Cape Breton Post August 03, 2009 Age is no barrier to women's joy over music RANNIE GILLIS The Cape Breton Post Mary O' Handley, at the young age of 96, certainly did not remain motionless as she sat at a table at Rollie's Wharf in North Sydney. The occasion was the celebration of Brenda Stubbert's 50th birthday, and in response to the vibrant music provided by at least a dozen fiddlers, she was keeping time with both hands on the tabletop and both feet under the table. Her reason was simple. "I can't keep still when I hear good music!" I was quite taken with her, for not only was she jigging along, she was keeping perfect time with the various tunes, slowing down for the slow airs and marches, and speeding up for the various jigs and reels. And she had company at her table, another relative youngster by the name of Florence MacNeil, only 87 years old. Both were obviously having a wonderful time, and a constant stream of the older musicians came over to their table to speak to them. At one point the well known Boisdale pianist Janet Cameron went to their table, and motioned for me to come over. I was delighted, and on the way asked one of the friendly waitresses for a piece of paper and a pen, for I knew that I might get some good information. Mary O'Handley, born in Sydney Mines on Aug. 7, 1912, is known as "Mary Rannie", which I found very interesting. She married Rannie O'Handley, also from Sydney Mines, and lived in Barrachois for 75 years. She received her nickname because there was another Mary O'Handley who lived in the same area. For many years she operated a small store at the junction of the Long Island road, and the main highway over Barrachois Mountain. She and her husband raised two boys and three girls. Her best friend Florence MacNeil has a son Joe, who is one of the weekly fiddlers who perform year round at Rollie's traditional fiddle sessions. Her maiden name was Nolan, and her ancestors came from County Cork, Ireland, in the early 1800s. They settled in the Frenchvale-Ball's Creek area. In 1947 she married Dan MacNeil, from Sydney Mines, and a very young Janet Cameron played at her wedding in St. Mary's Church, Frenchvale. She told me that her mother was Margaret Gillis, from Gillis Lake, and her Gillis grandparents were from South West Margaree, which is close to where my Gillises come from. She is also related to Father Joe Gillis, originally from North Sydney, who is now parish priest at St. Mary's Church, Big Pond. She did not have enough information to say whether or not we were related. It was obvious that these two lovely ladies, while advanced in physical years, were still very young at heart. They both live in senior's apartments at the Northside Community Guest Home in North Sydney, and enjoy their independence as much as possible. When I left Rollie's that hot and humid evening it was close to midnight and they were both still going strong. Mary O'Handley will celebrate her 97th birthday in four days and Florence MacNeil will turn 88 on Nov. 29. What a wonderful example they set for those of us who still have our senior years to look forward to. May I take this opportunity to wish both of them a hale and hearty Happy Birthday, and I hope I will see them again at the weekly traditional music sessions. I would like to learn more about my gr gr gr grandfather, Ronald MacAulay, who was born in c1770 in Illery on the Isle of Baleshare near North Uist. He may have emigrated to Cape Breton after 1830. More information can be found on my website at: http://web.ncf.ca/as926/fmff.html Bob McVicar Prescott, Ontario
I am looking for information on DONALD MACLELLAN, who emigrated to Cape Breton with his brother, NEIL BAN MACLELLAN, and other relatives from North Uist,Scotland. They left Paible, North UIST on 24 August,1845 and arrived at Sydney,CBI. on/about 17 Sept.1845. I believe they emigrated on "THE NITH". Neil Ban settled in the Whycocomagh, CBI. area, but no record of DONALD following him to Whycocomagh, exists. Their brother, ARCHIBALD, also settled in the Whycocomagh area. I am not sure if ARCHIBALD came at the same time or not. In North Uist the family belonged to the Free Church. A cousin or aunt (not sure of relationship) SARAH MACLELLAN was married to JOHN FERGUSON who settled on the Brickyard Road, CB. Any help appreciated. Tks, Nelson

Two of my gr gr gr grandparents were named Allan MacDonald and Sarah MacPhail. In the 1820's they lived in Solas North Uist, emigrated to Cape Breton about 1830 and eventually settled on a farm at Hillside on the Mira River. Other members of Sarah's family may have settled in River Dennis. Until recently, I had thought that Allan's father was Red Archie MacDonald, most of whose family settled on Salt Mountain near Whycocomagh and that Sarah's parents were Donald MacPhail and Mary MacAskill who came from the Isle of Berneray and settled in River Dennis. I now know that Allan's father was named Roderick (presumably from North Uist) and that I don't know who Sarah's parents were although I think they were from North Uist or Berneray. More information can be found on my website at: http://web.ncf.ca/as926/fffm.html If anyone has incorporated the previous version of my family history into their files, I would appreciate if they made the appropriate corrections. Thank you for the information I will defiantly do the walk and see what if anything I can find :-) They were Fleming's from Victoria Rd and Dominique's, from Walker St. in the Whitney Pier area. I am pulling at strings here but you never know ! My grandfather was Peter Dominique apparently a very well known taxi driver for Briand's and played with Gib Whitney's band and others.. perhaps if there is someone on the list who knew him may have some stories to share which will shed some light on him in his earlier years ? which may lead to some other clues. Thanks for any information and your patience I know I have been asking a lot of questions lately :-) Peggy Peggy Dominique Accounting Administrator 613-592-5780 ext 5227 pdominique@kinaxis.com -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Podgursky [mailto:kpodgursky@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, July 30, 2009 3:58 PM To: Peggy Dominique Cc: NS-CAPE-BRETON@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NS-CB] Calvary cemetery Old Calvary Cemetery is at the corner of Church Street and Lingan Road in Whitney Pier. Seems that my earlier post came back to me. For some reason it was rejected. Apparently whatever happened has been corrected as my test message finally got through. Hi All; And a fine job was done by all to bring the book "MEMORIES" about. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in not only the local history of Whycocomagh, but interested in old stories from the past and what life was like, way back when. Though the book is about the local area, its reach is far and wide. The very first story in 'Memories' ..."The Water's Carriage Factory" immediately alerts one to ties to other communities. John C. Waters was from Pictou, N.S. and brought his family here. The 2nd story is about "Dr. M.G. MacLeod (1897-1947). Dr. MacLeod, hailed from New Haven, Victoria Co. His ancestral roots were with the early pioneers, the MacLeods, MacIntoshs, and Hellens of Cape North. The 3rd story, "The 7th Son of the 7th Son-Finley Smith". Finley's ancestral roots reach back to CAPTAIN DAVID SMITH, who came from Cape Cod, and settled in Port Hood. The 4th story, "Air Crash on Skye Mountain". This is a story from WWII, and the bomber that crash and exploded on Skye Mountain. The lone survivor was Fred Ball. He was not from the local area. The 5th story "Clara and Hattie" were home children, and their roots were in South Hampton, England. Other stories in the book include, "The Haunted House"; "Johnny Dubh"; "The Waltes Game"; "Second Sight of Allie MacLean"; "A True Family Tree"; "Malcolm Blue"; "The Forgotten Ledger"; "MacKeigan's Barbar Shop"; "Crop Failures of 1843"; "Early Wood Mills"; Sky Glen School Section 52"; "The Lewis Mountain Story"; "A Roseburn Picnic"; "An Earthquake"; "A Lasting Gift"; "The Heavenly Promise"; "Where there is a Will, There is a Way"; "Fire on Lewis Mountain"; "The Kennedy Brothers-Boat Builders"; "Early Schools"; "Brothers Meet Overseas"; "A Story of Forerunners"; "Horse Racing"; "Skye Glen"; and "Fires in Whycocomagh". What book would be complete without pictures? And "Memories" has many of them to enhance your vision of days gone by. This is the first attempt by the Whycocomagh and District Historical Society at publishing. Congradulations on a job well done. I've no doubt your future endeavours will be just as successful and look forward to reading more chronicling the history of Whycocomagh and Area. Old Calvary Cemetery is at the corner of Church Street and Lingan Road in Whitney Pier. I don't think there are recent burials here. New Calvary is a couple long blocks away, "up the hill" and located at the corner of Brooks Street and Gatracre Street. Still being used today. If you start at Holy Redeemer Church and head up the Hill from Victoria Raod, you should hit Old Calvary. Calvary Cemetery is also known as Holy Redeemer and St. Mary's Polish Cemeteries, since Holy Redeemer owns the Cemeteries and shares them with St. Mary's What were your great grandparents names?
