Mom?s family and her faith were the foundation of her life and her greatest joys were being surrounded by family and friends at every opportunity. Born in Sugar Loaf, Victoria County on March 25, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Effie (MacDonald) MacLellan. She was a devout member of St. Leonard?s parish, New Waterford. Helen will be remembered for her love of a good time and her lively step-dancing. She spoke the Gaelic language fluently and had a passion for Scottish music. Helen also enjoyed both ice skating and roller skating in earlier years. Among our fond memories were her baking of bonnack and biscuits, her games of tarabish, her devotion to her family and grandchildren, constantly tending to their needs and her many games of horseshoes in her younger years. Widowed at an early age, Helen travelled widely throughout the United States and Canada. She was a woman of strong faith and character. Helen is survived by sons, Paul, New Victoria, and Collie (Betty), River Ryan; daughter, Phemie Walzak, New Waterford; brother, George MacLellan, Taigh Na Mara; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by both her husbands, Collie MacKinnon and John Archie MacIsaac, daughters, Anna MacArthur, Florence MacNeil, sons, Duncan and Colin, in infancy. She was also predeceased by brothers, Alan, Gus, William, Johnny, Hector, sisters, Margaret, Flora, Mary Jane, Christina, and Cassie. There will be no visitation. He was Past Master of the Thistle Lodge #36 AF AM and a former member of Newsom United Church choir and a present member of St. Luke?s United Church and choir in Donkin. Hugh also was a member of the Legionnaires Mens Chorus, Glace Bay and he sat on the board of directors of both the Miner?s Museum and the Glace Bay General Hospital. Hello All, Anyone out there working on the Muise family with members who married into the Rambo /Rambeau/ Rambaud FAMILIES. Having a hard time finding info on the Rambeaus. I do know that Rambeau of Baralon who was Captain of the troops OF Canada, more than likely Louisbourg, was married to a Marie Catherine DeSable b. 1742 in Poitiers and she was receiving a pension of 600 French pounds at the time. Most other widows were getting 200 or 300 French Pounds if they were lucky. Vancouver Sun/Province December 04, 2009 Friday SISTER CARMELITA AGNES MACKENZIE MacKENZIE - SR. CARMELITA AGNES MACKENZIE, SSA (SR.MARY CARMINA) Born November 15, 1925 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, died November 30, 2009 at St. Ann's Residence in Victoria, B.C. She entered the Sisters of St. Ann in 1945 and pronounced her vows on March 19, 1947. Sr. Carmelita's ministry was primarily in the field of Education. Over a span of 40 years as teacher and/or principal she taught students from grades 1 - 12. This ministry brought her to many areas in the province of British Columbia. In Vancouver she taught at Little Flower Academy, Immaculate Conception, St. Anthony's in West Van.; Our Lady of Lourdes in Coquitlam; St. Peter's, New Westminster; St. Ann's New Westminster; Sacred Heart, Prince George; KIRS, Kamloops; St. St. James, Vernon; Kuper Island, St. Ann's, Duncan; Smith Memorial, Port Alberni; and in Victoria St. Patrick's and St. Andrew's schools. Summer Catechetical assignments included Nulato, Alaska. Sr. Carmelita served as community historian. The thesis title for her Masters of Education Degree from U.B.C. was, History of St. Ann's Academy, Vancouver, B.C. (1888 - 1913). Carmelita worked in the SSA archives making important contributions in preserving history. In 1989 Sister Carmelita taught English in the Sister of St. Ann bilingual school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Sister's love of music and her ability to play the organ served her well during her years of ministry and joy in her latter years. The second of 10 children born to Michael MacKenzie and Mary Agnes Pickup, she is survived by her brother Michael MacKenzie, her sister Eunice MacKenzie, sister-in-law Ellen Burns (Joseph), nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, friends and her own community of Sisters of St. Ann. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at St. Ann's Residence, 2474 Arbutus Road, Victoria, B.C. Born in Dominion, he was a son of the late Hugh and Annie (Petrie) O'Handley. Michael graduated from St. Anne's High School, Glace Bay. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a B.Ed., B.Sc. and M.A. in the Guidance Program. He was in the R.C.A.F. for five years. Michael held various teaching positions in both Nova Scotia and Newfoundland; Riverview High School, Mount Carmel, St. Agnes High School, Donkin-Morien High School, C.B.R.V. High School, C.F.B., Halifax. He was a guidance counselor in Burin, NL, and Canso Regional Vocational, Port Hawkesbury. Michael was also involved with hockey, while teaching at Donkin-Morien High School. Michael loved Cape Breton and no matter where he worked or travelled he always came home. He enjoyed the beach, walks on the boardwalk, taking pictures and in later years, working on his genealogy! 'on-line'. Carmel Church as well as a member of the New Waterford Army Navy Airforce Veterans Unit No. 217. He worked for 22 years at the Cavalier Tavern. He loved sports and was a die hard Detroit Red Wings and New York Yankees fan. Neil Joe was best known for maintaining the Knot. Neil Joe is survived by his brother, Danny Kennedy, Sydney and a special friend, Eckie Pezzarello. He was predeceased by both parents. Cremation has taken place. He was an active member of St. Mary?s Roman Catholic Church in Port Morien. He was well known for his quick wit, sense of humor and his ability to tell a story. Born in Amherst, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Beatrice (Amon) Downey. He was employed with Canadian Assemblies for 17 years. Then worked for Amherst Woodworkers/Premdor for over 30 years, until his retirement. He was an active member of the United Pentecostal Church. He also enjoyed volunteering at a local food bank in Halifax. Reg is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Mansfield) Downey, his son, Wayne (Loretta) Downey, River Hebert; daughter, Vicky (Tony) Hum, Amherst; stepchildren, Deborah (Lloyd) Crittenden, Sydney; Lorne (Kathy) Howell, Edmonton. Also survived by his grandchildren; Stephanie (Linton), Megan (Chris), Matthew and Shelby, step grandchildren; Chris, Mark, Kandie, he was known as Grampie Reg to Avery, Sarah, Virginia, Logan and Makayla. He passed away on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Mill Creek, Alex was the son of Edith (Jessome) Fraser Devoe and the late John Fraser. He was a member of St. Ann?s parish, Alder Point. Alex was a member of the Seafarer?s International Union until his retirement. His favourite pastime was fishing and time spent at the shore. You could usually find him on his many journeys from home to the wharf. He was a very quiet, humble man who enjoyed spending time in his garden and with his cat. Michael was born in Montreal to Ivan and Sophia (Yurkewych) Sholdra, and was raised in Sydney, Cape Breton, NS. He is survived by his sister, Anne (Bruce) Willis, New Glasgow, NS; nephew, Michael Willis, and nieces, Michelle (Willis) Stanley, Sandra Somers and Denise Somers; three great-nephews; and close friend, Mary (Landemeyer) Woo. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Saraphyna ?Sara? Somers in 2006. Michael worked at the steel plant in Sydney from 1951 to 1960, and was a retired employee of Canada Post in Vancouver and Winnipeg. He had a great sense of humour and had a wide circle of friends in Sydney and Winnipeg. Mike resided since June of this year at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. Mike maintained close ties with his family, and he will be dearly missed by his family. By Mike?s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Chronicle Herald - Friday 05 January 1990 - Page C5 - Hilda MacDonald dies at age 104 - MacDonald, Hilda Havergall - 104, Wolfville, died Thursday in Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, Wolfville. Born in Glendyer, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Annabel (Cameron) MacDonald. She received her nursing training at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in 1910. In 1914, she went overseas with 24 nurses and was awarded a Royal Red Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace. After the war, she returned to Canada and worked for four years in Saskatchewan before accepting a position with the Nova Scotia Teachers College, where she worked for 20 years. Many of her retirement years were spent in Wolfville and her summer cottage in Glendyer. The body has been cremated. A grave-side service will be held at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery, Glendyer.
