As you learned that your life on this earth was drawing to a close, you worried what was going to happen to us without you. You do not have to worry, by keeping us all close and telling us how much you loved us daily we are finding the strength to carry on. We are at peace knowing that you have been reunited with our dad and you both are in the loving arms of God. MacEachen, 90, a longtime resident of North Sydney, slipped peacefully into Gods hands, with dignity and without pain, on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Mike and Corrine (Francis) MacEachen. He lived all his life in Cape Breton, though at a young age, his parents and four young brothers, migrated to the United States. Roy, or 'Sol', as he was known to many in his early years, excelled at hockey and baseball and enjoyed all sports. He was very active in his hometown of North Sydney, and was proud to have been a co-founder of the 562 Cabot Squadron Air Cadets, and was with them in 1967, the first time they were named Top Squadron in Canada. Roy also coached pee-wee hockey in the 1950s, having been an outstanding player himself in the junior circuit in the mid 1930s. He continued his interest in working with young people by helping organize Little League baseball in the Town of North Sydney, in the early 50s, and held the position of president of that league for eleven consecutive years. He was always up to the challenge and willing to lend a helping hand at a moments notice. Roy and his wife Vera, were active members of Kinsmen and Kinettes, as well as enjoying memberships for many years, at the Seaview Golf Club. He was a former member of St. Joseph parish, North Sydney, and most recently, as member of Our Lady of Fatima parish, Sydney River. Roy was in his 57th year of service with the Royal Canadian Legion, through his affiliation with Branch #19 in North Sydney. Having been a wireless operator during the Second World War, Roy maintained his interest in communications, right into the computer age. Duplicate bridge was definitely one of Roy's passions. As well as being a good player, he obtained his director's licence, and was a qualified teacher of the game. He regularly played bridge online. Round dancing became another passion, and took he and his partner to numerous get-togethers in Canada and the U.S. For the 23 years prior to retiring in 1985, Roy worked for the provincial government as the Cape Breton Area Zone Controller for Emergency Measures (EMO). His interaction with the various municipal leaders, mayors, police and fire chiefs and departments, along with hospital and home for special care administrators, and search and rescue organizations, made his job, he said, "always a challenge and a pleasure." The fact that Roy's passing came quickly on the heals of his returned cancer, is a blessing. Thank you to all that offered comforting words and support during the last few weeks as his illness progressed. Roy is survived by his son, Greg, Sydney; grandchildren, Christopher, Halifax, and Beth Anne, Dartmouth; brothers, Mike, Largo, Fla., and Ted, Santa Clara, Calif. He was prdeceased by his wife of 43 years, Vera (MacLean) MacEachen in 1986, and by brothers, Gordon and Frank. There will be no visitation by request. A graveside committal service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 7 from Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ******************************************** Mrs. Yvonne Santucci Born in 02/03/1927 at New Waterford , Nova Scotia , Canada Yvonne R. 3. Hello All, Does anyone know about a Dr MacPherson besides what is written below. My grandfather was one of his patients Love to hear more about the man. Lark Story below Dr. MacPherson, the Cancer Doctor By Mary Barrington Cape Breton Magazine Mary Barrington: He¹s dead and so is she. She took over after he died. And the funny part of it was, she died of cancer. She had cancer of the bladder. That was an inward. ( An inward is a cancer that would require surgery to place the poison poultice. Dr. MacPherson wasn¹t a real doctor and while he did get one or two medical doctors to prescribe analgesics ... painkillers ... he was never able to find one who would assist him in attacking an internal cancer.) He told me it was a faith cure that some priest has passed down. I had it. He drew it for me. I¹ll show you. 39 years ago. See, see the scar there, (on her chest), You couldn¹t tell there was anything there. Any more than that I had a poison down here. (At her side, under her arm) And I thought that was where the cancer was. He always carried the stethoscope with him. Because he said, ³if you had a cancer, that it beat with your heart.... that it would beat as your heart beats. So that¹s how he found out where that was. ³That cancer was there for six years,² he told me, ³And do you know where the root traveled²? Under my arm, that¹s where the end of the root was. And he used to say to me, ³That damn root won¹t let go.² Who knows what it was. Nobody knew that. I knew everything about the treat[ment] only what was in the poison poultice. And the poultice so help me wasn¹t any bigger than the corner of that card. And you know what the old corn plasters used to look like that. He took the lance and like he was going to vaccinate you, made a mark around here. (a six inch circle around the cancer on her chest). Then he put this black poultice on it. Put something over it to hold it there. I¹ll tell you now what it looked like when it started to come out. First, it sank in. I¹ll bet you often saw the old-fashioned yeast cakes, the hard ones. About as big as a fifty cent piece. This whole thing sank in from where he circled. Then when it was dead, it started coming out. And it looked --- you know the old red jellyfish, the blood suckers that you see in the water --- that was what it looked like on the inside --- Like roots and roots and roots, like thread. You know what the inside of a mackerel looks like-- the fine gut in a mackerel, you often saw them. The same color, just like that. Oh thousands of them. It would come out and they would be on the back. On the back of the poultice. Well, he would dig that every morning and change the poultice. This was the second poultice. He was drawing it then with the yolk of an egg and turpentine. I saw it and drew it myself, dear. I came home to Sydney from North Sydney when he started drawing it. He told me if I wanted to I could go home but to be awful careful not to use that arm in case I break a root. You see those roots are so small and the least thing will break them off. Then if you broke a root, boy, it would go all through you. Now where they cut a breast off or anything, they don¹t get the whole thing. There finished. Had to get it all. Every bit. And when you were at Dr. MacPherson¹s, he didn¹t want you to wash your face if you could get along without it., let alone have a bath. You weren¹t suppose to go near water. Or if there was frost on the window, you mustn¹t go near it. Oh boy, was he strict. He told me afterwards, there¹s 35 different kinds of cancer. He told me that. Some of them are harder I guess to cure. Some of them are a liquid. Some of them are bleeding cancers. He used to sit down and tell me this because I used to tell him queer things, sit down and laugh. But the doctors were the devils. Unless they had somebody of their own, then they would send them over. But the Steel Company recognized him. They paid that. It was fifty dollars for to draw the cancer. They would also pa your board, two dollars a day. (Dr. MacPherson was also recognized by the miners, he was included on the coal company check off, a prepaid medical plan for doctors, drugs and hospital.) We began to collect old cures after Dr. MacMillan of Baddeck told us about sheep manure tea, a cure once in general use on Cape Breton. Others have told us it was especially good for fever and to bring out measles. We hope to offer more and would like to receive letters from our readers telling of other home remedies as practized in their part of Cape Breton, And should anyone know where a photograph of Dr. MacPherson can be seen, we would like to know of that as well.

    3. Cape Breton Post: Tuesday, June 30, 2009 WEBSITE ON HISTORY OF ISLAND'S WORK LAUNCHED TODAY North Sydney - Work through Time: Cape Breton Stories of Land and Sea, a colllection of 24 stories, both oral and written, of how people in industrial and rural Cape Breton have built their communities and overcome adversity through their work experience, is being launched today. One of the stories features the Archibald families of North Sydney. Information on the Archibalds was collected by Ron MacDonald of North Sydney Historical Society. Members of the Archibald clan came to North Sydney and Sydney Mines from Ireland, Scotland and the United States by way of Colchester County, immigrating to Canada as United Empire Loyalists after the American Revolution. The greater families of Archibald were represented worldwide in all the professions. In their direct political involvement there were eight Archibald family members of the provincial houses of assembly and parliament coming from Colchester, North Sydney's Thomas Dickson Archibald served on the legislative council and executive council (provincial cabinet) in Halifax and in 1867, when Confederation was won, Sir John A. Macdonald appointed him to the senate, where he served until his death in 1890. The Work through Time: Cape Breton Stories of Land and Sea website will be fully accessible to the public today at http://www.workthroughtime.ca The official launch party, with music and refreshments, will be open to the public from 4-6 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church Museum in Sydney. Work through Time: Cape Breton Stories of Land and Sea is a joint effort of the C@P Society of Cape Breton County and the Inverness County C@P Network Society. The Community Access Program (C@P) is a government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada that aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively. The project was made possible with the support of the Department of Heritage through the Canadian Culture Online Strategy. ................................... HAPPY CANADA DAY everyone and do visit the website http://www.workthroughtime.ca and see a little of Cape Breton's history in this great country of ours. A special thank you to Dr. Robert J. Morgan, for his introductions, and to all those who contributed stories and took part in setting up the website. The website offers something unique I believe as it can be viewed or listened to in 4 languages: English; French; Gaelic; and Mi'kmag. Happy hunting Juanita MacDonald

Neil was born on May 22, 1931, in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, N.S., fourth of 12 children to Thomas Clarke MacPherson, a coal miner, and his wife Gertrude (née Boutilier). He grew up in Glace Bay during the Great Depression and the Second World War, experiencing, but not at all comprehending, a Cape Breton church service conducted entirely in Gaelic as late as 1942. In February 1951, Neil volunteered at age 19 for active service in the Korean War with The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR). He saw regular infantry combat as a Bren gunner in 1951-1952, including the Battle of Hill 355 (?Little Gibraltar?) with ?D? Company of the 1st Battalion in October 1952; his younger brother Gus also served with him in the RCR during the war. Neil twice narrowly escaped being killed by enemy mortar fire; once when a near-miss blew off his shirt except for the cuffs and collar, and another time when his bunker was demolished by a direct hit shortly after he left it earlier than usual to fetch his breakfast. In another incident, he and a fellow Canadian guided an American lieutenant and some of his men out of a minefield that the Americans had entered by accident; in gratitude, the lieutenant arranged to give Neil?s unit a much sought-after jeep. Neil later qualified as an Active Force paratrooper with the RCR in the dedicated airborne role, serving as part of the NATO forces in West Germany during 1953-1955. As an acting junior non-commissioned officer, he normally sent the bulk of his monthly pay home to Glace Bay, enabling his family to build an addition to their house. He was honourably discharged at Wolseley Barracks, London, Ont., in February 1957 having earned the Canadian Korean Medal, the UN Service Medal for Korea, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea and the Special Service Medal with ?NATO? clasp. He and his wife Orma Belle (née Millman) were married in December 1962 in Prince Edward Island, having two sons, Nelson (b. 1963 in Calgary) and Andrew (b. 1966 in Summerside, P.E.I.). Neil and Orma were married just over 38 years, with Orma offering selfless dedication and support to her husband and family under often trying circumstances. Neil resided permanently in Calgary since 1973, working in a variety of occupations until he was awarded a veteran?s pension for disabilities acquired during his war-time service. Orma predeceased him there, dying of cancer on Jan. 7, 2001. Neil is survived by his sons; his brothers, Gus, Mark, Daniel and Thomas; and his sisters, Gertrude, Isabel and Joan. Graveside services will be held at Queen?s Park Cemetery (3219 ? 4th Street NW, Calgary), Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Nelson and Andrew would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Extendicare Cedars Villa, particularly those in the Poplar Unit and especially unit manager Lee Ann Luciano. Their care and attention to Neil since 2007 has been exemplary, and Lee Ann?s special understanding of Neil assured that he experienced the most comfortable and happy life possible throughout his residence there. In living memory of Neil MacPherson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre St. North, Calgary, Alta.
