Born in Dobrzyn, Poland, the younger of two children, she was the daughter of the late Stefan and Aniela (Konkow) Jarzabek. Krystyna grew up in a home filled with love, mischief, music and the arts. She was passionate about her children and her friends; her kitchen "care packages" fed many a hungry university student and her dinner parties were second to none. She was a consummate backwoods forager before it became trendy and spent many hours tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Amelia (Joseph) Somers Born: July 29th, 1913 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: November 29th, 2014 On Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, Amelia 'Meme' Somers passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. A legend is gone! She was born one hundred and one years ago on July 29, 1913, the daughter of the late Habeeb and Sarah (Libbus) Joseph. Amelia is survived by her loving sister, Henrettia Sampson and her companion George Curtis, Lower Sackville, N.S. Amelia is also survived by her sister-in-law Mabel Joseph and the Joseph family who all grew up with ”Aunt Meme” in the big house on Townsend Street. Amelia was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Somers, her brothers, Joseph (Katherine), Abraham (Helen), Samuel (Thelma), David (Dates) Joseph and brother-in-law, Roy Sampson. Amelia, or “Aunt Meme”, as she was affectionately known, will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews to whom she passed on many wonderful Lebanese traditions. She recently supervised the making of over 4,300 fatiyahs as the Joseph families prepared for Christmas. The tradition of making fatiyahs, leben, kibbie and salebis on Old Christmas Day will live on forever in the lives of her family. Amelia will be fondly remembered by the many patrons of Kay’s Kozy Korner where she worked for over 25 years. Although small in stature, her presence behind the counter was larger than life. She was active in many organizations including the St. Joseph’s CWL but it was as a member of the Daughters of Mary, the ladies’ auxiliary of the Lebanese-Syrian Benevolent Society that she made her greatest contribution. Amelia was an active member for over 80 years and helped maintain and support the Lebanese heritage that is such an important part of our community. She belonged to several bowling leagues. Amelia always enjoyed the friendship and competition of these leagues and made many wonderful friends over the years. Reluctantly she had to hang up her bowling shoes at the age of 96 when the Bowl-Mor Lanes closed. She also excelled at tarabish and enjoyed nothing more than beating one of her nieces or nephews in a game of crib. Those who knew Amelia best always marvelled at her keen mind and her ability for the quick and accurate recall. Need a phone number, an address or a birthday date, just ask Meme. A beautiful mind! Amelia had a long and wonderful life, living every day to the fullest. She was born shortly after the Titanic sank before the First World War began and experienced so much during her 101 years. A devout Christian, Amelia lived a dignified life that reflected her strong religious beliefs. She touched the lives of many and her kind and caring ways will be forever missed. Visitation for Amelia will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish formerly St. Joseph’s Church, 40 Cabot St. on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m., Rev. While on vacation visiting family in England, the US stock market crashed, and Jack and Ethel May raised John in Barnett, what is now North London. John was a good student and excelled at maths, and after completing school worked as an accountant at S. Maw, Son and Sons. In 1940, John joined the Home Guard to defend England, trained in weapons and tactics along with other boys under the instructions of veterans of The Great War. In 1942, at his father's suggestion, John enlisted in the US Army Air Corps, and decided his most valuable military skill was the ability to keep books in pounds, shillings, and pence. His responsibilities as bookkeeper for the officers mess expanded to include trips to Scotland to purchase Scotch. He served in a replacement unit through France and Germany. Following the war, John returned to New York City to, as he said, "study the romance of accountancy" at Columbia University. It was during his studies that John met and married a young sculptress, Stephanie Middleton. As spontaneously impulsive as he was methodically plodding, John was absolutely devoted to Stephanie her whole life. As he phrased it after her passing, "I made all the important decisions, like what we would have for breakfast, and Stephanie made the unimportant decisions, like what country we would live in." After a brief stint with Price Waterhouse, John and Stephanie moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked for Aetna Life and Casualty for 20 years. John raised his two children, Geoffrey and Elizabeth, as he rose through the ranks of accountants and bean counters from rows of desks to the border cubicles, to frosted glass partitions by the windows. By the age of 48, John had a private ground floor corner office with board table, couch and plush chairs at head office, and his printed signature appeared on every check the Aetna issued. Before his 50th birthday as a Senior Vice President, he walked away from it all, on Stephanie's suggestion that the family move to Margaree Harbour. For the next 28 years, John ran the Schooner Village Gift Shop and Schooner Restaurant in Margaree Harbour. John dressed in his kilts, his thin corporate ties obscured under an unruly beard. John was a living landmark greeting visitors and posing with the blue-haired ladies who poured out of the endless tour buses, increasingly immersed in the language and music of his highland Scots ancestors, remaking himself, as he re-sculpted his expanding miniature armies of Napoleonic Wars .The collection of toy soldiers he had begun with Stephanie's enthusiastic support as University students in Manhattan grew by 2001 to historically accurate displays of events in the Waterloo campaign containing 6000 figures. The expropriation of Stephanie and John's business to accommodate the new bridge signalled his retirement. Throughout his life, John sought to serve his world, with the United World Federalists (World Peace Through World Law), Bloomfield Open Spaces Committee, Alvin B. Wood Scholarship, and supporting Stephanie's anti-war efforts in Connecticut, Cape Breton Landowners Against the Spray, Margaree Tourism Association and Heritage River Committee, Save our Seas and Shores and other tourism and environmental groups in Nova Scotia. Following Stephanie's death in 2003, dementia increasingly laid hold of his mind, robbing him of his memories and reason. He spent his final years in the exceptionally wonderful hands of the kind caregivers at Cheticamp's Sacred Heart Medical Clinic and Inverness' Inverary Manor. On Monday, November 17th Gampo Abbey conducted a Sukhavati ceremony for John, attended by his family. John is survived by his children Elizabeth May (Ottawa and Sidney, BC), Geoffrey May and daughter-in-law Rebecca-Lynne (Margaree Harbour); granddaughter Cate May Burton (Halifax); grandson Andrew MacDonald (Ottawa) and two great granddaughters, Mary Jane Alexis, and Grace Marguerite (Ottawa). To honour John's memory, donations to the Green Party of Canada would be most appropriate. Remembered fondly as brother of Ann (Michael) White, Kit (Mocca) Moxley, Debbie (Peter) Gillis and John Mac Isaac. Born in Inverness, Cape Breton on May 10th, 1950, Howie was an Islander through and through; Cape Breton was truly the home of his heart. A loving cousin, uncle, and in-law to his large extended family throughout Canada and the US, he always showed true Celtic spirit, welcoming anyone with his “down home” hospitality; Howie always “had the kettle on.” He had a quick wit, an infectious laugh, and was always ready for a good one-liner. He worked hard his whole life for his family, but enjoyed playing video games, having movie marathons, and working on his “honey-do” list after his retirement in 2010. Most of all, he was a loving and generous Papa and husband who took great pride in his family. His kindness and unconditional generosity were felt by all he met, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We are grateful for the time we shared and the memories we have to cherish. Kevin MacNeil 76, Sydney Kevin MacNeil, 76, of Sydney River, passed away on Nov. 27, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a short illness. He was the youngest of five children of the late George and Gertrude (Gillis) MacNeil. Kevin is survived by his son, Andrew (Patrick); fuzzy grandbabies, Maggie, Minerva and Martha; sister, June MacKeigan; brother, Henry (Greta); sister-inlaw, Helen, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Known to most as a prominent union leader, or troublemaker to some, Kevin held numerous jobs in a variety of fields. He was everything from a steel worker, building inspector, dog catcher, meter man, and a national representative for the C.U.P.E. Over his many years Kevin worked with the Boys & Girls Club, was a member of the Kennel Club, and the Nova Scotia Labour Congress, a parachuting fanatic, and an avid N.D.P supporter. On top of everything he has done for the community he was the parade marshall for many Santa Claus parades and sat on a great deal of arbitration boards. Dad always fought for what he believed in, never backed down and encouraged others to do the same! Picket lines were walked and signs were made in all hopes of change, equality, and better pay. When Dad was not tending to the pool (that he never swam in), he could be found “fixing” computers, playing solitaire, and always finding something for me to do. He also enjoyed a good stiff drink with the neighborhood men as they sat and listened as he recalled labour events. He educated so many on their rights and was always willing to give advice and help where he could. Three years ago, Kevin lost the love of his life, soul mate and rock, his wife Sandra. He was predeceased by three children in infancy; brother, Gerry; sister, Ruth Tutty; brothers-in-law, Glen Tutty and Doug MacKeigan. Leo Richard Ryan Born In: Sydney Born: February 12th, 1946 Passed in: Southside Boularderie Passed on: November 20th, 2014 With broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Leo Richard Ryan, of Southside Boularderie, who died at home on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014. Dad was born Feb. 12, 1946 in Sydney. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Dad was a graduate of vocational school in Sydney and worked for over 30 years as an electrician at the Sydney Steel Plant. While attending vocational school, he played hockey and ran track and field. He grew up in Whitney Pier, but Southside Boularderie would become his home after marrying Anne in 1969. Dad was a man of great faith, who served both St. Joachim and the parish of St. Joseph with pride. He served on the St. Joachim Parish Council, and served for many years on the St. Joseph Bereavement team, alongside his wife. Together Mom and Dad worked as a team on many church projects, and devoted much of their time and energy into making St. Joachim the special place it is. Dad loved fishing, harness racing, and playing cards, which he was baptized into by his in-laws, the late Hughie Angus and Flora Jobes. Many hours were spent around the kitchen table in classic battles of auction and high-low which Dad thoroughly enjoyed. He also loved the peaceful jaunts to his favourite fishing holes. From a young age Dad could be found at Cape Breton Sports Centre, where he learned how to jog, train and care for race horses. He was the proud owner of the trotter Spencer Rapid in the late 60s and would remain involved in harness racing throughout his life. He relished his annual trips to Old Home Week every August since 1986 for the Gold Cup and Saucer, where he lived and breathed the sport he loved so much. Anne’s illness this summer meant Dad missed Old Home Week for the first time in 28 years, a tribute to the relationship he and Mom had. Dad loved going to Northside Downs as well, attending the races weekly and stopping by the barns to chat with his friends. Dad previously volunteered as an umpire with the Boularderie Little League and enjoyed taking his children to 4-H, baseball, dancing, and concerts. He was so proud of his family's accomplishments. Leo is survived by his son, Shane (Sheri), North Sydney; daughters, Laurie, Sydney Mines and Eleanor, who he provided terrific care for, at home, along with his grandchildren, Brandon, Ayden, Nolan, and Sam. Besides his parents, Leo was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne (Jobes) Ryan, on Nov. 13, 2014. Visitation for the late Leo Richard Ryan will take place on Monday. Nov. 24, 2014, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim Church, Southside Boularderie, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Donations in Leo’s memory may be made to the Haley Street Adult Services Centre. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. Tenny Whitfield Born In: Glace Bay Born: February 10th, 1951 Passed in: Edmonton, Canada Passed on: November 10th, 2014 Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. -Langston Hughes Tenny was dreamer all his life and he followed his dreams - he never let them die. He was a purveyor of beauty from the mundane to the lofty. To know Tenny Whitfield was to know a man who truly enjoyed life, people, animals, art, rocks, nature and the world around him. On a clear winter morning, Tenny's dreaming came to an end when he passed peacefully at home with his family after a struggle with lung cancer. Born on Cape Breton Island, he was a proud 'Bay boy' with a family heritage in coal mining and teaching. Tenny came to Edmonton with his family at age five and he lived there his whole life. He was a bright, curious child with a stubborn, cheerful nature. When he was six years old, Tenny had a stroke that left him with some right-side paralysis and a condition known as dystonia. So many things and people played parts in this remarkable man's life. His photography and thirst for adventure took him to Vietnam where he was embedded on an aircraft carrier during the war as a correspondent for the United Press. After 14 months “in country” and getting shot, he ventured to Ansel Adams' studio to take a course on “how to see.” After graduating from NAIT as a social worker, Tenny worked tirelessly to help others; he was a passionate advocate for the rights of disabled people. Wherever he lent a helping hand — from homeless shelters to executive offices — Tenny cared and he made a difference. He was a photographer and journalist for The Spokesman newspaper, and Dialog magazine, and he worked with Lone Pine Publishing as an illustrator. He was an entrepreneur: operating his own Timberbear art shops in Capilano Mall and Whyte Avenue, and taking his work on the road to trade fairs all over Western Canada. Tenny was known as 'The Bear' — a name that originated from his time spent on Admiralty Island off the coast of Alaska, a place that is home to a handful of people and 5,000 grizzlies. Tenny won an arm wrestling championship in Bonn, Germany, and belonged to several fraternal organizations, most recently his “Men Without Hats” group which he really enjoyed. Whether he was behind a camera lens or in his drawing studio, Tenny strove to capture all aspects of the world around him, as he saw them: through a lens of beauty and love. Tenny was best known as a master pen and ink artist. His works of wolves, eagles, and the rest of what he called his “menagerie” are proudly displayed in private collections across Alberta and around the world. He left a photographic record of people, cabins, grain elevators, trees, flowers, abandoned cars — you name it. Some of his more famous subjects include Premier Peter Lougheed and Wayne Gretzky. He left us with a rich legacy of visual memories that resonate triumph over tribulation and are as manifestation of his life's dreams that we can all share. (His photo collection can be viewed at his website: www.timberbearart.com) Tenny's love for travel was unparalleled. He was forever going somewhere. In his youth, he hitchhiked across the continent several times. Often, he'd take off to the mountains, just to go; in 2012 he took a solo road trip to the American Southwest, a place that was on his bucket list. In the last 15 years, with his beloved Karen, he travelled to Europe, Cuba, India, and, most recently, to Scotland, his ancestral home. Tenny never stopped studying, learning, absorbing the world around him. His interests were eclectic. Whether he was studying the intricate world of aviation (had circumstances permitted, he would have been a pilot) or researching his next travel destination, investigating the workings of firearms or the structure of rocks, he was completely absorbed. Whatever Tenny took an interest in, he learned all about it. His chief interest, though, was people. When Tenny met someone, he wanted to know all about them; he saw the beauty of everyone's soul and was the greatest friend anyone could ever have. Tenny leaves his memories to his survivors: his wife, Karen Berger, mother, Inez Whitfield, sister, Kendra Whitfield, stepsons, Justin and Jesse Berger, mother-in-law, Micheline Haydock, sister-in-law, Lynn Haydock, granddaughters, Faith and Mahiken Wilson and their mother Kim Wilson, and a myriad of extended family members and cherished friends including Uncle Don and Aunt Joyce Martin, the Carolina and Cape Breton cousins, and Melissa Valade, Jay Simpson, Cliff Pope and Alvin Fenton. He was predeceased by his beloved grandparents Danny and Lydia Martin. How can one encapsulate the life of a man like Tenny whose incredible essence now belongs to the earthly planet he so loved and to the universe he so embraced? Why, we'll do as he did and “Just get on with it!”. We love you, Tenny, and we take up the challenges and joys of life for you. A celebration of Tenny's life will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at McClure United Church, 13708 - 74 St., Edmonton. Viewing 11 a.m., farewell service at 12 p.m., lunch at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens at 3:30 p.m. To sign the book of condolences please visit www.evergreenmemorial.com.
