In life and in music, it came from the heart for Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland. The widely respected and beloved musician, firmly rooted in the island?s rich fiddling tradition, died Thursday night after a battle with cancer. He was 54. ?I?m going to remember Jerry as a brilliant, gentle giant,? said Joella Foulds, artistic director of the Celtic Colours International Festival. ?Jerry made such an enormous contribution to the music but he also was a very special person in that everybody really, really respected and loved him. He was a great person to bring people together and he?s just going to be so, so missed.? Born and raised in Massachusetts, Holland began to learn the fiddle at the age of five. His family made annual summer visits to Cape Breton and he eventually made the island his permanent home in 1975. Foulds said Holland dedicated himself to the music and established himself as a sought-after performer. ?He basically played with everybody and got along with everybody. When he started composing tunes on a regular basis they were tunes that the locals picked up and played because they were so playable and really wonderful,? she said. ?The musicians know who?s really, really good and that was Jerry.? Ashley MacIsaac, one of the most recognized faces of Cape Breton fiddling, said Holland was a mentor for a whole generation of young fiddlers who were in awe of the sweet sound of his fiddle playing, his distinct melody lines which set him apart from other composers, and his very kind nature as a person. ?He?s just a wonderful person who supported everybody and never had a bad word to say about anyone,? he said. MacIsaac said Holland had been there for him since the beginning. ?The first television show I ever performed on, a show called Up Home Tonight, Jerry was the fiddler who played for me to stepdance when I was eight and since that I?ve had many years of reading his music and listening to his playing and eventually I recorded and did a video for and had quite a bit of success with one of his tunes called Brenda Stubbert.? Stubbert herself, used three words to sum up Holland on Friday. ?Love, laughter and music,? she said, of her longtime friend and fellow fiddler. Howie MacDonald said Holland raised the bar for his fellow musicians and generously shared his knowledge and music with others. ?He was a musician?s musician.? An active performer and recording artist, Holland?s tunes, books and recordings remain influential around the globe as he has travelled the world with his music making numerous trips overseas to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Germany, Mexico, England, France, as well as the United States. Carsten Panduro, director of the Tonder Festival in Denmark where Holland played on several occasions, said the Cape Breton fiddler?s music resonated with audiences wherever he performed for one simple reason. ?It came from the heart. When this guy took the stage, that was it. There was something magic about him,? he said, noting Holland was one of the first people that made people in Denmark stand up and take notice of music from Cape Breton. ?I have the deepest respect for Jerry not only as a musician but a man meeting a serious illness. He?s going to be missed by a lot of people,? added Panduro. Anni Lehmann, also with the Tonder Festival, said she?ll remember Holland as a kind, humble man with a great personality and sense of humour. His talent also shone through every time he took the stage. ?You can speak with your fiddle if you?re a great fiddler and he was a great fiddler that way and that came across,? she said. The Celtic Colours International Festival announced earlier this year that they would pay tribute to Holland in their 2009 event and Foulds said Friday that show will go ahead. ?It will be a celebration of his life and a tribute to him,? she said. Charles Lorway Sr. remembered as man committed to community print this article BY LAURA JEAN GRANT The Cape Breton Post SYDNEY ? A prominent businessman, ship?s agent and lawyer is being remembered as a man committed to his community. Charles Lorway Sr. died Wednesday. He was 97. Stuart MacLeod, president of MacLeod Lorway Insurance which formed in 1976 as the result of a merger between the MacLeod and Lorway insurance companies, said Lorway was a respected businessman. ?The Lorway family has been in business in Sydney for well over 100 years and Charlie carried on the family tradition of honesty and integrity and was well known throughout Cape Breton. They did business in Ingonish, in Gabarus and Forchu. They weren?t just in Sydney. They were all over,? he recalled. MacLeod described Lorway as first and foremost a gentleman. He was also very physically active. ?He played basketball well into his 70s, every day at noon at the Y,? he said. Sydney lawyer John Khattar knew Lorway for more than 30 years as fellow lawyers and Rotarians. Lorway joined the Rotary Club of Sydney in 1935. ?(Lorway) was a man who had great vision for the area,? he said. ?He had quite a good business and community sense that were interwoven together and the way he helped out the community besides the business was through his affiliation with the Rotary Club where he had a keen interest in the youth of the community and his big, big contribution was with our air force squadron. He was involved with that for many, many years as the key contact between the club and the squadron.? Khattar said Lorway was also very generous and always made time for people. ?He was very much a mentor,? said Khattar. ?He emphasized . . . that when you worked in a community you also contributed to that community. That was a very important part of his philosophy, I think.? Lorway has been recognized as a driving force in several important projects on the island including the construction of the Canso Causeway and the locating of the Canadian Coast Guard College in the region. His community work included being a director for the YMCA, a member and chairman of the board of stewards of his church, presidency of the local board of trade, a Nova Scotia director of the Maritime Board of Trade, and a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Lorway is survived by his wife, Wayne, four children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A private memorial is planned. ljgrant@cbpost.com ******************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgha.org

Looking for information regarding the family of Hugh Gillis and Elizabeth Thomas. I know that Hugh died in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1908, and Elizabeth died, I believe before 1901, but I seem to be unable to find out what happened to the rest of the family. Can anyone help me? Hello, Would anyone have information on where the parish records from the old St Patrick's church may have ended up ? Thanks Peggy
Would you know anything on this man? He is supposed to be Cape Breton born. His name is Murdoch "Stewart" Macdonald BA, MA (Dal) PhD (Cornell) 1879-1936. He was known as Stewart and was Presbyterian. He became a prominent professor at UNB and in Winnipeg and who ended up in the US where he was killed accidentally Melrose MA 12 May 1936. He isn't in the Sydney Post Record index. He was supposed to have a brother James Hugh MacDonald who lived near St. Peters in 1937. There is a James Hugh McD who dies in GB in 1952 and is from Inverness Co., no mention of St. Peters. I did find a family in Whycocomagh in 1881 that has both a James and Stewart. The age of Stewart is off by two years. The census below could be when Stewart is in Halifax attending Dal., as far as I can figure out. 1901 Halifax 5 - 53 McDonald Stewart M Lodger S May 2, 1877 age 23 Any suggestions would be appreciated. LIFESTYLES Cape Breton Post on 14/07/09 (Photo) Sr. Joan Walker, who is presently serving in Lethbridge, Alta., enjoys a cup of tea during a visit with her mother in Alder Point. Julie Collins - Cape Breton Post Woman celebrates golden jubilee with Sisters of St. Martha BY JULIE COLLINS The Cape Breton Post ALDER POINT - It's all about people for Sr. Joan Walker, who has travelled extensively during her 50 years with the Sisters of St. Martha. "It has been quite a life and one where I still feel I can contribute," said the 74-year-old, whose service has been as varied as the communities in which she has lived. With a great love for children, Sr. Walker said the decision to join the sisters was a difficult one. She credits family and her upbringing in helping decide on a religious life. "We are a family of prayer and one of love and forgiveness to and of each other. I worked for a number of years and at 22 years of age felt ready to commit to life as a sister. During that life you are asked to take on many jobs and learn so much; it is a lifelong learning experience." As a young girl growing up in Alder Point, Sr. Walker and her sisters did a lot of babysitting. "I'm the fourth oldest in a family of 21, so people knew we had experience changing diapers and taking care of children. I've always loved working with people of all ages." Her mother Genevieve Walker, 94, still lives in Alder Point. Her father, who worked as a stevedore, was killed in 1964 at 55 years of age. "At that time my mother still had seven children in school." Her 16 brothers and sisters, who are spread out across the country along with their families, try to meet every four years to catch up on family news and spend time together. For a time after high school, Sr. Walker worked at a variety of jobs and remembers with fondness the people she met while working at Josie's Canteen in North Sydney. She said she was also influenced by the life of Fr. Pius Hawley, who at one time served as a moderator of the Catholic Youth Organization. "He put hard questions to us as young men and women on what we wanted to do with our lives and how we were going to contribute to mankind," she said. "I feel a peace daily, because I'm where God wants me to be. That is so important when you think that there are so many people who search all their lives for that peace, they don't know where they fit." Sr. Walker and seven of her former classmates took part in a special celebration at St. Martha's Convent in Antigonish. There was also a special mass at St. Anne's Church in Alder Point where she celebrated her golden jubilee with family and friends. Sr. Walker still does full-time ministry. "We go where we are needed, that is why we were founded, to work with people of all ages and walks of life," she said. "We only know to be faithful and to live one day at a time." Presently posted in Lethbridge, Alberta, doing jail chaplaincy, over the years Sr. Walker has managed kitchen and laundry facilities. She served in Boston, worked for nearly 10 years in Ottawa at a seminary for young men preparing for the priesthood and spent four years doing parish work and jail chaplaincy in St. Kitts in the West Indies. "There are six of us in a convent in Lethbridge and we look after the older sisters in our congregation. By the grace of God, just like a family, you get along." jcollins@cbpost.com
Dear List, Let's try this again; the last one left my hands far too soon! Widow Catherine MacDonald, born roughly 1796-1801, widow of Donald MacDonald, had the following family: Ewen/Hugh (1825); Marion/Sarah (1828); Ann (1832); Ann (1832); Janet/Jessie (1834); Angus (1836); and Archibald (1838). I don't find them in To The Hill of Boisdale. I hope this configuration of names means something to somebody. I'm very anxious to know where they settled after leaving Benbecula in the 1840s. Hello List, Does anyone recognize this MacDonald family? I'm not certain that they settled in Cape Breton, but indications are they did. The common names don't help, but maybe the configuration rings a bell for someone. I need to know where they settled. The family left the island of Benbecula, Parish of South Uist, Scotland, in the 1840s; the baptismal record of one child is found there in the Catholic church. Thanks George
Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knows anything on the people below? This is from the 1881 census in South Side Whycocomagh .This Jane MacDonald I believe would have been a sister to Malcolm MacDonald ( my great grandfather, born 1850-1852).Malcolm (as a newborn) was brought up at his Aunt Catherine's house in Brigend (now Roseburn) Family history states Malcolm's mother died after giving birth to Malcolm. But there is some doubt as whether his mother died after his birth or if she died on July 14 1865 in Ainslie Glen as records suggest. Malcolm and Jane were children of John MacDonald and Peg MacKinnon from Ainslie Glen. Peg (MacKinnon ) MacDonald was the daughter of Neil "Ban" and Jane(Cameron) MacKinnon.Peg and John had the following children that we know of -Ann, Hugh, John ,Catherine, Malcolm ,Jane,Neil , Mary and Archie. Peg was a sister to Captain Loddy Mackinon from Ainslie Glen , Catherine (Mrs.MacInnis who raised him in Brigend) Archie and Mary. I don't know where John , Peg and Jane are buried .Malcolm is buried in Stewartdale. In the 1871 census Jane is in the MacLean home listed as a housekeeper. The last four children's births are online .Jane MacDonald is their mother ,Hugh MacLean is their father. In later years they moved to Churchview , their home was on the turn from the Stewartdale cemetery (the Whycoomagh Port Hood Road better known as the Roseburn road passes by the property today) In later censuses Jane is listed as a MacLean . Hugh is alive in the 1901 census , in 1911 Jane is listed as a widow. Thanks in advance to anyone who might help understand the connections in this family.
