Hi, I am looking for a location on or near Ile Madame, Cape Breton it was referred to as a lighthouse on or near Laskey Point. My great grandfather left Arichat in a small skiff in May 1918, travelling to mainland Cape Breton. The skiff was overturned and he drowned near this lighthouse and I have not been able to find it's location but it may be a local name that is not recorded on a map. The lighthouse keeper saw the partly submerged boat after an hour or two and assisted in the rescue of the two survivors. One of the men who survived provided the location I described but he has long since passed on. Can anyone on this mail list help? Ed

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our wife and mother, Isabel Graham, who passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 10th, 2015 at the age of 83. Isabel was the beloved wife of Johnnie Graham for almost 63 years and a wise and loving mother, grandmother and soon to be great-grandmother. Born in 1931 in Black River, Nova Scotia, Isabel was the daughter of Ronald and Jessie Rankin and was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her brothers M.W., Duncan, Danny, Joe and Alex and sisters Dolly, Anna Mae, Martha, Flora, Theresa and Ronalda. Isabel came to Judique in 1952 when she married Johnnie and went on to have six children. Their house was filled with the sounds of laughter and music. She loved to step dance and could often be heard humming a tune as she worked around the kitchen. Mom was a wonderful cook who loved nothing better than making tea for the many friends and family that walked through the door. Her biscuits and rolls and German Apple Cake were always on the table and you might even get a piece of homemade cheese to go along with it. She also enjoyed her many friends who frequently came to play a game of 63. A woman of great faith, Isabel truly lived the words “love thy neighbour”. She was kind and generous and when she saw a need in the community, she was the first to help out in any way she could. She always said, “It’s not what you have in life, it’s what you give away,” and she was certainly rich by those standards. Previous to that I resided at Williston House in Sydney, a comfie cozy place where all my amenities were met. A special thanks to nurse Julie, who was kind, caring and attentive. I was born in New Waterford, a son of the late Hattie (Bierge) Aucoin and Charles Chiasson. I received my early education in New Waterford and at St. Anne’s, Church Point. I graduated from St.F.X. in 1949 and then pursued a career in education. My first teaching position was in Judique, followed by St. Joseph’s and Sydney Academy. Later, I accepted positions as supervisor of French education and curriculum and later assistant superintendant, then superintendant, of the Cape Breton County School Board. I retired as CEO of the amalgamated Cape Breton and Sydney District School Board. I was a member of St Theresa’s parish, Sydney, a member of the Knights of Columbus, minister of the eucharist, and a lector. I enjoyed serving the community in various positions including officer in Sea Cadets, minor hockey coach, and a longtime member of the board of directors of MacGillvary Guest Home. I played golf for many years at Lingan Golf and Country Club and cheered for the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Yankees. I loved to garden and to play a good game of cards. I worked at Minimaar Metals which led me to meeting my wonderful wife, Anne, of 54 years. We met many times across the counter of Thompson and Sutherlands on Charlotte Street and the rest is history. We raised five wonderful children on Columbia Street in Sydney. There we had much joy watching our children grow and forge great friendships with the other families on the block and in the neighbourhood. The recent MacNeil DNA study enticed me to look back at some materials which I had much earlier encountered. In 1880 the book Irish Pedigrees; or the Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation by John O'Hart, was published. The fifth edition was published in 1892. The book was published in two volumes, the second containing the pedigrees... The intriguing thing about this book is that while both the MacDonalds and the MacNeils had claimed Irish roots, there is no mention of either in the pedigrees, and DNA studies of both clans link them to Norse not Irish The Nicholson clan claims Norse roots, but there is a pedigree for the Nicholsons within the book. I know of no DNA studies of the Nicholson line, but then there is always irony. -- Bill Nicholson Fraser Lake BC

Ok folks, I am doing what I normally do when I am confused or lost in my searches. One of my relatives is Philip Cook s/o William and Bridget Sampson. He married Alice Brown born about 1845 from Sydney Mines. Alice died 13 July 1939 in Sydney Mines. On their marriage certificate Alice's parents are listed as John Brown and Mary Gillis. When I go through the census data I can find a John Brown with Mary in Sydney Mines 1871 and 1881 but not sure if this is Mary Gillis. It is the only John Brown that fits the time line though for age. In my searching I found a John Brown buried in Brookside cemetery in Sydney Mines who fits the age line but his wife is listed as Mary Ann Forrest buried with him. So that might be the John and Mary in the census data I found. Anyone on the list able to provide clarification for me? As always, your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thom In CB
