    1. [NS-CB] Rev Archibald MacKinnon, Lake Ainslie MacKinnon's
    2. Kevin MacKinnon
    3. Curious if anyone knows the Rev. Archibald MacKinnon in the passage below. A Rev. A. D. McKinnon married my g-grandparents in Boston in 1901 (G-Grandparents are John A. MacKinnon (Cape Breton) and Minnie MacNeill (PEI)). Could be the same person? Might be related? Rev. Archibald MacKinnon was inducted into the pastoral charge of St. Matthews' Church, Inverness, N.S., on Tuesday evening, June 24th. There was a large congregation present, and a glad spirit characterised the whole service. Our church at Inverness is one of the best equipped in the province. The church and manse buildings would do credit to any of our largest cities. The Sunday School, under the able management of Mr. Henderson, and an aggressive staff of officers and teachers, is doing excellent work. The people throughout are faithful in their attendance upon all the services. Mr. MacKinnon is one of the Lake Ainslie boys, and in coming back from Boston, where he successfully labored for upwards of two years, has reversed the usual order in receiving and accepting a call from his own native county, and his own kith and kin. He begins work in Inverness under very favorable conditions, and good things will be looked for * Presbyterian Witness. Thanks! Kevin MacKinnon (Boston)

Cape Breton fiddler Dougie MacDonald was in the company of friends, family and great music just hours before he died Saturday in a motor-vehicle accident. ?He just came down to the Doryman to go some place for the afternoon and we got him up to play around 5 o?clock I guess, and had quite a few tunes and then he left,? said his cousin, well-known fiddler Howie MacDonald, who was one of several musicians taking part in an afternoon performance at the popular Cheticamp tavern when Dougie joined them on stage. A short time later, Dougie lost control of his sport-utility vehicle while driving southbound on the Cabot Trail. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation but police have stated that the vehicle left the road near Cap Le Moine, travelled down an embankment and landed in a creek. Dougie was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 41. ?Everybody is pretty much devastated. It was just very unexpected,? said Howie. ?He was a good guy. There was no harm in him. He was always very friendly.? Born in Queensville, Inverness Co., Dougie was surrounded by a family of fiddle players and picked up the bow himself at an early age. Over the years, he performed throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Scotland and Ireland. He composed more than 150 tunes, recorded three albums and published a book of his tunes. ?He was a really good composer and a good fiddler,? said Howie. Though work took him away from the island ? he was employed as a safety superintendent at a mine in the Northwest Territories ? Howie said his cousin played at home whenever he could, and often performed in the Celtic Colours International Festival. ?He was a regular performer (at Celtic Colours),? said festival artistic director Joella Foulds. ?It was always a challenge because he worked in the far north in the mining industry so we couldn?t always get him for all the dates we would have liked.? For example, this past fall, Dougie could only take part in one festival event ? the Jerry Holland tribute, a show of special importance for him as the two fiddlers had been close friends. But Foulds said she had spoken with Dougie just days ago and he had told her he planned to take in the entire nine-day festival in 2010 and was looking forward to some new musical collaborations. ?He was a beautiful player,? said Foulds. ?He was a very big guy with great big, massive hands and he could just make the most beautiful, exquisite sounds with the violin.? She also described him as ?brilliant composer,? noting his tunes have been recorded by a multitude of players. ?The really good fiddlers are always looking for something that?s new and different and (Dougie) was outside the box. His writing was brilliant,? she said. Dougie is survived by his wife Laureen and son Liam. Visitation will be held at the Inverness Funeral Home today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held in St. Margaret?s Church, Broad Cove at 11 a.m., Thursday. ljgrant@cbpost.com 30/12/09 ******************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgha.org

    1. [NS-CB] STORY - Nanny was the rock of our family - By Verna Murphy
    2. Cape Breton Post December 30, 2009 Nanny was the rock of our family Section: Our community By Verna Murphy, So far the holiday break is going by way too fast. As you read this, my inlaws are on their way back to Cape Breton. The visit felt a bit rushed this year, maybe because the weather was actually milder this time around and we were more willing to actually step outside the door. Last year when they were here, it did not go above -25. I found Fort McMurray much busier this Christmas break than last year, and I am not sure why because more people that we know actually went home to the East Coast. But there were more lines at the stores and more traffic than there was last year for sure. This week I found myself struggling about what to write about, for those that know me, you know it is a hard week anyway as it is the anniversary of my Nanny's death this week. This year marks five years since she died at the Inverness hospital, and although the heartache is not as painful as it was during the first few months, sometimes when I sit and think about her I will still have tears that pour just as quickly. She was my father's mother, and we grew up next to her down in Mabou harbour. She was the rock of the family and she was the one that brought all of the cousins and great-uncles and great-aunts and friends together at her house for many gatherings over the years. And when she lay sick that last month with the cancer that she had successfully fought off before, she again brought us all together as we surrounded her bed. She was the kind of Nanny that made molasses cookies and hot buttery rolls and she knit us all beautiful sweaters, mitts and vests (when they were the rage). She constantly had the grandchildren for sleepovers and most of us usually spent Sunday afternoons on her front lawn playing Red Rover or skating on the pond beside her house. When you were with her she had this wonderful ability to make you feel like you were the only person in the world that mattered. And I still miss her so much. I miss her voice, her advice, her ability to put everything in perspective and her kindness. When I was a kid I used to say that I could not imagine life without my Nanny, and I am sure she guided me along my way after her death to keep things in perspective. She always said the most important thing in the world was the kids. And life went on, but some things are still very bittersweet. I would love to see her grinning at a table during a wedding or beyond excited when a new grandchild was being born. A few of my cousins are pregnant right now and I will probably hear the news of the arrivals via Facebook instead of an excited call from Nanny. I guess if I could get one thing across this week it would be to call your Nanny, or your grandma or your mom and dad if you haven't talked to them lately and say I love you. Sometimes they know it, but I think everyone still loves to hear it unexpectedly sometimes. I love you Nanny, and I wish you were still with us today to see what we are all doing and I know you are with us but selfishly, I would like more. I hope you and yours have a wonderful week, and all the best in the New Year. Verna Murphy is a former resident of Port Hawkesbury. 3. Just before Christmas, I got a note from a third cousin in the US who all but pleaded with me to write up and publish the research that I have done over the last decade respecting the descendants of Charles Grant and Nancy Gordon, the family sometimes known as the "Point Edward Grants". Among the many other surnames involved are Musgrave, Moffatt, Rudderham, Munn, Ross, Woods, Boutilier, Peters, Logue, MacKay, Andrews, etc., etc. While I can't quite see my way to writing a book in the immediate future, I have decided, in the short run, to do the next best thing, namely, to make the nine files of research notes I have written up available on a blog. The first eight are already available in hard copy at the Beaton Institute; some people have already seen preliminary versions of the ninth (and longest) but I have incorporated new material into it up to this morning. I would therefore invite list subscribers and other interested parties to visit charlesgrantcb.blogspot.com As always, questions, corrections and comments are most welcome. Happy holidays, everyone! Our precious baby boy was taken far too soon. We know he is at peace with his loved ones waiting for him in Heaven. Drake will be forever missed by his parents, Lisa Margaret Durnford, Robert Scott (wife Paula) Farrell; sister, Darian Elizabeth Farrell, all of Ontario; maternal grandparents, Elizabeth (Nee Betty Acker) and Jabez Durnford, Port Caledonia; paternal grandmother, Barbara (Gould) Farrell, Auntie Carolyn (YoYo) Durnford, Uncle Darin and cousins, Ravin and Kendull; Uncle Jim and Aunt Marion Farrell; cousins, Brendon and Gregory, all of Ontario; as well as numerous great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins. Drake was a friend to all who knew him. He will be missed by so many people, including girlfriend, Larissa Lauzon and best friends, Taylor Eisses and Dillon Letemplier. Drake was predeceased by paternal grandfather George James Farrell. Drake was born and raised for most of his young years in Ontario (Scarborough, Whitby, and Angus). He was a pleasant, intent boy who followed his dad around with a toy hammer trying to mimic the excellent craftsmanship. He was his mother's 'little man' and to his Nana and Pop he was the moon and the stars. Drake and his sister Darian were very close and would taunt each other whenever they had the opportunity. Drake and his grandparents moved to Cape Breton during his teenage years. Whenever he had the chance he would say how much he loved living there. His love of Lego and video games followed him into his young adulthood. Drake was also a talented sketch artist thanks to time spent with his "Uncle Bear". He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his great uncle in rural Cape Breton. He was a student at Memorial High School and worked at Stream during the summer of 2009. He loved hanging out with his friends. To all who have been blessed with knowing Drake he was a funny, happy prankster who loved to joke and make others laugh. His confident, pleasant demeanor immediately put others around him at ease. On his Facebook page Drake had written a line that defined him best, "I know I am saying too much but I am the happiest guy in the world". Family Flowers only please. A donation to any of Drake's favorite causes, some of which included, Glace Bay Food Bank or Harvest House, Glace Bay, may be made in his memory. 1. [NS-CB] My Christmas List - ARBUCKLE Neil
    2. Lorraine Satchell
    3. Hello What I would really like for Christmas more than anything is to prove that Neil ARBUCKLE did not die as an infant. Neil was born August 1, 1804 in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. I believe he did follow his brother John to PEI and either married Effy (Euphemia) ?????? in PEI or Nova Scotia. There is a Neil and Effy Arbuckle on the census and the age is about right and he was likely a school teacher as the census says. 1861 census he is listed in Cape Breton, Poll Dist 5, Abstract 2 1871 census he is listed in Cape Breton, Sydney, Div 2 1881 census he is listed in Cape Breton, Sydney, Dist 6, Sub-Dist P By 1881, Neil is age 76 and Effy age 74 but no sign of either on of them in the 1891 census. I gave tried https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ResultsPage.aspx and have also joined the CBGHA but no sign of him on any of these sites. Would some wonderful, Santa Claus, Father Christmas or Pere Noel or Mrs. Claus etc., have any idea where I may look for the deaths of Neil and Effy Arbuckle between 1881 - 1891. Merry Christmas to All Lorraine Ottawa, Ontario

Christmas was Jamie-Lee's most favorite time of year. Her personality shone through with much love to everyone around her. We certainly have seen how one human being can touch so many hearts. The donations given to the Manitouwadge General Hospital, in her memory, have been phenomenal. They are still being received, and for that, we thank you! Below is a poem, given to us, in hopes of finding some comfort through this holiday season. We wish to share it with love and our most sincere thanks, Gary, Mary-Ann and Michael Hoban My First Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear But the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas Choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart But I am not so far away, we really aren't apart. So be happy for me, dear ones, you know I hold you dear And be glad I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I sent you each a memory of my undying love. After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do For I can't count the blessings or love he has for each of you. So have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and wipe away that tear Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. Irene was the youngest and last surviving member of a family of 14 born to Joseph Bernard Gouthreau and Mary Sophia White on Thursday, Jan. 29, 1920. She was born and raised in the family home built by her father in the late 1800s and it was there she raised her own 11 children. Mom left us many great legacies but her greatest by far was her love of God, prayer and the church. She was a devote Catholic who consistently practised her faith in all aspects of her life. Mom was involved in her church, St. Joseph parish, as part of the funeral choir team, funeral reception team and as a weekday lector. She took in all church functions and loved to be with friends and family where celebrating life was her greatest pleasure. Mom had a great spirit of adventure and loved to travel. Her adventures took her to Scotland and to the Holy Land where she floated in the Dead Sea. She also made many trips to Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to visit her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She travelled to Rhode Island many times where she visited with her two special nieces, Moria Libby and Mickey McGovern. At 89 years of age, mom could be found bowling and playing darts once a week and cribbage three times a week. Before getting married, mom worked as a nurse in the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in North Sydney, and although she did not return to work after the birth of her first child, mom continually practised her nursing skills looking after both her mother and father before they died, her children and many of the neighbour?s children when little injuries occurred. Missing mom today are her children, Vincent, (Mary), Ian (Lori), Jimmy (Michelle), Ray, all of Alberta, Gilbert (Lori), Saskatchewan, Therese (Henry), Marion (Bob), both of Manitoba, Larry (Debbie), Irene (John), Estelle (Byron), all of North Sydney; special daughter-in-law, Debbie, Saskatchewan; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered by the Dinaut children and their families, special niece, Yvonne Gouthreau and friend, Sheligha Drews, Patsy Clarke and family, brother-in-law, Archie MacKinnon (Nora) and his family, sister-in-law, Stacia Tobin and her family, the MacDonald family, and sister-in-law, Cecilia Goora (Edmund) and family. Also missing mom are her godchildren Frank Garnier, Robbie MacDonald and Adrienne Penny, longtime neighbour, Lonnie Garnier and family, and of course the many friends she made through church, bowling, darts and cribbage. Mom was predeceased by her best friend and soulmate, Ray MacKinnon (1994) and a beloved son, Anthony (1974). Mom you may not be here in person but you will always be in our hearts. Visitation will be held Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
