    1. [NS-CB] McDonalds of Port Morien/Newfoundland
    2. Ken MacDonald
    3. Hello everyone - I've been researching my family tree on both sides now for many years, but have consistently come up with a roadblock. My great-great grandfather was Alexander "Sandy" McDonald, born approx. 1820, and his wife was Ann Doyle, born approx. 1830. Their children are fairly easy to trace, the ones I know about all raised their families in the Port Morien area. I was told two things that may be helpful. My great-grandfather, John F. McDonald, was born in River Head, Newfoundland. Apparently Sandy was a carpenter (our family was known as the "Framers"), and he worked on building a bridge there. The family later moved back to Cow Bay (Port Morien) Cape Breton. Secondly, I was told by a distant cousin a number of years ago that Sandy's own family came from Broad Cove, Inverness County. I've checked the census and church records, scoured the Beaton Institute, and Nova Scotia Archives, and land records, and have had no luck.  If anyone has come across any information on Sandy and Ann, I would so much appreciate if you could share it. Many thanks, Ken MacDonald __________________________________________________________________ Connect with friends from any web browser - no download required. Try the new Yahoo! 3. Dear List, Is anyone going to the University of UCBB/Beaton in the near future? If so, is it possible to get a list of the 1959 graduates? Thanks a million. Have a great day. It is a bright sunny morning here and an ideal one to be on the golf links. It is our Longest Day of Golf where our ladies and men (4 per team) golf from dusk to dawn raising money for that horrible disease we all know as Cancer. Cheers, Margaret in Otawa

MacNeil, 68, of Big Bras d'Or, formerly of Point Aconi, died Friday, June 19, 2009, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Born at Bras d'Or West, he was the son of the late Mary Alice MacNeil. George will always be remembered for his talent as an entertainer. Across Cape Breton and beyond, he could always be found with his guitar ready to entertain. From childrens' pre-school centers, to schools, seniors homes and everything in between, he could always be counted on to step up and share his talent. People will not soon forget his many years with his band The Hersdsmen. George was a sportsman and although in later years he had become an armchair athlete. In his younger years he played hockey and softball. Batters had to be on their toes when 'Red Dog MacNeil' was on the mound. He was a longtime member of the Mill Creek Aces old-timers slow-pitch team and also the Sydney Mines Ramblers old-timers hockey team. His never-ending support for the Maple Leafs was always a point for much discussion among friends and family. The only thing he liked better than the Toronto team was a good feed of lobsters. As a member of Kinsmen, George was a founding organizer for the Sydney Mines and District Community Center and served for many years as president for the board of directors. He was a past president of both the Sydney Mines and Bras d'Or-Florence Kinsmen Clubs. He was very proud of being a life member of the Kinsmen Club of Canada. A farmer from a very young age, George was always active in support of progress in agriculture and the local and provincial farming community. He served as president of Bras d'Or District Farmers, Cape Breton County and Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, Nova Scotia Association of Exhibition Managers, United Farmers Co-op and Cape Breton Western Riders. One of his greatest accomplishments was his work for the Cape Breton Exhibition. He was an exhibitor there for over 60 years and during his 15 years as manager, he spearheaded much of modernization that took place. As a young boy, George became a 4-H member and his love for and belief in the 4-H program continued to this day. At 21 he became leader for the Bras d'Or calf club which later became the Northside 4-H Club. He had been a long-serving president of the Cape Breton County 4-H Leaders Council and had just stepped down as president of the Nova Scotia 4-H Council. In that capacity, he was also a member of the Canadian 4-H Council. He was on the board of directors for the Regional Rural Youth Development. He believed in the power of youth and he had a strong faith that the 4-H program played a very important role in the development of future leaders and citizens. Since moving to Big Bras d'Or, he became involved with community organizations, Ferry Wharf Development Association and various seniors groups. He was a volunteer fireman and was recently chosen as Fireman of the Year of the Big Bras d'Or Fire Department. George loved people. He enjoyed being with others and doing everything he could to help anybody. He was a good neighbour. Above all else he loved spending time with his family and friends whether at the farm or on the shores of Big Bras d'Or. He was our rock and will be missed by all who knew him. George is survived by his wife, Ruth MacNeil (MacLeod); his daughter, Mary Jane (Mathew) MacPhee, New Haven, P.E.I.; his sons, Donald (Lois) and Bill, both of Point Aconi; his six grandchildren, Ian, Kelsey, Brian and Nicole MacNeil, Brandon and Ethan MacPhee. The emergency personnel and the staff at the CB Regional Hospital. The staff at V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, who treated us as family. The Trestle Friends (that tribute meant SO MUCH to us!), and all those parents who opened their homes for Connor's friends to gather and support one another. All who traveled to be with us, and all who offered cars, even houses, for our out-of-town guests. All who visited us, or phoned, or emailed. Every story, every memory that you share helps us to smile. Thank you to so many friends who assisted us in countless ways, and who enveloped us in compassion and prayer. Your love and concern has certainly helped us in this time of great sorrow. We had no idea how many lives Connor touched. God bless each one of you. Our hearts are forever grateful. May you be "too blessed to be stressed"! George MacNeil, 68, of Big Bras d'Or, died Friday morning when the farm tractor he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer on Highway 162, commonly known as Prince Mine Road. At around 9:15 a.m., police received a 911 call from the driver of the tractor-trailer. Both the farm tractor and the tractor-trailer were travelling west toward the Point Aconi power plant. "There is merge lane from where the farm tractor started out," said RCMP Cpl. Ron MacDonald. "All indications are that just as the tractor-trailer was going past, the driver of the farm tractor moved out into the driving lane and into the path of the tractor-trailer." It is believed that the Quality Carrier tractor-trailer, driven by a woman from the United States, was carrying non-dangerous goods to the power plant. "You can see the tire marks where the tractor-trailer tried to avoid the farm tractor," he said. "The driver of the tractor-trailer was shaken up, but not injured." MacNeil was a longtime volunteer with a multitude of organizations throughout the Northside. He was a volunteer and leader with the 4-H movement for more than 25 years. Provincial senior 4-H program co-ordinator Ruth Grant said she can't imagine 4-H without George MacNeil. "He always made a significant impact. You always knew George was in the room in a very good way," she said. "I've know George for more than 20 years. He just stepped down as president of the Nova Scotia 4-H council in November." Grant said MacNeil loved the 4-H program and those in the program loved him. "This winter Nova Scotia 4-H adopted George's song, Follow the 4-H Trail, as it's official song. He played it at the Canadian 4-H council meetings a few weeks ago in Charlottetown and received a standing ovation." She added that MacNeil's spirit will live on in Nova Scotia 4-H forever. "He was a great leader, a great friend to me, he was a wonderful person." "This is such a tragedy," said Dave Lewis, events co-ordinator with the Cape Breton Exhibition. "Over his lifetime George was a big part of the exhibition, from showing cattle as a young man to managing and as a regular entertainer. "He put a lot of time and tremendous amount of work into the exhibition locally. More recently he sat on the Nova Scotia Association of Exhibitions on behalf of 4-H." Lewis added that MacNeil will be sadly missed by the farming and agriculture community and the community at large. "He touched a lot of lives." Gary Koziel, agricultural resource co-ordinator with the Department of Agriculture, said MacNeil's biggest contribution was his volunteer work with 4-H and the agriculture industry. "He was involved in so many volunteer organizations over the years, I'm sure there will be many, many tributes to this man in the coming days." MacNeil operated the only provincially inspected abattoir on Cape Breton Island for many years. Most recently he was a member of the Big Bras d'Or Volunteer Fire Department and active member of the Friends of the Big Bras d'Or Fire Hall. A well-known entertainer, he was only too happy to volunteer as master of ceremonies for numerous events. jcollins@cbpost.com ******************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgha.org

    1. Re: [NS-CB] Father Loughman Catholic church in Cape Breton
    2. The same principle applies to early Protestant church records. It is well known for example that a large number of baptisms in Cape Breton from the 1820s and 1830s are to be found in the Presbyterian Church records of Belfast, PEI. I also found some Catalone baptisms in the West Bay Church records from the 1830s. Both of those ministers did some travelling from time to time to areas where there was no Presbyterian clergy. I even found an 1812 marriage record for a couple from the Port Hastings area in Anglican Church records in Charlottetown, PEI. I assume the couple went to Charlottetown to be married. So in other words there was much movement both by clergy and by others in the early days. 2. Juanita MacDonald
    3. Hello Ann; When it comes to the 1870s and earlier, baptism and marriage records would most likely be found in registers in other churches, than the one presently located in a community. This would be true of places like Lingan, which would have been a mission and as such would not have a priest in residence. The registers become like a travelogue for a priest or minister. By noting the places where the baptisms, marriages and deaths have taken place, you can tell where a priest/minister was at a particular time. The entries will have at Sydney, at Lingan, at Bridgeport, at Louisbourg etc. A Catholic Church wasn't built at Lingan until 1862, so prior to that the people would have been served by a priest from another community. In the time frame you are transcribing records for the priest was Rev. John Loughnan and his residence was at St. Joseph's, North Sydney. The first churches would appear in communities large enough and wealthy enough to support a church and minister/priest on a full time bases. Arichat didn't have a resident priest until 1786. Sydney for example didn't have a resident priest until 1823. So if you were a Catholic living in Sydney, before 1823, you would have only seen a priest occasionally and he would most likely have come from Arichat. Or he could have come from, Halifax, Prince Edward Island, or even Quebec. It would all depend on who was available to send and where he came from in order to find the records for the marriages and baptisms he performed on his travels. So for those searching for marriage and baptism records, first look to see when the church was built in the community and had a full time minister or priest. If the family was in residence long before the church was built and had its own minister or priest, than broaden your search field to the surrounding communities looking for an established church with a minister or priest in residence. The earlier you go back in time, the greater distance you'll have to travel to find those records, if they survived. No Anne, I don't think there was "a mass exodus from North Sydney to Lingan in the 1850s." I just think it was Rev. Loughnan who was in Lingan, at his mission. 3. Hi,     For anyone interested, Rev. John Loughnan (not Loughman) was pastor of Sydney (North and South) from 07 Nov. 1846 till 15 Oct. 1853.  He was next the pastor of North Sydney and Sydney Mines (also Little Bras d'Or) from 15 Oct. 1853 till 27 Oct. 1878.   Cheers, Allan J. MacDougall?s valiant fight with cancer ended peacefully surrounded by his loving family at St. Martha?s Hospital, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, at the age of 66. Rocky?s courageous battle was an inspiration to all who knew him and he lived life to the fullest each and every day. The champ is gone but his memory will live on in the minds of all those who were fortunate to have known him. Born in Sydney Mines, on March 25, 1943, he was the son of the late Sylvine and Sadie (MacNeil) MacDougall. Rocky?s favorite pastime was spending quality time with his family whom he loved dearly. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Whitney Pier, Sydney, where he received his education and introduction to his boxing career. Upon completion of high school he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and after completing his military service he returned to university and graduated from St. F. X. University with a Bachelor of Business Administration & Education Degrees. This enabled Rocky to begin a teaching career in the Antigonish/Guysborough area which lasted over 27years. Although he was an accomplished boxer, he often stated that teaching young children gave him more satisfaction than anything he accomplished in the ring. Rocky had a remarkable career in boxing which started in 1958-59 as an amateur. He turned professional in 1960 and went on to capture the Canadian Professional Featherweight Championship in 1965, a title he held until 1967. In 1969 he regained the Canadian Featherweight Championship, which he held until he retired from competitive boxing in 1972. Rocky was a member of the Cape Breton & Nova Scotia Hall of Fame and the Canadian Professional & Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame along with being a life member of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and Boxing Nova Scotia. As a member of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association since 1972, Rocky held a number of positions such as a coach in amateur boxing, president and chief official for Boxing Nova Scotia, International Olympic AIBA referee and judge, and national chief referee and judge for the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association. In addition, he was a director of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association, Boxing Nova Scotia, the Canadian Professional Boxing Federation and a member of the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority since 1999. In 1974, in Miami, Florida, Rocky represented Canada as a referee and judge at the North American Boxing Championships. As an assistant boxing coach, Rocky took part in tournaments and championships all over the world including the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, the 1997 President?s Cup, Bogor, Indonesia, the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the 1999 Pan American Games, Winnipeg, Manitoba, to name a few. He was also the director of the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority. One of the special highlights of his life was the testimonial dinner held in his honour in Sydney on November 22, 2008, where he and his family had the opportunity to meet and greet former students, members of the boxing fraternity and long-time friends and acquaintances. Throughout his life, Rocky developed solid and strong friendships with many people and they will miss him greatly. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Beverly ?Bev?; son, Sean (Nicole); his two (2) daughters, Stacy, and Jody (Stephen) MacIntyre and grandchildren, Logan, Ayla, Avery, Lily, and Rory. He is also survived by his brother, Donald (Theresa) and their five children, Trevor, Kyle, Dwayne, Guy and Susan and his sister, Margaret (Jack) Carmichael and daughter, Marlene, along with many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John in childhood and an infant sister who died at birth. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral mass will be held at St. Ninian?s Cathedral, Antigonish, on Monday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Andrew Gillies presiding. Colello, Cape Breton Post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The pictures on display at the Bicentennial Gym during Francis (Rocky) MacDougall's testimonial dinner in November showed other aspects of his life besides boxing. His best friend for years, Blair Joseph, said those photos showed that along with being a well-known pugilist, MacDougall was also a referee, an educator and a dedicated family man. MacDougall's fight with cancer ended Friday, as the former Canadian featherweight champion died surrounded by friends and family at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish. He was 66. "He was a perfect gentleman out of the ring," said Joseph, the best man at MacDougall's wedding. The two were friends since they were teenagers and Joseph introduced Rocky to his wife, Beverly. "He was a school teacher by profession and he took a lot of pride in being a teacher. He told me one time that he was prouder of being a teacher and helping kids than he was of all the accolades in the ring. He was a real family man. He had three children, Sean, Stacy and Jody and they were the light of his life. He was more of a best friend to them aside from being their father." MacDougall, born in Sydney Mines, grew up in Whitney Pier. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and following his service, attended St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish with a bachelor of business administration and education degrees. MacDougall taught in the Antigonish/Guysborough area for 27 years. Joseph said that despite his success in the ring, MacDougall was even more satisfied with the impact he had on young minds in the classroom. MacDougall began his amateur boxing career in 1958-59 and turned pro in 1960. He trained in the basement of the former Venetian Gardens in downtown Sydney under coach John Cechetto along with the likes of Tyrone Gardiner, Ronnie Sampson and Blair Richardson, all Canadian champs. Gardiner described MacDougall as a natural athlete and a clean, smart fighter with a million-dollar pair of hands. "He was a quiet, easy going fella, a very smart fighter, very fast," said Gardiner, who trained and travelled with MacDougall for 12 years. "We trained together day in and day out and knew each other pretty well, but Rocky could hit with a left hook and a straight right, he was dangerous. He was a heavy hitter in the fight game." MacDougall went on to capture the Canadian professional featherweight championship in 1965, which he held until 1967. In 1969, he regained the national featherweight title which he held until his retirement from competitive boxing in 1972. Name a hall of fame and MacDougall is a member of it. He was named to both the Cape Breton and Nova Scotia sport hall of fames, the Canadian Professional and Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame and was named a lifetime member of both the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and Boxing Nova Scotia. He held a number of positions with the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and Boxing Nova Scotia and was an International Olympic AIBA referee and judge. He was also a director of the Canadian Professional Boxing Federation and a member of the Nova Scotia Boxing Authority since 1999. MacDougall served as both a referee and judge at the North American Boxing Championships in Miami, Fla. in 1974. As an assistant boxing coach, he took part in the a number of notable events, including the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, two Commonwealth Games in 1990 and 1998 and the Pan American Games in 1999. "Every once and a while, an individual comes along who does not seek glory for himself, but believes in an idea or principal to endeavour to establish the credibility for all athletes that follow from Cape Breton," said Rudy Plichie, reading the tribute speech he was set to read at MacDougall's testimonial. He worked as a cutman and co-trainer for MacDougall most of his career. "His goal, always, was good will through good example, someone who works persistently to achieve that end. Mr. Rocky MacDougall was one of those rare individuals." tjcolello@cbpost.com ******************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgha.org
