    1. [NS-CB] The Price of Coal
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Greetings to the list, I was looking on the net for some videos, when I came across this one. With the history in Cape Breton being deeply rooted in coal for many years, this song really touches the spot. Although the song is not speaking to Cape Breton Coal Miners, it can be deeply identified with the lives of the men who worked in the deeps of Cape Breton and around the world. Here is the url to view and the lyrics to follow along. Now I could not find the lyrics online, so I did a lot of stop and go to get all the lines. There are three one word spots that I had difficulty making the word out. This song is a big tribute to the men of the deeps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV9px05ugp0 The Price of Coal written by Johnny Caesar sung by Paul Child - Welsh singer National Colliery, Wattstown, Glamorgan, 1905 - 119 Hulton Colliery, Lancashire, 1910 - 344 Whitehaven, Cumberland, 1910 - 136 Cady Maine, Yorkshire, 1912 - 88 Sengenydd, South Wales, 1913 - 439 Gressford Colliery, North Wales, 1934 - More than 250 Cambrian, Clydach, Lewis Merthyr, and many many more... Have you seen, have you seen the Price of Coal It is much too high. Have you seen, have you seen the Price paid for Coal It will make you cry, when you realize. From Sengenydd down that deep down mine More than 400 times To everywhere in 62, when the whole world cried On the mountain side, a generation died And they all paid, they all paid the real Price of Coal It was too high. God Bless them, God Bless them, And God rest their souls It will make you cry, when you realize. The brothers and others, the fathers and sons Beside in the darkness, under confines at times He knows everyone, he knows everyone. And the yet the real price, the real price they paid for coal It was too high, that they should die Thats the Price of Coal.

    2. bill nicholson
    3. Hi All Does anyone on the list have a definitive answer to what has happened with the Antigonish parish records. After spending much time transcribing. it has now been six months since they were 'completed'. When I volunteered the word was that they would be posted at the pilot.familysearch.... site, but so far nothing. This seems to be a good way to discourage volunteers. -- Bill Nicholson Fraser Lake BC

    1. [NS-CB] William FADER 1799 - 1881
    2. Bob Hegerich
    3. Hi All: Here's a question for anyone with knowledge of the FADER's of Victoria County, if I may. A William FADER, reported to be age 93, dies at Englishtown on 28 Oct 1878 [Presbyterian Witness--Thanks, Jean]. We know from the 1871 Census that there are two FADER's living in Victoria County who appear old enough to be the man in the death record: 1. William FADER, age 72. Per the death records of what appear to be two of his children, he was born Lunenburg County. In the 1871 Census, he is living in the Englishtown subdistrict. 2. John FADER, age 101. In 1871 he is living in the Monro's Point and St. Ann's sub-district with a family named McLean; also living there a Roderick FADER and a Catherine FADER (who could be either a wife or daughter), plus an Augustus FADER age 14, b. NS. The Census states that John, Catherine, and Roderick were born Scotland, but that Augustus ethnicity is Dutch! On the basis of the name of the person in the death record, as well as who is living where, my first guess would be that it is William (#1. above) who d. in 1878. So my question is--does anyone know of a will, land records, or other documents/evidence which might shed further light on these two people. -----Bob H-----

When I come to the end of the road, And the sun is set for me. I want no rites in a gloom-filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that once we shared. Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must make, And each must go alone, It's all part of the Master's plan. A step on the road to home. So when you are lonely and sick of heart, Go to the friends we know, and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. 1. [NS-CB] A Cape Bretoner performing at Skate A Dream - A Tribute to Rob McCall
    2. Carol MacLean
    3. Greetings to the list, One of three of the best tv performances I have seen by this songstress, has just arrived on youtube. The other two, are the two Canada Day performances, Vancouver 1991 & Ottawa 1992. Folks, I have seen lots of shows & concerts of Rita MacNeil over the many years I have followed her, but these three performances are the best of the best.. I have many of of the shows & interviews on video, but the one I have not seen, I understand was grand, was O Canada from the 1993 World Series. Would anyone happen to have taped that World Series where Rita performed or know how I can find a copy. Out here in Vancouver, American sportscasters wanted all the airtime right up til game time, so we never got to hear or see the anthems that night. But I understand folks in the Toronto area did get to see this performance on tv. I think Rita was pretty wowed by the time she started to sing this song in the video. Just watch her eyes and smile as she was about to start. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alBfjkT23bM Carol

John's funeral mass at Mount Carmel Church was a wonderful celebration of his life with bagpipe music by John Grant, fiddle and keyboard music by Jennifer Roland and Jason Kempt, and of course the beautiful Mount Carmel choir. The prayers and words of tribute by Fr. Doug MacDonald and the participation of concelebrants of the mass Fr. Gerry Currie, and John's brother, Fr. Doug MacIntyre made the mass a moving and special ceremony for the family. For a number of years John was cared for Cape Breton Home Care and the family want to say thanks, particularly to his special friends Ray Doucet and Jim King. A heartfelt thank you to the staff and especially the ICU nurses and doctors of the C.B. Regional and Glace Bay General Hospitals. Thank you to Dr. Rose MacKay who provided John's initial care and Dr. Kevin MacNeil who cared for John with compassion until his passing. A sincere thanks to MacLellan Brothers funeral home for their caring and kindness in helping the family honour John with love and respect. There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, and of unspeakable love. - Washington Irving ****************************************************** Murdock MacKay Murdock Kenton (Junior) MacKay passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
