Hi everyone: I had a real senior's moment. I sent an email to my son I thought. Instead to this link. His email starts with ns. I do have a question. My great great grandfather George Old built several ships in Bras D'Or. He sold one or more to the Archibald's of North Sydney. Is there any information or history of the Archibald's of North Sydney? The one ship in particular was the In Constant in 1848. Part of the hull is under a glass floor on display in an arcade (mall) in Wellington, New Zealand. Cheers, Wilf Morley wilfmorley@eastlink.ca

Hello, If you have access to "Cape Breton Ships and Men" by John P. Parker, MBE, you will find a number of references to George Olds. There is also quite a lot on the Archibalds. The Inconstant 601 tons , owned by T. D. Archibald and the master was Robert Coles. The ship was transferred to new owners in England after completion ; according to Parker. As deeply as we mourn her loss, we more joyfully remember and celebrate the wonderful life she lived for almost 91 years. Erna Sarah Lydia MacAulay Dillon was born on June 17, 1918 in Grand Lake, Cape Breton to Malcolm and Alma (Cann) MacAulay. Grand Lake?s one room school, Sydney Academy (1935) and Normal College (Teaching, 1937) provided Erna?s formal education. She became the new school teacher in Round Island, boarding with the Dillon family and there met the Dillons? eldest son, Wilfred. Wilfred and Erna were married in 1940 and settled in Sydney to eventually welcome their son, Robert. Although the war temporarily took Erna and Wilfred to Saint John, N.B., Erna?s life was absorbed as wife to Wilfred, mother to five children, grandmother to eight grandchildren and eventually two great-grandchildren. Cromarty Street was home for over 50 years with children, friends, and family coming and going, chocolate chip cookies never let to cool, and tea on the stove. Despite her busy family, Erna enjoyed involvement in St. Andrew?s United Church and its UCW, as well as the Cape Breton Rug Hookers. Her lifelong friends from ?Club? provided much laughter and support as did many close neighbours, in mostly happy times, but inevitably, some sad. Even these she survived to show the strength of character we all associate with her. Erna was a reader, lover of poetry and music, a francophone, dancer, but most of all a mother and teacher. During the past few years, Erna?s health deteriorated as a result of Alzheimer?s, but she had a wonderful home with Carter?s Senior Care in Dartmouth. Special appreciation is expressed to Robin Carter and Mary Ann MacKenzie, Brittany, Leanne, and Candice for their patience and attention to her comfort and their true compassion and affection. Erna was predeceased by her parents; son, Robert (1969); husband, Wilfred (1998); and brother, Lloyd (1987). She is survived by her daughters, Maureen Buchanan (Gordon), Dartmouth, Sheila MacAulay (Edward), Truro, Ruth Rose (Doug), Dartmouth, and Lois Dillon (Barry Turner), Bedford; grandchildren, Jyl (Chuck), Karey (Eric), Christy, Andrew, Rebecca, Catherine, Matthew, Laura; great- grandchildren, Justin and Alex; sister -in-law, Pearl MacAulay and many special nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew?s United Church, its UCW, or a charity of choice. Visitation will take place on Thursday June 4, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew?s United Church. Born August 24, 1931 in Sydney, she was the only daughter of the late Sam and Annabelle Rolls. Amelia spent her early years in Whitney Pier and shortly after marriage, she and her husband, Tony moved to Sydney River where she happily created their first home together and welcomed daughter, Sharon. These cherished friends would remain close and provide comfort during her illness. Amelia and Tony would move a second time to their dream retirement home on Blacketts Lake, where they had 16 wonderful years listening to the loons, feeding the geese and waiting to greet the first hummingbird of spring. Mom loved her family and friends. Some of these special friends were of the feline variety, as she always felt a home was more welcoming with a cat. I am currently sorting through some pictures that were my grandmother and great grandmother's from Inlet Baddeck. I am hoping to connect wiith persons who may either be researching these lines or knows a family member who may be related as I am hoping to return pictures and identify others. I should mention first that my family from this area were Homer and Ethel (Fraser) MacIvor. Now the pictures I have appear to be from around 1940 are for: Hutchison: (Dan, Davey, John, and fothers unidentified). This is the only group of people in these pictures that I am related to through my MacIvor's. Munroe (John, Dove, and others not identified) Dunlop (Buddie, Gerladine) MacLean (John Hughie, Wife, and daughter Ella Mae) Thank you very much ! Sherri
Seeing as only a few could make it, the meet has sorta been moved. Now that I'm dressed, I'm heading further into Glace Bay, where I will meet two ladies from the mailing list. No sense going to Sydney, when they live closer to where I'm staying on Reserve Street. I realize it was short notice, so maybe next time. But, if anyone is heading to the Vancouver area at anytime, do feel free to send me an email, and I'd gladly meet you over tea. If some of you are able to meet tomorrow sometime, send me an email, as I've got a rented car, so I'd be able to stop in for tea. Are there any takers for the Meet & Greet at the Bean Bank on Charlotte Street today. (May 30th, 2009) Around 2ish would be great. It's no sense me going if no one is able to attend. I will then make other plans for some visits.. Long drive from Halifax to Sydney, what would have taken about four & half hours, turned into an 11 hour trip. Stopped along the way to visit a relative in Antigonish, I've never met, and a friend of my mother's we haven't seen in over 20 years. The relative knew we were coming, but the friend was not on the mind when we started out from Halifax, it was which route to take once on Cape Breton Island. Well, when my mother thought about her friend, I tossed the phone to her and said, phone her. What a surprise to them, we were now making another pit stop in South Haven. From South Haven, we were in the back yard of my cousin's place on Reserve Street in less than an hour. So now you know which route I travelled. Carol
