Thanks to the several that wrote like: Wilf Morley wrote: > Hi Bob: > > I just looked up the 1861 Census for Kenneth Gillis. There wasn't > one Gillis in the census.> > Any other suggestions? In the US Census since 1790 have shown the age distribution of the family members to various extents.. Did the 1861 NS do this? Is there an illustration or transcript of the 1861 Census headings? Suggestion: In what other Cape Breton ports would ships with Scottish emigrants from Harris have landed in the 1841-1845 period: Sydney, Louisburg, other? I have not found any record of such a ship. I believe that Kenneth, Charles, Angus and the eldest son Alexander ( not in the family in 1871 ) were miners. Perhaps miners were classified as labourers in the 1861 Census. So I will appreciate a lookup in sub-districts that had mines and were near a port bob gillis
I will appreciate a lookup in the 1861 Lingan Census for the family of Kenneth Gillis. He would have been born in Scotland, with a wife and possibly 8 children. bob gillis

Simon Shaw. Born in Glace Bay, NS, Bill was the first son of Simon Shaw and Johanna Morrison. He attended St. Anne?s Catholic School, proceeding to St. Francis Xavier University (St. F.X.U.) at the age of 16, earning an Engineering Diploma and a Physics degree in 1945, and there meeting his life long love, Barbara. His studies at X were interrupted briefly in 1944 when he was accepted to the Armed Forces as a Lieutenant for the Pacific Theatre, stationed in Vernon, BC. After the Second World War, Bill studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed a PhD in Geoscience. In 1950, Bill and Barbara were married and spent their summer as newlyweds in Joggins, NS, where Bill worked for the Geological Survey of Canada in NS and then in Ottawa, ON, where his two elder children, Harry and Margaret, were born. He was later employed as a petroleum geoscientist for Standard Oil of California in Trinidad, South America, where his two middle children, Joanne and Bill Jr. were born. From Trinidad, Bill moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where Bill partnered with two geoscientists in the consulting firm of Rogers, Seglund and Shaw. With his partners, he pursued petroleum prospects in Louisiana, Texas and Latin America. In Southern Louisiana, two more children were born to the clan ? Elizabeth and Edie. In 1967, an offer by St. Francis Xavier University of a full professorship resulted in Bill and family returning to his much loved Nova Scotia. From 1968 to 1995, Bill inspired legions of student geoscientists and engineers who have ventured out into many regions of Canada and international posts. Concurrently, Bill invested his energy in several petroleum and natural resource projects in the Maritime Provinces. In the early 1980s, Bill directly served the people of Nova Scotia as Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, and as a consultant on the Royal Commission for Post-secondary Education. At the federal level, he served on the National Advisory Board on Science and Technology. In Antigonish, Bill served on the St. Martha?s Hospital Board, as president of the Antigonish Highland Society and more. He and other local ?thinkers? created a men?s group, the ?Romeo?s?,that met to discuss current local and world events. For many years, every Saturday morning, Bill and several dear friends, ?the Senate?, met to contemplate solutions to world issues. To his children, he was the consummate father ? a source of love, encouragement, and unfailing support; he was the anchor of his family. Bill had a deep passion for sailing, golfing and above all, his wife and partner of 59 years, Barbara. Throughout his life, he personified the spirit of his favorite credo, ?Desiderata?, going ?placidly amid the noise and the haste?, speaking his ?truth quietly and clearly?, and finally ?gracefully surrendering? to his leaving. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Mary Barbara (Palmer); his six children, Harry, BC; Margaret (Joseph Chernosky), Maine; Joanne (Louis Plazzer), BC; William (Sandra), Antigonish; Elizabeth (Brian MacGillivray), Antigonish; Edie (Michael Ewald), Halifax; his grandchildren: Adam, Joanna, Peter, Andrew, Luke, Mairi, Emma, Lauchlin and William; his sister, Camilla MacDonald, Glace Bay, and brother-in-law, Currie Palmer, London, Ontario. He was predeceased by his siblings, Clifford, Mildred and Blair. Visitation will be at MacIsaac Funeral Home on Monday, August 31 between 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at St. Francis Xavier University Chapel, Antigonish on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill?s memory can be made to the Dr. William S. Shaw Earth Science Scholarship created in Bill?s name for a student pursuing a degree in Earth Science at St. F. X. www.MacIsaacs.ca. Hello List, A relative of mine, Alexander MacLellan, married about 1842, Jessie _____, and they lived the rest of their lives at Big Ridge, Mira. They are buried in Riverview Cemetery, Marion Bridge. I have not found their marriage or any record indicating what Jessie's maiden name was. I presume her actual first name was Janet [Jessie being the nickname for that], but there is not a clue on any record I have found concerning either Alexander or Jessie, or any of their children, as to what her maiden surname was. Does anyone recognize this lady? Census records indicate that she was born in Nova Scotia about 1817, and she was of Scottish descent. The family were Presbyterian. Thanks for any suggestions. I have exhausted the vital statistics and the census, and I've been told that the Marion Bridge church records are incomplete and unlikely to help. Any other ideas welcome. George

We think of you daily But that is nothing new And will miss you until we meet again In Heaven- but until then Your Memory will never fade, Your Love Your Laughter and Your unquestionable Kindess Love Mom And Family ****************************************************** Hector 'Hec' MacNeil Born in 14/02/1913 at North Sydney , Nova Scotia , Canada A long and happy life came to a peaceful end, as Hector MacNeil, age 96, a former resident of North Sydney passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines, where he was a resident for past four years. Hec was born in North Sydney on February 14, 1913 the son of the late Roderick and Lucy (MacNeil) MacNeil. He was employed as a butcher by the British Canadian Cooperative Store in North Sydney before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, he returned to the British Canadian Cooperative as a manager, later working as meat manager at Rahey?s Supermarket in North Sydney until he retired. Hec?s life was marked by a love of his community and the people around him. Decades after his retirement, he could still remember his old customers from the Cooperative not by name, but by account number, those customers remembered him for his generosity and sharp wit. He was a tireless volunteer with Progressive Conservative Party. He also sat on several boards, including the Northside Harbourview Hospital Board of Directors, the Northside Hospital Foundation, and the Municipal Welfare Appeals Board. He was deeply committed to his volunteer work with Branch #19 of the Royal Canadian Legion, doing everything from sitting as a member of the executive committee to running the weekly bingo games. For these efforts, Hec was made a lifetime member of the Legion in 1989. He was also a proud member of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association. He was member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Summers were spent at his beloved cabin in Barrachois, where he entertained friends, played cards, and told tall tales. He also entertained his own kids, along with their friends and cousins. The kids adored ?Higgs? (as they called him) and in return, Higgs was an unlimited source of boat rides, practical jokes and bonfires. It will come as no surprise to those who knew Hec that his unflappable good humour and positive outlook sustained him until the end. Hec is survived by his son Leonard, Sydney and daughters Pauline (Tom) Taylor, Ross Ferry, and Laurnice (Roy) MacLeod, Dartmouth; his four grandchildren Lisa (Peter Kenyon) Taylor, Toronto, Jennifer (Daniel) Hood, Ian MacLeod and Kyle MacLeod, all of Dartmouth; three great-grandchildren Drew Rose and Ryan Hood, and Leo Kenyon, also surviving is his brother Danny (Joan) MacNeil, North Sydney, and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed. Hec was predeceased by his wife of 65 years Rose (Steele) MacNeil in 1999; by brothers, Joe and John MacNeil; sister, Mary MacNeil, and daughter-in-law, Marilyn MacNeil Visitation for Hec will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made the Canadian Cancer Society or the Veterans Comfort Fund at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines. Hi Kim: Since you and I have previously beaten this one to death in a private discussion, I feel no need to rehash it in public. However, you raised one new question I would like to answer, i.e., "When is the last time any Nova Scotia County GenWeb site put up new material? It is literally years behind in getting on line what could be published." I devoted all of about 15 seconds to discovering that at least one GENWEB site (the Cape Breton site) added new/updated material on 27 Jun 2009 and, knowing the people who run other GENWEB sites, I suspect they can beat that. :-) PS. Regardless of what problems GENWEB sites might or might not have, lack of computational resources and/or bandwidth would not appear to be among them. PPS. And do you really believe that genealogical societies can ever match the resources of Ancestry.com, i.e., available manpower, computational/storage resources, network bandwidth. and/or subscriber/contributor base? -----Bob H----- Kim Stevens wrote: > Excuse me, but not being publicly available, and not being publicly > available for free, are very different things. > > The CBHGA cemetery listings are very available to the public, for a very > reasonable membership fee. I was aware that the CBGHA has additional listings on their web site, but they can't be included in the index of Cape Breton Burials that we are building because they are not publicly available. At the moment, the Burial Index contains ~10,000 entries and is climbing rapidly. Barring identification of additional listings, those that will be included in the final index are: Alfred E. HelloList, Here is the complete obituary from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald - CLEMENTS, Wayne Gwendolph CLEMENTS, Wayne Gwendolph 79, (LCol Ret'd) OMM CD, passed away quietly August 20, 2009. Born September 23, 1929, in the small community of Waddens Cove, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Charles and Lillie Clements. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1950 as an AVN Technician. He soon received his commission and after 32 years of service retired in 1982 as a Lieutenant Colonel (LCol). After retirement he worked with IMP Aerospace for a number of years. In acknowledgement of his many accomplishments, he was presented with the Canadian Order of Military Merit by the Governor General of Canada, Edward Schreyer in 1981. He was very proud of his Cape Breton heritage and loved to tell stories of growing up on the family farm. Everyone's favorite stories were the ones that started with "I will tell you just how poor we were...". He loved his garden and sitting on the deck listening to music with a nice glass of wine. He was predeceased by and now reunited with Helen, his loving wife of 52 years. He was also predeceased by brothers, Freeman, Ellsworth, John, Delbert, Marvin and sister, Vera. He is survived by brother, Alonzo "Lonnie" and sister, Arlene. He is also survived by his daughters, Nancy, Sandra (Hal), Linda, Gail (Lance) and by his sons, Gordon (Karen), Gilbert, Alfred, Clifford; and by grandchildren, Matthew, Helen, Jamie, Daniel, Kenneth, Joshua, Iain, Sarah, Heather, Amy, Justin, Jonathan, and Cheyenne. A very special thanks to Dominic, Judy, Salina, Christopher and Taylor for their friendship and companionship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children or Canadian Cancer Society. Cremation has taken place. A service will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, with a reception to be held following the service. Online condolences may be made at: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com

Hello Would anyone know of a good book that has been written about Sydney, Cape Breton. Maybe one that might tell about schools and teachers back in 1850 - 1890. I am still looking for any info possible on Neil / Niel ARBUCKLE. Also, would anyone have or know of any listings or CD's of Marriages, Deaths or Burials at any Presbyterian Church in the Sydney area. Being as I cannot get to this area any ideas would be appreciated for items I can buy or sites, books, etc that I can research myself. Thank You Lorraine Ottawa, Ontario
I'm looking for a picture of the three small houses (now the site of the Faith Baptist Church) that were located next to the Hagell Block on Davenport Road in Sydney. A friend of mine Jim Rhymes lived in one of the houses as a child and would like to have a picture of them if there is one available.
