Annie" who was married to "Two Storey Dan". She got her nickname because she drove her old car so slowly and he got his because he was so tall he didn't need a ladder to paint the side of a house. One day, "Two Storey Dan" had to resort to using a ladder and fell off. When Annie heard the news her only question was: "Did he spill any paint?" There are no footnotes anywhere to tell how the "Blue" Macdonalds earned their nickname - unless it was for their Tory upbringing. Angus "Blue" was a much-loved local politician in Glace Bay. He parlayed his job as a miner and his volunteer work with the Canadian Legion and Little League Baseball into a lifetime position on Town Council. Like so many of his peers, Angus "Blue" left school at an early age to help support his family. His formal education probably ended with Grade Six. Angus "Blue" was known for his propensity to mangle the English language. He could, on occasion, make Mrs. Malaprop soundlike an Oxford don. Addressing voters, he referred to them as "my dear constitionaries". If elected, he promised he would "do something about the 'LIGHTNING' system on South Street". During a Town Council meeting he advised those present he had difficulty pronouncing Clerk Enso Antonello's name and thereafter would refer to him as "the Dago". No offence was taken by Enso or by "Blue's" fellow Councillors. Angus "Blue" clashed once with Prime Minister Mike Pearson who was at a Legion Atlantic Command convention soft-selling his government's approach to bilingualism and biculturalism. "Listen, Bye", he told the PM, "if English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for us guys down here." Then, for good measure, he threw in a few profane broadsides. Ever the diplomat, ever conciliatory, Mike Pearson replied: "We aren't trying to legislate language for anyone. It doesn't matter awhit what language Canadians speak - English, French or the language of the previous speaker. "Angus "Blue" was smart enough to quit when he was behind. The morning paper the next day carried a photo of Angus "Blue" wearing his blue Blazer and beret, both carrying Legion crests - with his arm around Mike Pearson's shoulder. The Hot Stove League that gathered on fine evenings on Senator's Corner in Glace Bay under the chairmanship of "Big Cy" MacDonald was always good for the latest Angus "Blue" miscue - like the night he went to Vince MacGillivray's Funeral Parlour wearing his brand new "double-chested suit and Stilson hat" from Hughie MacIntyre's haberdashery. Angus "Blue" didn't live to experience "NIAGARA", the new wonderdrug for erectile difficulty. Nor did he ever indulge himself in one of those new fangled JU-JITSU bathtubs with water jets. "Big Cy" and Angus "Blue" were in common agreement on one thing. "Everybody thinks we are backward down here in Cape Breton. Did you know that last year 10,000 Upper Canadian and American tourists drove down here to see the "SEVEN MILE BRIDGE?" The Seven Mile Bridge is about 75 feet across - including approaches - and spans a narrow stream at Howie Centre. It is seven miles from Sydney. "Now, who's backward?" 3. http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/04/easter-bunnys-family-tree-fou nd.html Olive Tree Genealogy Blog April 10, 2009 Easter Bunny's Family Tree Found! Breaking news - yesterday a little girl named Alice was playing in the garden of an old house in England when she fell down a large rabbit hole. Before climbing out she made a unique discovery. In a small wooden box under a pile of rabbit fur hats Alice spotted a yellowed letter. The letter was addressed to "Dear Easter" and signed "Uncle Wiggily", and it provided details of an interesting family tree! (You can view the letter mentioned above from the url) The complete letter has been transcribed below: Dear Easter, I'm glad you asked about your family. Time is getting short for me and I think I'm the only one left who knows the stories of our family. Your great-grandfather, Bugs, was one of three brothers (Bugs, Peter and Brer). The brothers left their home and sailed for America in the late 1800s. The ship they were on was caught up in a terrible storm and the brothers had to tie themselves to the mast. The ship sank but Bugs, Peter and Brer were lucky enough to find a plank and they climbed up on it and drifted for several days until they were rescued by the SS Lollipop. When they got to Ellis Island, the customs officials changed the brothers' last names before allowing them to leave the ship, and so the three branches of our family began. Bugs, Your great-grandpa, kept his Bunny name. Peter's was changed to Cottontail and all his descendants have kept that name. Brer's name was changed to Rabbit and it is from his line that our famous cousins White and Velveteen descend. Great grandpa Bugs later met and married your great-grandmother Bunny Fufu. I don't know anything about her parents. My cousin Willy Bunny has photos and her family bible but he is stingy with the family information and refuses to share. Apparently Bunny Fufu's family bible was tossed into a fire by Indians when they attacked the settlement where she and her parents lived, but Bunny's father leapt into the flames and saved the bible. I wish Willy would not be so secretive with the information! It gets a bit confusing, but Velveteen Rabbit, your mother, was your father Energizer's second wife and his third cousin once removed. It wasn't unusual for cousins to marry each other, but it does get confusing as we all seem to have large families. Velveteen's father (your maternal grandfather) was Peter but I don't know too much about your mom's side of the family. I did hear there was an Angora in there somewhere way back. Some say she was a Princess and Peter rescued her from pirates! Of course you know your grandparents - Buster and Trix. One day you should ask your grandma Trix why she calls your grandpa Buster by his nickname "Hassenfeffer" whenever she is mad at him, it's a cute story. I've done some research on our family but am stuck on your great-great-grandmother. That would be your Great-Grandpa Bugs' mother. Great-Grandpa Bugs' father (your great-great-grandpa) was named Cadbury but I think your great-great-grandma was left by aliens. She is my brick wall. I know Cadbury called her Flopsy and they had 54 children but even though I've searched everywhere, I can't find what her SIRname was. I guess I should tell you about the family scandal involving your Great great grandpa Cadbury Bunny. My Aunt Babbity told me she heard the grownups whispering about this when she was little. It seems that Cadbury's father fell in love with a chicken and Cadbury was the result of that love match! This might explain Cadbury's strange behaviour.... Well Easter, I think I've given you enough details to confuse you, but I hope I've gotten you interested in learning more! I know where some of the graves are of your ancestors and will take you there one day if you want to go. It's just a hop, skip and jump away. Give my best to all the little children when you make your rounds this year, As ever, Uncle Wiggily Posted by Genealogy Blogger at 4:23 AM

Born in Sydney Mines, April 27, 1939, Ron was the son of the late Cecil and Gladys (Hancock) Ross, formerly of Florence. He joined the navy at the age of 17 and after several years the call of Cape Breton brought him back to work in telecommunications with the RCMP Sydney detachment until his retirement in 1992. An avid golfer, Ron developed a love of the sport early on and upon his retirement he proceeded to work on his golf skills full-time, often over-time. A legend at Seaview, know affectionately as ?The Rock?, Ron honed his skills to become Senior Golf Champion several times and confirmed his legend status with three holes in one at Seaview. He also developed many solid friendships along the way and we would like to extend a very special thank you to Joe King, Joey Andrea, Norm Williams, Brian Cullen and Glen Joseph and the rest of his golf buddies for their tireless visits and friendship during his illness. Donald James Wilkie, North Sydney at North Sydney , Nova Scotia , Canada - Peacefully and with the same dignity he lived his life, Donald James Wilkie died early on the morning of April 5, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by family who thought the world of him. Devoted husband, loving father, and doting grandfather, Donnie was born in North Sydney, where he lived almost his entire life. He was the son of the late William and Irene (Fougere) Wilkie. He is survived by Joanne (Cotter), his wife and best friend of 50 years. Also surviving are his daughter, Karen (James Kulchyski) of Sioux Lookout, Ont.; his sons, Scott, Vancouver, and Don, Montréal; grandchildren, Kristyn and Ryan; sisters, Joyce Lachapelle, Freda MacLeod and Brenda (Mel) Birmingham; brothers, Edgar, Albert (Phyllis), Georgie (Lexie) and Gordie (Muriel); sister-in-law, Mary (Kehoe) Wilkie; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine Mulley, brother, Arthur, and brothers-in-law, Gilbert Lachapelle and Hugh MacLeod. Donnie had a long career as a commercial sales representative and was a life-long member of the Northwest Commercial Travellers Association. A member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, he was also very active in community volunteer programs, most of which were run by the local Kiwanis Club, where he was a member for over 15 years. When not immersed in church and community work, his greatest passion was horses, many of which he owned and trained through the years with his like-minded brothers, and he was a member of both the Cape Breton and Northside Horseman associations. Another love was music, which always raised his spirits and which he indulged as often as possible at concerts big and small, and with his ever-growing music collection. He was also immensely proud of the great island of Cape Breton, and collected friendships, stories, and local history from virtually every crag and corner of it. Because his kindness, warmth, and good humour were always and immediately on display, many will miss and fondly remember him. 3. Thank you to all who replied to my question. I have an old photo of my mother taken in the 1930's and on the back was written, what I now realize, is Muggah not Mugger's Creek. Thanks also for the history behind it- interesting. Regards Mary

    3. Hi Chris, It's possible that your Francis is the unnamed son in the following Turner family, who are connected to my Morley family. If he moved to Halifax by 1860 that would explain why he wasn't in the 1871 and later censuses for Cape Breton. I had speculated, as you can see in my footnote, that he might have died before 1871 but I never found a death record that I could identify as being this person. Perhaps some of the names of his siblings might be familiar. There actually weren't too many Turners in Sydney at this early time period, so the chances are pretty good that this is your family. I have more information on other members of this family if you're interested. Regards, Janice Fralic-Brown Descendants of Isaac Kendrick Turner Generation No. 1 1. His name was Francis Turner and he married Catherine Hardiman in Halifax August 1860. He gives his residence as Sydney C.B but there is little else known about him. I could give a guess as to his birth year as between 1830-1840, but it would only be a guess. If he sounds familiar to anyone please let me know. Thanks!
