Ignatius McCormick Passed on: December 19th, 2014 A quiet man, a kind man, a gentleman Surrounded by family, Ignatius McCormick passed away in the manner in which he lived his life: quietly and peacefully on Dec. 19, 2014. Although Naish was a minimalist, choosing to live simply, there were no boundaries to the depths of his kindness. He gave largely to charity, to friends in need, and true to his nature, he always gave quietly. His own children often did not know the extent of his charity as Naish found joy in the act rather than the recognition. He also found joy in his daily walks and sought guidance to live a life of goodness from his steadfast faith. Naish worked hard to provide a comfortable life for his family as a proprietor of several businesses over the years. He loved children and took extreme pride in his role as a grandfather. During retirement, Naish and Shirley escaped the harsh Canadian winters and travelled south to Florida where sunshine and friends awaited them. Naish suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in his later years and received exceptional and loving care at Seaview Manor. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children, Lee (Paddy) Gillis, Diane (Paul) McNeil and Robert (Annette) McCormick; his grandchildren, Gregory, Lauren, Alex, Jaime, Robyn, Leah, Jack and his remaining siblings, Audrey (Wolfgang) Bruckert, Stephen (Eileen) McCormick and Myles (Shirley) McCormick. He was predeceased by his parents, John Edward and Sarah McCormick, his brothers, Daniel, John, Eric, Joesph and Edward and his sisters, Mary, Carmelita, Jeanette and Delores (in infancy). In lieu of flowers, Naish would be honoured to be remembered by a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or the Glace Bay Food Bank. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay with the Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will follow in St. Eugene's Cemetert. I will then go to a peaceful rest, connected with the whole universe and with a smirk on my face, knowing that I did the best to live fully and completely.” ~ Steve Webster. Francis 'Geekers' MacLean Born In: New Waterford Passed on: December 15th, 2014 Dec. 15, 2014 was a very sad day for our family as God called home our beloved Francis 'Geekers', a caring husband to Evelyn (Roper), amazing father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Francis was born and raised in New Waterford, the son of Frank and Jessie (Kavanaugh) MacLean. Anyone who knew Francis was drawn in by his infectious smile and jolly laugh. His generous spirit was his greatest gift to both our family and the community. He was a true gentleman and role model in the community of New Waterford. Francis attended Mount Carmel School and later attended St. F.X University. He returned home to join his father in his business, Hi-Fi Novelty — a business he ran for many years after the passing of his father, Frank. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he also owned several other successful businesses, and he shared his success with everyone he loved. A passion for politics also followed Francis throughout his life and he played a large role in many political campaigns in our community. Francis was Ward 2 councillor in the town for nine years. Through his role as councillor, he was able to touch many people and truly fulfill his passion for the people within the community of New Waterford, a town he deeply loved. An original member of the New Waterford Strands basketball team, Francis was passionate about sports throughout his life. He was co-owner of the New Waterford Jets hockey team, a proud sponsor of the New Waterford Hi-Fi Hawks baseball team, and he also enjoyed playing a round of golf with friends, as well as curling and bowling in his younger years. Every Friday night you could find Evelyn and Geekers at the KOC playing darts with friends for more than 30 years. But more than anything, his favourite pastime was attending dances with Evelyn or dancing with her at home in the kitchen. He was an honorary life member of the New Waterford Rotary Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years and was a past grand knight. Francis was so honoured to be a nominee for the New Waterford Senior of the Year last year. He was also involved with the Special Olympics for many years; as well, Francis was a long-time member of the parish council and the New Waterford Credit Union board. But when it came to community, Francis took great pride in his role with the Combined Christmas Giving Committee. Christmas in our house is the best day of the year and he wanted to ensure that everyone in the community could have the same. Among many interests — nothing could dull the passion that Francis held for his family. His children and grandchildren were the “light of his life”, and his grandchildren will forever remember him for his bright spirit, and that he never missed an occasion big or small. Francis is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn (Roper) and his children, Francis (Kim), Darren (Lorna), Lorne (Sherry) and Cynthia (Rardy). He will be deeply missed and loved by his eight grandchildren, Jenni (Chris), Mitchell, Kelsea, Evan, Samantha, Adriana, Troy and Jessica, as well as his step-grandchildren, Courtney and Mark. He is also survived by his sisters, Christina and Maryena (Mike); sisters-in-law, Midge (Bill) and Rose (Alex), along with nieces and nephews. Francis was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, brother, Stephen in infancy, and loving sister, Anne, who generously gave of herself so that we could have him for 15 years after donating a kidney to Francis. He was also predeceased by his best friend and sister-in-law, Al and Kay Dwyer. Francis loved time spent with his family, summers spent in East Bay, and playfully joking with family and friends. He will be remembered for both his humility and kindness. He gave of himself to others and never asked for anything in return. His legacy to our family is his strong morals and big heart. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014 from 6-9 p.m and a funeral mass will take place on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 at St. Leonard’s Parish in New Waterford at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A luncheon will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately following the funeral mass. Members of the KOC will assemble for a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. As a student at St. Agnes High School in New Waterford, at age 16 Mom was recruited to temporarily teach lower grades, and she remained a life-long learner, reader, and letter writer. She returned, in mid life, to studying, receiving numerous certificates in Adult Education and awards for community service. Among the latter were recognition for many years of devotion to the St. James Altar Society and for participation as volunteer in the Mt. Carmel Elementary School program. Renowned for her culinary skills (as well as her wit), Mom’s original ‘Cape Breton Cherry Tort was a contest winner, and her entry in “Quilts of the Island” travelling exhibit merited a certificate for original design...all in keeping with her knitting, crocheting, and sewing skills. A lovely dancer, Mom (and Dad) hosted many parties at our home, where Johann Strauss waltzes and Frankie Yankovic polkas (along with a dram or two of assorted liquid ‘refreshments’) and excellent food enlivened the celebrations. Mom dearly loved her home on the edge of Lingan Bay and modeled for us a deep and abiding respect and appreciation of nature’s gifts. In this, as in every other way, she nurtured the world around her. Visitation will be held at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9.
