Susan continued her education at Mount Allison, Sir George William, Dalhousie and the University of British Columbia. She taught music in the elementary school system for more than 30 years. Susan?s interest in the arts, and music in particular, was fostered and nourished at home. In 1960 her maternal grandmother, Flora Marsh, made this entry in her diary, ?Susan is quite a young lady and will be 16 on Wednesday. I?ve just discovered that she has a very beautiful voice. She asked me to play for her and I was amazed at the sweetness and breadth of her tone and she told me she is anxious to take singing lessons.? Her home for the past 35 years was Powell River on the west coast of British Columbia, a city recognized for its international choral festival. Susan sang with the Powell River Chorus and the Malaspina Singers, directed a youth choir and performed in recitals with musical friends. Earlier this year Susan was honoured at the Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts when she was presented with the David Pike Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to the arts. Susan was a keen reader with a special interest in Canadian literature, loved movies, the theatre and all aspects of the arts. I suggest we back off and permit this worthwhile and free service provided by a hardworking volunteer to be conducted in the manner that has been her practise. It is a simple matter of passing over the items that may not be of interest to an individual. "For God's sake let us not bite a gift horse in the ass" or whatever that saying is/was. Don: I agree with you. It's easier for Carol to do them the way she is doing it. I thank her everyday for the work she and her friends are doing. Hang on folks...we should let Carol in Vancouver enjoy her morning coffee without interruption <g> (even if she is hogging all the summer sunshine) I'm only guessing but I think that the Cape Breton Post may have changed its format, at least on line anyway. Copy and Paste is a wonderful tool and I'm sure none of us would want to add more work for Carol or others since its far easier for us to just skip over them. Having said that, I would strongly suggest you don't skip over them... they are far more valuable than maybe many of us realize. Many of these items (thanks & funeral announcements etc.) show up when an obituary had never been placed in a newspaper anywhere when the person died. They don't have much information but they do provide info that we otherwise would't have had. To place an obituary in the "Post" (or any newspaper) is a very expensive item for families who just don't see the point (as everyone who matters knows who they are anyway) or the cost when having to pay for a funeral etc. There are people who believe that the cost of posting a thank you notice is preferable rather than an obituary. Something to think about...... George, you are too funny! :) I think the correct expression is "Do not look a gift horse in the mouth." Thanks for making me smile, and not for the first time. Allene > "For God's sake let us not bite a gift horse in the ass" or whatever that > saying is/was. > > George
Thank you, Phil. I was about to suggest soething similar regarding the obituaries. I would leave out those Cards of Thanks and In Memoriams altogether. That's my opinion. George Sanborn Charlottetown

I have a critique regarding the Obit list that is so faithfully published by Carol [and her friends, when she's on holiday]. I've noticed lately that mixed in with the actual obituaries are 'In Memoriams' and 'Cards of Thanks'. While I am sure that these are worthwhile notices, looking at it from a strictly genealogical point of view, I feel that they are out of place in a list of Cape Breton deaths. Not wishing to engage in a flame war, however, I do have a suggestion: might it be possible to publish the Obits as they appear in the CB Post, followed by the In Memoriams and Cards of Thanks? In that way, those who are scanning the obits for possible relatives won't have the additional material to scan also. Just my opinion--everyone has one! regards, Phil Irons, Sydney, NS
