She passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13th, 2015, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital with her loving family at her side. Norma was born on March 1st, 1926 in Inverness Hospital. She was predeceased by her parents Annie Bell Cameron and William Myers; her husband Donnie of 52 years; her son Brenton, at age four; her special sister-in-law and pen pal Shirley Myers and brothers-in-law Owen Underwood and Ray Strickland. She is survived by her brother George Myers, Dartmouth; sisters Rita Underwood, London, Ontario and Gertie Strickland, Brampton, Ontario; children Bill (Natalie), Red Deer, Alberta; Gordon (Chlory), Inverness; Harold (Florence), Inverness; Lorraine (Glenn) Kelly, Lucan, Ontario; Brian (Madeline), George (Joanne), Donna (Keith) Doucet, all of Inverness; Darlene (Eldon) Sutherland, Port Hood; Lauchie (Brenda), Carlsbad Springs, Ontario; Carol (Neil) Ingraham, Lower Sackville; Gary, Ontario and her special girl Shirley, at home. She took on the role of a mother at a very young age with the passing of her own mother on Port Hood Island. From the age of 12 she assisted her father in raising her younger siblings. After her marriage to Donnie, her greatest joy was becoming a mother to 13 children of her own as her family grew to include 25 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was overjoyed to receive the news of another great-grandchild on the way just days before her passing. Norma created a welcoming home not only for her own family but for many friends, neighbors and acquaintances. She always went out of her way to make you feel special. As a homemaker, her brown sugar squares, bread and biscuits have yet to be replicated despite best efforts by many family members. She was happiest with a kitchen full of conversation, laughter and always took the time to sit and talk whether with visitors or for cherished phone calls from loved ones near and far. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion, as reflected in her journal writing. In the last days of her life these journals became a source of comfort as we came to terms with having to say goodbye. Her reflection on life, devotion to God and strong faith are a beautiful legacy for us, her family. She felt she lived a rich life, always seeing the good in everyone and everything, never asking for more than she needed. She always knew to count her blessings and to never take anyone or anything for granted. Her warm heart was also seen in the way she appreciated nature and treated animals. We have many great memories but the best memory of her will be her loving, kind, gentle and selfless soul. Norma was blessed to be able to remain in the family home with Shirley due to the loving support of her family, especially George and Joanne. Visitation was held on Friday, April 17th in Inverness Funeral Home. Funeral service was held on Saturday, April 18th in St. Matthew's United Church, Inverness with Pastor Maggie Plant celebrating. While still in school, Frank met the beautiful and quite posh, Miss Elsie Dettmer, at the Orange Tree Pub in north London. Weeks later, they met again, miles away, a world away, in south London. During that serendipitous and highly unlikely second meeting, Elsie quipped, "I guess we’ll just have to get married." Her words proved prophetic. Frank and Elsie were married in May of 1958 and following the birth of their first daughter, Lucy, in January of 1963, they boldly immigrated to Canada. Settling in Windsor, Ont., and practising in both Windsor and Detroit, Frank returned to school and earned a fellowship in Radiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Windsor, in its bustling days of automobile production, became their first real home in Canada and saw Frank and Elsie develop deep friendships that would last a lifetime. Windsor also saw the birth of two more daughters, Stephanie in 1968 and Emily in 1974. Frank and Elsie, now three daughters strong, made another bold move to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and raised their young family in Sydney where Frank continued his parent’s legacy of instilling in his children, the joy and necessity of learning. For nearly 30 years, Frank worked long, hard hours as a radiologist, lending his expertise to several area hospitals including Sydney City, St. Rita’s, Glace Bay and the Cape Breton Regional. He is remembered by his patients and colleagues for his dedication, kindness, warmth and humanity. However, his greatest joys in life were his family. He loved family dinners, camping, nature, gourmet cooking, wine, Shakespeare, travel, learning other languages, classical music and art. Frank and Elsie retired in September of 2000 and moved to Dartmouth, N.S. to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. He spent his retirement with his loving family, travelled extensively, and could often be found in their sun-filled home on the lake, standing in front of his stereo, “air” conducting the symphony who dared not follow his command. Frank adored his grandchildren and kept his silly side alive and well, turning at unexpected moments into the dreaded rubber-boot-eating-toy-stealing-tickle monster. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Elsie in 2012. After a brief and unexpected illness, Francis Patrick Crowe died peacefully in the presence of his three daughters, surrounded by their love and listening to Mozart. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital for their skill, warmth and kindness. He is survived by his daughters Dr. Lucy Lamond (husband Cameron), Mrs. Stephanie Baker (husband Christopher) and Dr. Emily Crowe (husband Joseph O’Neill); by grandchildren Fiona, Charlotte and Max Baker, Grace and Maria Lamond and Eva O’Neill; his sister Jean Dinneen (husband Dave); and niece Sarah Jane. He leaves behind his Grand-Dogs, Fergus, Kittie and Kevin. He was loved by all. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m. at Saint John XXIII Church, 35 Colby Dr., Dartmouth. Interment immediately afterward at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, 767 Main St., Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Frank’s memory to a charity close to your heart would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth Chapel, 771 Main St, Dartmouth. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com <http://www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com/> – Dartmouth Chapel. Sadie Muriel Favaro Born In: Donkin Passed in: Donkin Passed on: April 14th, 2015 It is with great sadness, that we, the family, announce the passing of our loving mother, aunt and friend, Sadie Muriel Favaro, age 87. Sadie passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at the Glace Bay Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born in Donkin, she was the daughter of the late Archibald and Margaret (Prosper) Corbin, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mom was a true homemaker, a job she cherished; she enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting, spending time with her loving family and going to bingo games with her lady friends. In 1959, mom, dad and children moved from Donkin to New Jersey, where we resided until 1973; while there, mom was employed as a clerk at a local grocery store. Upon returning to Donkin, mom was the major caregiver for her ailing mother while she lived in her home. Years later when her mother resided at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, mom visited her daily; she was so well known by the staff at Victoria Haven she accepted a job in their kitchen, where she worked until her retirement. She will be sadly missed by her loving children, daughter Florence Wendy Favaro, Donkin; son John Anthony 'Tony' (Nancy) Favaro, Sydney. She will also be sadly missed by several nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, Mom was also predeceased by her loving husband, John Anthony Favaro (1994), sister Vera Nearing, brothers, Tom, Gerald and Cyril in infancy. Visitation for Sadie will be held tomorrow, Friday, April 17, 2015, from 1 pm. until the time of service at 2 pm. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service. Interment will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Black Brook. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation in Mom’s memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society, or to a charity of one’s choice. At this time we would like to thank the doctors and the nursing staffs on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Glace Bay Hospital for the care and compassion shown to our mother. Online condolences to the Favaro family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca Dr. Francis 'Frank' Crowe Born: March 11th, 1935 Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: April 14th, 2015 Born in London, England to Irish immigrant parents, Tommy and Betty Crowe, Frank and his sister, Jean, were raised in the London area of 'County' Kilburn. Frank was encouraged by his parents who believed that education was the key to freedom and happiness. If his parents believed in the value of education, young Frank delivered in spades. He attended the Royal London Hospital Medical School. On graduating, Dr. Crowe was presented his degree by HRH, the Queen Mother. Furthering his education, he earned diplomas in both anesthesiology and obstetrics. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com – Dartmouth Chapel.
