Exilda ‘Dodie’ MacKenzie Born Sept. 28, 1925 Died Nov. 13, 2014 We the children of the late Bob and Exilda (Coulet) MacKenzie announce that Mom, affectionately known as ‘Dodie’, is finally at rest after a long, painful battle with dementia. Mom and Dad married in Westville, N.S., after the Second World War and moved to North Sydney for work with the CN, enabling us to be born and raised as Cape Bretoners, for which we are truly grateful. Mom, widowed at a young age, taught us by example what is most important in life — family. Gentleness, unconditional love, acceptance, endless ability to forgive and forget, never a bad word about anybody — all so much part of this lovely lady. Mom laughed often, happily sitting on the sidelines letting other people take centre stage, while she smiled in her own sweet way. Mom would tell you that she was happiest when raising her children and later watching her grandchildren. As we all aged, Mom became more active in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19 Ladies Auxiliary, learned to throw a mean dart, and joined the Senior Day Program. She was a devout Catholic, attending mass regularly at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church until her health failed. Mom enjoyed life’s simple pleasures — walking, rocking in her garden swing in the shade, picking blueberries, knitting, sewing, watching movies, and dancing which she did whenever she had the chance. Mom said that if she had to choose between a final meal or a dance, she’d pick the dance. Along with Dad, Mom was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Corrine, brothers Joe, Paul, John, and sisters, Elizabeth, Mary. Mom is survived by her sons, Steve (Elsie), Rob; daughters, Paula (Paul) Druhan, Sylvia (Greg) Dearing, Agnes (Austin) Hull; her 13 grandchildren, Anthony, Dawn, Tim, Jeff, Brent, Shamus, Elliott, Nicole, Mathew, Jeff, Cory, Sheri, Mike and 17 great-grandchildren; her sister Clara (Kie) Teed; sisters-in-law, Sadie Coulet, Murdena MacGillivary and Marie Belland; numerous nieces and nephews (special mention - Alex and Evelyn). As Mom’s health deteriorated more people came into her life and ours. First off, we want to thank Dr. Langley and later, Dr. Ferguson, for the excellent and caring medical treatment provided to Mom and for the support given to us during the most difficult times. As for the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home, we don’t know how Mom or we could have made this journey without your loving care. This includes staff from every department — caregivers, nursing, dietary, housekeeping, recreation — you name it. We noticed when you took the time over the years, to touch Mom’s hand or say a kind word when she was crying or agitated and thank you for doing so. During Mom’s final days, it seemed like our family grew and our grief was shared. We feel that Mom’s spirt is finally at peace and we hope that by now Dad learned to jive. Mom, you were so loved in your lifetime and will be for the rest of ours. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Donations in memory of Mom can be made to the Northside Community Guest Home. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com.

He was born on November 27th, 1928, to the late Danny Sandy and Jessie Agnes (Cameron) at his family home in Rankinville. Joe will be fondly remembered for his strong work ethic. Always an entrepreneur, in his early years, he worked as a woodsman and truck driver before taking over the family dairy farm which he ran for almost 30 years with his wife and daughters. At the same time, he also proudly drove the school bus for 30 years and is warmly remembered by his precious passengers. In his retirement, he never stopped working. Joe enjoyed preparing his winter’s wood, planting a large potato and vegetable garden and spending time in his garage tinkering on his lawnmower, four-wheeler or building another washer-toss game for a family member. Always a gentleman, he was a man of few words but when he spoke or gave the ‘look’, you listened and you knew what he had to say was going to be both important and good advice. His quiet, unassuming way, steady presence and guidance was not only felt by his own children and grandchildren, he positively influenced many nephews and nieces who idolized him. Joe loved a good story, had a quick wit and was well known as an avid card player and in particular his passion for a good game of crib. He attended many card games and tournaments throughout the area and his card playing friends will miss him. In addition to Florence, Joe will be deeply missed and lovingly cherished by five daughters Josie (John MacEachern), Tena (Leslie Morrison), Maureen (Eddie MacDonald), Deanna (Stephen Gillis) and Jolene (Mark Korethoski); 13 grandchildren Andrew, Iain, Jonathan, Mallory, Alex, Nicholas, Melissa, Emma, Daniel, Mack, Kaya, Brea, Avery; one great-grandson Ben, who all will miss spending time with their “Papa”; brother Eddie; and sisters Peggy Small, Catherine MacDonald, and Maud (Omer) Campbell. Joe was predeceased by his daughter Gen; brothers Alex, Neil and Edward; and sisters Annie Mae Rankin MacDonald, Rebecca MacNeil, Betty MacDonald and Belle Campbell. Joe did not complain once during his illness and fought it with extreme determination, dignity and pride. Sincere gratitude and thanks to all those involved in his care, in particular Dr. Suzie Egar, Dr. John Ritter, Johnena Lee and Melissa Beaton, along with the entire home support team and care givers who provided him with loving care and comfort. Special thanks to Lori Anne MacDonald for her calming, caring and exceptional professionalism that provided great comfort and quiet reassurance to Dad and our entire family. You truly do have special gifts and qualities that enabled our family to fulfill Dad’s wish of remaining at home. You were his angel in disguise! We, his daughters, would like to acknowledge our mother’s dedication and loving devotion in our Dad’s care which improved his quality of life. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish and was extremely proud to recently receive his Knights of Columbus 50-year service and honourary life member pins. Dad didn’t know what failure was – if he said he was going to do something he did it with confidence and integrity. He lived by the Clan MacNeil Motto “Buaidh No Bas - Conquer or Die”. It was an honour and privilege to journey with him. Visitation was held in St. Mary’s Parish Church Vestry, Mabou, on Friday, November 7th, 2014 and the funeral was held on Saturday, November 8th, 2014 with Father Angus Morris officiating. Came across the will of Nicholas Young living in Little Bras d'Or dated 11 Jan 1847. His wife is named as Ann and he had three sons; Edward, William and Thomas. Thomas had a son named Nicholas. Those are all named in the Will. Can't seem to find those names in anything I have or in any other documents I have access to. He nor his sons seem to be named in the 1818 Census of Little Bras d'Or. Anyone ever come across these names in the Young/LeJeune lines? Thom
