Cape Breton Post May 02, 2015 Saturday SHARON MONTGOMERY-DUPE [email protected] Business icon Agnes Inch dies ‘It’s another good person gone’ The death of a local business icon has touched many hearts in the community. Agnes Inch, who opened the original Jays Restaurant with her husband Jimmy in 1967, died on Wednesday, at age 92. “It’s sad, disappointing to hear another icon is gone from the business districts,” said Cecil Saccary, chair of the Glace Bay and Area Business Association. “It’s another good person gone.” Saccary said Inch is remembered for so many positive things, but especially her kindness to children. “She always seemed to have time for children and was sensitive to what they were doing,” he said. “If a child went in for a box of fries and was 5 or 10 cents short she’d say, ‘ That’s all right, you have enough,’ and would give them the fries. She always made sure no kid got singled out in front of the other kids.” He said the Inchs maintained the reputation behind the business so their own children could takeover and be successful. “That’s the other side of maintaining a good reputation and they’ve succeeded in doing that,” Saccary said. “They‘ ve been around for a long, long time and have been excellent anchors in the community.” Agnes Inch was a native of Scotland. She and Jimmy, who was stationed in the U.K. during the Second World War, opened the original Jays on Marconi Street before moving to a larger location on Commercial Street and then in 1972 to the current location on South Street Jimmy Inch retired in 1987, a few years after Agnes had retired. Son John Inch described his mother as prominent in the community and always involved in a lot of charity work. “She was a very gracious lady,” but above all, she was, “a great mom. My brother and I were very lucky to have her as our mother.” He said her focus later in life became her grandchildren, then her great-grandchildren and most recently, a greatgreatgrand child. John said the businesses has always remained in the Inch family. After his father retired, his sister-inlaw purchased the business. John was teaching in Japan and after retiring, returned to Glace Bay. “My sister-in-law wanted to sell it and retire and I decided I didn’t want to retire after all so I bought it in 2006.” In about 2006, Agnes moved to Ontario to be near her other son, Jim Jr. She lived for a few years in an assisted living home before moving to a nursing home. “She loved it, there were so many activities and she made so many friends there, a few from the Maritimes and even Scotland so she was able to practice her Scottish brogue. She was treated with the upmost respect, would go around with her walker for card games and other activities.” Agnes was a member of the Cape Breton War Brides Association, was active in the Glace Bay General Hospital Auxiliary and the Savoy Theatre and she sang in the Knox United Church choir for many years. In her early years, she was active in the Kinette Club and the Red Cross. Agnes was predeceased by her husband Jimmy in 1987. <> A memorial service for Agnes Inch will be held in Glace Bay at a later date.

Known for his love of muscle cars, having a laugh with friends and commitment to his family, Ernie will be forever missed by those lucky enough to have made his company. Ernie’s clothing and cologne collection always made him the best dressed, best smelling man everywhere he traveled, including various deli departments on the Friday night quest for the “pink sticker” wings. There is no question that if you have spent any time with Ernie he has stressed the importance of staying active, eating healthy and starting your day with the coveted kale smoothie! Born in Sydney Mines to the late Pearl and Vincent Matthews, Ern spent his early years working hard and driving nice cars, which is how he met his best friend and soul mate Debbie. After charming her with his good looks and bowling skills, they married in 1979. Ern and Deb moved to Alder Point where his family life would begin. Ernie started his working career at Sydney Steel but, his quest to always be learning and developing new skills led to a move to New Glasgow and several successful careers thereafter. The most memorable employment included working alongside his old pal Steve “Venom" Green with OTS and finishing his career close to home with Northern Pulp. Proud father to two children, whom he taught everything he knows about detailing a car, home repair and the value of always working hard. Always quick to volunteer for various community committees, helping those less fortunate or snow clearing the driveway of everyone on the street. Ernie’s favourite hobbies include, impressing the young folk at the gym with his bench press, lunching with his favourite ladies, the fight for the perfect lawn, cheering and criticizing his beloved Yankees and spending an evening with his much adored wife and family. Left to carry on his wonderful memory are his most important treasures, his wife, best friend and loyal supporter of 36 years, Debbie, daughter, Lesley (Rob Graham), and son Ryan (Stephanie); siblings: Shirley, Ed (Nancy), Ethel (John), Martha (Ed), Rita (Neil), Alice, Carl and Ellen (Shawn); great lifelong friends, Richard and Pauline Carroll, Hudson and Loic Young who proudly referred to him as “Papa Ern”. He was preceded by his mother and father, niece Jo-Ellen Gillis and Azina and Leslie LeBlanc. Cancer may have taken him years before we were ready, but it never took his fight, his quick wit or love for family. Life will never be the same without you. The family would like to graciously thank every friend, neighbour, nurse, doctor, support worker who helped us in any way, words will never convey our appreciation for all that you have done. Marjorie Christine MacDonald Born In: Sydney Mines Born: May 29th, 1935 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: April 30th, 2015 With broken hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Marjorie Christine 'Sister' MacDonald, 79, of Sydney Mines, on Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Sydney Mines on May 29, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Bradley) Howell. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Sydney Mines. Mom was a quiet, compassionate, and very thankful person. She started at a young age, working as a nurses’ assistant at Harbour View Hospital in Sydney Mines. She met the love of her life, Edward MacDonald, her husband for 54 years, and raised five children. Throughout the years, Mom always loved a good game of Bingo, and had many Bingo buddies. They enjoyed each other’s company so much. Mom also worked for the Stella Maris Rest Home for several years. This was her passion; caring for the residents, as she did for her family. This would come full circle for our Mom, for the love and compassion came back to her from her close family at the Northside Guest Home. She couldn’t wait to get back there. She also got to spend a couple of years at the guest home with two of her sisters, whose company she really cherished. There is a void in my heart today. It is hard to find the words to say. I will miss our talks, our cups of tea, your love, your smile that encourage me, but most of all I’m going to miss you, Mom. Marjorie is survived by her sons, Edward (Brenda) and Dave (Kim); daughters, Carolyn, Colleen and Glenda. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren, Ed Jr. (Justine), Matthew, Daniel, DJ, Brandon, Christopher, Kim, Marjorie and Donald; great-grandchildren, Dwayne, Emily, Brooklyn, Edward, Cody and Aubree; brothers William, Gordon (Eleanor) and Kenny. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Ed MacDonald; brothers, James, Nick and Archie and sisters, Dolores, Lillian and Linda. Special thanks to Dr. O’Grady and Dr. Ritter, Catherine, the staff at 5 East, Northside General, Northside Home Care, all staff at the Northside Guest Home and the Miner’s Manor; for taking such care of our mother, and having such compassion for her – you truly are part of our family. Come share the memories and celebrate the life of Marjorie Christine MacDonald with her family on Sunday, May 3, 2015, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A Mass to celebrate her life will take place on Monday, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating. The burial will take place at a later date. Donations in Marjorie’s memory may be made to the Northside Palliative Care Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. A Mother’s love’s a blessing No matter where you roam Keep her while she’s living You’ll miss her when she’s gone Love her as in childhood Though feeble, old and grey For you’ll never miss a mother’s love ‘til she’s buried beneath the clay. Graham was born in Dominion at the start of the Great Depression in 1929. His mother, Genevieve, and his Great Uncle Rev. Charles W. MacDonald raised him in the heart of the coal mining communities of Bridgeport and Glace Bay. A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, he spent his early years as a teacher, journalist and broadcaster in Cape Breton. At the age of 28, he made his one and only attempt at elected office by running in the 1958 federal election as the Liberal party candidate in the riding of Antigonish -Guysborough. He lost by 931 votes to Progressive Conservative candidate Clement O’Leary. Graham became involved in the early days of the Cape Breton Development Corp. (DEVCO), a federal Crown corporation created in 1967 to phase out unviable coal mine operations and develop other industries on the island. It was during the federal Liberal leadership convention in 1968 that Vince MacLean met Graham for the first time. “I was a youngster in graduate school at UNB, and I went up to Ottawa where I met Al. He was one of those who encouraged me to be supporting Allan (MacEachen). And I did,” said MacLean in a telephone interview from his home in Northside East Bay. MacEachen dropped out of the race after the second ballot. Pierre Elliott Trudeau led each of the four ballots to the win. MacLean said Graham always seemed to have a “cheerful” down-to-earth personality. Four years later, Trudeau, now prime minister, appointed Graham to the Senate. He then went on to serve as president of the Liberal Party of Canada from 1975 to 1980. MacLean entered provincial politics in the early 1970s as a 25-year-old. He said Graham was pivotal in shaping his political profile during those formative years. “I was very young and there weren’t a lot of people who thought I should be there at the time, but Al was always a stalwart supporter.” In 1977, MacLean, now the provincial minister of Lands and Forests and Environment, was consumed by the spruce budworm crisis and the fate of millions of hectares of balsam fir and white spruce forests. The province decided against using pesticides but needed a comprehensive remediation program involving the support of the federal government. MacLean said it was Graham who was instrumental in bridging the communication divide between provincial officials and bureaucrats in four federal departments. “Al was quite helpful, as was Allan MacEachen, in bringing those four ministers on side so we were able to sign the largest forestry agreement in Canada up until that time,” he said. Graham would continue his work as a senator on various committees including sitting as chair of the secretive Board of Internal Economy from 1980 to 1984. Following the 1997 federal election where the Liberals were wiped off Nova Scotia’s political map, Chretien appointed Graham as regional minister. He also served as Government leader in the Senate. This changed in 1999 when he was replaced as Senate leader by another Cape Bretoner, former provincial Liberal finance minister Bernie Boudreau. A staunch defender of the Upper Chamber, in his farewell speech on March 24, 2004, Graham said the average Canadian often misunderstood the work of a senator. “… Let us never forget that senators work long hours to ensure that our laws are crafted to safeguard the peace, the security, the basic rights and freedoms of our talented people, no matter where they live, no matter what their circumstances,” he told his Senate colleagues. “We are here in this chamber to protect regional, provincial and minority interests. We are here to focus greater public attention on those people in society whose rights and interests are often overlooked — the young, the poor, the elderly, the dying, our veterans and our wonderful aboriginal friends.” In retirement, he travelled the world — South and Central America, Africa and Southeast Asia — as a member of election observing missions. He wrote a book based on his travels, “Seeds of Freedom: Personal Reflections on the Dawning of Democracy.” Premier Stephen McNeil paid tribute to Graham’s nearly 40 years of public and community service on Thursday. “He was passionate about our region and its people and he represented us with great distinction. That is an example we should all aspire to,” McNeil said. Graham is survived by his 10 children, 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wake will be held over the weekend, and his funeral is to take place Monday at St. Mary’s Basilica in Halifax.

Raised in the coal mining communities of Bridgeport, Dominion, and Glace Bay by his mother, Genevieve and Great Uncle, Fr. Charles W. MacDonald, Al possessed a down-to-earth Cape Breton sensibility, and had a gracious ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He saw beauty in everyone and treated all with dignity. He was a teacher, broadcaster, corporate executive and Senator. His professional life was dedicated to community service, and to levelling the playing field; economically, socially, and politically. He worked hard to give others a chance in life and believed in the ability of the “little guy” to affect change. His first love was his family. Al’s favourite moments were spent with his children and grandchildren – especially at the Mahoney’s Beach family cottage in Antigonish, where he was known to go shirtless from dusk ‘til dawn – regularly breaking the sound barrier with his distinctive laugh. To those closest to him, he was Dad, Grampi, Rock, and Big Al. His love of life, belief in a world of endless possibilities, and his desire to give back remained an inspiration to his children and grandchildren until the end. In his last days, he managed to hold and love us as much as he ever had. He was proud to have served his country in public office, and had many friends from coast to coast, particularly in Antigonish, Sydney, Halifax and Ottawa. Al was appointed to the Senate in 1972 by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was the President of the Liberal Party of Canada from 1975 to 1980, was Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate from 1995 to 1996, and served in Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s cabinet as Leader of the Government in the Senate from 1997 to 1999. He was a member of, or led, election observing missions on behalf of The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, in South and Central America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. He recorded these observations in the book “Seeds of Freedom; Personal Reflections on the Dawning of Democracy”. After retiring from the Senate, Al enjoyed one of his most meaningful lifetime responsibilities as the first National Patron and Ambassador for L’Arche Canada - an organization committed to inclusive communities for adults with special needs. In 1993, he received an Honourary Degree from his beloved alma mater, St. Francis Xavier University. Al is survived by his 10 children – Patricia, Alasdair (Margaret), Jack (Michelle Awad), David (Nancy Regan), Eileen Barrett (George), Bill (Leah), Danny (Lauren McCarville), Mary Hanington (Rob), Jeannie Wamboldt (Jeff) and Anne Marie (Paul Goyetche), 24 loving grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, and beloved family nanny, Marjorie Martindale. He was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years - Jean (MacDonald), his parents – Dr. Jack and Genevieve Graham, his two brothers - Charles and Fr. John, as well as his daughters-in-law - Norma Graham and Sheelagh Nolan. He will be deeply missed by his long-time companion, Elizabeth McIninch. We cannot adequately express our gratitude for the love, tenderness and compassion shown by the staff at Parkland at the Gardens, who treated him like family, as he did them. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25th from 2-4 p.m., and Sunday, April 26th from 2-4 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. in Halifax. Norman 'Jake' Noel Born: September 17th, 1920 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: April 20th, 2015 Norman Almon Noel (Jake) passed away on April 20, 2015 in Harbourview Hospital's Veterans' Wing. He was born in North Sydney on September 17, 1920, and spent several happy childhood years in Baddeck before moving back to North Sydney. Jake is survived by Ruth, his wife and soulmate of 65 years; daughters Cathy and Normi; grandchildren Brett, Gavin (Kristijana) and Carly (Michael). Also his dear small friends, Kippur and Kate Wicked. Jake was a bomber pilot in WWII, training initially on fighter planes but due to heavy losses in Bomber Command was transferred to 428 Squadron (Ghost Patrol), a bomber squadron based in Middleton St. George in the north of England. Flight Officer Lt.'Wimp' Noel flew 33 combat missions over Nazi Germany in his beloved Lancasters. Toward the end of his tour, he brought his crew home safely under a May Day landing; the aircraft was so badly shot up it never flew again. After Jake's tour ended he joined Transport Command (RAF), on Liberators, flying troops home from North Africa, the Middle East and India. Returning to North Sydney after the war, he had the good fortune to find his other half, Ruth MacDonald, his great love, his true north. For many years he owned and operated Bill's Hardware in Sydney Mines. Due to the closing of the mines, Jake, Ruth and family moved to Fort McMurray in 1967. There he worked for GCOS and Suncor, in both the Lab and Environmental Department, and Ruth taught school. In 1981 they retired to their home in Cape Breton. Jake loved golf and tennis and was a passionate gardener. A voracious reader, Jake loved rich discussion and lively exchange. His philosophy was shaped by a profound love and respect for animals and nature. Jake was pre-deceased by his parents, Blanche (Parsons) Noel and Heber Noel, and his twin sister Margaret (Noel) Allin. In his last years Jake was blessed in the companionship of dear and faithful friends, who cared for him so wisely and so well. Brenda, Sheila, Nina, Rosemary, and Mabel and many other wonderful caregivers cherished him and enabled him to stay in his home with Ruth until late February of this year, for which we are eternally thankful. We, his family, are grateful to so many people. Dr. Amanda Woodhouse; Dr. John Ritter and Cathy McMillan of Palliative Care; the compassionate staff of Harbourview Hospital; the exemplary VON; the wonderful team at Shopper's Drug Mart in North Sydney; County Homemakers (particularly his friend Marlin); the generosity of the Department of Veterans Affairs; and dear friend and Physiotherapist Ramnish Tewari. There will be no service, at his request. High Flight Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward , I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds – and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
