Born in North Sydney, Dec. 27, 1924, John was the son of the late Gerald and Elizabeth (Penny) Brennan. He attended St. Mary's University in Halifax, graduating with a BS degree, before enlisting in the war effort aboard HMCS Oshawa as a stoker and was present at the surrender of German submarine U889 off the coast of Newfoundland in the dying days of the Second World War. A man of vision with a passion for travel, he thereafter joined the family wholesale business as a salesman who toured the many rural shops and villages woven throughout Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, developing relationships along the way which outlast his lifetime. In the early 1960s he expanded the North Sydney Warehouse to become the Canadian agent for the French colonies of St. Peirre & Miquelon prompting the construction of the French wharf waterfront facilities and the establishment of Brennan's Travel Bureau & Agency. The last man to board the ferry before Newfoundland confederation, John had a flare for the dramatic as was later evidenced when he landed in Moscow as a tourism delegate along with the Canadian Press Corp. aboard Air Canada's inaugural flight to the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. He established Atlantic Cruise Lines with local investors and brought Scottish Cruise Ship MV St. Ninian to tour Atlantic Canada, 'The French Islands' and the waters of Bras d'Or. Encouraging friends to join him, he orchestrated numerous group expeditions to exotic destinations, sharing his passion and curiosity of foreign lands with clients worldwide. An avid sailor all his life he pioneered marketing Cape Breton as a world-class destination and was instrumental as commodore of the Northern Yacht Club in its successful bid to host the World Snipe Championships in 1979. Well known for his gregarious and generous qualities, his ongoing involvement in community service included the Northside Kinsmen, the Knights of Columbus and the Canadian Cancer Society where for years he headed the annual daffodil drive. John was a member of St. Joseph's Church, North Sydney. John is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Joan (MacLeod) Brennan; his brother, Gerald 'Bruz' (Jeannie); his sister, Celine (Jack) Hatherly; his six children, John (Helen), Jeannie (John), Tom, Terry (Marilee), Jim (Linda), Pat (Stephanie) and their mother Dorothy Brennan, his 11 grandchildren, Ishmael, Jude, Miriah, Brittany, Talia, Colin, Johnny, Alana, Cameron, Elise and Chloe; and also by his nieces and nephews. 3. 'Twas the night before Christmas at Rock-Away Rest 'Twas the night before Christmas at Rock-Away Rest, And all of us seniors were looking our best. Our glasses, how sparkly, our wrinkles, how merry; Our punch bowl held prune juice plus three drops of sherry. A bed sock was taped to each walker in hope, That Santa would bring us soft candy and soap. We surely were lucky to be there with friends, Secure in this residence and in our Depends. Our grandkids had sent us some Christmassy crafts, Like angels in snowsuits and penguins on rafts. The dental assistant had borrowed our teeth, And from them she'd crafted a holiday wreath. The bed pans, so shiny, all stood in a row, Reflecting our candle's magnificent glow. Our supper so festive -- the joy wouldn't stop -- Was creamy warm oatmeal with sprinkles on top. Our salad was Jell-O, so jiggly and great, Then puree of fruitcake was spooned on each plate. The social director then had us play games, Like "Where Are You Living?" and "What Are Your Names?" Old Grandfather Looper was feeling his oats, Proclaiming that reindeer were nothing but goats. Our resident wand'rer was tied to her chair, In hopes that at bedtime she still would be there. Security lights on the new fallen snow Made outdoors seem noon to the old folks below. Then out on the porch there arose quite a clatter (But we are so deaf that it just didn't matter). A strange little fellow flew in through the door, Then tripped on the sill and fell flat on the floor. 'Twas just our director, all togged out in red. He jiggled and chuckled and patted each head. We knew from the way that he strutted and jived Our social- security checks had arrived. We sang -- how we sang -- in our monotone croak, Till the clock tinkled out its soft eight-PM stroke. And soon we were snuggling deep in our beds. While nurses distributed nocturnal meds. And so ends our Christmas at Rock-Away Rest. A'fore long you'll be with us. We wish you the best.

You made me promise you three little things Before you grew your heavenly wings. The first was to take you home with me And that I did so happily. The Second was to hold you oh so tight Throughout the day and through the night. I held you close until you passed, The pain I felt will always last. The Third was not to let you go, So in the hospital I held you so. Now inspirit you will always be, But in my heart you're here with me. Oct. 23, 1971, I placed that ring, And made you mine. Our time together was meant to be, My husband and friend forever will be. We made those vows that made me whole, To love forever our only goal. And even today those vows I have kept, A million tears and more I have wept. Thirty seven years of married bliss, Off all these things Harold it's you I miss. So when I cry and when I weep, I'll dream of you when I'm asleep. Forever loved and deeply missed by wife Shirley. ************************************************* Girlene LeBlanc In loving memory of a dear wife, Girlena Grace LeBlanc who passed away Dec. 15, 2005. As well, the efforts of the Immaculate Conception Parish were very much appreciated, particularly the choir for the beautiful songs at the funeral, the C.W.L. for the wonderful lunch after the funeral, Adam Crosby and Jim Fogarty for assisting Father Boudreau, Elaine Haighway for her assistance; as well as, to the Men?s Club for the tribute at bingo. We would also like to say a special thank you to the McGillivray Funeral Home for the compassionate, caring assistance and patience that all of their staff demonstrated at all times. To the Royal Canadian Legion, our gratitude goes out for the impressive and touching Color Party Ceremony, the Last Post, the Honor Guard and the poppies which added something very special to the funeral service. The Legion was always near and dear to Angus? heart and he would have been very proud of the tribute shown to him. One of his other great loves was Scottish music, represented very well by Karen MacLean on the bagpipes, to whom, we are also most thankful. We are extremely grateful that before his death, Angus received compassionate care, respectful of his dignity at all times from the entire staff at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home and from the staff at Glace Bay Hospital, who cared for him; as well as, from Doctor Carol Boutilier, in whom Angus had and we continue to have trust and admiration. His death brought our family together in a way of which Angus would be most proud. To everyone who touched us in any way at this time, we say a great and heartfelt thank you. Although our hearts are broken it is with profound gratitude and thanksgiving that we return to God the soul of our beloved husband and father. Born in New Waterford on March 31, 1931, he was the eldest child of the late Anthony and Margaret (Young) Martin. July 31, 1951 was one of his happiest days when he married his life long love, Bernice (Bunny) Nicholson. He always said family was his greatest blessing and together his and mom?s lives were blessed with 14 children. Together we filled our home on Olive Street with an abundance of love, joy and laughter and you could always find dad and his faithful dog, Masie, in the middle of many a family reunion. Dad is survived by 12 of his children, Rick (Pauline), Tony (Suzanne), Sharon (Brian) MacDougall, Mary (Jim), Lorrie (Leroy) Hodder, Ronnie (Gail), Susie (Tim) Head, Margie Marsh, Wanda Doyle, Lynn (Derrick) Fitzgerald, Jamie (Heather), and his baby girl, Kelly. He was fondly known as poppy to his 38 grandchildren, Cara, Laura, Aaron, Meghan, Lauren, Kathie Ann, Chrissy, Marc, Angela, Shelley, Mallory, Valerie, Suzanne, Corey, Martin, Brittany, John Todd, Mitchell, Brendan, Paul, Joshua, Frances, Rachael, Bethany, Nicky, Nadine, Tim, Stephen, Stephanie, Savannah, Tony, Daniel, Artie, Samantha, Kaleigh, Connor, Hope and Destin. He was lovingly known as big poppy to his 10 great-grandchildren, Angus, Nailah, Malika, Hailey, Kristopher, Alex, Brittany, Madison, Nicole, and Callie. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Betty Baldwin, Doreen (Chris) Kelly, Mary Durham, Bernice (Mary Ann) Martin and his special little brother and friend Mikey (Janice). Also surviving him is his son-in-law Ash Jaffer and his sister-in-law Bette Martin and many special nieces and nephews, two of whom brought many moments of joy to him namely Carrie and Clarency (Cheryl). He is also survived by a very special family friend, Sharon (Burly). Our husband and father was a man of tremendous faith who believed in the goodness of mankind and as a result committed his life work to the service of others through his kinship with Bill W. He was a man of profound wisdom who was not only a mentor and confident to us his family but to many, many others (you know who you are). Hank spent 40 years of his life as a miner with the last 10 as the manager of Lingan Mine. He was also an active member of several mine rescue teams. After retirement he reluctantly took up the game of golf which became one of his greatest passions because it gave him another opportunity to embrace a whole new circle of friends. From the time dad was a young man he enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball and hockey. He was a lifelong faithful supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Go Leafs Go!) and locally you could always hear from Section 21, Row D, Seat 6 the heartfelt support of one the Screaming Eagles biggest fans. Although Hank?s life was filled with many rich blessings he lived with a deep sorrow over the death of two of his loving children David (April, 2002), and Judy (July, 2009). Both of these events left a tremendous emptiness in all of our lives. He was also predeceased by his brother, Willie (January, 2007); two sisters in infancy, Margaret and Bridget and by his in-laws, Stella (1986) and Rory (1974). Visitation will take place at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford on Saturday, Dec. 12 from 7?9 p.m. and Sunday, December 13 from 2?4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. A time of fellowship will follow at Saint Agnes Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. A private family committal service will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery. We sincerely thank the wonderful people of An Cala for their compassion and support and as an expression of sympathy we request a donation in dad?s memory to this very special worthwhile and necessary facility. Online condolences can be sent to www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ?God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.? Eternal rest grant unto him. Adelaide MacDonald, 101, slipped away peacefully Wednesday, December 9, 2009, leaving this life as she entered it, quietly and gracefully. Adelaide?s serene passing is a sorrowful loss to her family/relatives as well as her Harbourstone family at Mira Bay, (residents and staff), both respecting her as a unique, dignified human being. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late David and Bridgett (Peck) MacDonald; she was predeceased by a brother, Richard Anthony MacDonald. Adelaide was the last surviving member of her family and the eldest resident at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Kenwood Drive, where she was a resident for the last seven years. She held iconic status in both families. Adelaide?s working career spanning over 40 years saw her in such occupations as an operator with Maritime Tel & Tel in the early years, later moving on to Canada Post as an agent and finishing up her livelihood as a member of the Customer Service staff with the T. Eaton & Co. order office in Sydney Mines. In the quiet mild manner in which she lived out her life devoted to Church and family, Adelaide was a faithful member of the congregation of Immaculate Conception, Sydney Mines. She spent many years as an active member of the CWL in that parish as well as a member of their choir. The church would resound to her unique soprano pitch. She and her cousin Alice enjoyed their 45?s and bridge clubs. Her hours of needlepoint and crocheting were rewarded at the church fairs as popular sought after items; knitted items were reserved for family. She was an avid baseball fan keeping stats on her favorite team as well as the competition. The remainder of her time would be spent on challenging crossword puzzles and chryptoquotes keeping her mind keen and sharp her entire life. She attended and participated in her yearly evaluations and assessments up to and including earlier this year. Her generosity was demonstrated to local charities and church in her home town and volunteering was also a part of her earlier years. Her rosary was never out of reach and the exemplary Christian life she led was a major contributing factor to her longevity. She would attest to that fact often. Left to mourn are her cousins Mary, Gerard and Patsy Quirk, North Sydney, always referred to as her immediate family at her request, along with her extended family by proxy, the Mira Bay Staff, both provided her with tender, compassionate and loving care. There are also various cousins throughout the Maritime Provinces and Western Canada. At this time words cannot express our sincere gratitude to the staff that understood Adelaide?s spirited and feisty episodes as out of character and were handled with an unyielding level of professionalism and composure. However, they also recognized her private and reserved mannerisms and doted on them with the greatest respect as part of her unique personality. Adelaide?s reciprocal affectionate loving gestures were embraced by the staff and accepted fondly as rewards for their empathy and kindness. Their elation, reverence and appreciation toward this special lady were expressed in their tone when relating stories and events of the day. Our genuine, heartfelt appreciation is extended to all of you. Special thanks to Dr. Glen Gracie for his care through the years. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation will take place under the direction of Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A memorial mass and interment will take place at a later date. Madonna was born in New Waterford, N.S., the second of seven children to Henry and Margaret (Gillis) Howell. She was predeceased by her father, Henry Howell. She is survived by her husband, Alvin; daughters, Jeannine and Linda; mother, Margaret (Peggy) Howell; sisters, Beverly Morrison, Yvonne Madore, Patricia Alisch, Jacqueline Clarke and brothers, Frank and Joe Howell. Madonna attended Holy Angels High School in Sydney and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1972 with a senior diploma in education. She taught at several schools in the Sydney area and married Alvin in 1975. The couple resided in Baie Verte, Nfld., where she taught at St. Pius X Elementary School. In 1978, they moved to Elliot Lake, Ont., where both of their daughters, Jeannine Elize (1978) and Linda Marie (1981) were born and baptized at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Madonna decided to become a stay-at-home mom and raise her daughters. Madonna enjoyed exploring Ontario with her family and took every opportunity to return to Cape Breton to nurture her children?s roots and cement bonds with their extended family. When the family moved to Hampton, N.B., in 1985, Madonna became an active member of St. Alphonsis Catholic Parish choir and excelled as a cantor. She was also very active in the CWL. This period of her life also saw her run a play school from her home for self-fulfillment and to help with the family?s finances. Many an evening she was seen on one of her regular strolls along the Kennebacasis River Road, drinking in the beauty of the Hampton Marsh and greeting friends along the way. In the late 1990s Madonna began to feel the effects of the Alzheimer?s disease which would eventually claim her. In March 2001 she and Alvin moved to Fort McMurray, Alta., where the malady eventually progressed and necessitated her placement in continuing care at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. Despite the continuing onset of Alzheimer?s, she enjoyed day trips exploring Alberta, and a holiday to Victoria, B.C., which completed her desire to see both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada. Madonna never lost her love of music and could be heard at first singing familiar songs, then listening and enjoying local artists and church groups perform at the centre. To all those who provided moral and professional support, the family offers our sincere thanks. To the care-giving staff at the Northern Lights Centre, we cannot say enough. The respect with which she was treated as well as the affection afforded her was top-notch. Many times a caregiver would enter her room and terms such as ?m?love? or ?dearie? or ?darlin? would be freely used. Visitation for the late Madonna Gallant will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 12 with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating with reception to follow at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alberta & Northwest Territories chapter of the Alzheimer?s Association, the Alzheimer?s Association of Canada, Northern Lights Regional Health Centre Foundation, continuing care department or to charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of the Pier Community Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to info@pierfuneralhome.com. ******************************************* Sr. Patrice LaRusic, Antigonish Born at Bay St. Lawrence , Nova Scotia , Canada Sister Patrice LaRusic, 92, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, in the 73rd year of her religious life. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, on the day God called you home. ************************************************* Cecil Hurley In memory of Cecil Hurley March 25, 1926 - Dec 8, 2004 Those we love don't go away They walk beside us every day. Although we love you dearly, we could not make you stay. A Love so true to many, you helped many people in all aspects of life. It's been one year ago today since God called you home We thought we were prepared for you to go, but oh how wrong we were No one is ever prepared to lose a mom; without you we all feel so alone We think of you today and know that you are with loved ones. There is not a minute of the days that we don?t think of you. You death is the first sorrow we all dealt with alone, without your insight and help. Mamma, we are doing the best we can, relying on each other as you would want us to We miss you guidance, your understanding and most of all we your touch.
