Evasuk on May 28, 2009 at St. Joseph?s Lifecare Centre, Brantford, Ont. Stasia was born and grew up a ?coal miner?s daughter? in Glace Bay, the eldest child of the late John and Annie (Makahon) Evasuk. She will always be remembered by her family, friends and journalistic colleagues for her always-positive love of life and her unique presence that could captivate and intrigue people from all walks of life. Upon graduation from high school, Stasia worked for the Glace Bay Gazette in the 1940s as a cub reporter covering local town and coal miner?s union matters. She then moved on to Toronto, where she found her real calling in life - writing about people and fashion. Stasia landed a job with the Toronto Telegram as a fashion reporter. After five years at the old Tely she moved to the west coast of Canada and worked as a journalist and reporter for the Vancouver Sun for several years. Returning to Toronto in the early 1960s she re-joined the Toronto Telegram as a fashion writer. Just prior to the Toronto Telegram?s closing, Stasia left the Telegram to join the Toronto Star as a writer in the fashion section where she remained until the mid eighties. With time Stasia moved gracefully from her globetrotting, fashion writing career to the Star?s seniors? column ?The Age of Reason?. Finally, in May 1991 she put down her typewriter for good after almost 50 years in fashion writing and journalism to officially retire from the Toronto Star. Stasia is survived by her sister, Helen (Zsolt) Molnar, Brantford, Ont. and brother, Bill (Francie) Evasuk of Glace Bay. Stasia was predeceased by her younger brother, George (Carmie) Evasuk of Glace Bay. Stasia has a number of nieces and nephews who she touched and who will miss her treasured personality and glamorous life-style. Stasia had many suitors over the years but never married or had children. A Celebration of Stasia?s Life will be held this coming August at St. Anne?s church in Glace Bay when all her family is ?down home?, back on the Mira. No flowers or donations for Stasia. Just love life, family and always treat people well - as did Stasia. ************************************************************************** Peggy Farrell at Christmas Island , Nova Scotia , Canada The family announces the peaceful passing of Peggy Farrell, on Friday May 29, 2009 at the QE11, Halifax. 1. [NS-CB] Meet & Greet @ the Bean Bank
    2. Greetings to the listers, Anyone up to a MEET & GREET at the Bean Bank on Charlotte Street in Sydney, this Saturday (May 30th) around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. If Sunday afternoon is better, then that might suit you better. Better still, there could be a second meet & greet if needed. Another place for a meet could be at the cafeteria just down the hall from the Beaton Institute. Lots of room there, but I don't know if it's open on the weekend. I realize this is short notice, but my plans are changing daily while in Halifax. I will be leaving for CB on tomorrow morning, and returning to Halifax on Monday morning. Will be visiting relatives along the route to Reserve Street where I'm staying for the weekend. There is a family gathering on Saturday night, I still don't know where it's taking place.

From an early age, and throughout his life, he travelled back to Chapel Island every summer to live with his relatives, Isabel and James Bernard and later to attend the annual St. Ann mission as a part of his commitment to the Mi?kmaq traditions. He was the first Mi?kmaq to graduate from Houlton High School and Ricker College where he received a BA in Business Administration in 1970 from which he developed a lifelong quest to further knowledge in a way that would be beneficial to Indigenous Peoples and other minority groups through education, outreach and advocacy. He served two years in the United States Army and was a Vietnam veteran, a member of the America Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. 1. [NS-CB] Drummer on Foot Companion
    2. Don MacFarlane
    3. Drummer on Foot Companion As many of you know, I was a co-editor, along with Ray MacLean, on the "Drummer on Foot" collection of articles on Antigonish pioneer families which many have found useful in their genealogical quests. Soon after the second printing came out I began to extract the various family structures that are found in DOF, mainly to clarify in my own mind who was whose son or daughter or wife. Over time I completed an extract for each article. I think I did a pretty good job of interpreting DOF's not always clear structure, but invite corrections. At that time I considered publishing the extracts as a 'Companion' to DOF. Then I thought it would be more useful to add notes that would link each individual to other places in DOF where they appear, thus facilitating the 'DOF Companion' as a research tool. Trying to do this on a word processor, with the document to be printed out as hard copy soon proved to be a near-impossible task, so I set it aside. Earlier this year I decided to attempt it again, but this time as an on-line document. It appears to be working out very well. If you go to my website (see link below) you will see the first iteration of the 'DOF Companion'. I say the first iteration because I'm hoping that you will help in its development. The first links I've included are for my own MacFarlanes. I'm sure there are just as many links for most of the other families in DOF, after all, it seems that we are all at least second or third cousins:-). If you would like to participate simply e-mail me the names of the individuals and the DATES of the articles in which they appear, pages numbers will not help since I am working from a different document. I will try to update the 'DOF Companion' as frequently as possible. In any case, please let me know if you find the "DOF Companion' useful. Respectfully, Don MacFarlane For genealogy of MacFarlane and related families go to: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maritime/Maritime_Mosaic/

    3. I remember the odd person when I was a youngster being placed on what was called the Indian List. You apparently got on this list by being an Indian or a Half Breed or for a white man for unruly conduct. The poor Indian and/or Half Breed was probably on this list from birth. Your name appeared and it was posted publicly and come hell or high water you couldnt get a drink - tavern or government store. Most unfortunately a wife could appear in front of a magistrate and for a number of reasons have her husband placed on this list. Can you imagine the embarrassment this would cause publicly not to mention the scene at home. Does anyone have any information concerning this Interdiction Act, the period it was in force and when it ceased to exist. George Fraser

    1. Re: [NS-CB] Drummer on Foot Companion

    2. B.A.Campbell
    3. Hi Sharon, I have a little information on this family, they are not part of my research but I did a little for my friend who was interested in her mother's family. NEIL J. s/o Stephen (Big) MacDonald, was a coal miner in his younger days. He settled at Glace Bay (Caledonia) and married Effie, the daughter of Angus Campbell. Their children were: Stephen, Kenny, Angus, Donald, Joseph, Anthony, Hector, Neil Francis, Mary Elizabeth (Mary Liz), Catheline and "Josephine." "Josephine" married John Kenny MacDonald (both deceased; burial in St. Ann's Cemetery, Glace Bay) they had three daughters (all born in Glace Bay). (Sorry, from here down is private information.) Josephine's husband, John Kenny, was the son of Kenneth (aka Kenneth Story) & Mary (MacPherson) MacDonald who settled at Glace Bay. (see page 203 in the book "To The Hill of Boisdale", second edition) "Kenneth Story" was the son of Angus & Mary (MacDonald) MacDonald of Leitche's Creek, Cape Breton. "Angus" was the son of John & (Miss Lynk) MacDonald (likely of North Uist) (Angus was known as "Two Story Angus") "John" was the son of Alexander & Sarah (MacDonald) MacDonald of North Uist. Hope this helps and as I said above.. I do not research this family.
