Hi All: It looks like this didn't go through the first time, so . . . Version 1.1 of the Cape Breton County Burial Index is now available for download from the Cape Breton GENWEB site at http://www.capebretongenweb.com/Cemeteries/cemindx.html. This updated version fixes two problems in the original version 1.0: a. The alphabetically sorted worksheet was actually sorted geographically (OOPS!) b. A mental lapse by yours truly in the way a married woman was index ed when her maiden name, but not her given name, was known. I'm sure there are probably a few more glitches so, if you see one, please don't be backward about coming forward. :-) -----Bob H-----
Hi Nigel, http://lemac2.tripod.com/index-185.html This page may help. There are sections for which schools were where, and when. Ferry St. seems to be the street that connects Whitney Pier to Sydney. I would try asking the Beaton Institute, Holy Redeemer Church (They had a school at that time within walking distance) and Sydney Academy. Also the Sydney Library. One of those places should have an answer for you. Some time ago we were looking at the family of Alexander MacNeil (saor) of St. Rose. At that time there seemed to be a discrepancy about the number of sons and daughters. I thought seven daughters and three sons; Vince and others said that his will listed eight, but no Jane. I have since acquired a copy of the will from the courthouse in Port Hood (which they photocopied with no problem). The will literally counts the children as below (I have added spouses): >From the will of Alexander MacNeil, his children are as follows: First, ... my well beloved son Angus MacNeil... (Isabel MacFarlane) Secondly, ... my well and beloved son John MacNeil... Thirdly, ... my well and beloved daughter Mary Smith... (Hughie Smith) Fourthly, ... my well and beloved daughter Margaret Gillis... (Donald Gillis) Fifthly, ...my well and beloved daughter Catherine MacNeil... (John MacFarlane) Sixthly ... my well and beloved daughter Nancy MacNeil... (John Cameron) Seventhly, ...my well and beloved daughter Christian MacNeil... (Peter Smith) Eightly (sic) ...my well and beloved daughter Flora MacNeil... (Ranald MacDougall) Ninthly ...my well and beloved daughter Sally MacNeil... (John Collins) Tenthly ...my well and beloved daughter (here the paper was torn in the original, what exists appears to be Jea, which may have been Jean, but the missing daughter was Jane) (Donald Collins) Eleventhly ...my well and beloved daughter Elizabeth MacNeil... (Angus Kennedy) There is no mention of a third son, Alexander, but apparently it was not uncommon for younger sons to be omitted.... The will was written August 8, 1835 and probate was completed November 22, 1839. I believe Alexander was included in the 1838 census, so he probably died in 1839. The executors (plural) were named but only the name Dugald MacFarlane remains. -- Bill Nicholson Fraser Lake BC
I have been trying for sometime to find information on my deceased mother in law's adopted brother. I thought that trying Sydney school lists might be an answer and somebody suggested that all records are kept in Iona. Such is not the case and I was directed back to Sydney with a number and a name (Karen somebody). Several calls have not led me in a positive direction. (The first call gave me a man who obviously was hard of hearing, the second message call said nobody was present until 10 AM, and so it went because I didn't get through at 10:05!) So, if I come to Sydney, where are these records kept and are they readily accessible? The person involved was born in 1912 and lived in the area of Ferry St. Given date and location of home what school would be nearest? Religion was Protestant---that makes a difference if you are searching in Halifax, don't know if it affected Sydney the same way?) Cheers, Nigel Service, Williamswood,NS

We fondly remember Leona as the long ago playground tomboy and staunch defender of our clan, the teenage belle of the ball, a fiercely loyal mother, an accomplished school teacher and finally as Grandma Nonnie, whose penchant for mischief and unique brand of wit and wisdom delighted her nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Leona lived ardently and she brought the fun. When she stumbled, she rose gallantly. She met her final days with grace and dignity and, true to form, she left us smiling. Hello Colleen, Based on their address I believe you have mixed up two couples with the same names. There was a Daniel MacIsaac and Catherine MacNeil who married in 1904 at Giant's Lake (on the mainland of Nova Scotia) on 19 Jan 1904. Then there was the couple who lived at 774 George Street in Sydney. They were married in August of 1887 at St. Mary's Church in East Bay, CB, NS. The Catherine MacNeil of Giant's Lake was of Moidart origin and the other Catherine was of Barra descent. I believe you descend from this couple. Lynn Dziak was very kind to look up my ggf Kenneth Gillis in the 8161 Census in Victoria county, Polling District 10, Abstract 1 with 5 males and 5 females. he had 5 boys and 4 girls. Apparently the eldest son Alexander had left home by the 1861 Census. Alexandr was born Dec 1840 in the Parish of Harris, Scotland. I will appreciate a look up for an Alexander Gillis/Gillies in Victoria County. In the 1871 Census Kenneth and family were living in Lingan sub-district but Thom McCabe said there were no Gillis in Lingan in 1861. Alexander was living with a Christy Shaw, a "widow" dau of Angus and Mary Shaw. I have not found an Shaw that may have had a wife Christy who would be age 22-23 in 1861 from later records. Is there an Angus Shaw or any Shaw in the Lingan sub-district or in Victoria County with a female age 22-23. bob gillis ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

If they are copied in html from a web site, then most likely the html is stripped out of your messages and if there is nothing i the mesage it will not go to the list. it may have ended up in the List admin's pending but she may have sit set to automatically discard. This message I am replying to was sent in plain in text but many web based email programs have html as the default. I do not see any X-mailer info so I think you are using web mail. bob gillis

She was born in Bay du Nord, N.L., to 'Teacher' Tom and Frances (Lundrigan) on Oct. 28, 1928. She moved to Sydney in 1952 where she and her husband Lawrence 'Red' raised their seven children. Surviving are her children, Marguerite (late John) Pittman, Bernie (Margo), David (Margie), Lillian (Bruce) Andrews, Larry (Kim) and Maurice 'Moe'. Also by daughter-in-law, Janice. 'Nan' was cherished by her 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was anxiously awaiting the birth of her new great-grandson in North Carolina and her great-granddaughter in Ontario. She is survived by her sisters, Genevieve, Patricia (Pat) Hickey, Alice (late Fred) Hickey, brothers, Kevin (Late Lill) and Alphonsus (Viola), sisters-in-law, Teresa Farrell and Pearl Farrell. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, son, Adrian 'Sam' in 2008, brothers, Pat, Dave and Gerald. Our community has truly lost an icon. Eileen will be remembered for her endless kindness to anyone she met, as her front door had an 'open door' policy. It was known that Sunday dinners could feed from two to 10 persons easily. Friday mornings meant making 'home-made' bread and date squares, and you could count on going home with a care package of goodies after your visit. Her religious affirmations started many years ago with 'starching ' altar clothing, and her proudest moments were listening to Moe reading at Saturday evening mass. Mom's regular personal treats consisted of Pepsi pop, Double Bubble gum, playing Wednesday night bingo on TV and chocolate treats. Lady, the family dog, was her daily companion. Visitation for mom will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations in Eileen's memory may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund or Cape Breton Palliative Care Unit. Joey was born June 28, 1955 to the late Joseph and Mary Ellen Milley. Joey was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and neighbor. He lived all his years in New Waterford and devoted his entire life to his family. Joey was a hard worker and there was nothing he couldn't put his hand to. He worked as a coal miner for 21 years and, more recently, in Alberta for various periods of time. But the most important thing in Joey's life was his family, his commitment to his wife, Darlene, and to his pride and joy, his daughter, Kayla. They were first and foremost in his heart and mind until he drew his last breath. As the only one of the Milley children to remain in New Waterford, he was totally dedicated in recent years to the care of our mother who passed away in 2007. Joey will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews as a mentor who taught them many practical skills, covering everything from building and/or fixing things to how to catch the perfect size fish for the frying pan. He also had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who admired and respected him greatly. Joey was appreciated most especially by his neighbors who knew they could always count on him for any assistance great or small. Left to treasure his memory are his wife, Darlene (Mombourquette); daughter, Kayla; sisters, Joanne (Ron) Beaton, Port Hawkesbury, Linda (Ron) McKinnon, Toronto, Jeanette, Laurie (Dave), both of Halifax, Florence (Isabel), Loch Katrine, Marina (Ernie) MacKay, Halifax; brothers, Fred (Mary), Waverley, Steve (Tina), Weldon (Bev), both of Edmonton; aunts Rita Lauzon, Big Harbour, Zabina VanAdestine, Mississauga; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend and neighbor, Mary MacMillan.
