    2. Phil; Must say that I disagree with you. They do have a place and I for one am thankful that Carol and others have taken the additional time to enter them on the daily updates. I have found additional research information from these cards of thanks and remembrances that I did not have before and thus they are a very important part of my research work. As all the items are on one page as submitted by Carol and others, it is very simple to just cross over them and go on to an item that is more important to your the reader. As you say, everyone has an opinion and this is mine Don

    3. I actually found the death date of a distant cousin a week or two ago. He died 15 years ago, and this information was in an In Memoriam entry. I'm fine with them. They remind me of growing up in Cape Breton and reading those In Memoriams in the Classified section of the paper. 1. [NS-CB] About Cape Breton Deaths as they now appear
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Folks, As you may have noticed of late, that Memoriams & Cards of Thanks have been included in the Cape Breton Deaths that I do. Should one go to the free online Cape Breton Post, you will see the list of what they call obituaries. There is nothing telling you that these are not all obits. One must click on each name to view. At this point, I copy and paste each to email in the list order. At one time, before the format changed, one would only get obituaries in this list. Now, I for one, know that not all folk have obituaries in the paper, but sometimes a Memoriam or Cards of Thanks may be all that's to be had. Now here's another point to be made. Not all the obits that are in the free online list which many of you folks view, actually appear in the hardcopy paper, and there are other obtis in the hardcopy paper that don't make the free online list. Before I send the obits out either at night or in the morning, I must first view both methods, to insure that nothing is missing, especially from the hardcopy paper. In order to eliminate the Memoriams & Cards of Thanks, I will also have to eliminate the original listing, change all the numbers, etc. These Memoriams & Cards of Thanks are in the hardcopy paper, but they are scattered throughout. If you're not interested in the Memoriams & Cards of Thanks, then just skip over them. They are mixed with the obituaries. Carol MacLean out here in very sunny and hot Vancouver, BC

    1. [NS-CB] MacIver/ MacDonald Family
    2. Paul White McIver
    3. Hello, We are here in Oklahoma, USA and researching our MacIver & MacDonald family. Our Great Grandfather Malcolm MacIver/McIver was born and raised in Cape Breton. He came to the US married our Great Grandmother and when my Grandfather was 2 years old passed away. I guess our family lost touch with our relatives in Cape Breton. Until recently we knew nothing of our MacIver/ MacDonald heritage. We were so excited to have connected with a few relatives and learn what information they had to share. We know that our Great Grandfather Malcolm was from a large family there in Cape Breton and hope to connect with some more relatives. We would love to see photos and get any more information that relatives would have to share. Thank you, Paul and Jo McIver ( Not sure why but I guess Grandfather Malcolm after coming to the US started spelling our family name McIver?? :>) Here is our family tree starting with Grandfather Malcolm: Malcolm MacIver born 1870/71 Parents were: Neil MacIver and Catherine MacDonald (her parents were Angus Elder MacDonald & Ann Smith) Siblings were: Donald Dan Isabella Ann Catherine Angus Christena Neil S. Christena (there were 2 sisters named Christena the oldest died as a baby) Margaret (Maggie) John Grandparents were: Malcolm MacIver and Isabella MacKenzie MacDonald (after Grandmother Isabella passed away I believe Grandfather Malcolm married Catherine MacAulay (Little Granny) _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live™ SkyDrive™: Store, access, and share your photos. I have an Elizabeth (known as Bessie / Betty) Isabelle MacDonald born in 1919, who married a Horace Robbins .Horace was a British Home Child who was placed with Danny Cameron from the Ashfield - Big Marsh Extension area . Elizabeth grew up in the Ashfield area. She would possibly be a half sister to Fredrick MacKinnon . I was wondering if anyone knew this family and could tell me if I am on the right track? I was wondering IF Betty's mother was Breadlebane Isabelle MacDonald who married John Dan MacKinnon (son of John and Christy Bell MacKinnon) on June 4th 1926 in Whycocomagh. Breadlebane Isabelle MacDonalds parent's would be John B. and Bessie MacDonald . Thanks, Arlene _________________________________________________________________ More storage. By his teens, Jerry immigrated to Cape Breton, where his musicianship and inspiration helped usher in an entire generation of young players. 1. [NS-CB] Priest celebrates 50 years of service - Eastern Canada's first ordained Ukrainian priest
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Cape Breton Post July 20, 2009 Priest celebrates 50 years of service Fr. John Tataryn became Eastern Canada's first ordained Ukrainian priest 50 years ago ERIN POTTIE The Cape Breton Post SYDNEY - Eastern Canada's first ordained Ukrainian priest was honoured in Cape Breton on Sunday for his golden anniversary. Fr. John Tataryn, who was born and raised in Whitney Pier, was ordained 50 years ago at Holy Redeemer Church in his home community on May 24, 1959. Tataryn was celebrated during a dinner of about 170 people at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Parish in Whitney Pier. "We had a big procession down Victoria Road because that was something unique at the time," said Tataryn of his ordination at age 26. A graduate of Sydney Academy, Tataryn later attended the former St. Francis Xavier College where he received a bachelor's degree. He then travelled south to the Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington D.C., where would take classes at the Catholic University of America. Tataryn's first assignment was at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church in Etobicoke, Ont. In 1959, it became clear that a new parish was needed for the young Ukrainian families flocking to the area. Fifty years later, St. Demetrius has its own parish building, and the parish community includes three assistant priests, five deacons, a day school that can accommodate up to 300 children, a 250-unit senior residence and 150-bed nursing home. "We have very good people and I enjoy working with people," said Tataryn, who at age 75 remains parish priest of St. Demetrius. In 1913, at age 15, Tataryn's father moved from Ukraine to Cape Breton to find a job in the steel industry. His mother immigrated to Cape Breton with her parents a year earlier. "They were only going to stay long enough to make enough money to go home and buy land ... but then the First World War broke out," said Tataryn. "This is in a sense my home, my roots are here and I have a good part of my family buried here." Tataryn remembers when Whitney Pier had Atlantic Canada's only Ukrainian parish. He said at one time there were actually two Ukrainian parishes - one was Catholic and the other was Orthodox - but gradually as the Ukrainian population declined the latter was closed. Tataryn said he has returned to Nova Scotia numerous times over the years, including in 2000, when he inducted into St. Francis Xaxier University's Hall of Thought. He hopes to continue preserving Ukrainian heritage in Canada and plans to return to Cape Breton to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Whitney Pier's Holy Ghost parish in 2012. epottie@cbpost.com

    1. [NS-CB] Archibald McPhail and Agnes Rowe Cameron
    2. Gord Benedict
    3. Hi all you helpful people!! I am looking for the parents of my great grand parents and, if possible, their parents too. It seems finding ancestors in Canada is a hit and miss sort of adventure. I am planning to spend my vacation time and dollars in Canada and what better place than in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton where my ancestors came from. The only information I have on my great grandparents comes from novascotiagenealogy.com. In a Presbyterian church register, the marriage of Archibald McPhail to Agnes R. Cameron is listed in Cape Breton County on 25 Sept. 1874. Apparently, Archibald was born in Schooner Pond and my older relatives think he was born on 20 Oct 1850. I have information from my family that Agnes Cameron was perhaps born in Caledonia, but nobody is totally sure of that. The suspected birthdate for her is 30 Dec 1857. The parents' first names are listed on the marriage entry. However, I can't decipher the first name of his father. It looks like it might be Alexander, maybe Abraham? It's an abbreviated bit of scrawl. Further down the same page is another entry (#168) in which the same abbreviation is given for another marriage. I wonder if anyone knows what the abbreviated name is. I can't make a safe guess. The mother's name is given as Anne - no last name is recorded for either which offers a bit of a challenge as far as the wife's family is concerned. I've never been to the east coast and am looking forward to it. I would love to hear where I would best find further information on my family, in Cape Breton? Halifax? In provincial archives? Local church registers? I really have no idea where to start and would like to keep chasing the wild geese to a minimum, if possible. If some of you experienced Nova Scotia/Cape Breton researchers have any tips, I'd appreciated hearing from you. And thanks in advance for whatever information is provided.
