Liz & others.. Yes, the younger folk have no interest today. They are too busy playing with the electronics.. especially the two finger one. A few years ago, a newscast had an “Old Technology Versa New Technology” story on the news. They had two finger happy teens and two old goat, also with trigger happy fingers. The kids thought they had it in the bag when they saw these two old men. One person from each group, was given the same message to send to their partner. To watch this was very funny. They were given start, and the game was on. The old fella, while reading the line to send, was sending it at the same time, while the receiver was reading it out on the other end. The kid was still trying to type the message when the old fella’s were already finished. These kids and their friends that were watching were stunned.. what’s this…. morris code versa texting and they beat us….. My son’s comment when he saw this on tv…. "Those kids didn’t have the best type of phone to use”, “what an excuse I said to him" Me, I thought wow, these old goats didn’t need to look at the machine to! send the message, where as the kids who are texting, need to look at the keyboard & find the letters before they can send the message & same goes for receiving the message. I remember when my nephew was in grade four (he’s soon to be 38 yrs) where it was part of the history class to do a family tree. And in most cases, kids only know up to their grandparents if that. Well, my nephew asked me for help. And help I gave him, 11 generations of one direct line. His teacher was blown away. That was back in the eighties. The teacher asked me if I could come into the class for two sessions and give a demonstration of how to search. So I took them up on the opportunity, and downgraded my teachings for kids in grade four. What fun I had that time, and the kids were really curious. I went away with the idea, that maybe this should be taught in school as part of the social studies program, starting in grade four, then grade eight and the final push in grad 12… And at each level, be given a certificate of completion of the level. By the time they finished high school, there may be some young genealogist with enough on their plates to continue on. When I started, was almost two years after my father passed in 1980, but his mother was still living. I planned a trip to CB (July 1st, 1982) to see all the extended families on both sides, my grandmother died six weeks before I got there. I went in tow with my steno pads and wrote down everything relatives told me about relatives.. I still have those steno pads, and any materials that relatives gave me in print. One set of papers I was given back then, has taken me til two years ago to find the line in Scotland and when they came to Nova Scotia. I’d look at the papers, do what I could and then get stuck, so the papers were put down again, and on I went to another line til I got stuck again. With so much coming online today, it’s getting easier to tie the loose ends together. Recently as December 2014, I found two more generations of a line I’ve been stuck on from 1760 in London, England. The LDS Family Centre has uploaded more records, and that greatly helped me to find when the parents of the kid born in 1760 were married and all the siblings of the 1760 birth, when the parents were born & their parents, and the surname of the mother of the child born in 1760 and when she died, before the father remarried. All of these records are in the same parish in London. Years ago, I created a list of "how to” & “where to” look when searching for relatives, that could be applied to any search you are doing, even if it’s not genealogy related. Every now and then, I add another piece of info to this list. YES, kids need to be given a push into GENEALOGY so that our work can be carried on into the future. I attribute this to the fact that that like myself as a youngster, we didn't need any of the information beyond our parents and grandparents, but also some of the past of our ancestors was not spoken of. So the children of today need to start a family tree and begin simple just to spark the interest, then maybe they will be intrigued somewhere down the road to pursue more info and details about these people. I only began my family tree back in 1995-96 after my dad and then my father in law passed away, I was older than 30. It's tough getting info when your sources are older and family members are no longer with us. > Elizabeth MacEachern > > ---- Thom McCabe via <[email protected]> wrote: >> I noticed that there is a lower frequency of posts to the list also Bill. I noticed that there is a lower frequency of posts to the list also Bill. I attribute that to many things one being the reduction of those of us who are still searching. We have lost many of our listers over the years and the younger generation has little or no interest in my opinion. I also think that there are many who have come to the end of their searches for the Cape Breton area and now are looking farther afield like myself. From time to time I do find another "unknown" family member and ask for assistance but that has been done with less frequency. My C B direct lines are close to complete. There are a few that I cannot find any data on but that is because there is no data out there even in the church or registration documents so I leave it as it is. I see no need to go to fourth or fifth cousin data searches. I continually am thankful for those on this list who still post and answer posts as all have helped me in the past to compile the data I have today. Anyway, that is my input and my thoughts for what it is worth. As well as what both Bill & Thom have mentioned about the list……….some days I have difficulty posting the obituaries on the list. Even today, they haven’t archived yet, and I sent them in almost two hours ago. Yes, they are sent in each day, but don’t always make it into the archives hense you don’t receive them over the list. On those days, I try several times in a day for them to be archived, but to no avail. Last week alone, both Friday & Saturday are missing. So what is happening to things that people are posting and not getting on the list. She grew up, went to school in Glace Bay and lived happily surrounded by friends and family. She met a handsome young man (Mr. Robert MacLean) and after a short engagement, they married and had a son (Douglas). In 1949, the young family left Nova Scotia in search of a better life. Arriving in Ucluelet in November of the same year, they quickly settled in what was then a very isolated west coast fishing and logging village. Lenora, husband Robert and their young son Douglas were accepted into the community and quickly called it home. They soon added a daughter (Susan) and then another son (Allan). With the passing of her husband Robert, she began working in the Post Office in 1964 and continued to do so for nearly 30 years, the last several years as Post Master. She was dearly loved by her co-workers, a devoted, hardworking person and always had a smile on her face. She remarried long time resident of Ucluelet, Lorne White in 1974, and became a mother to his daughter Myrna, who was still a young child. Lenora loved to travel and be with her family and friends. Lenora travelled to many places; some highlights are her trips to Alaska, Mexico, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, France and many U.S. States, including one of her favourites, Reno, Nevada. She loved traveling home to Nova Scotia and spoke often of her adventures. She was an active member of Sunshine Club, a group of wonderful people she loved to be with and played cards with them every Wednesday in Forest Glen. The highlight of Lenora's week was being able to spend her Fridays with friends at their social luncheons. Lenora loved to attend the church apple pie making and bake sale event. She was an active member of the Holy Family Church and a very devoted Catholic. Lenora was blessed in her later years with the friendship of a special care person, Jennifer Agustin. Lenora was able to live comfortably in her family home for many years, surrounded by family and friends. Hello, I am researching the identity of John Campbell, born at Isle of Coll or Isle of Tiree (Tyree), the Inner Hebrides, Argyllshire, Scotland; about abt. 1800 and settled in Pictou, NS., abt. 1821. John Campbell was noted as the engineer of and supervisor to the construction of the first of the lighthouses on St. Paul’s Island, Cape Breton, NS, about 1837/38; and then became Superintendant of the Humane Establishment there and Island Governor, and remained there until his retirement in 1857, with his son Samuel Cunard C. and grandson John Malcolm C. succeeding him. Quite a lot is documented on the latter two, and we know that John Campbell’s wife Marion Campbell was a dau. of Malcolm Campbell, Tacksman and then prop. of Cornaig, Isle of Coll. John and Marion married at the Isle of Coll, 31 Jan 1826. John is noted in the parish register as being of Pictou, NS. A published family notice at the time does the same, and confirms the ID of Marion's father. This couple had 10 children, of which only one, Samuel Cunard Campbell, married and had offspring. Based on places where their children were born, census and other information, I have developed the following timeline for John Campbell. Born at Isle of Coll or Isle of Tiree, Arg., Scotland , between 1797 and 1806; Travelled from Arg., Scotland to Pictou, NS abt. 1821; Married at Isle of Coll 1826; Living with wife Marion at Pictou, NS; 1826 to 1832; Family living at Whycogomah, CB, NS; 1834 to 1838; Family living at St. Paul’s Island, CB, NS; 1838 to 1857; Family living at Ingonish, CB, NS – 1861 Marion, widowed, living at Ingonish, CB, NS – 1871. Following this, Marion went to live with their son Samuel Cunard C. at St. Paul’s Island, and died there. It is written in one article that John Campbell was ageing and not very well in 1861, but we do know from the census and the article that he died between 1861/62 & 1871, perhaps near Ingonish???. As I wrote before, my primary objective is to identify the parents of John Campbell. It was written in our family history (via descendants of Marion’s cousins in Australia), that John was a blood cousin to Marion. Having much of this family documented, I can say that this generation of the family had 3 and possibly four John Campbells. Two can be immediately ruled out. I have just completed an update to my website Cape Bretoners in World Two<https://sites.google.com/site/cbinww2/>. It contains an additional 34 individuals for a total of 16, 110 and 208 new pages for fatal casualties in the period Aug-Dec 1944, with photos for 17 individuals that are not on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial <http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/virtualmem> website. Although I feel I'm getting close to completing the number of individuals that served I only have the bare information for many of them, including those that died in service. I invite everyone to have a look at my site and if they have any information they would like to share to fill out the form I have provided on my general Cape Bretoners at War <https://sites.google.com/site/cbatwar/>site. Your input is very much appreciated. Wayne Macvicar Mira Gut, NS Cape Bretoners at War:https://sites.google.com/site/cbatwar/ Cape Bretoners in World War Two:https://sites.google.com/site/cbinww2/
