    1. [NS-CB] CBGHA MEETING 8 SEPT 09
    2. Norm Macdonald
    3. The next meeting of the CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION will be held 8 Sept 2009, 7:00 PM at the Lyceum, 225 George St, Sydney. The meetings are free and visitors are welcome. The presenter will be CBGHA member and author, Carole MacDonald, speaking about her recent book and related topics. Carole was born and raised in Glace Bay. She received her early education in Glace Bay. After finishing Mount St Vincent University she taught in the Dartmouth School system and eventually returned to school and earned a degree in journalism. She worked for about 20 years with the provincial government in public relations, policy development and volunteer support. Carole retired in 2003 and since then has concentrated on writing in a variety of media; articles, websites, brochures, and of course "Historic Glace Bay". BOOK REVIEWS Historic Glace Bay - Images of Our Past is a first-rate read. The main historical highlights of Glace Bay, once a prosperous town and the largest in Nova Scotia, are discussed in a concise narrative supplemented by excellent photos. The book covers many aspects of life in this mining town including information on the mines, where the people came from, politics, sports, entertainment and the strikes that were long and upsetting. Carole is to be congratulated on her fairness in explaining what life was like in glace Bay in its early years and who the driving forces were that made life interesting. The book is of special interest to anyone from Glace Bay or the surrounding area as well as persons whose ancestors lived in Glace Bay. Stephen MacPhee Mountain, ON Glace Bay history beyond mining Book chronicles past residents' bleak living conditions, strong women, famous people By ELIZABETH PATTERSON Mention Glace Bay and most people immediately conjure up a vision of a coal mining town full of tough and hardy souls. Carole MacDonald, the writer and researcher behind Images Of Our Past: Historic Glace Bay makes sure readers leave with a fuller idea of the town's people. MacDonald was born and raised in Glace Bay, later leaving for Halifax where she earned degrees in education and English at Mount Saint Vincent University and a journalism degree from the University of King's College, as well as working for the provincial government. She says she figured she had a good knowledge of the town from her family's connections and having grown up there. "That was until I started researching," she says, adding it took about three years to work on the book. During that time, she learned there was much more to Glace Bay than just mines. "I found such amazing, interesting people," she says, adding she was particularly impressed by the strong women who kept things going, even during the strikes and walkouts. Although the book contains the usual historic information, MacDonald also features profiles on several of the town's better known inhabitants, such as writer Hugh MacLennan, musician Marguerite MacDougall and war hero John Bernard Croak. But there are also stories about others not so well known outside of Glace Bay but who were and are an integral part of the community. Like other books in the Images Of Our Past series, this book features dozens of beautiful and evocative photographs, including a sketch that Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris did of a Glace Bay miner's wife holding a child, in front of bleak background. Harris did other paintings and a series of articles for the Toronto Star that described the unbelievably bad working conditions faced by the miners, alerting the rest of the country to the incredible poverty in the area. The book is filled with plenty of facts and photos that should be interesting to both Glace Bay residents and non-residents. There's even proof that Canada's present health care system really had its roots in Glace Bay. MacDonald delivers a volume that truly speaks volumes about the people of her hometown. Elizabeth Patterson is a musician, writer and broadcaster based in Sydney.

The Little White Church By Gertrude Reid There?s a little white church at the top of the hill Nestled amongst the pines. Where once was heard God?s Holy Word And where love and peace entwined. In summer surrounded by wild flowers In winter blanketed by snow. Creates a picturesque setting For the little church of long ago. It was built in the year 1837 By the early settlers of the land. To them it was a labor of love By strong and willing hands. You get a feeling of nostalgia Whenever you enter the door. You feel God?s Holy presence there, As in the days of yore. With its quiet and quaint surroundings Its unique pews, carved out by hand. We thank God for the work and dedication Of settlers to this land. Many of its members sleep in the churchyard Beneath the brow of the hill. Where the spirit of God forever lingers O?er a plot that is silent and still. Many folk have left its midst Leaving many fond memories behind, But taking with them fond recollections Of the little white church in the pines. May it stand like the rock of ages Steadfast, faithful and sincere. And may God bless and protect it Throughout its remaining years. An anniversary service is held in the church Each and every year. To pay tribute to the Scottish Settlers And the ones they held so dear. Many changes have taken place Throughout the realms of time, But standing steadfast as a memorial Is the little white church in the pines. *************************************************** Alfred Rohrbach Born at Birch Grove , Nova Scotia , Canada It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Walter Rohrbach age 72 of Glace Bay.
