Thank you all for replying, this may be where the confusion came from, the family was catholic however the person I am looking into would have been excommunicated from the church by that time. It might be that Calvary was a Catholic Cemetery and Hardwood Hill was the Anglican Cemetery at the time. Some of my husband's family lived in Whitney Pier and went to St. Alban's Anglican Church in the Pier but they are buried at Hardwood Hill. Have a great day. Hello all, I am curious to know a bit more about the graves at Hardwood Hill. I have a relative who lived in Whitney Pier who is listed here, her markers are the same as another man who died 1 month before her however in my research I have never come across this name, is it possible that at one point the area could have been a mass plot ? Another curiosity is why would someone from the pier be buried up in Hardwood Hill back in the 40's when most others were laid to rest at Calvary. Kind Regards Peggy -----Original Message----- From: ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bob Hegerich Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 9:35 PM To: Cape Breton Mailing List Subject: [NS-CB] Cape Breton County Burial Index V2.0 Now Available Hi All: Version 2.0 of the Cape Breton County Burial Index is now available for download from the Cape Breton GENWEB site at http://www.capebretongenweb.com/Cemeteries/cemindx.html . This version adds over 12,000 cemetery records from Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney. As before, the Excel version of the file contains two worksheets--one sorted alphabetically (by surname and given name) and one sorted "geographically" (where possible). In the "geographical" worksheet, the Hardwood Hill records have been sorted by Range, Division, and Lot so that, assuming these are present and accurate, one can see who is buried with and/or next to whom. However, the following caveat prepared by the CBGHA bears repeating: "Some of the records used were prepared a number of years ago by the Beaton Institute. The CBGHA and the Hardwood Hill Cemetery advise that many of the older records, contain what could be considered incorrect information. Over the years many formats were used to record information and it is not always clear what the date shown really means. It can be the date of death, the date of burial or another date. One example could be if someone was to die in the winter, the burial date and the date of death could vary by several months. The newer records are more accurate." Our thanks to George Carabin and the volunteers at the Hardwood Hill Cemetery and the CBGHA for making the inclusion of these records possible. -----Bob H----- ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

SAFELY HOME "I am home in heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed. I am now at peace forever. Safely home in heaven at last. Did you wonder, I so calmly trod the valley off the shade? Oh! but Jesus' love illuminated every dark and fearful glade. And He came himself to meet me in that way so hard to tread. And with Jesus' arm to lean on Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, for I love you dearly still; Try to look beyond earth's shadows Pray to trust our father's will There is work still waiting for you, so you must not idly stand Do it now, while life remaineth, you shall rest in Jesus' land When that work is all completed, He will gently call you home Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh the joy to see you come!" Hi List I see from a recent E-mail John Johnson wrote a book on Birch Cove. It would be nice if someone would do some research on Catalone. The Morrison's notes provide a lot of information on the names of the original settlers in 1828, which I believe he wrote in the thirties. A lot has happened since then. Is there anyone who could take on the challenge? Have a nice day. Lauchie All outgoing messages are scanned for Virus using Norton AntiVirus 2009 Upgrade
Dear List.... Last week I met with fellow Birch Grove genealogist John Johnson from Sydney while he was visiting in Ottawa. John has just finished his book on Birch Grove, C.B. entitled "The Right Spirit", a History of Birch Grove and its People 1840-1940, from Cape Breton Newspapers and other sources (with personal notes by the author) and I was lucky enough to be able to buy a copy from him. It cost less than $30. I had nothing to do with the production of this book but I believe it would be of great interest to many on the list so I wanted to tell you about it. I hope that is OK. In it are over 30 mentions of my Nicholson family (Ewen (Hugh) Nicholson line) from sources that I would not have been able to access unless I spent years in the archives as John has done. Other listers who have links to Birch Grove will find the history of the little place fascinating. One thing I found out was that when the mines closed in the early 30s, one Nicholson was sitting on the company side of the table and his cousin was sitting on the miners' side of the table trying to get the best deal possible for the men. Must have made for interesting family discussions!! Anyway, the book is available through the Glace Bay Heritage Museum for those of you who are interested. I think John should be congratulated for his tenacity and determination in recording the history of Birch Grove for that pivotal 100 years.... Jane Nicholson Ottawa, ON

Her sunset came gently on October 29, 2009. Lizzy is survived by her children, Lucy Lirette, Sheila (Ronnie) MacLeod, Helen (John) MacNeil, Charlene (Blaine) Thomas, Fred (companion Peggy Metcalf). Also mourning her loss are eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; her sisters Christy Burke, Mary O?Brien, Isabelle Baker, and brother Fred ?Teddy? Gouthro. Lizzy will be missed by Anna Boutilier and John Nickelo who affectionately thought of her as their ?second mother?. She was predeceased by husband, Charlie; son-in-law, George Lirette and great-granddaughter Ariel Lirette. Predeceased as well by her parents, Nelly (nee Boutilier) and Joe Gouthro; three brothers and three sisters. Lizzy was a loving spouse for 39 years, and no child could wish for a better mother. Her way was to have each child believe that ?Mom liked me best?, but in her heart there were no favorites. She treated all her children with equal measures of love and respect. Although she raised her family during hard times, her kindness assured that no one who needed a meal went without, especially at Christmas when plates of turkey were always sent to any lonely person in the neighborhood. Even as the years took their toll, Lizzy kept her interests in cooking, baking and home decorating. Nothing delighted her more than adding to and rearranging her vast collection of silk flowers. Great fun for her was playing cards. Her reputation as a card-shark was well earned. Many a challenger sat with her over a crib board only to come away ?skunked? at the end of the game. She loved to win and when she won, her laughter was music to the ear. Mom left a poem that she recorded years ago. She wanted her children to know that ?when the time came? we should dry our tears and know that her spirit would always be with us. Lizzy?s family and friends will miss her greatly and will take comfort from the good memories. She is at peace with her Lord. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 03, 2009 from 2-4,7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Andrew Gillies is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. James Church, Gardiner Mines followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall, directly below the church. Online condolences to the Boutilier family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ***************************************************** Arlene Carew In loving memory of a dear wife and mother who passed away November 1,2000. Sammy was well known throughout Cape Breton and had many friends and acquaintances. He was born on Fletcher Street in Glace Bay on Dec. 29, 1916 - son of his late parents Dora and Abraham Mendleson. The family along with his six siblings later moved to Whitney Pier, where he spent much of his early years. As a youth and teenager Sammy always enjoyed and excelled in sports - particularly basketball and baseball. Throughout his life he always enjoyed singing and dancing - qualities he was proud of and that gained him many friends right up to the end of his life. He launched his business career as a young boy by delivering the Cape Breton Post door to door and was always proud of the fact that he had the biggest newspaper route in Whitney Pier (144 papers delivered every day!). After graduating from Sydney Academy in 1936 he got a job at a grocery store located in Ashby but later moved on to open his own grocery business on the Esplanade. He subsequently opened a new grocery store on Lower Charlotte Street and remained there for many years until he decided to move to Alexandra Street where he opened Sammy's Lucky Dollar grocery store. After retiring from the grocery business, he somewhat reluctantly decided to try his hand as a car salesman. Once again he put all his know-how, experience and determination to work and quickly became known to his many customers as "Smilin' Sam - The Pontiac Man!" Not only was Sammy considered successful but earned the coveted Grand Sales Master Award from General Motors on a number of occasions over his 25-year career in the car business. The plaque he received from General Motors carried the following inscription: "In recognition of exemplary initiative and achievement of the highest possible standards in automotive salesmanship." But Sammy's life was much more than about business. He was very attached to the Cape Breton Jewish community and served in a number of capacities of his synagogue - The Temple Sons of Israel. In recognition and appreciation of his many years of service a special donation was made by the synagogue to Hadassah-Wizo on the occasion of his 90th birthday. In addition, Sammy received a number of awards and certificates over the years from the Cape Breton Chapter of Hadassah-Wizo and in recognition of his "dedication and commitment to the Jewish Community" was later named as a "Male Life Associate" of this female organization. In addition, to his work in the Jewish community, Sammy was also an active and longtime member of the Sydney Lions Club. He served two consecutive terms as president and in June 1959 was honoured as the recipient of the "Lion of the Year" award. Later in 1993 Sammy was inducted into the "Quarter Century Club" for his 25 years of service. The Lions Club once again honoured Sammy with an "Outstanding Service" certificate in recognition for all the volunteer work he had undertaken on their behalf. But most of all, nearest and dearest to Sammy's heart was his family. He was always concerned for the well-being not only of his parents, but also for the well being of his brothers and sisters and took an active interest in their many endeavours. Sammy and his late wife Doris never had any children of their own, but both Sammy and Doris always displayed a close relationship with their many nieces and nephews showing pride for their accomplishments and concern for their challenges. Sammy was predeceased by his parents, Dora (Fine) Mendleson and Abraham Mendleson; his wife, Doris (Selick) Mendleson; his brothers, Louis and Jake; his sisters, Bessie Fried (Mendleson), Sophie Cohen (Mendleson), twin sister Sarah Agulnik (Mendleson); nieces, Phyllis (Bill) Leith (Cohen), Faye Gaum and nephew, Frank Mendleson. He is survived by his sister, Lena (Abe) Gaum (Mendleson), Ottawa; sister-in-law, Helen Selick, Saint John, N.B.; many nieces and nephews including nephews, Irwin (Joy) Mendleson, Halifax, Joel (Shelley) Cohen, Ottawa, Gerry (Sylvia) Mendleson, Halifax, Arnold (Elaine) Agulnik, Toronto, Alan Fried, New York, Avram (Rosalie) Selick, Newmarket, Ont., Barry (Ethelin) Agulnik, Ottawa, Leonard (Susan) Gaum, St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, Karen (Jack Shore) Agulnik, Toronto, and Harriet (David) Kornbluth (Mendleson), Mississauga; along with many grandnieces and grandnephews as well as several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. The family would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to many of Sammy's caregivers at Northwood Centre who always showed compassion, understanding and respect to Sammy . . . and we also wish to thank the many residents who have expressed their sadness at Sammy's passing. Funeral services will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney, N.S., on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at 3 p.m. and officiated by Rabbi David Ellis. Internment will follow immediately at the Hebrew Cemetery, Lingan Road, Whitney Pier. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sammy's memory to the charity of your choice. That day I had to leave you, when my life on earth was through,God picked me up and hugged me, and said I welcome you. Then God gave me a list of things, he wished for me to do, and foremost on that list of mine, is to watch and care for you. But do not be afraid to cry, it does relieve the pain, remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. When you are walking down the road and you've got me on your mind. I'm walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind, and when you feel the gentle breeze, or wind upon your face, that's me giving you a Great big hug, or just a soft embrace. And when it's time for you to go from that body to be free, remember you're not going, you are coming home to me. He worked in the forestry industry for most of his working life. When not at work in the woods he could usually be found either fishing or hunting or walking in the woods. Having been born and raised on a farm he also had a desire for farming, usually keeping some livestock and a thriving vegetable garden at his home in Margaree Forks. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family; spending evenings playing cards, telling stories and enjoying the company and entertainment of his grandchildren. After his retirement he was able to pursue his passions of salmon fishing and deer hunting, which he did with great enjoyment for many years. June is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy (MacDonald); daughter, Linda (Allan Andrews), Sydney River; son, Rick (Gail), Howie Centre; grandchildren, Amanda and Krista (Andrews) and Brooklyn, Sheridee and Neva (Etheridge); brothers, Fraser and Russell, both of Margaree Forks; and sister, Joyce (Don Crowell), Halifax. She had left her beloved home in Christmas Island four years ago after the death of her husband, Howard. That move quickened the advance of the Alzheimer?s disease that had set in less intensely some time earlier. Annie is survived by her sister, Cassie MacNeil, Massachusetts; all eight of her children and by all but one of her 15 grandchildren. Her children include, Michael, Toronto, Donald (Corina), Grande Prairie, Francis, Dartmouth, Kenzie (Casilda), Halifax, Billy (Sharon), Shenacadie, Donna MacKenzie (Gillis), Sydney, Margie MacLeod (Cyril), Coxheath, and Mary Lou Spence (Neil), Toronto. Her grandchildren are Sari MacKinnon, Faith and Kirk MacKinnon, Jeffrey and Caitlyn MacKinnon, Alec, Annie Mae and Neil MacKinnon, Meghan, Gillian and Liam MacKenzie, Colin, Sheena and Ian MacLeod, and Davis and Kristen Spence. Annie would be disappointed at missing the upcoming birth of her first great-grandchild. Annie was devoted to her family and her community where she was a member of the Ladies? Auxiliary and Clan MacNeil. But those were never exclusive categories for her. Her family could expand to include whomever she knew who could benefit from a kind word, a hot meal or a place to stay for a while. Her community generally included anyone she met, regardless of their circumstance; for she always assumed that everyone deserved her kindness and respect. She most enjoyed hosting a full, noisy house of family and friends, new and old. She was the daughter of the late Alex and Sarah (MacNeil) MacKenzie of Benacadie. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, of 58 years, sister, Mary MacMullin, and brothers, Johnnie, Donald, and Angus. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27 at St. Barra?s Church, Christmas Island, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 28 at St. Barra?s Church at 11 a.m., Rev. Paul Abbass officiating, with interment in St. Barra?s Cemetery. Donations may be made to Alzheimer?s Society of Nova Scotia. She spent her childhood years in St. John?s and at 16 met and fell in love with Frank Muise. Marg and Frank were married on February 1, 1942. Marg and Frank lived in Sydney River, N.S., St. John?s, Nfld., Malartic, PQ and eventually settled in Riondel, B.C. Marg passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2009, in Cranbrook at the F.W. Green Memorial home with her loving family by her side. Marg was an amazing mother, both to her own children and their friends and a loving and giving grandmother. She was known and loved for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humour. Being the recipient of excellent musical genes, Margaret certainly knew how to deliver a tune. Not being selfish with those genes, she allowed them to be passed down through at least two generations. She was completely addicted to Coronation Street, loved the Blue Jays and could often be found canning and preserving Frank?s homegrown produce during the commercial breaks. Marg was predeceased by her husband, Frank, son, John, beloved granddaughter, Celeste Edwards and siblings, Mary Codner and Tom Bennett. Has your paper trail run dry? Do you wonder if you'll ever conquer that seemingly insurmountable brick wall? If you answered in the affirmative to any of these questions, then you might benefit from genetic genealogy (DNA testing). Family Tree DNA, a Houston-based company has to date a total of 265,939 records in its database, involving 5,630 different surname projects. See http://www.familytreedna.com One of these is the MacPherson-McPherson DNA Project. We are looking for men to test their Y-DNA. Either men or women can additionally test their mtDNA, which traces the direct female line, but it won't provide information about their male MacPherson line. To date we have a total of 77 individuals either tested or being tested. I am from the Black River (Blackstone) MacPhersons (Inverness County, Cape Breton), and my brother was tested as part of this surname project in 2006, when only a few MacPhersons had been tested. As the database grows so too will the potential for a close match with another person. Indeed, the benefits of DNA testing aren't limited to obtaining close matches. I have learned a lot about my own line just by having my brother tested. For example, I was puzzled for years about what link, if any, we had to the Clan MacPherson chief's line. Comparing DNA results from that line with ours reveals that although we share a long-ago common ancestor, that common ancestor predates the formation of the chiefly line of Clan MacPherson by hundreds of years. In short, we are not descended from the Clan MacPherson chief's line. If you would like to learn more about the MacPherson-McPherson DNA Project, our website is at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=McPherson and you are very welcome to contact either the Administrator at the e-mail link posted there, or me at my e-mail address shown above. If you decide to be tested or to have a male relative tested, be sure you do it through the surname project. Ordering a test directly from FTDNA outside a surname project is more expensive. It is preferable when testing Y-DNA to purchase a test that is at least 37 markers. They do not receive any form of financial payment or any other incentive or reimbursement. The administrators of the project are members of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy.
