He died Sunday at his home in the Highland Villa of Inverary Manor in Inverness, just a couple of weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday. He’s being remembered by many across Cape Breton and beyond, including Gaelic College CEO Rodney MacDonald, himself a renowned step dancer and fiddler. MacDonald played a strathspey for Fraser at his 100th birthday celebration earlier this month and said it was great to catch up with a man he’s known and respected his entire life. “I thought the world of him,” said MacDonald. “Willie was definitely one of my favourite dancers. He was a bit of a legend in the dancing world. Many young dancers respected his quality of dancing and his demeanour. He had a certain respect for the traditional style of dancing, which is something I deeply respected.” MacDonald said Fraser’s knowledge of the music and his dancing style is something that generations of island musicians and dancers have tried to emulate. “He respected the music so much,” he said. “In stature he was impressive and his steps — they were neat, close to the floor, traditional by nature, and the timing was perfect.” MacDonald, who learned the Scotch Four from Fraser at his Willie Fraser celebrated his 100th birthday at Inverary Manor in Inverness earlier this month surrounded by family, friends and fans. The widely respected step dancer and Gaelic singer and speaker died Sunday. home, said Fraser was very generous with his time, both as a performer at community events, dances and picnics, and as a teacher of dance and Gaelic song. MacDonald noted that his own grandfather and Fraser were good friends. “Willie would often talk to me about my grandfather, Donald Angus Beaton. They had a great friendship through the music and that friendship ended up carrying forward into my grandfather making a tune for him called ‘ Willie Fraser’s Strathspey,’” he said. “It’s a tune that’s been recorded many times, and in fact, on Sunday night I was driving to Halifax with my wife and we were listening to the radio and on The Hawk radio station, on Bob MacEachern’s program, I was listening to ‘ Willie Fraser’s Strathspey.’” Fraser was recognized for his contributions to Scottish culture on numerous occasions in recent years, including by the Broad Cove Concert in 1991, by the lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia in 2005 and by the Celtic Colours International Festival in 2007. He was also the featured in several BBC documentaries and appeared in the video “The Dancer’s Dream,” which was produced for the archives at the Beaton Institute at Cape Breton University. Fraser is survived by 12 children, 25 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Kay. Visitation will be held at the Inverness Funeral Home on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will take place Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Broad Cove. ***** In Memory of William Francis Fraser March 5, 1915 - March 22, 2015 Surrounded by his loving family, it is with humble hearts that we, the family of William (Willie) Francis Fraser (100 years) announce his peaceful passing at his home in the Highland Villa of the Inverary Manor, Inverness, on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Born at St. Rose, Cape Breton, on March 5,1915, Willie was the son of the late Simon Fraser and Mary Isabel (MacKinnon) Fraser. Willie is survived by his twelve children Roddie (Docile), Port Hawkesbury; Maureen (Larry) Doyle, Earnscliff, P.E.I.; Billy, Deepdale; Clare (Cameron) MacQuarrie, Inverside; A.R. (Claire), Inverness; Wayne (Marlow), Winnipeg, MB; Gary (Lucy), Deepdale; Eugene (Sandra) Inverness; Doug (Carrie), Deepdale; Eric, Dartmouth; Kathleen, Aurora, ON; Gerald, Halifax. Also survived by twenty-five grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. Willie was predeceased by his loving wife Kathleen 'Kay' (MacNeil) Fraser and by his brothers John Joe (Jack), Angus, Joe Archie and Neil; his sisters Theresa, Mary Anne, Annie Sarah, Cassie and Margaret (Stark). Willie's heart was clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and a timely sense of humor. His love of his family, music, dance, the Gaelic language and song transcended generations and oceans. At the young age of 82 Willie was asked to bring back to his ancestral home (Scotland) his 'close to the floor' traditional style of step dancing which he learned at the knee of his father, grandmother, and dream teacher. Willie was recognized for his contribution to the Scottish Culture by: The Broad Cove Concert, 1991; Fàilte gu Ceòlas, traditional music school in South Uist, Scotland, 1996; Inverness Centennial Committee, 2004; Her Honour the Honourable Myra A. Freeman, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, 2005; the Celtic Colours International Festival, 2007. Willie has been interviewed by numerous members of the media and researchers including several BBC documentaries chronicling his life as a standard bearer of the Scottish Culture in Cape Breton. In all things he held his trust in God with all his heart. To the world, Willie was a Gaelic speaker, a Gaelic singer, and an exceptional step dancer as documented in the video 'God Bless Your Feet'. Willie was a community man, a good neighbor, and friend and always valued an honest day's work. Willie worked on the land, on the sea, underground and in the forest. Willie often remarked, "he was never out of work". This was due to his resourceful nature. Willie gave freely of his talents dancing at community and church picnics supporting worthy causes. In his home there was always "room for one more" at his kitchen table of plenty. Many friendly games of Auction and 45's were played at that same table. But the temperature did rise occasionally on Saturdays during Hockey Night in Canada when Willie's Habs would 'face off' against Kay's Leafs but this was mainly due to the wood stove. Willie said he would reach his 100-year and as expected he achieved his dream(s). Willie lived his life by a simple rule," do not judge others, so that you may not be judged". Willie lived a faith filled joyous life and was loved by all who had the privilege of his friendship. Visitation will be held at the Inverness Funeral Home on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 7pm to 9pm; Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm with Funeral mass to follow on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 11am at the St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Broad Cove, Cape Breton with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Donations in Dad's memory may be made to the Inverary Manor or the Broad Cove Concert Stage. He was born in New Waterford on Jan. 21, 1922, son of the late Tom & Catherine (Andrews) Marsh. Rarely does a nickname fit so well, with its suggestion of strength, energy and courage. Bull was a tremendous athlete; he played baseball, hockey, basketball, rugby and gave nothing less than 110% each and every time. His baseball talent took him to Kentville. He was the hard hitting catcher with a great throwing arm for the Kentville Wildcats of the Central League. The summer of 1947 was the beginning of the importation of American born baseball players in Kentville. Legendary imports such as Soc Bobotas, Hal Burby, Johnnie Watterson, Emil Krupa, Bruce Blount and future major league hurler, Art Ceccarelli were in the Wildcats lineup. Eddie Gillis, Leo Fahey, Joe Cormier, Jimmy Morrison and Bill Marsh each a Cape Breton luminary, were among the other stars. Bill was part of the first Maritime Midget Basketball Team. He played defense for the 1946/47 New Waterford Strands Senior Hockey Team. The degree of excellence that was shown by these gifted individuals was mind blowing. They beat the Sydney Millionaires in the championship game after 93 minutes of overtime. This game was played on an outside rink. Bill played on numerous other teams. He was also a great coach; and coached at many levels, from little league, to senior baseball. Bill also was involved in umpiring in the Cape Breton League. Bill grew up in New Waterford and, after four years in the navy during World War Two, went to work in New Waterford's No. 12 Colliery, then transferred to No. 16, where he began his ascendancy in the United Mine Workers of America. In 1958 he was elected President of District 26. He held that position for 22 years. He then became head of the Coal Council of Canada. Bill also served on Advisory Board for Research and Development at Queen's University, UCCB Board of Governors, Board of the Atlantic Foundation for Occupational Health & Safety, National Parole Board and Ports Canada. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree from UCCB. He had an amazing talent as a speaker. Bull Marsh had a magical mouth powered by a vigorous mind. He could read the times and would roar into action. In his leisure time, you would find him fishing, hunting or training his labrador retrievers. His love for those dogs was second to none. He had the first ever field trial champion in Cape Breton. Bill is survived by his son, Bill (Anna) Marsh; his daughters, Valerie Lafitte, Brenda (Jack) Marsh, Ramona (James) Marsh, and Roberta (Dan) Head and his brother, Karl Marsh. His grandchildren, Alanna (James) Marsh, Bill (Corina) Marsh, Samson Doyle, Vanessa (Tom) Pierson, Brandie McMullin, Rick (Angela) Haley, Ryan Haley, Tom (Terra) Pastuck, Tyler Pastuck, Chris (Jessie) Head, Gillian Head. His great-grandchildren, Connor & Auvney Marsh, Taylor & Avery Haley, Hayden, Brea & Kadience Pastuck and Carter McMullin and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his wife, Sadie; his daughter, Debbie Pastuck and son-in-law, John LaFitte. Bill was also preceded by his sisters, Eileen McIssac, Stella Muise and his brother, Jerry Marsh. Cremation has taken place. A visitation with the family will take place on Thursday, March 26 from 6-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at Parish of Saint Leonard on Friday, March 27 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Joe Gillis officiating. A reception will follow after at Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500. Donations can be made in Bill’s name to the Palliative Care Association. To send online condolences go to: www.mclellanfuneralhome.com <http://www.mclellanfuneralhome.com/>. A special thanks to his caregivers, Evelyn Guyea, Shelly, Chelsie & Kelly Jeremias. He loved you all very much. Thanks to City Homemakers, VON & Palliative Care for their help in his day-to-day needs. We really do appreciate every gesture of kindness that has been shown to him. Thank you just doesn't seem adequate for all the acts of kindness shown to our family! He is Gone You can shed tears that he is gone, Or you can smile because he lived, You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back, Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him Or you can be full of the love that you shared, You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him and only that he is gone Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on, You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Our blue-eyed angel left us peacefully on the morning of Sunday, March 22nd, 2015 at the age of 76. Born on December 10th, 1938, in Inverness, she was a daughter of the late Ronald Leddy (otherwise known as Boss) and Italia Frances Vataline (Tubetti) MacDonald. Gina is survived by her son Angus Ronald, Port Hood; her three daughters Mary Noelle (Milo), Bedford; Denise Maureen (Todd), Port Hawkesbury; and Jennifer Sarah, Port Hood; grandchildren Cameron, Anna, Luke, Niko, JJ and Alexander and many nieces and nephews; sister Maureen (John) Cameron, British Columbia and brothers Ronald (Carol) MacDonald, Woodstock, N.B.; Daryl (Alice) MacDonald, New Waterford, N.S.; and Frank (Anne Louise) MacDonald, Antigonish, N.S. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald Joseph (Josie) (1998). Gina was a hairdresser and spent many years working in her shop set up in her home, making her customers look and feel beautiful. Raising her children was her top priority in life and having her shop at home allowed her to have the best of both worlds. Many times when you walked into our family home, you would be welcomed by the smell of fresh homemade bread because our dad would never settle for anything less than the best. Cookie tins would always be filled with homemade goodies made with love for her children and grandchildren and anyone who decided to pop in for a visit or a laughter-filled game of cards. In the fall, the smells of pickling beets, green tomato chow, beans and carrots would take over to help preserve the hard work of the bountiful garden our family grew. Mom enjoyed skating and long walks and even after her first leg amputation her determination showed through as she continued to enjoy her walks, even though they were shorter and not as frequent. After her second amputation several years later, walking was no longer possible but she continued to enjoy singing. She was a member of the church choir for many years, an activity she truly enjoyed and treasured, and we were all blessed to hear that lovely voice on many occasions. We have many great memories of our mom but the best memory of her will be her loving, kind, gentle and selfless soul. Gina’s family will receive friends at the Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Wednesday, March 25th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., with funeral service being held on Thursday, March 26th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, Port Hood. Fr. Vincent vanZutphen will officiate. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Inverary Manor, Inverness or to St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Port Hood. Online condolences may be made to www.invernessfuneralhome.com. TIMMONS Molly Margaret Patricia (Poirier) Timmons daughter of the late Sandy and Maggie (Cormier) Poirier, passed peacefully on March 20th, 2015 in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness. She was a loving wife to James (Buddy) for 58 years. She is predeceased by daughter Marlene; son Ernest (in infancy); brothers Ernest and Simon and sister Lillian (in infancy). With an open heart and open arms all found a warm welcome into her home; creating a second home to many of her children's friends, expanding her family unit tenfold. Throughout the years her interests included bowling – real and digital – bingo, cards with her friends, and spending time with her family, although most will remember her for legendary and often sought waffles. With a growing family of her own she was known to host many a gathering to welcome a new bundle of joy or joining of two hearts. Demonstrating a little love can go a long way. Many will have their own memories, kind words, or favourite stories, all of which will be treasured to those that knew her. Visitation will be held in Inverness Funeral Home on Thursday, March 26th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 28th at 11:00 a.m. in Stella Maris Church, with Fr. She was a loyal member of the Catholic church and took great comfort in embracing her faith. She was an active volunteer for the Cancer Agency and Food Bank. Throughout her life, Phyllis enriched the lives of others with her generous heart. She was a devoted and loving mother, proud of her family and was delighted to become a great-grandmother. Her greatest passion in life was spending time with her family and friends. Always on the move, she was known as the roadrunner of the family. She loved playing games with her closest friends who were dear to her heart. Her radiant smile was contagious, making friends with total strangers and providing joy to those she loved. She taught us how to live life fully, passionately, bravely and courageously, just like she lived hers. She could see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late Ron (Bomber) Andrea. She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother, Harry and siblings, Vince, Morgan and George. She leaves her beloved memories to be cherished by her daughters, Patricia Andrea, Lesley (David) Newman, Linelle (Derek) Muirhead; her grandchildren, Lindsay (David Zarchikoff) Andrea, Jacob Newman and Ben Muirhead along with her great-grandchild, Max Zarchikoff; her only sister, Monica (Rob) Robertson and her brother, Dan (Judy) Whalen, fond nieces, nephews, and many loving relatives and friends. With how many lives she has enriched through her gentle way, she will forever live on in our hearts. A mass will take place at 9 a.m. on March 27, 2015 at Star of the Sea Church, 1153 Fir St., White Rock, B.C. A reception will follow at Rosemary Heights Retirement Home, 15240 34th Ave., Surrey, B.C. Born in the picturesque community of Ingonish in 1921 to Rupert and Elizabeth (MacIntosh) Curtis. Daisy dedicated her life to the care of her family and others. Always working hard and forging new roads Daisy started her early career selling Avon and Fuller Brush, then tried her hand at running canteens including two wonder filled summers in Mira at Spains Pavillion, the famous dance hall that featured live bands and a drive up canteen. Mom always reached out to care for others filling our home with extended family or friends as well as animals and lost children, anyone who needed a home. To this day we still have one of these residents Pat Penny — who has been with us for over 23 years and is considered part of the family. She was so successful she opened two other homes for those she felt needed one. Mom took in seniors and able bodied mentally challenged persons. These people became our family and I am sure they are greeting Mom with a big thank you in heaven. To the very end Mom worried and cared about her children. Now she is free from this worry and free to live a new life with her family and friends in heaven without tears or pain. She will be remembered for her amazing spirit and heart which lives on in her children, Betty (Mike) MacAdam, Ontario; Deanna (Peter MacKenzie) Sampson, Sydney; Donna (Paul) McPherson, New Brunswick; Pat (Alex) MacKinnon, Sydney; Donnie (Sue) Steele, Sydney; Bernie (Patricia) Steele, Sydney; Mary (Kenneth) Crocket, Halifax. He was blessed to have some of his family at his side at the time. Dad was born to the late Rosario and Secondina DiPersio and spent his early years in Sydney Mines. He served his country in the air force during the Second World War, after which he married our Mom, “Lillian Julian” and started our family before moving to Toronto. It wasn’t too long before Mom and Dad both realized that their hearts were in Cape Breton so they packed up the car and headed back to where most of us (the children) spent a great deal of our childhood and adolescent years, North Sydney. Dad worked at many different jobs over the years after returning home. Raising a family with eight children was no easy task in those days. Dad had a successful working career and was able to retire early from the general manager’s position at Ideal Ice Cream Company in Sydney. After his retirement he and mom had a house built in Sarasota, Florida, packed the car and a trailer and with the four youngest siblings headed off to start another new and exciting adventure in their lives. They spent many good years in Florida and only returned to North Sydney when Mom’s health began to fail. This was the first winter in a very long time Dad didn’t get back to Florida for a visit. Dad was deeply rooted in his faith, he was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Knights of Columbus and President of the Sydney Mines Curling Club. He also enjoyed a game of Tarabish or bridge and he amazed us with how well he would do when he played them on his computer. He also enjoyed just getting behind the wheel of his Jeep to go for a drive! Our Dad was the kind of person who could walk into a room and you could feel the energy change. His personality was such that he could keep people laughing and smiling and wondering what he would say next. He spoke and people listened. He didn’t demand respect, he earned it. Dad is survived by his eight children, Greg (Shirley) DiPersio, Sydney, Diane (Greg) Nickerson, Okotoks, AB, Merino (Linda) DiPersio, North Sydney, Jim (Davina) DiPersio, Pugwash, Valerie (Danny) Smith, Sarasota, Michael (Angela) DiPersio, Salem, Wisconsin, Ron (Beth) DiPersio, Antioch, Illinois, Pat (Diane) DiPersio, Lindenhurst, Illinois, his 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Bruno (Rose) DiPersio, Barra Head, NS, Hector (Rebecca) DiPersio, Sydney Mines, his sisters Doreen Latwaitis, Sydney Mines, Ida Lyle, Sydney Mines and Sister Anne DiPersio, Halifax, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Lillian (Julian) DiPersio, his brothers Merino and Hank DiPersio, his sister Mary Latwaitis and his grandson Derek DiPersio. Visitation for Pat will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Archibald Avenue, North Sydney with Rev. Francis Cameron officiating. GILLIS It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our precious, gentle, loving mother, Mary Emma Gillis on Wednesday, March 11th, 2015 at home in Broad Cove, Inverness County, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 93 years. Born in Dunvegan, Inverness County, on May 10th, 1921, she was the daughter of Angus A. and Mary Ann (Kennedy) Gillis and last surviving member of her immediate family. Mary Emma was a fluent Gaelic speaker, as this was her first language. She was recorded by a number of language academics and broadcasters from Canada, Scotland and Ireland. As a young woman she and her lifelong best friend Mary Margaret went off to Boston to work for a while. When she returned she married Angus Gillis and together they worked very hard on their self-sufficient farm on the side of a beautiful mountain in Broad Cove. As a result of lots of practice she became quite popular amongst her relatives and friends for her excellent homemade cheese and butter. Mom always loved to have visitors, listen to Cape Breton fiddle music and Gaelic songs, she enjoyed many a good song from her son-in-law Joe. She had many other interests but most of all she looked forward to the annual Broad Cove Concert each July. She just loved that weekend. She had a strong Catholic faith which directed her daily life and she served as a volunteer at St. Margaret’s Parish office in the past. She was a humble, honest person who possessed that inner strength and wisdom which so many people of her generation have. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her loving husband Angus Gillis, her only sister Catherine Jessie MacLellan and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Broad Cove), Ronelda (Dartmouth),Cathy Murphy (Joe), Dartmouth; son Angus Robert (Broad Cove) and was proud grandmother to Mary-Emma Murphy and Ruari Murphy. Raymond was born in Inverness on March 28th, 1931, and was a son of the late Dan Archie and Margaret (MacQuarrie) MacKinnon. Raymond was a member of Stella Maris Parish, Inverness and was a devoted husband of 59 years and is survived by his wife Rose (Walker), children Danny (Kay), Raymond Jr., Walker, and Jackson all of Inverness. He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather to Tyron, Frankie, Danny, Travis, Ricky, Rebecca, Emily Rose, Brady, Tessa, Rossi, Kiersten, Alyssa, Lila and Callie. He is also survived by his sisters Jenny Flint, Saskatoon; Alice Walker, Montreal; brother Sterling MacKinnon, Inverness. He was predeceased by his brothers Alexander, Earl, Lawrence, Jordon; sisters Jessie Catherine Sauve, Doris Hendricks, Laura (Lola) Lyeness, Mabel MacKinnon and Mayella MacKinnon. Raymond spent most of his life in Inverness with the exception of a few years in the ‘50s where he worked in Toronto. He and Rose married on October 15th, 1955 in Toronto and soon returned home to raise their family. Raymond fished lobster out of the Inverness Harbour for many years and worked for the Department of Transportation until retirement. His home was always warm and welcoming to family and friends and he was quick to put the kettle on when you entered and share some home baked goodies. He loved sitting out on the deck, chatting with family, friends and neighbours, watching the ocean and sunsets from his "chair," where he would also spend Saturday evenings cheering his Habs on. He looked forward to his daily trip up the road to join his buddies at Bernie’s for a good card game and could often be found around the wharf waiting for his boys to arrive safely back at the harbour. His presence will be missed at the Inverness Raceway where he enjoyed many evenings and afternoons in the winners circle as an owner and fan. An old town favourite, Battle Gun, was owned and trained by Raymond in the ‘70s. In recent years he travelled throughout the racing circuit in the Maritimes watching and cheering on the Inverness horses. Raymond lived life to the fullest, had lots of friends and a family he treasured. "Papa Skinny" not only to his grandkids but to many, will always be remembered in our hearts and we will always have a smile when we think of our great memories of a fine man. Friends and family are invited to share their condolences with Raymond's family in Stella Maris Church, Inverness on Friday March 20th from 10:00-10:45 a.m. with funeral mass to follow at 11:00 a.m., Fr.
