    3. Hi All, I was talking with a friend , and they asked me an interesting question and I wasn't sure what was the correct answer. Maybe someone else can answer or recommend some good books. I can remember reading about some DNA projects which could trace early migration routes / settlements across the continents. We were talking about who were the first to settle on what is now Scotland and where did they migrate from and how the settlement evolved . Thanks, Arlene _________________________________________________________________ Eligible CDN College & University students can upgrade to Windows 7 before Jan 3 for only $39.99. 2. Julie Cote
    3. I hope everyone knows by now that the Mormons are putting a lot of genealogy on line and it is on going continuously with the use of volunteers. If you go to the Family History Search web site you can go to the Search Records at the top of the web page and to "Records search pilot" and it will go to something all together different than the other Advance Search in the same drop down menu. When you get to the web page of Records Search Pilot you can do a search there or go to the bottom and click on "browse our record collection" and it will take you to the map of the world. You can go to any country and see how far they have progressed with your country. France has a lot of the Church records on line but you have to go through the church records page by page (if you know the church). You can do a quick go through to the time you want for each parish by clicking on the page arrow at the top quickly. Then you do not have to load and view each individual page. (All of the Quebec churches are on this way too.) Hope this helps someone out there. Julie Cote

    1. [NS-CB] New MacDonald family developments!
    2. lauren macdonald
    3. Yeah! A family member just sent me a hand written family genealogy done by a now deceased ancestor - It confirms some siblings I had figured out on my own (though never really had confidence in). Plus, gave me many more names - Unfortunately, I don't have any real data or dates and knowing how common these names are - may not help to list the info - but here goes... Alexander MacDonald of Gairloch, Scotland m. ? was Kepper of the guns and huntsman for the Duke of Edinburgh. had Murdoch (who remained in Scotland and was Kepper of the Crown jewles and of William Wallace's Sword) (Murdoch had: William, Alexander (went to New Zealand), Murdoch, John, Donald, Mary, Isabel, Annie, Helen, Sophia) Roderick John Duncan (my great great grandfather) Jessie Duncan was born circa 1799 and I believe arrived to Cape Breton with wife Anne MacLellan in 1831. They lived for sometime on what family says was land granted from the King on Boularderie (to whom I am not sure - also not sure which other siblings of Duncan's or Anne's came over. They had Alexander (who had John, William, Mary, Henry, Harriet, Austin, Lillie) Murdoch (who had Hannah, Tillie, Mamie(?) - all who died of TB - Roderick, Cahrles, Annie) John (who had Josie - John died young enough that "josie was raised by other family) Donald (died in infancy) Duncan (stonecutter - died at age 25) Donald (my great grandfather - moved to Mass, USA - married Janet Scott Anderson, had 12 kids) Roderick (had John, William, George, Mary) Margaret (married a McLeod) Mary - or May Ellen (married a MacDonald had Janet and Nena) (later married Capt John MacMillan, Uncle of Donald Baxter MacMillan - who was from Cape Breton) Isabella (married a McLeod - had Duncan, Annie, Dolly) Hopefully something here rings a bell for someone... 2. Maureen LeBlanc
    3. My grandmother "Annie Jane MacIsaac" from Guysburough County, married Gilbert LeBlanc and raised 7 children in Whitney Pier. She died following an eye operation in Montreal, on Dec. 23rd, 1943. But she was sent home to be buried She was Catholic. Could someone tell me what cemetary she would be buried in? Nobody knows her birthdate. She was 53 or 54 when she died. My grandfather was remarried so she is not buried with him - but maybe in the same cemetary. Sincerely, Maureen maureen.leblanc@gmail.com

His first wife was a Catherine MUNRO, she was buried in Cape Breton bef 1858. His second wife was Barbara McLEOD. Both Roderick and Barbara were passengers to NZ on the Breadalbane. Roderick was buried in Otago, but I have no dates for him, and a birth date for only one of the children, so that is not much help. The only other likelihood of a Roderick McKENZIE is one born Jul 1828 Cape Breton, died 1893 Waipu. He married Jane Fraser in 1861, Waipu. They had no children. The only information we have on him is that he was farming in Waipu prior to his death. So many of the Nova Scotian mariners did retire to the land. This Roderick could well be my "Late Captain R McKENZIE", but without any paper trail to his past history - who can tell?? > We are coming to visit Waipu this February....I am planning to try and get > together all my New Zealand genealogy by that time. Judging by the other elderly gentlemen on the page, his hair is probably 'reddish', very thick, and he has a thick 'fuzzy' beard. Googling for Waipu +R Mckenzie" brings up an article from the Waipu Northern Advocate 1893 where Mrs R McKenzie got a second place for her peach jam. B. How old did Capt R McKenzie look in the picture? What color was his hair or beard? C. Have you looked at the 'The romantic story of Waipu and sister settlements by N. R McKenzie (Unknown Binding - 1942)' D. Have you found the name of his wife, if any? REPLY TO THE LIST. bob gillis

    3. Having tried many other avenues here in NZ, I am wondering if any one on this list can help with the identification of a Captain R McKENZIE. The New Zealand Graphic magazine of 16 Mar 1903, featured a double page spread of photographs of sea captains, all associated with the Nova Scotian settlers of Waipu. One page featured 13 McKENZIE captains - one being the "Late Captain R McKENZIE". Shipping registers have been checked, NZ Archives, NZ Maritime Museum, and various other possibilities, but I cannot place a Captain R McKENZIE who would have been deceased by 1903. 3. Hello Anne... We have MacKenzies in our family tree who went to New Zealand. I wonder if you could try the R. as Roderick and see what the CB list can tell you? We are coming to visit Waipu this February....I am planning to try and get together all my New Zealand genealogy by that time. If you are at the museum, perhaps we will meet! It opened in 1882 when eight acres of land was purchased from the Parish of St. George in Sydney. This land was part of the Glebe lands granted to the Parish by King George III. The Cemetery is spread over fourteen acres of land and has over 14,000 graves and burial plots. Those from many denominations are buried here: Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican, and Catholic. It is still referred to as the "Church of England Cemetery" because of its early connection with St. George's Church _____________________________________________________ Calvary in Pier was generally considered a Catholic cemetery David Johnson -----Original Message----- From: ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peggy Dominique Sent: Wednesday, November 04, 2009 8:28 AM To: Cape Breton Mailing List Subject: Re: [NS-CB] Cape Breton County Burial Index V2.0 Now Available Hello all, I am curious to know a bit more about the graves at Hardwood Hill. I have a relative who lived in Whitney Pier who is listed here, her markers are the same as another man who died 1 month before her however in my research I have never come across this name, is it possible that at one point the area could have been a mass plot ? Another curiosity is why would someone from the pier be buried up in Hardwood Hill back in the 40's when most others were laid to rest at Calvary. This version adds over 12,000 cemetery records from Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney. As before, the Excel version of the file contains two worksheets--one sorted alphabetically (by surname and given name) and one sorted "geographically" (where possible). In the "geographical" worksheet, the Hardwood Hill records have been sorted by Range, Division, and Lot so that, assuming these are present and accurate, one can see who is buried with and/or next to whom. However, the following caveat prepared by the CBGHA bears repeating: "Some of the records used were prepared a number of years ago by the Beaton Institute. The CBGHA and the Hardwood Hill Cemetery advise that many of the older records, contain what could be considered incorrect information. Over the years many formats were used to record information and it is not always clear what the date shown really means. It can be the date of death, the date of burial or another date. One example could be if someone was to die in the winter, the burial date and the date of death could vary by several months. The newer records are more accurate." Our thanks to George Carabin and the volunteers at the Hardwood Hill Cemetery and the CBGHA for making the inclusion of these records possible. -----Bob H----- ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message No virus found in this incoming message. 3. Hi Peggy. It might be that Calvary was a Catholic Cemetery and Hardwood Hill was the Anglican Cemetery at the time.
