Lark - Thank you so much for this. You are right - your version is much better. I notice that George Wilkis is mentioned in the R.N.I Reg't. I believe that that was the Sydney garrison. If so, two other soldiers have a connection to me - Patrick Phalen and Benjamin Wadden, who married L'Angot sisters and settled in Port Morien. Ironically, both my great grandparents, Edward J Phalen, and his wife Sophie Reashore, can trace their roots to this regiment. Much appreciated - Ken --- On Sun, 11/22/09, Lark Szick <lark@seasidehighspeed.com> wrote: From: Lark Szick <lark@seasidehighspeed.com> Subject: Re: [NS-CB] Broderick family To: "Ken MacDonald" <macdonk103@yahoo.ca>, "Dallas McDonald" <MCDONAL3@DAL.CA> Cc: ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com Received: Sunday, November 22, 2009, 8:03 PM Hello Ken, you might like mine better. My great grandmother was also a Reashore (Richard), married to Edward Phalen of Port Morien. She, too, was named Sophie, and came from the Boulardarie area. Her mother was a Peck. I've often wondered what the Broderick connection was, and I'm very grateful to now know. I do have extensive information on the Richard family should anyone be interested. Born in Glace Bay, September 22, 1961, and raised in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Basil and Margaret (MacDonald) Nearing. Gregory is survived by his wife Diane Buckland; sons David and Thomas; daughter Sara (Jason) Hood and grand-daughter Avah Gray Hood; brother David (Paula) Nearing; sister Marion (Bill) Turner and nieces and nephew Amandah, Megan and Brandon. Gregory graduated from Reserve District High in 1979, Saint Francis Xavier University in 1982, and Dalhousie Law School in 1986. He was called to the bar of the Northwest Territories in 1987 and to the bar of Nunavut in 1999. He practiced criminal law and worked as a crown prosecutor and defense attorney. He also held the position of Executive Director of the Legal Services Board of the Northwest Territories for a number of years. He served as Treasurer and President of the Northwest Territories' Law Society prior to the Territories separation, President of the Nunavut Law Society and various positions with the Canadian Bar Association. By far the most significant position he held was not one with an official title - it was his unofficial role as mentor to young counsel. Gregory always took the time to assist young lawyers -whether it was on a particular file, helping them adjust to practicing law for a living, or helping them deal with personal issues. His genuine kindness towards all who knew him and unselfish compassion for those less fortunate than he, had no limit. His quick wit will also be sadly missed. Cremation has taken place. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at Saint Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines, Tuesday, November 24 at 1 p.m. with Father Robert McNeil officiating. Born in Scotchtown, he was the son of the late John and Eva (David) Kaifosh. David married twice. He separated from his first wife, Daisy (Butler) Kaifosh, mother of his three children, Fred, Deb and Sandra. He was predeceased by his second wife, widower Theresa (Scott) Moar. David's varied career had him working in a bank, a flower shop, driving a Coca-Cola delivery truck, serving thirteen years in the RCAF as a photographer, including a stint in Zweibrücken, West Germany, where he maintained and modified reconnaissance cameras used on the CF-104 Starfighter. After leaving the air force, he pursued work in the audio visual and printing industries until his retirement. After the death of Theresa, he returned to Scotchtown to keep an eye on his elderly mother, caring for her as long as he could. While in Scotchtown he was an active member of his parish. Like his father, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his children, David is survived by his sister, Elsie Nagy; three nephews Michael, Kenneth and Tim Nagy; two first cousins, Margaret (Kaifosh) Lewis and Helen (Kaifosh) Ilkanic; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, David and Brian Le Bel; Patrick and Carol Kaifosh; Erin, Emma and Ari Koivu as well as three great-grandchildren, Madison Goodall-Le Bel, Andrew and Lydia Rose LeBel. He is also survived by his aunt, Violet (David) Nodge and first cousin Mary (Nodge) Smith. David and his family suffered the ravages of Frontal Lobe Dementia, which insidiously, surreptitiously, and gradually, over the course of several years took him from us and gave back someone whose behavior was not the usual. David's message is that an older person behaving in odd ways may also be suffering similarly; be kind, be thoughtful, and above all, leave their mementos for the family. At David's request, a private visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for David will take place Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard with Father Paul MacNeil officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Port Hawkesbury. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. David's family thanks the staff of Victoria Haven, especially Marie, who displayed great patience with David, in the early and difficult stages of his illness. As well, the staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care who provided care in his final days, the staff at Seaview Manor who alerted us to his condition, the late Dr. Joseph Roach, Margie Turnbull, Lawrence MacDonald and many others who helped us deal with the difficulties of David's situation. Although you may not be named, your help, support and advice was always appreciated. To Basil R., Kenny, Basil Sr. and staff of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, we thank you for your guidance and support during our time of grief. A special thanks to Daisy, who visited him on his final day. ******************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgha.org

November 19, 2008 Like most kids our Dad was our first Hero He was larger than life with all the answers and the options! He provided well for his family We were never in need or want! For anything growing up We felt safe just knowing he was there He instilled in us the strong work ethic we have today As well as the importance of a well deserved vacation! His family was the most important thing in his life And although it was not said often enough He was proud of us as we were of him It is colder and lonelier here without him Like our Hero is not here to protect us Even though we know he is and always will be watching over us We miss him and we will carry him with us until we meet again. ?Be grateful everyday for the people and things in you life!?
