George Caldwell MacLean Passed in: North Sydney It is with profound sadness that we announce George’s peaceful passing Monday at the Northside General Hospital on Feb. 2, 2015, just days before his 81st birthday. A quiet, intelligent man, George was revered by his family. He grew up in Cape Dauphin, Victoria County, helping his father fish, before buying his own lobster licence for 25 cents. After the birth of his son, he moved his family to the Boston area, where he pursued a career as an air conditioning and refrigeration operating engineer. He was a graduate of the Franklin Institute of Technology and did advanced training in York, Pennsylvania. Dad spent most of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington. He also worked at Quincy Cold Storage and Honeywell. After becoming disabled, he moved his family back to Cape Breton in 1970. George was a tall, powerful man who was known to give those close to him a strong handshake or a warm embrace. He swam with many a child clinging to his back, be it at a family reunion at Inverness Beach or after a canoe overturned on the Concord River. Dad loved and was fiercely proud of his children and his grandchildren, and their spouses. In his later years, and in his final days, the mere mention or thought of his two young great-grandchildren would bring a huge smile to his still handsome face. Dad played racquet sports and hockey. He took his kids to Fenway Park and was a big fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. George was a long-time resident of the Park View enriched housing apartments at the Northside Community Guest Home. In his first decade there, he was a helpful handyman to his older neighbours and enjoyed his morning coffee dates with staff. In later years, he was the one who needed help, and he got it. Maintaining his independence was a family goal, and he met it with the loving support of Marge. He liked nothing better than a good meal, especially if it was free. Lobster and cabbage rolls were two of his favourites. George is survived by his son, Greg (Debra) MacLean, North Sydney; his daughter, Tammy (Major Steve) Turner, Ottawa, and the mother of his children, his beloved Marjorie. He will be forever remembered by his grandchildren, Siobhan MacLean (Donnie) Pye, Erin (Andrew) Finnigan, North Sydney, and Shaeleen (Mitch) Power, Florence, and his pride and joy, great-grandchildren, Callum and Déia. George is also survived by his brother, Roy (Gladys) MacLean; sisters, Marguerite Allen and Shirley Blois; his frequent companion and nephew, John MacLean and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Roderick; his mother, Annie (MacRae) MacLean; brothers, Archie Don and Bill MacLean and sister, Christine Edge. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service for family will be held at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. with family friend Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at New Campbellton Cemetery. We would ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Cairdeil Place Society, P.O. Box 1865, Sydney, Nova Scotia, B1P 6H7. Online condolences can be made by visiting www.fillmore&whitman.com. “For those who loved him, he was father, grandfather, brother, friend and hero” Donna (MacCormack) Mitchell Passed in: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Passed on: February 1st, 2015 Former Whitney Pier resident Donna (MacCormack) Mitchell passed away on Feb. 1, 2015 at the Lion’s Gate Hospital in Vancouver. Anna Taylor Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed in: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: January 30th, 2015 Fare thee well, love. Our beloved mother Anna Taylor died Friday, January 30, at Dartmouth General Hospital. She was 87. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, she was the only daughter of Gordon and Dorothy Rudderham. After graduating from Sydney Academy she left the family farm and her four brothers for Halifax, where she studied nursing at the Victoria General Hospital. Her compassion made nursing a natural choice. That and her acute intelligence led her to place first in all of Nova Scotia in her RN exams. Working at the Victoria General Hospital, she met a handsome young intern, Al Taylor, of St. John’s and they were married at her family farm in Point Edward in 1950. His work as a physician and later in hospital administration resulted in many moves for the family. All four of their children were born in different locations spanning three provinces. In 1973 they were very happy to return to Halifax to be closer to the Maritimes and family. There they lived until his sudden death by heart attack at the age of 50, in 1976. Anna was devastated by the loss of Al and mourned him all her life. Soon after his death she moved back to the family farm in Point Edward with her youngest daughter Barbara. She cherished life on the farm with its changing seasons and rhythms of country life, as well as being near her four brothers and their families. She loved haymaking, new calves, the vegetable garden, and swimming in the ocean. A generation of haymakers at the farm will remember Anna for her contributions of lemonade, cookies, sandwiches and muffins. In her later years, she remained dedicated to helping others and being of use to her brother, Sam. She enjoyed greatly her annual trips to Bermuda. She was an avid reader and experienced the world and its people through books, television and the movies. Her quiet grace and cheerfulness made her a patient and endearing mother. Her support and encouragement were constant. In 2008 she returned to Halifax to be closer to her daughters Leslie and Barbara. Anna is survived by her four children: Gordon (Kanata, ON), Alison (Andrew Love, Calgary), Leslie (Stuart Dalton, deceased, Halifax) and Barbara, Dartmouth. She is also survived by her two youngest brothers Robert (Bette) Rudderham, Halifax and Point Edward and Rowe (Sally) Rudderham, Westmount, Cape Breton, and sister-in-law Dawn Rudderham, Point Edward. She was predeceased by her brothers Samuel (Sam) and William Jerome(Jerry). Anna is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeffrey Love (Heather), Toronto, ON, Katie Love (David Epstein) , Calgary; Gerald Dalton (Daegu, South Korea) and Alan Dalton (Halifax), by two great grandchildren, Eloise Love and Elliot Epstein, and by many nieces and nephews. Her children would like to thank the staff of Glasgow Hall, and the staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital, 3 West, for their care and kindness. No memorial service will be held at this time. A family memorial service will be held in Cape Breton at a later date. As she asked, her ashes will be scattered at the farm, a place that brought her great peace all her life. Donations in her memory may be made to any organization that supports literacy or humanitarian causes. Online condolences may be left at www.coleharbourfuneral.com

Nana and Papa hosted the best of weekend sleepovers at the family Bungalow in Gillis Lake where they watched their grandchildren learn to swim, roast marshmallows and build friendships to last a lifetime. Like she did with her own children, she taught her grandchildren the true value of respect and and the importance of family. Mom and her closest friends served for many decades with the Daughters' of Mary and the St. Joseph's Lebanese and Syrian Benevolent Society at the Cedars Club in Sydney. Mom loved family gatherings and loved nothing more than seeing her growing family carrying on her traditions and enjoying each others company. A loving and nurturing wife, the finest matriarch, a role model and confidante to her children, the best friend to her grandchildren, the true definition of a 'big sister' to the Longs, Mom was and the epitome of greatness. Mom will be sadly missed by her sons, Tommy (Charmaine) and Jerry (Shelly); daughters, Evelyn (Clarence) MacNamara, Michele (Kenny) MacKinnon, Sheila (Murdock) MacLeod, and Shauna (Adrian) Hanna, all of Sydney; cherished grandchildren, Jocelyn, Matthew, Lindsay, Shaun, Michael, Mark, Ryan, Jeff, Katie Andrew, Adam and Brandon; and great-grandchildren, Justin, Jesse, Julie, Haylee and Sidney. Mom is also survived by her brothers, George (Ruth), Gerald (Mary), Jackie, Charlie (Anne), Cameron and Murray; sisters, Florence (Francis), Shirley, Louise (Dave), Virginia (Joe), and Vivian (Mike); sister-in-law Anne Riley; many nieces and nephews, as well as her very special friend and caregiver, Bertha Steele. Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her best friend and loving husband of 57 years, Michael Stevens. She was also predeceased by her brother Robert, sister Lillian, brother-in-law John Taylor, and twin brothers in infancy. Visitation for Evelyn will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Monday, Jan. 26 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish, formerly St. Joseph's Parish, 40 Cabot St. on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m., with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one's choice. At the same time, it is with the greatest joy that we are able to call him husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and to know that his larger than life persona and his trademark gruffness will never be forgotten. A proud New Waterford boy, Doug was born on Jan. 3, 1944, to the late Mary and Gordon McVicar. He grew up in New Waterford and married Midge Matlock in 1965 and moved to Sydney where, together, they raised their boys, Ian and Todd. He worked at McVicar Pharmacy, Chaisson & MacDonald and Kenmount Ford. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Midge; his sons, Ian (Anita) and Todd (Patsy); grandsons, Kyle, Breton, Colin, Cameron and Sean; sisters, Hilda, Lylie and Millie; great-granddaughters, Carly and Payton; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his brother, Art and his sister, Mildred. In his 70 years, Doug forged a trail of laughter, service and wisdom. He was a dedicated community leader with more than 40 years of uninterrupted community service to several organizations on which strong communities are built. A member of the Kinsmen executive for more than 40 years, he served two terms as president and was honoured multiple times as Kinsmen of the Year. In 1994, he received the Kinsman Lifetime Membership Award. His influence can still be seen at Horizon Achievement Center, an accomplishment in which he took much pride. His dedication to community service also included commitments to the Nova Scotia Air Cadets and Cape Breton Hospital Executive Board. Doug was also thoroughly interested and engaged in politics. He particularly (and regularly) enjoyed the miss-steps and miss-quotes of those “blue and orange” guys. The “red guys” will miss a loyal friend and vocal supporter who worked diligently for the causes to which he gave his support. He was known for never holding back an opinion, telling it like is, and more than a few people will miss debating hot-button topics with him — complete with laughter and volume. Doug and his cohorts held court daily at Tim Hortons on Welton Street arguing and debating the world’s events; and the world is a better place for the problems they solved. He had a love affair with antique cars and spent many joyful hours travelling with the boys from the car club. He was passionate about football, cheering and criticizing his beloved Pats as only he could. He had immeasurable love for his family, his cottage and life that he passed to “his boys” — Ian, Todd, Kyle, Breton, Colin, Cameron and Sean. The men that they are and the men they are becoming are the best testament to the life Doug led. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Douglas ‘Doug’ Judson McVicar will be held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at 10 a.m. at St. Leonard Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. Interment will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery, Scotchtown. A reception will be held at St. Leonard Parish Hall on Convent Street in which stories and memories of Doug will be shared with love and laughter. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doug may be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (www.cpffa.ca). Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com. 3. Hey you out in Vancouver, I knew you would reply and have something to say. Always have a suggested solution for any problem. Is there any reason you couldn't have just sent it to the list. Keep busy, well and in the know. Thanks for all you do for genealogy cuz.
