    1. [NS-CB] MacKinnons at Chimney Corner, Inverness, NS
    2. Eugene & Bernie via
    3. There are several MacKinnon families at Chimney Corner in the 1871 census. Among them there is a Charles "Charles Ban" MacKinnon (1834-1915) who was married to Mary MacIsaac (1846-1926). A couple of doors down there is another Charles "Black Charlie" MacKinnon (1832-1916) who was married to Mary MacNeil (1845-1930). Any idea what the connection is, if any between the two Charles? I'm guessing they are cousins but don't know how they fit in with the other MacKinnon families: there is a widow Jane MacKinnon (b. 1807); John MacKinnon (b. 1797) ; and Neil MacKinnon (b. 1807) Are John, Neil and the deceased husband of Jane all siblings? Can anyone shed light on this family? --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com

And nothing seems the same But as God calls us one by one The chain will link again. Verse John 3.16

CAMERON It is with deepest sadness that her family announces the death of our beloved mother, Roberta Borden (MacMillan) Cameron which occurred on March 5th, 2015, at home at the great age of 95. Robie was born in Inverness, May 17th,1919 , the daughter of Doctor Charles and his wife, Diana (Roberts) MacMillan. After the early death of her father, the family helped their mother operate the Seaview Inn, which welcomed many illustrious guests during the height of the coal-mining era in Inverness. She attended local schools and graduated from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing in 1946, proudly leading the Province of Nova Scotia in obtaining her Registered Nurse designation. While at the Infirmary she nursed on the Merchant Marine Ward, caring for the injured who served on the North Atlantic during the Second World War. During the War she presented Princess Juliana, Crown Princess of the Nethlerlands, with a bouquet of flowers on her visit to the City of Halifax, in 1940. In 1946 she married Douglas Cameron, a veteran of World War II, who left us all much too early at age 49. Mom was then left to raise their nine children, and she did so with extraordinary grace and pride. Mom was a gifted and compassionate nurse and mentor, who decried the lack of uniforms and nurses’ caps, which she always believed were the proud badges of her profession. She held a strong work ethic, which she instilled in her family by her example of strength and dignity. She was a strong and inspiring mother, full of creativity and activity– whether quilting, painting, gardening, baking or cooking; she loved berry picking on Cape Mabou, tucking away with a crossword puzzle and swimming at Inverness Beach. She did it all! She was generous in sharing her many talents with others and encouraging others to nurture their own gifts. Mom believed in learning about one’s world, being active in one’s community and, above all else, family. There was no greater joy for Mom than a family gathering – bustling with all ages and all interests. She would simply sit back and beam! Her family of children were her joy and legacy. She welcomed everyone as her own as the family grew over the years. She had a strong profound faith and worked joyously for her church. She was very proud to be honoured by St. Matthew’s United Church when named a Lifetime Elder. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters Jean, Vivian, Mae and Chrissie, and brother Edward. She is survived by children Douglas (Betty Anne), Inverness; Margaret (Bruce Berger), Fort Erie, Ontario; Bob (Linda), Strathlorne; Eleanor (Alex) Ryan, Inverness; Christina (the late Rev. Glenn) MacDonald, Pictou; Fred (Louise Egan) Strathlorne and Port Hawkesbury; Charlie (Elaine), Whiteside; Maurice (Marion), Halifax; and Caroline (Norman Burton), at home. She will be fondly remembered by her 16 beloved grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, along with many other children throughout Canada who knew her as “Grammie Robie”. Her love was generous and boundless; her strength and wisdom, an example and gift to all. She will live forever in our hearts and minds . . . she will be with us always. Visitation was held in Inverness Funeral Home on Saturday, March 7th and Sunday, March 8th. Funeral service was held on Monday, March 9th in St. Matthew’s United Church, Inverness with Pastor Maggie Plant celebrating. Burial in St. John’s United Church Cemetery, Strathlorne at a later date. Leona passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2015, under the tender loving care of the staff and management at the MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, where mom’s spiritual needs were also well served. Born in Grand Etang, Cape Breton, on Nov. 4, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Denis and Adele (Doucet) Comier. As a teenager, Mom was one of the first organists at her church, in St. Joseph Du Moine. As a young adult she worked in Halifax, and often spoke fondly of her time there. After her marriage to our dad Armie, on Sept. 29, 1936, they began their life together, raising their children on Upper King Street, New Waterford, until 1964, when they moved to Amherst. Later in Amherst, Mom became involved as a volunteer working with children with special needs. She always said that you could learn a great deal about loving from these children. When Mom and Dad moved again to Moncton, she gave her time to the Birthright Organization, and assisted in preparing meals at St. Augustine’s Church for the disadvantaged. An evening was held in her honor, in Moncton, to celebrate her dedication to others. Mom was a kind and caring person, a very good listener and offered sage advice when asked. She was a positive influence on our lives, where both she and dad made many personal sacrifices to ensure we all attained our early goals in life. Our mother was dear to us and very seldom, if ever, uttered a complaint. Many talents that had been hidden during childbearing years, surfaced once our family was grown. Mom began dabbling in ceramics and then moved on to making her own pottery creations. From there she began painting in oils and later water colors. Her works are in the homes of family and friends in Canada and the United States, all given as gifts, never sold. When Dad retired in 1977, they spent 22 years wintering in Clearwater, Florida at Bay Aristocrat Village. They loved BAV and never missed a dance. While there, Mom taught the floor exercises at the clubhouse for years until she was 85 years of age. Over 200 people came to bid them farewell, when they left the park for the last time. Mom will be sadly missed by her loving children, Lester (Eunice) Chiasson, South Bar; Elaine (Bob) Tupper, Edmonton, Alta.; Adele (Wayne) Johnston, Rothesay, N.B.; Marcel (Annie) Chiasson, Ottawa, Ont.; sister Eva(late Marcel) Lariviere, Dieppe, N.B.; brothers, Joe (Theresa) Cormier and Wilfred (Veronica) Cormier, both of Sydney; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mom was also predeceased by her loving husband of 76 years Armie Chiasson, daughter Lorelle (Late Jim) MacLean, sisters, Annie-Blanche and Rita Cormier, grandchildren, Christina Chiasson, Jared Johnston and great-grandchildren, Eric MacLean and Reese Chiasson. Visitation will be held Monday evening, March 9, 2015, from 7-9 p.m. in V.J McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley will be celebrated Tuesday morning, 10 a.m. in St. Leonard’s Church, Mt. Carmel Ave., New Waterford. Immediately following the funeral mass, all are invited to join Leona’s family, for a reception at the KOC Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford. Interment will be at a later date, in Mt. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com <http://www.pierfuneralhome.com/> Ronald Joseph 'Rannie' Mullaly Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: March 6th, 2015 On March 6, 2015, the Good Lord called Rannie home after a brief hospital stay after recovering from surgery for a broken hip. Rannie was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine 'Cassie' (Gillis) Mullally. He lived in Whitney Pier all his life, near his extended family of 'relatives' The Rudderhams, Gillis’, Walls, and all the other longtime neighbours with the exception of a few weeks spent in the Assisted Living section of Parkland Retirement Home. Here he was loved and cared for with 'kid-gloves' and he, in turn, enjoyed every minute of his short stay there. A special thanks to everyone there for being so kind to him. Rannie was educated in Sydney and worked for 45 years at Sydney Steel Corporation as a machinist. In his youth, Rannie took part in many team sports, long-distance running, and local marathons. He loved to skate at the Pier Rink and outdoors at Walker’s Pond, and took part in many polar bear swims into his 90s. He was a faithful member of Holy Redeemer parish. Rannie enjoyed music and dancing, followed world affairs, and enjoyed nature and the outdoors in general. He was a man of his word, where his handshake was an iron-clad bond; he kept his loyalty to his family roots in the Meadows, Sydney Forks, and his neighbours in Whitney Pier. Rannie was married to the former Regina MacNeil. He loved to travel in his younger days, and he and Regina visited many places together. Following her death, he and his sister-in-law Lena became like brother and sister. They spend a lot of time at each other’s houses. Rannie enjoyed his little “picnic outings” in the summer with Lena and Anne MacKinnon. Many places around Cape Breton Island were visited, and Rannie always had to walk the beach, and always felt at home in the countryside. Rannie loved to garden; you could always find him puttering around outside. Having had many in his days, cars were another of Rannie’s prized possessions. He stopped driving when he was 101. He enjoyed going to boxing matches, horse races, local musical productions, baseball games and drives. He was happiest when he was either working on a mechanical problem, or working around one of the many GM cars he had over the years. Rannie was determined to learn the computer, and learn he did! He got his computer when he was 95. Prior to getting it, he spent hours at the library reading and getting books about computers. With a little help from Anne, he was able to spend countless hours on the computer, doing what he enjoyed most: reading emails and looking up information. He used the computer until he was 101. When not on the computer (or resting) he was an avid reader and a big fan of TV, especially the history and discovery channels. He kept up with everything going on in the world; reading the Cape Breton Post cover to cover. When his friends arranged his 100th birthday party, Rannie thought he died and went to heaven. He enjoyed every minute of it, and talked about it for ages. When Lena was stricken with the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease and ended up in Seaview Manor in 2014, Rannie seemed to have lost interest in things. He certainly enjoyed his many visits to see her with Anne and Eunice MacKinnon. He always wanted to get there in time for afternoon tea, which he always said was the “best cup of tea” he ever had. Rannie was grateful for everything you did for him. Meals on Wheels was a great service to him, as well as Continuing Care, VON, and especially the staff of 3A and 5E at the CBRH. He always said the secret to a long life was not to worry, and he never did. He was a great man: gentle, generous, keen sense of humour, joyful outlook on life, and a positive, friendly manner. Rannie enjoyed the company of his friends who came regularly to visit: Dennis, Pius, Ray, Blair, Eunice, and Anne. He may have been a quiet person, but he had a big grin that would warm your heart. Rannie is survived by his sister-in-law Lena MacNeil, Glace Bay, his nephew Daniel Gillis, U.S.A., and by a number of cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Regina (MacNeil) and two brothers, Edward and Joseph. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Mullaly. A funeral service will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel at 2 pm on Wednesday, March 11 with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Friends can gather one hour before the service at 1 p.m.; and are also invited to enjoy lunch following the service. Donations may be made to Holy Redeemer Parish. Online condolences to twcurry.com <http://twcurry.com/>. Rannie may have been blessed to have a long life, but we who knew him were blessed to have had him in our lives. Rest in Peace, Rannie!
