I lived next to that sanitorium for four years 1965-69 at the Coast Guard College. The sanitorium was originally part of the Pt. Edward Naval Base, as was the Coast Guard College. I believe it closed in the early 70's, as parts of it were taken over by the Coast Guard College at that time. Phil

    3. Hi, I am hoping someone may be doing research at St Margaret's in East Bay/Grand Mira if they could check out 2 things for me. First is the death of Hugh Mc/acDonald who was born about 1830 and must have died between 1877-1880 when there was no gov't record for deaths for I can't find his death on the Nova Scotia site. His parents name or birth and death years, where he could have been born. Second the Marriage of Effie Mac/cDonald to Ronald McDonald about 1833 French Road (first known child came Feb 1884) , both were buried in St Margaret's so I am presuming they were married there too. On the church marriage record I am looking for groom and brides mother's names. What I have so far and can't prove is Ronald's parents could be Angus MacDonald and Christie MacDonald. Effie's parents are Hugh MacDonald and Catherine MacLeod. I have birth and death dates for both of them. 3. Prior to and post 1900 the vast majority of tb sanitoriums appear to be located in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. A scattering of them were in NB and one in the West Coast of NF. In the 1915s we had two in NS one at Shelburne and one at Point Gray. What was located at Mabou was an insane asylum. I remember as a small boy my grandfather, Johnny Tom Burton, on being asked how Kitty (my grandmother) was feeling would answer, "ah not too bad but if she doesnt smarten up it will be Mabou for her bye." You see she was getting a bit feeble and senile and in those early days men had the power to send a wife to the asylum should they wish to do so. It was many years later before I understood what he meant. He of course grew up and lived in Inverness County where they were served by Mabou. It is funny now but a sad testimony of the times. Can you in your wildest dreams think about committing 'the wife' now because you think she is getting a bit flaky? 3. Sheila, I could be wrong about this but I don't think there really was a sanatorium as such in 1858 in C.B. All of the deaths due to Consumption (Tuberculosis) that I have come across, appear to have taken place at home. Consumption was very common and sometimes whole families were eventually wiped out from this dreadful illness. 3. Dear List, In Sydney Mines, around 1858, if someone had a lung condition - would anyone know if there was a sanitarium they could have been sent to? We are looking for a death record for Timothy Hennessey, wife Ellen Walsh b. 1819 Bras d'Or. They had land in Little Bras d'Or bought from Ellen Walsh's parents: John and Ellen/Helen Walsh. Stories handed down indicate that Timothy was younger than Ellen - b. around 1824 in Ireland - and that she raised the children alone after his death around 1858. Thank you, Sheila

    1. [NS-CB] McDonald - Brewer Ingonish
    2. A. Brophy
    3. I’m looking for the origins of Neil McDonald, Clyburn Brook area, (behind Number 9 hole, Highland Links), Ingonish. He married Eliza Brewer, Ingonish, on 12 Sep 1855, daughter of George Brewer and Jane Robinson, both from England originally. Neil and Eliza are our Great-great-grandparents. They are listed in the Census of 1861, 1871, and 1881, both Eliza and Neil as having been born in Nova Scotia. In 1881 the children in their household are: Jane 27, George 18, Annie 16, Elizabeth 14, Emiline 10, Michael 7, James John 1, and Robert 0 yrs. "The McDonald farm" is remembered by Maurice and Emma Donovan in an interview in the Cape Breton Magazine, reprinted in "The Cabot Trail in Black and White", by Ronald Caplan. Neil's eldest son, our Great-Grandfather Angus McDonald, by 1881 had already left home, and is listed in the same Census as living with my G. Grandmother Margaret Fraser (daughter of John Fraser and Flora Tulloch MacDonald), in Bay St. Lawrence ((Family 51-54) with their new born son, John Simon McDonald, our grandfather. Angus, Neil’s son, went on to survive three wives and married a fourth: 1. Margaret Fraser, 2. Eliza Williams, 3. the widow Margaret (Hawley) O’Connell, and 4. Hattie Williams. Between the four wives Angus had 12 children, so there should be many, many descendants in the Ingonish area for whom, like me, Neil McDonald is a Great-Great-Grandfather, especially in the McDonald, Hawley and Williams families. So perhaps they can help. I would like to know what family Neil McDonald came from, and from what community. Thanks! Aileen
