I’m looking for the origins of Neil McDonald, Clyburn Brook area, (behind Number 9 hole, Highland Links), Ingonish. He married Eliza Brewer, Ingonish, on 12 Sep 1855, (daughter of George Brewer and Jane Robinson, both from England originally). They are listed in the Census of 1861, 1871, and 1881, listing both Eliza and Neil as having been born in Nova Scotia. In 1881 the children in their household are: Jane 27, George 18, Annie 16, Elizabeth 14, Emiline 10, Michael 7, James John 1, and Robert 0 yrs. "The McDonald farm" in the Clyburn Valley is remembered by Maurice and Emma Donovan in an interview in the Cape Breton Magazine, reprinted in "The Cabot Trail in Black and White", by Ronald Caplan. By 1881 Neil's eldest son, our Great-Grandfather Angus McDonald, had already left home, and is listed in the same Census as living with my G. Grandmother Margaret Fraser (daughter of John Fraser and Flora Tulloch MacDonald), in Bay St. Lawrence (Family 51-54) with their new born son, John Simon McDonald, our grandfather. Angus, Neil’s son, went on to survive three wives and married a fourth: 1. Margaret Fraser, 2. Eliza Williams, 3. the widow Margaret (Hawley) O’Connell, and 4. Hattie Williams. Between the four wives Angus had 12 children, so there should be many, many descendants in the Ingonish area for whom, like me, Neil McDonald is a Great-Great-Grandfather, especially in the McDonald, Hawley and Williams families. So perhaps they can help. I would like to know what family Neil McDonald came from, and from what community. Thanks! Aileen
Thank you, Bill, Bernardine, Florence, and Sandra By the looks of it, it appears like Elizabeth Peckham has claimed the father was one Wm Kavanagh. The nun probably used her best judgement, as it was noted a record of birth could not be found. Than again, not finding one is not unusual either. Was the child illegitimate? After all he was in an orphanage, so it might lead one to think he was. Maybe yes, maybe no ... But children have been given up for other reasons besides illegitimacy, poverty, illness, death of a spouse, physical or mental inability to care for an infant, etc. Maybe, Wm and Elizabeth had what is known as a "Putative Marriage." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putative_marriage#Catholic_canon_law I didn't know there was such a thing. Learn something new every day. Wm Kavanagh, died Apr 9, 1949, and the informant was Elizabeth Peckham, and she claimed she was his wife. Thank you again Juanita

Juanita, I can't make out the exact spelling either but I think it might be a form of the Latin word "Petitio" meaning: Petition; demand; claim. In this case I am assuming the child was illegitimate (since the Little Flower Institute was an orphanage) and the mother "claimed" the father was Wm. Kavanagh. The person who filled out the death form didn't have any proof of the mother's claim and a notation at the top of the page states a birth record could not be found for the child either. Just a guess really. The word is "putative" meaning "reputed to be" or "supposedly". Neil and Eliza are our Great-great-grandparents. Thanks! Aileen
Hi Listed in the death records was John Bernard Kavanagh who died in 1943 at the Little Flower Institute. Parents were listed as Wm Kavanagh & Elizabeth Peckham. After Wm Kavanagh's name in brackets was a word I think might be latin (p__tatina). Its the 2nd and 3rd letter, I can't seem to make out or is it just one letter? Any help with what the word is and its meaning would be appreciated. Hi Allene and all, I'd be very interested to learn what information is contained in " Homesteaders and Early Settlers of the Cedar Creek Ridge Area, Latah County, Idaho" about DUNCAN MCFEE and his family. To try and discover if he was a Cape Bretoner, I did some searching and discovered that there is a lot of "mis-information out there" [if one dares call it that, instead of what it actually is: Pure Nonsense!] concerning DUNCAN MCPHEE's ancestral history. He supposedly was the son of JOHN MCPHEE, b. 10 Oct 1816, Colindale Port Hood, d. 26 May 1912, Boston and CHRISTY MACPHEE, d. 22 Aug 1878, Springville, NS [I am not going to continue with her line.] But will add this, Duncan also was born of another mother by the name of CATHERINE MACLELLAN. You see JOHN MCPHEE was something like "Old mother Hubbard, who had too many children, she didn't know what to do." Well, John must have been her soul mate. As he had "so many wives he didn't know what to do." Least One World Tree, has him with a lot of wives. BUT now it gets interesting. I would say, "I've now seen everything in genealogy. But that would not be true, I am sure there are probably a few surprises left for me to discover." ;p) JOHN MCPHEE's father supposedly was a man by the name of ANGUS MCPHEE, who just happened to be born "58" years AFTER his son JOHN (b. 1816) in "1874" and "21 years" AFTER his grandson DUNCAN (b. 1853). And as luck would have it, dear Angus got to outlive both his son and grandson, both of whom just happened to be born BEFORE he was, and died peaceful in 1966. Completely unaware that some so called genealogical researchers, would turn him into some sort of "magican" who could even out perform Houdini. Especially if he could have preformed the feat, Ancestry and others have him performing. We must not forget ANGUS's father ARCHIBALD MCPHEE, b. 1778, and died in 1873 a year before ANGUS was born. Nothing strange about dying before your son was born. Its been known to happen, BUT would you believe it! We got another magican, his wife MARY CAMERON, poor dear died in 1845, a full "29 years" before her son was born! I would love to know how she accomplished that! Or the fact that ANGUS was his "own grandpa!" Belief it or not the list goes on, but I'll not dwell any further on what nonsense is out there on Duncan's ancestral family. Suffice to say, "Please be careful what you enter in your data base and most definitely be careful of the information you download from/or upload to the internet. You just might end up with a family tree, that will frighten the wits out of your grandchildren, thinking they have sprung from some unspeakable source." I'd bet my bootees, DUNCAN MCPHEE's sprang from a normal background, just like the rest of us. Born of parents who were born before him, and grandparents who were born before their children, etc, etc, on back in time. Are his roots originally in Cape Breton? Most likely but that I can't say positively. What can I tell you? Lets come forward. Duncan appears to be a man who married, and fathered 5 children (all of whom, I may add were born in the proper sequence, and definitely not before him or his parents). Duncan McPhee, b. LOL, Juanita. Thanks for sharing. I have tended to leave One World Tree and its ilk alone ever since I found my g-g-g-grandfather Allan "Gardiner" MacDonald in there as being older than his own parents. I've had one offlist request for the information already. If you also want a copy, please send me your address via private mail. I don't want to post any more direct quotations from the book on a public forum because of copyright restrictions. Also, I won't have access again to this noncirculating book until June 3rd. I have a subscription to Ancestry.com and found him in the Idaho Death Index, 1911-51. His second name is given as "Alexander." His surname is spelled McPhee in the local history book, but I've seen it as McFee in censuses. May 21st, 2009 Greetings to the list, I will be away starting tonight, til June 8th. I have another person, Maureen McNeil, who will be doing the obits for me while I'm blazing across the night sky to the other side of the country. If you see a shooting star, that's my Tango AirBus just cutting a swath to Down North.... If the obits are not there right away, don't worry, she'll get to them.... If at some point I have a chance to do the obits myself, I'll send them. I just don't know what my internet connections will be like while traveling. I'll first be in Ottawa for the induction ceremonies of my father into the Hall of Valour on Saturday, May 23rd. But on May 22, I'm attending a mmet & greet with some of the list-members who live in the Ottawa area. If anyone out there want's to attend, let me know before I leave tonight, just after supper, Vancouver time. When I'm finished in Ottawa, it's onto Halifax for my aunt's 92nd birthday with my mother. We will be parked there for two weeks. I'm hoping to get up to Cape Breton the last weekend of May, and if I do, another meet & greet will be in fast order... There is also a mmet & greet on June 6th in Halifax for Piper MacNeil members, and three others have been invited. Hi all! Today, I was doing my weekly volunteer hours at Latah County Historical Society in Moscow, Idaho. As a retired librarian I felt compelled to offer my services when they started cataloging their collection into a database. ;) Anyway, one of the local histories I handled today had a McPhee family listed in the index, so I decided to take a look just in case they came from Nova Scotia. They did, or rather he did! The following information comes from "Homesteaders and Early Settlers of the Cedar Creek Ridge Area, Latah County, Idaho" and was written by Anna Smith Mitchell and published in 1978. This area of Idaho is along the Idaho/Washington State line and is northeast of Moscow. The book contains considerable information and photos on Duncan McPhee and his descendants. Here is a brief excerpt from the book: Duncan McPhee was born in Nova Scotia, November 15, 1853, and passed [away] August 31, 1927. He came to the United States in 1875 and settled at Harrisburg, Oregon. November 17, 1877, he was married to Miss Matilda Alfred, who was born at Harrisburg, Oregon, June 1, 1863, where her family had settled after crossing the continent in a covered wagon. Mr. McPhee came to Cedar Creek in 1898 and worked in the timber, making ties. . . . He took up the homestead in 1903. Mr. McPhee was a real "old time fiddler" and made music for folks to enjoy for miles around. There is much more, and if any of you recognize this man as part of your family and would like to have the information I have access to, just let me know. I'll be out of town next Wednesday, so I won't get back to the society until two weeks from today, but I'll be happy to copy the material and send it to you. Thanks. Allene
A bit off topic with regards to actual people we might know who were patients but, there was a Sanatorium in Kentville and I was one of the last class of CNAs they trained there in 1972 / 1973. As a kid my friend and I used to ride our bikes along the nice paved paths around the "San" in the summer. Interesting place and interesting memories. While training there it was more of a lung hospital for those with cancer or emphysema. my grad ring and pin still have the words Nova Scotia Sanatorium and the lung association cross on it. Hi Sheila; There were no sanitariums in Canada for those who were striken with TB. The first sanitarium was opened in 1897. Here is an interesting site to read about the time line for TB in Canada http://www.lung.ca/tb/tbhistory/timeline/index.html You are unlikely to find any record of Timothy Hennessey's death, unless the family recorded it in a family bible. Or possibly a stone if erected in a cemetery. I don't know if this will help you or not ... but on Jan 20th, 1855, in the Cape Breton News: a "TIMOTHY HENACY" (possibly another spelling of the man's name?) was listed on a subscribers list to the 'Patriotic Fund, Workmen & Others in the Employ of the Mining Associaton, with a few others persons in the vicinity of Sydney Mines. Please note that I do not research this family, so am unable to provide any other information. Good luck with your research. We are looking for a death record for Timothy Hennessey, wife Ellen Walsh b. 1819 Bras d'Or. They had land in Little Bras d'Or bought from Ellen Walsh's parents: John and Ellen/Helen Walsh. Stories handed down indicate that Timothy was younger than Ellen - b. around 1824 in Ireland - and that she raised the children alone after his death around 1858. Thank you, Sheila

Daniel Perfect, New Waterford Born in 28/02/1949 at New Waterford , Nova Scotia , Canada - On this day we are sad to announce the passing of Daniel Perfect. He died peacefully May 18, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility while surrounded by close friends and family. Born in New Waterford, Feb. 28, 1949, Danny was the son of his now deceased parents, Joey and Hester Perfect. At the age of 17 he began working in the Cape Breton Coal mines and continued to work for Devco until he retired 32 years later. In 1972 he married Theresa Marie McDonald at Saint Agnes parish. He remarried her again 25 years later at that same church in 1997. His deep love for her was obvious, genuine and will be known long beyond his passing. His goal in life was to ensure those around him were happier than they were before meeting with him. Whether it be through trickery, pranks, jokes, song, or just plain honesty, Danny brightened the faces and hearts of both young and old. He enjoyed playing Tarabish, the occasional cold beer, and listening to music. At wedding receptions he would jive from beginning to end. Danny had more close friends and family members than is commonly heard of. His huge heart, warm smile and wacky sense of comedy will surely be missed by all who had the privelege of spending time with him. Danny is survived by his wife, Theresa; and his sons, Danny and Ronnie, Ronnie's spouse Joanna Gouthro and granddaughter Somer Perfect. Also surviving are sisters, Elizebeth Cameron, Rose Poirier; brothers, Timmy, Gerard and John Joe Perfect. He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Mclellan. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow with a luncheon to be held at St. Agnes Hall immediately following the funeral mass. Burial will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
