    3. I couldn't locate the cemetery either but the church is listed including a phone number. I would think the cemetery wouldn't be too far away from the church, Stellarton is not that big of a place. 1. [NS-CB] NEW HOST: MAUREENA JORDAN for CAPE BRETON GENWEB PROJECT
    2. Juanita MacDonald
    3. Hi Maureen and all; Got a pleasant surprise today, when I check out Cape Breton Genweb, we finally have a new host. Which I think is terrific. So let me say welcome Maureena, and though we've never had contact before, as my research and yours haven't crossed paths. Least not yet, anyways. Its very nice to see a new host for capebreton genweb. I see you also have a site of your own which is very lovely indeed: http://maureena.net/index.htm Check it out folks you just might find a connection your looking for. This is the message posted on Cape Breton Genweb: http://www.capebretongenweb.com/ What is Cape Breton Counties Genealogy? As one link in the Nova Scotia GenWeb Project, this site subscribes to the overall objectives of the project, the details of which can be found at the Provincial site. Initially, any site reflects the knowledge and resources of only a few people, but since the inception of this site in 1996, Cape Breton Counties Genealogy has become a real community effort, in the true spirit of Cape Bretoners. The aim is to pull together all available resources and make them accessible from one site. If you know of a link or a resource or have a homepage that should be included on the site, please let us know. If you are able to transcribe original (unpublished) records, provide a list of useful books, or are willing to do lookups from your own resources, we will appreciate and give credit to your participation. Almost all the pages on this site represent the original work of volunteers, other than the site coordinator. Consequently, I am not the best person to ask for further information. I have a limited knowledge of any families other than my own lines. The e-mail address of the author of most pages is usually included on the page. This would be your best resource. Please keep in mind that as site coordinator I do not consider it my task to do lookups or research for anyone, although I will be as helpful as I can in directing you elsewhere. Of course, any bad links, submissions of transcriptions, links to new resources, etc., should be directed to the Cape Breton GenWeb host. Please enjoy the information provided and thanks to all who helped provide it. ................. Regards & Happy hunting Juanita MacDonald

    1. Re: [NS-CB] MacDonald family - when family legend clashes with documented proof

    3. Hi Lauren and all; Lauren wrote: "So the mystery now is the fact that I don't see Murdoch in any family census. I find him in 1880 in Provincetown - but that doesn't tell me much." What it tells you is that MURDOCK MCDONALD age 38, was b. ca 1842 in NS and both of his parents were. It also tell you he was a 'sailor'. It becomes important, as he most likely went to sea at an early age. IF... he is the MURDOCK MCDONALD mariner who sailed on the schooner "Native" (Charles Muggah, master) out of Sydney, NS to Boston, in April of 1865, with the intention of taking up permanent residence in the USA. Than his name would not appear on the census records for NS., as first census records for N.S. with all names in the household appearing was "1871." He was also accompanied by another mariner J. McDonald with the same intentions. IF... he was a "Captain", than he most definitely went to sea at an early age. So in 1870 USA census or 1871 census Canada, unless he was in port, it is not likely that his name would appear on either of those census records. Unless he had been married by that time and his wife included his name on the census record, whether or not he was home. IF... he was not in his home community or visiting someone at the time of a census his name should not appear on the census record, either in the USA or Canada. At the age of approximately 28 ca 1870/71 censuses it is unlikely he was married. His marriage record to Mary H. (nee ?) would need to be found, to see what status he was at the time of his marriage to her. 'Bachelor or Widower?' and who his parents were. His wife's name was MARY H, age 27, b. in NS, and both of her parents were. His children were Jennie, age 4 and Sorena D, age 3 and both these children were b. in Mass. This would most likely narrow a search area for a marriage record to ca 1875. As they were residents of Provincetown at the time of the 1880 census and their children were born there. Their marriage may have taken place in or around Provincetown. The only other place that would be in the running would be Nova Scotia, most likely Cape Breton. Which of course is fairly easy to search with NSHVS being on-line. http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/ that is if they were married here and it was recorded. Lauren wrote:- "I was also given a photo marked, "Aunt Annie Grandpa Mac's sister and a painting on cardboard marked Captain Murdoch MacDonald, Grandpa MacDonal'd brother -(Grandpa MacDonald being my great grandfather, Donald G." The picture identifies "Murdoch" as being the brother to your gr grandfather. Look very carefully at the writing and determine if it was written on the picture just shortly after it was taken. If you only have a copy of it, than ask the person who has the original to check the writing on it. If the writing appears to have been added about the time of the picture, than it was written at a time when someone in the family could identify "Capt Murdock McDonald" positively. As MURDOCK MACDONALD, was a ship's captain, maybe the archives in Boston would have records of ships and seaman records in their holdings. Should be far easier to find a ship's Captain than an ordinary seaman. Or maybe Provincetown has a historical society you can contact. (?) Lauren wrote: - "Oh! and the story of Aunt Laura and others visiting an Uncle Rory at Boularderie... have another new photo which shows family visiting with Uncle Rory (labelled Grandpa MacDonald's brother) and his daughter Mary - they are standing in front of the MacDonald foundation. pretty cool - but... I had thought I had Rory (Roderick) in census married to a Catherine - but no daughter Mary :(" IF this is the family you are referring to on the 1901 Boularderie census: Roderick G. MacDonald & his wife Catherine B. ( nee MacKenzie) with two children John W b. 1883; George D. b. 1891 and Rodk's b-in-l Alexander MacKenzie. They were married: July 25 1881, Boularderie. Than his father and mother were listed as being DUNCAN & AMELIA (her maiden name was not given) MACDONALD. An error maybe on his mother's name? or had she another name? Had Duncan been married more than once? YET ...if you look at this man death certificate and the informant on that certificate was his dau. MARY MACDONALD, who says he was b. 01 July 1855 b. in NS, widowed, carpenter, d. Sept 22, 1932, buried North Sydney, Sept 26, 1932, and that his parents were JOHN MACDONALD, b. Scotland and ANN MACDONALD, b. Scotland. An error on Mary's granfather's name, most likely ? and appears she listed Ann's married name instead of her maiden name? That is done more often than not listing the mother's married name. It is easily done when grandchildren didn't know their grandparents. I'll be nice Lauren and tell you YES there was a daughter MARY and she was b. Oct 1905 acc. to the census record for 1911 North Sydney, where Rory G. and Catherine were living at the time. 1911 North Sydney dis 13, family 210, p.22 McDonald, Rory G, age 55 McDonald, Catherine, age 49 McDonald, John W, age 26 McDonald, George D, age 18 McDonald, Mary, age 5 No doubt MARY was a "little surprise package" that arrived late in the lives of RORY G. & CATHERINE MCDONALD. ;p) No doubt you have the family you want and only need to make a notation, about the errors found concerning names. A little confusion? Maybe? BUT I've seen a whole lot worse! 1. [NS-CB] MacDonald family - when family legend clashes with documented proof
    2. lauren macdonald
    3. hi all! Had a great visit the other day with a cousin of my father's who gave me some older family photos (to keep!!). it brought up many questions - more so than answers.   After my trip in 2007 to Boularderie, I thought I had a pretty good handle on my great grandfather's family. - Now I'm not so sure that I am even close.   I had already known that he, Donald Gamaliel MacDonald was bron around 1851 Bras D'Or, (Boularderie?) - I knew where the "family" homestead is - and saw it myself. I knew that his parents names were Duncan MacDonald and Anne MacLellan, and that there was mention of his daughter Laura and other family members having visited an Uncle Rory on Boularderie. I also had been told that my great grandfather Donald raised his brother's children before leaving to move to the U.S.   Through deed records and census, I thought I had a decent tree of the family with Duncan and Ann having at least 7 - maybe 8 children - Alexander (oldest) Margaret (b. ca 1838),  Duncan (b. ca 1847), May Ellen (b. ca 1851), Donald (b. ca 1851-1854), Roderick (b. ca 1856), Isabella (b. ca 1858) and Johanna (b. ca 1866).   I found them in 1861, 1871, 1881 census and then find some of them later married and the mother Anne living with son Roderick and family. Not that the census records were obvious, I had to figure by location of where they were living according to the known area of the family owned land.   I have a photo of an older woman - maybe over 50 (realizing she may look older than she was) - some in family and on Boularderie had told me she was Donald's mother and that she was a midwife on the island. Now come the new family photos....   One cousin has an original of this image stating it was taken at Nickerson Studio, Provincetown Massachusetts. Family legend also says that this woman lived with my great grandfather at some time when she was older and had a stroke. (no evidence in census - but I can see that given it is only in ten year spans). No death or other records of her in Massachusetts.   I was also given a photo marked, "Aunt Annie Grandpa Mac's sister and a painting on cardboard marked Captain Murdoch MacDonald, Grandpa MacDonal'd brother -(Grandpa MacDonald being my great grandfather, Donald G.   Now things get interesting - family legend had said (as if it speaks alone without people, ha ha) - that "Donald's sister raised Donald Baxter MacMillan the artic explorer". I spent lots of time researching that story - and came up with 1) Donald B MacMillan's father Neil was originally from Boularderie and was born near the home of Murdoch MacDonald. 2) a biography of D.B. MacMillan floating around on the web - says that he lived with the family of captain Murdoch MacDonald for two years before going to live with his sister.   Ok, so now I am thinking, the family legend about Donald's sister raising DBMacMillan is off in that it was his brother, not sister, and they didn't "raise" him but took him in for two years.   So the mystery now is the fact that I don't see Murdoch in any family census. I find him in 1880 in Provincetown - but that doesn't tell me much.   So... after this long winded email... I'm not even sure of my question - I'm too confused to know where to go next. Any ideas? information? Most welcomed! and as always... Thanks for listening.   Oh! and the story of Aunt Laura and others visiting an Uncle Rory at Boularderie... have another new photo which shows family visiting with Uncle Rory (labelled Grandpa MacDonald's brother) and his daughter Mary - they are standing in front of the MacDonald foundation. pretty cool - but... I had thought I had Rory (Roderick) in census married to a Catherine - but no daughter Mary :(   The confusion goes on....
