    3. Follow-up to August 17th, 2009: "Graveyard at Bailey's Point leaves a lot of questions to be answered" ******************************************************************************** Cape Breton Post August 24, 2009 Donkin residents probe mystery of unmarked graves By LeRoy Peach, When it became widely known that there was a gravesite at Bailey's Point near the cove at Schooner Pond, Donkin residents Robert MacDougall and Jimmy MacIsaac, with the assistance of Fortress Louisbourg and the Beaton Institute staff, undertook research to solve the mystery of the unmarked graves. For example, Robert was able to determine that his uncle James, now 83, and the nephew of Margaret MacLean, formerly of Dominion No. 6, who married the Alexander McDonald mentioned in the Davis archeological report, knew nothing of a graveyard at Bailey's Point. As we shall see, this information does not preclude a connection between the gravesite and the McDonalds. In their research, Robert MacDougall and Jimmy MacIsaac examined A.F. Church's maps containing names of settlers, businesses and churches between 1864 and 1877, some of the literature on early Baptists, as well as Reverend Richard Uniacke's Sketches of Cape Breton (1862-64). A.F. Church's map shows no one living at the Northern Head, where the gravesite is located, in the 1870s. However, Martha Bailey reports that an abandoned McDonald homestead southeast of her farm existed when she was a youth. Existing Baptist records reported a small congregation of 10 and a church building at Schooner Pond in 1856. However, Robert MacDougall discovered that for years the Schooner Pond church did not report to the Baptist Association and it was removed from the records in 1866. In his Sketches of Cape Breton, Richard Uniacke, who accompanied Anglican bishop Hibbert Binney on a confirmation tour along the coast from Louisbourg to Sydney in 1864, stated that on the bend of the Schooner Pond road toward Donkin there was "a small place of worship." Map-maker A.F. Church, who located churches on all his maps, listed it as Baptist. Therefore, Robert MacDougall asks in a letter to the Xstrata liaison committee: Did the Baptists have a graveyard down at Bailey's Point, less than a kilometer from the church? Jimmy MacIsaac wonders whether there was a graveyard attached to the church itself. Recently, in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, Robert MacDougall discovered these Schooner Pond deaths between 1871 and 1874: Charles Jones (1 year), Rachel Jones (12 days). Could this explain, he asks, the discovery by archeologists of two infants in one grave? Other deaths recorded are Donald Gillis (five years), Archibald McLean (4 years), Hugh McDonald (aged 50), Margaret McDonald (40), Michael Borden (74). The research of MacDougall and MacIsaac has spurred interest elsewhere. Carol MacLean of Vancouver, whose ancestors are the McDonalds and MacLeans, provided this information: There were four land grants issued to the McDonalds between 1858 and 1879. They owned practically the entire northern head from Bailey's farm to Cape Perce, overlooking Flint Island, and back again. The area is shaped like a thumb. As well, a Donald McDonald had two lots at Schooner Cove. Catherine MacPherson's lot in the southern portion of the northern head bordered on a lot owned by the McDonalds. If A.F. Church drew a map in the 1870s which did not indicate residents at the northern head, how many McDonalds actually lived there? And if the McDonalds did live there, did they bury members of their families in a private graveyard? This column has traveled largely on the periphery of a mystery. It is a mere outline of all the good work on history and genealogy done by others. LeRoy Peach lives in Port Morien and may be reached at leroy_peach@yahoo.ca. His column appears every week in the Cape Breton Post

When the family gets together, There?s one we do not see It fills our hearts with sadness, Thinking of how it used to be We talk about the old times, And though we smile the same It hurts deep inside us, When someone speaks your name So all we have are memories, From which we?ll never part God has you in his keeping, We have you in our hearts. Mom, Dad and Kayla ************************************************* Anna Paunins, Sydney Born in 07/11/1921 With profound sadness we announce that our dear mother, ?Nanny? and friend, Anna, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with COPD at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on August 20, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. On November 7, 1921, Anna was born in Vilani, Latvia and was one of nine children. Her youth was spent housecleaning, gardening, tending cows and horses, picking berries and mushrooms and she was most passionate about running everywhere. The Second World War found Anna in Germany, involved in an underground covert brigade where she heroically provided safety and escape to the Jewish people in peril. In 1946 she married her husband, Anton, settled in Germany and gave birth to Sylvia and John. She immigrated to Canada in 1951 with her family and made Sydney her home. Anna is now happily reunited with her husband, Anton; her grandson, Seamus Flynn, along with members of her immediate family and relatives. She is survived by daughters, Sylvia (Jimmy) Flynn, Three Fathom Harbour, Mary, Sydney; sons, John (Margaret), Cornhill, N.B., Leonard (Sandy), Meaghers Grant, Frank (Susan), Winnipeg and Tim (Katherine), Stittsville, ON; grandchildren, Angelina and Luke Flynn and Ashley Paunins. In her final months and throughout her life Anna?s spirit was filled with a profuse love for Jesus and we know that she is now at peace in the arms of her Saviour and Lord. Anna was an amazingly beautiful person with a deep love of life and believed with all her heart that we should love one another as Jesus loves us. So she spent her life loving her family, neighbours and all she met. She put love into action by being a faithful partner and friend to her husband, raising her children to have integrity and compassion, welcoming strangers and friends in her home, sharing what she grew in her garden with others and giving joy and comfort to others by placing their needs before her own. Anna was gifted with many talents. She had a special love for music and played the accordion, autoharp, piano and harmonica. Her wish was to be a music angel in Heaven. She spent her leisure time knitting and crocheting beautiful afghans and loved to give them away as gifts. She had a very creative spirit and loved to paint pictures which we will now treasure. She loved work so much that it was hard to get her to rest even when she was not well. Even in Anna?s toughest times during her struggle with COPD she never complained, kept her sense of humour and always had a smile on her face. She truly showed us what it means to be a hero and her spirit, life and love will be etched in our hearts forever. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, August 23, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A mass celebrating Anna?s life will be held at St. Joseph?s Church, Cabot Street on Monday, August 24 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. A reception will be held in the church following mass. ?Our precious one loved us and others so much and she will be so greatly missed. Rest in Blessed Peace, Anna. 1. Re: [NS-CB] ARBUCKLE, Niel / Neil - b. 1804 in Stornoway, Isle of lewis, Scotland
    2. Donald Maclean
    3. Hello, I cannot say whether or not your Neil was the son of the Rev William Arbuckle, but I can say something of the Rev William. He was the son of John Arbuckle and his wife Margaret MacAulay, daughter of Donald MacAulay, tacksman of Baleloch in North Uist. John, a Mason, from South Queensferry in Midlothian, had come to North Uist to build the Parish Church at Kilmuir - that would be c.1764 - and eventually acquired his father-in-law's lease of Baleloch. John is known to have still been alive in 1800. The Rev William also held the Baleloch tack at some point, possibly after 1815 which was when he became Minister in North Uist. Before that he had been an Assistant minister to Donald Munro in South Uist for about two years. As far as I can recall, he was a Missionary in Benbecula in the final years of the 18th century before obtaining a post in Stornaway at an annual salary of £70 on which, his father wrote, William would be able to support himself and his family without further assistance from friends. William was an educated man, holding the degree of MA, although I have no recollection of which University he attended. Among William's children was a son Murdo who became schoolmaster at Tigharry in North Uist. The person most likely to be able to give all the info you need ref the Arbuckles is a Blair MacAulay. Drop him a note at blair@jbmaca.com Regards Donald Maclean.

    1. [NS-CB] ARBUCKLE, Niel / Neil - b. 1804 in Stornoway, Isle of lewis, Scotland
    2. Lorraine Satchell
    3. Hello Everyone I have searched through the archives for this list and find that Bob McVicar is also looking for the same person but for different reasons. We would both appreciate any information possible that we can share. I have been following this ARBUCKLE family for 25+ years and it was always believed that Neil / Niel had died as an infant but now I believe the one that was teaching in Cape Breton is most likely my g-g-Uncle. So far, I do have a copy of the Parish Records in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis and it shows that Niel was born there August 1, 1804. He would not have stayed in Stornoway very long as by 1806 his family were back living in North Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland where 5 more of his bro & sis were born. Neil was the 4th child of 9 and all except Neil were born in North Uist. I now believe that Neil left North Uist before the 1841 census so I have been mislead that he died as there are no records of him on the island. I have copies of the 1861 - 1871 & 1881 census for Sydney, Cape Breton and they show Neil as a school teacher there and his wife is named Effie. His wife was also b. in Scotland but I do think they married in NS or PEI and her full 1st name could have been Euphemia. Neither Neil or Effie appear on the 1891 so probably both died between 1881 - 1891. Neil would have been abt age 77-87 and Effie abt age 75 - 85. If anyone can advise me where I may find any more info about Neil or Effie ARBUCKLE, such as marriage or death records or birth of any children, I would appreciate anything at all. Quite sure they were of the Presbyterian religion as Neil's parents were Rev. William ARBUCKLE and Flora (MacLeod) ARBUCKLE. Thank You Lorraine Ottawa, Ontario

    3. Hello list, I am researching Jessie Chapman who was adopted by a Nicholson family in Baddeck, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She was adopted by I believe John Nicholson and his sister Cassie Nicholson. Neither seem to have married. Is any one researching the Nicholson's? I have a document from the Municipality of Victoria, N. S., Office of Municipal Clerk. In it, it says that John has been duly appointed to serve and fill the office of Surveyor Highways for sub-section No. 9, Polling District No. 16 in said Municipality for the present year, which would have been 1898. Does any of this sound familiar in your family history. Is so please let me know as I am trying to find out who Jessie Chapman's parents were. I have found some of the family but am not able to find Jessie's birth record. She according to the info I do have was born in May, 1893, but on the 1901 census it is says 1891. Your help is greatly appreciated. Sharon

    1. [NS-CB] Graveyard at Bailey's Point leaves a lot of questions to be answered
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Folks, This story is about my grandmother MacLean, her grandfather & family, the McDonald's who at one point, owned the land in Schooner Pond, and therefore, is mostly likely who the unmarked graves are.... I have been in touch with LeRoy Peach, and pretty much the info I gave him, matches the info in the story from the current owners. They just didn't know who or how this MacLean lady was connected...but now they do...... Carol MacLean CBPost August 17, 2009 COLUMNISTS Last updated at 11:25 PM on 16/08/09 Graveyard at Bailey's Point leaves a lot of questions to be answered LEROY PEACH The Cape Breton Post Schooner Pond, near Donkin, was a noted mining area in the 19th century and a fishing station from the early 1900s to the 1940s. My uncles lived there in the summer and fished the area as early as 1915. In time, they were joined by the Bordens and the Greens. Schooner Pond became prominent again when Xstrata Coal acquired the existing Donkin Mine site for redevelopment in 2004. Within the context of that prominence and promise, the cove at Schooner Pond became interesting as well: Xstrata Coal learned that there was a graveyard near the boundary of the mine on the farm formerly owned by Ezra Bailey. The graveyard was situated on a jut of land known to fishermen as Bailey's Point. The Baileys, who had bought the farm around 1913 from a Mr. Baxter, were aware of the graveyard for years and Ezra Bailey's daughter, Martha, in 2009 was able to provide much useful information about the site. It was Xstrata's local community liaison committee which proposed that the bounds of the cemetery be delineated for interpretation and emphasis. Xstrata Coal agreed to hire Davis Archeological consultants of Halifax in May, 2009, to do an examination of the site. As we shall see, the project yielded valuable information. However, our knowledge of the burials there is still in its infancy. That's where Donkin natives Robert MacDougall and Jim MacIsaac come in. They've done very good research on the history of the area. In order to narrow down their research about the origin of the graveyard, they examined Samuel Holland's and A.F. Church's map-making, the early history of fishing, name changes in the area, census reports, church histories, and burial records from the latter part of the 19th century. They were spurred on in their research, of course, by the Davis delineation project and the recollections of Martha Bailey who lived on the Bailey farm until it was expropriated by DEVCO in the 1970s. On the basis of the Davis consultants' findings, including 14 grave shafts, as well as documentary and oral history, archeologists concluded that the burials likely dated from the mid-to-late 19th century and were probably related to a family burial ground. This view was strengthened by the fact that the earliest land grant was 1858. Martha Bailey was able to provide information that the graveyard pre-dated her father's purchase of the land, that graves were marked by four large stones and small stones and that some of the graves were surrounded by an ornamental metal fence which subsequently deteriorated. As well, she recalled a visit to the farm by a MacLean lady from Glace Bay, then in her 80s, who said that her relatives were buried at the site. Unfortunately, the lady died shortly after the interview. Much work therefore still needs to be done to identify the MacLean family supposedly connected to the site. Fifteen graves in all were found, five to eight of which contained the remains of children or young adults. One grave was shallow, possibly indicating a winter burial. Hand-hammered nails were found suggesting that they belonged to the early 1800s. However, these nails could still have been manufactured in the area at a later date. Nevertheless, although the graveyard remains a mystery, I shall summarize next week the ongoing research of Robert MacDougall and Jim MacIsaac. LeRoy Peach lives in Port Morien and may be reached at leroy_peach@yahoo.ca. His column appears every week in the Cape Breton Post

The tiny lakeside community of Orangedale, named after a Protestant fraternal order called the Orangemen, has one of the oldest surviving general stores on the island. G.H. Smith & Sons offer everything from food, to furniture, to automobile tires. Whenever we stop there on our motorcycles, the very friendly staff fill us in on the local news and we always enjoy a cold pop or a delicious ice cream. This village also has a fascinating "living" museum, which contains an exhibit that is the only one of its kind in Atlantic Canada. The Orangedale Station is the only remaining example of the 12 original Intercolonial Railway Stations built in Cape Breton between 1880 and 1900. In addition to providing shelter and services to the travelling public, the station was a busy shipping point for lumber, potatoes, Christmas trees, and fish and oysters from the Bras d'Or Lakes. Built in 1886 by local tradesmen, the Orangedale Station was built in the Railway Queen Anne-style, with squared timbers stacked one upon the other. When passenger rail service in Cape Breton came to an end in 1990, it seemed likely that the station would be demolished. However, a group of concerned locals formed the Orangedale Station Association and started on the long difficult process of trying to preserve this fascinating piece of their heritage. They were successful and the Orangedale Station is now a lovely little museum. The first floor contains the ticket office, waiting room with wood burning stove and freight shed. The second floor is rather unique. This is the only station left in Atlantic Canada where you will find the original station agent's living quarters, furnished as the family home it once was in the years before the First World War. As if all that were not enough, outside the station are four pieces of original rolling stock: a bright red caboose; a crew van; a box car that had been converted to a small craft shop; and a Russell snowplough. This latter item, which was attached to the front of a steam engine, was the size of a box car, with a primitive control room for two operators whose primary function was to operate the two wing plows. Fascinating! Returning to the junction on the outskirts of the village, you turn left and head for Valley Mills, only a short distance away. After a few miles the paved road suddenly turns into a well-maintained gravel road, that takes you across two single-lane iron bridges to a T junction. Turning left, you have another two miles of easy-going gravel, until you regain the pavement at Malagawatch (Mi'kmaq - a triangular piece of land). As you skirt the shore of Whycocomagh Bay, you pass through several picturesque little inlets and coves that provide a secure habitat for bald eagles, osprey, and many other types of waterfowl. Another few miles takes you to a lovely little eating establishment, hidden away just off the pavement. The Cape Breton Smokehouse & Restaurant, owned by a German family, offers waterfront dining, with superb seafood and various types of German cuisine. It makes a great stop. Two miles farther on you arrive at a mountain of marble and one of the most spectacular scenic views in the province of Nova Scotia. Next week: Marble Mountain and West Bay. 1. [NS-CB] Richmond County genealogy
    2. Russell & Lauralee Johnson
    3. I just returned from a ten day visit to the Isle of Berneray, North Uist and I have returned with some substantial genealogical information on the emigrants to Richmond County from Berneray in the 1840's, including their siblings and ancestors that remained in Scotland. Surnames include, MacKillop, Ferguson, Patterson, and others that settled in the Loch Lomond, Grand River, Fergusons Lake, St. Peters etc. area. I found that I am related to many of the descendants of these family, as well as about half of the current population on Berneray today. I also have many photos. If you have a connection to these families, contact me off list. I would also be interested in obtaining any historical/genealogy publications that deal with these families in Richmond County.
