Hi Jane; Hope this helps Chalmers Jack MacKenzie's father was JAMES MACKENZIE, b.ca 1843 N.B. and his mother was JANET CAMPBELL, b.ca 1848 (? not listed on census where?) They are on the 1891 census for New Brunswick, Charlotte, sub dis. St. Stephen, page 19 Chalmers paternal (MacKenzie) grandfather was born in Nova Scotia, and grandmother b. N.B. Chalmers maternal (Campbell) grandfather was b. in U.S. and maternal granmother was b. N.B. His enlistment record are on line WWI . He was a Lieut. The Oxford Companion to Canadian History. 2004 carries an article on him. Sorry I don't have a copy of it, but it is suppose to have his obiturary in it. Chalmers Jack MacKenzie wife's first name was Geraldine __?__ The family were Presbyterians, but it appears Chalmers Jack MacKenzie coverted to Roman Catholic, and was bapt. Feb. 4 1937 at St. Andrews, N.B.. I would assume, he may have converted about the time of his marriage. Which is most often the case BUT can't say for sure though. Hope this helps you track his ancestral history back. Happy hunting Juanita MacDonald ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Nicholson" <jane@mrsnicholson.com> To: "N.S. She was the daughter of the late Robert John and Isabel (MacKinnon) MacLean. After graduating from Sydney Academy High School, she entered the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing, Halifax, and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1955. She is survived by her husband, David Janigan; daughters, Karen (Greg Mills), Mahone Bay and Cathy (David) Orser, Fredericton; grandchildren, John Janigan-Mills, Mahone Bay, Christopher and Craig Orser, Fredericton, and Erika Orser, Halifax; her sister, Hazel Gordon Morrison, Chester; nephews, Rob, Halifax and Jim Gordon, Toronto; and niece, Eleanor (James) Jarrett, Halifax. Marilyn was active with diverse interests that brought her a wide circle of friends and involvement in many associations, including the IODE, Friends of the VON, Byrony House, Hope Cottage, mixed with bridge, golf, music, cooking, travelling and reading with an encyclopedic knowledge. Intelligent, free-spirited, generous and fun, Marilyn did not take herself seriously and always put others at ease. No wonder she had so many friends. Her illness could not suppress those qualities, even at the end. We are immeasurably grateful to the physicians and nursing staffs of both the medical and radiation oncology services of the N.S. Cancer Centre who gave her a good quality of extended life and of the Palliative Care units on 3B and 5A, Centennial, Victoria General Hospital who made her last weeks comfortable. The Victoria Order of Nurses also kindly helped. Throughout her illness, Marilyn paid tribute to the health-care system for compassionate and timely care. Marilyn was also very moved by the loving support she received from numerous friends and neighbours when she was diagnosed with cancer. Marilyn absolutely understood how much she was loved, and how many people she touched during her life. We loved her and will miss her. Marilyn did not want a funeral, but a simple remembrance. The family will announce details of a celebration at a later date. In lieu of flower, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre, 1276 South Park St., Room 1-4040, Halifax, N.S. B3H 2Y9. ************************************************************** Patrick Mahar Card of Thanks - Patrick Mahar We, the family of the late Patrick Mahar sincerely express our appreciation to all who supported us in our recent loss. Dear List.... I have been asked by my husband's cousin Niall MacKenzie (s/o William Campbell MacKenzie) to try and find the link between Chalmers Jack MacKenzie ( a very distinguished man, see below) and Neil John MacKenzie, his grandfather (and my husband's too, of course. ) My cousin's father, William Campbell Mackenzie, did not know the link, but his grandmother, Kate Campbell MacKenzie, who died at 103 in 1979, did know the relationship. Nial John MacKenzie was born in North River in 1878 and died in Baddeck in 1957. H was the son of Murdoch MacKenzie and Flora MacKenzie. Kate Campbell, his wife, was born in Big Hill in 1876 and died in Baddeck in 1979. She spoke Gaelic before English and was famed for her understanding of genealogy. Their son, William (Bill) Campbell MacKenzie, was born in 1912 and died in 2008. It was from Uncle Bill that I have the MacKenzie genealogy, translated by him from the Gaelic as his mother told it to him in the 1960s. So what I have is straight from the horse's mouth, as it were. Now, here is a little on this remarkable Chalmers Jack MacKenzie, born at St. Stephen New Brunswick on 10 July 1888 and died in Ottawa at 96 on 26 February 1984. To quote the Canadian Encyclopedia, he was "the single most important figure in the postwar growth of Canadian Science." He was trained in civil engineering at Dalhousie and Harvard, was president of the National Research Council, Atomic Energy of Canada and was the Chancellor of Carleton College before it became Carleton University. The yellowed newspaper clippings sent by my husband's cousin date from probably the late 50s as there is a mention of something "not long ago" happening in 1954. These clippings, however, do not mention his parents, but they were among Uncle Bill's papers from his mother, so there must have been some relationship. Chalmers John MacKenzie did spent a lot of his time in Saskatchewan where he was a professor of civil engineering at U of S from 1919 to 1939. I am wondering that if, on this skimpy information, any of you will know anything about this man. Niel John MacKenzie had three brothers, but two died young of tuberculosis and were not married. I know this because Kate Campbell was engaged to them both before she married Neil. The third brother, Murdoch, died at 40 but I have no idea if he ever married. So I believe the relationship between the two men is likely a distant cousinship, but it would be interesting to know. Thanks as always, Jane (Nicholson) in Ottawa

Hello Lee; Though my sister (Bernardine Campbell), said to reply to you and not her, I've chosen to come by way of the list. Doing so, that your posting doesn't get lost under another subject heading. Archibald MacDonald (aka Archie) 1811 - Jan 31, 1902; and Harriet Dewey MacDonald 1820-May 10, 1910 graves are located at the Aspy Bay United Church Cemetery, Cape North. Archibald's birth date according to the 1901 census was 18 Feb 1810 and Harriet's was 27 March 1820. According to Cape North & Vicinity Archibald's birthdate, was 17 Feb 1810, and d. 1901. Just which information [census, tombstone, or the book] has the correct dates, is anyone's guess, but personally I'd lean towards Rev. D. MacDonald (author of Cape North & Vicinity, 1933), in this case as these people were his ancestors and family. These MacDonalds (as you probably all ready know Lee), but for others who may not know, are the descendants of JOHN MACDONALD & MARGARET MATHESON of Kilvaxter, Kilmuir, Troternish, Skye Scotland. John & Margaret's two sons Alexander and Archibald came first to Sydney, Cape Breton, in 1828. Alexander would come to Cape North ca, 1835, and Archibald would go to the US, and than later returned to Cape Breton & settle permanently at Cape North. John & Margaret and the rest of their family, from Skye would follow ca 1840 and settle also at Cape North.
