Dorothy Frances Rozeluk Born In: Whitney Pier Passed in: Berwick, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: June 3rd, 2015 Dorothy Frances Rozeluk passed away June 3, 2015, at the age of 84 after a three year courageous life with cancer. She faced her challenge as she lived; head on, with grace, tenacity & faith. She grew up in a vibrant Whitney Pier in Cape Breton. Leaving school to help support her family, she never lost her love of learning. Working at Woolworth's and then for decades at the Royal Bank, she completed her high school, her banking diplomas and her BBA; all while working full time, raising two daughters, helping those in need, & working to help out in Rozeluk's Grocery, the family business. She completed her banking career in loans and tells stories of giving loans to those who needed them, but whose only collateral was their promise to Dorothy not to default. Handing over the loan papers to her boss Mom would say "This one is from the heart." No one ever defaulted on their loan. That was mom, always the first and last to help, and always the first to cook, bake and nourish the masses. She was an incredible artist, singer, a devout Catholic - a member of Our Lady of Fatima & St Mary's Polish Church Choirs & CWL and recently St. Joseph's parish in Berwick. Moving to Berwick, during her illness, meant selling her home and leaving precious Cape Breton. Although difficult, she touched a whole new group of people in the Annapolis Valley. They too would experience the Love, Joy and Magic that is Dorothy. She will be welcomed in Heaven by her beloved husband, Michael; her mama & papa, Johanna ‘Anna’ (Piskorz) & Michael Ardelli and her 11 brothers & sisters: Zygmond, Peter, Minnie, Ann, Victor, Mary, Aggie, Elsie, Mike, John and Charlie and many friends and family. Those who remain: her daughters, Alexis (Grant), husband Danny, grandkids, Danielle & Charles and Jane (Rozeluk-Gagnon), husband Darrel Gagnon, grandkids, Glen & Anna, and all those who considered her mother, grandma, family and friend, will strive to continue her legacy of strength of character, love, kindness and family. Mom always said. "Promise me you will keep your family connections!" "We Promise!" Many, many thanks to those who cared for mom and us: The Cape Breton Palliative team, Dr Ridder, Jackie, Adele, Laurie & Theresa, Dr. Khodadad and all the members of the Cancer Center at CB Regional. The Valley Palliative Care team: Dr Burgess, Dr Birch, Jackie and Katrina. To the many members of the home VON Team. To Dr. Ago & the staff at the Cancer Center at the VG, and to Nurse Annie for your care. To Dr. Gena Dickson and Dr. Brian MacInnis for your loving, supportive and dignified care of our mom and us. To the Valley Regional Medical B staff: for your care, compassion and dignity. To dearest Chelsea for your loving, dignified and precious care you gave to mom and us. To our family and friends who helped & supported mom and us, Thank-you and God bless you! May angel’s wings carry you home dearest mama! You were the best mother! You live on in each of us. We will try to remember this: "Do not cry because it is over; Smile because it happened." No wake will be held, as per Dorothy's wishes. A memorial service is planned for the summer in Cape Breton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Mary's Polish Church rebuild fund at stmaryspolishchurch.ca <http://stmaryspolishchurch.ca/> or a charity of your choice. Mam passed on June 3, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Maggie Ellen (MacLean) and John Byrne. “A mother she was! To all of us,” including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always put her children first throughout her entire life, making sure we were provided with the essentials of life with love. She was unfortunate to be afflicted with dementia/Alzheimer’s disease, but even with her diagnosis 12 years ago, she was always ‘Mammie’ — kind, cheerful, pleasant, to all who encountered her. Always wanting to dance and sing and at the age of 87; she could still shake it with her friends at the manor. She loved to bake her ‘Christmas Sultana Cakes,’ and would give them to each of us, along with other baked goodies. Mam’s house was the meeting place for our Christmases and Sunday dinners. She loved to cook and clean, and gave what she had to us all. Everyone who encountered her loved her humour. She loved to tell a joke and have a good laugh. Mam will be sadly missed by her loving family, sons, Billy ( Janet), whom she lived with for several years prior to moving to Seaview Manor three years ago; Jimmy; Wayne; John (Carol); daughters, Sheila (Billy McNeil); Karen; sisters Josephine, Sara (Eddie) Lynk, Kay (Fred) King, Loie ( John) Stefura; and brother Michael Byrne; grandchildren, Libby, Rebecca, Derrick, Debra, Darryl (Lorinda), Kevin, Kyla, Willie, Shaun, Mark, Chad, Chantal, Mark, and Brandon. Darryl was her first grandson who was the apple of her eye. Great-grandchildren, Ashley, Nicole, Jordan, Rhiley, Isaiah, Nyia, Cameron, Bentley and great-great-grandson Cohen. She will also be missed by a special lifetime friend and neighbour Rose Hill. Mam and Rose spent their entire lives living side by side and were always there for each other. They had a friendship that only a book could describe. Daughters-inlaw Nicole and Laura were also her best friends, who provided her with care and attention always. Sisters in-law Gertrude French, Isabel Yates and Joan Wells. Many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation for Mam will be held today, Friday, June 5, 2015, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Cremation will follow. Donations in her memory may be made to Alzheimer Society, palliative care, or a charity of one’s choice. We were very grateful to have a special angel come our way, a friend of Mam’s, Tootsie (Barns) McGillivray. When Mam’s mind became restless and she wanted to go home, Tootsie would spend her days sitting and reminiscing about the olden days with her, settling her; Tootsie showed kindness, caring and most of all respect of Mam’s disease. Thank you Tootsie. Special thank you to Nennie, Loie, Carol Anne and Craig, who visited regularly, acknowledging her need for the constant family stimulation, she loved seeing them, many days she would call for ‘Josephine,’ and Nennie was just a phone call away — “I thank you guys so much.” Darlene, her niece, spent nights with her at home, making sure she was safe and comfortable. Darlene continued to visited Mam weekly at the nursing home, that brought her joy, to see a familiar face. Sheila, “what can I say”; you were there for Mam day and night seven days a week, and whenever I had something to attend to, you were there. Mam loved visiting Sheila’s; Billy McNeil, “Billy, I thank you for your kindness and understanding that you showed her, it meant a lot to her.” Jimmy, “what you did daily and sometimes twice a day visiting and walking Mam at the nursing home made her day.” A very special thank you to Seaveiw Manor; the greatest, biggest thank you to all who worked and cared for Mam. Every one of you are special gifted people. You showed caring, compassion, and most of all love to our Mother. There are too many to name all of you, but each of you know who you are. To nursing, maintenance, housekeepers, laundry, kitchen, recreation, physiotherapy departments — thank you! Thanks to Dr. Dias, Dr. Mark Ellerker, Dr. Asim, Dr. Ann Frances D’Intino. Mom was a stay-at-home parent who devoted herself to her seven children and her home. Ours was a welcoming home and we were counseled to invite in friends and playmates, and so we did with Mom greeting each and every youthful visitor with open arms and unbridled hospitality. She was the consummate provider, an accomplished homemaker and baker extraordinaire. Once her children realized their independence, Mom joined forces with a team of industrious women who were engaged by the Province of Nova Scotia in office cleaning. She applied herself to her work with unswerving resolve and boundless energy. Mom was also a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion. For many years, she gave tirelessly to the ladies auxiliary, where she forged lasting friendships and experienced endless hours of enjoyment. In 1993, after 48 years of marriage, she lost her loving husband, Alvin, companion and the father of her seven children. In 2002, Mom was blessed by finding true love a second time and she married Ewen that spring. To Mom, family was golden and in exchanging vows with Ewen, she welcomed eight stepchildren into her heart and family at the age 74. To good friend and caregiver, Carole Ludyka, we offer our enduring gratitude. Niece, Lois MacLean had a special place in mom’s heart and we are forever thankful for all that she did freely to enrich her life, bring her happiness, and elevate her spirit. BURTON Charles Graham Burton, age 96, of Margaree Valley, was called home to heaven on May 27th, 2015. Born May 13th, 1919 on Egypt Road, Charlie was the son of the late John and Cassie Burton. Growing up on the family farm alongside his brothers Roger, Douglas, Frank, Clarence and sister Dorothy, Charlie learned to live off the land at an early age. Courting at the Normaway Inn, Charlie married the love of his life, Kathryn, in 1943 and carried on the farming tradition, passing it along to his family. A hardworking man of integrity, Charlie provided for his family through a traditional life owning their dairy farm, and raising cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens. A proud accomplishment remembered by his children was their dad being the first in the area to own a combine and baler in 1952. He travelled across Cape Breton providing these services, with the machinery still in use today. His home was always open to family and friends. A stop at 10:00 or 3:00 would find Charlie surrounded by loved ones at his table, with the tea kettle filled and a spread of biscuits and its fixings. Maple syrup had a large part in Charlie’s life as early as placing wooden spiles and troughs in his youth to working Burton’s Maple alongside his son, Wesley. In his later years, Charlie enjoyed his time in the shop woodworking, making clocks, chairs, tables and train whistles to name a few, with many of these keepsakes now in his family’s homes. Staying true to nature, he loved tending his strawberries, raspberries, apple trees and vegetables. Serving the Lord with unwavering commitment, Charlie led his family by example and served his community and church family as an elder at the Margaree Valley Baptist Church. In recent years, Charlie was well cared for by many members of his family, home care, the staff at Cheticamp and Inverness Manors, and the Inverness hospital staff. He was predeceased by his wife Kathyrn, son Wesley, daughter-in-law Gloria and grandchildren Michael and Vanessa. Charlie is survived by a large and loving family including his children Lauchie (Cindy), Toronto; Earl (Wanda), Halifax; Martha (Elmer), Bruce (Arlene), John (Brenda), Conrad (Karen), all of the Margaree area and Corinna (Derek), Toronto. He prided himself in the love of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will always remember their Papa and Grampa. She is my mother” New Victoria - We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Cecilia (Bisson) McIntyre ’Spickie’, 88, at her home, on May 30, 2015. She died the way she lived, with grace and dignity. Cecilia (Bisson) McIntyre was born on April 20, 1927, in New Waterford, N.S., the eleventh child in a family of 13 children born to Sarah MacInnis (Frenchvale) and John Bisson (Cheticamp). Spickie was the last surviving member of her family. Spickie, the nickname she was given at an early age, was the name that she was known by throughout her life. She attended Saint Agnes School and as a young woman was employed at Epstein’s Clothing Store. On Nov. 25, 1947, Spickie married Duncan McIntyre of Inverness/New Waterford and together they raised a family of eight children. After her children were grown, she enjoyed many retirement years travelling extensively throughout Canada and the United States. Spickie always said that she was blessed for her years of sacrifice in raising a large family and although she loved travelling, it was less important than that time spent with her children. A firm believer in living a healthy lifestyle, she stayed active by walking daily on the Dominion Boardwalk. Spickie skated into her 70s at numerous local arenas, establishing many long-standing friendships along the way. As much as she liked skating, dancing was the activity she truly loved, be it at a social function or home in the kitchen with Duncan. Her kindness and generosity was shown in her gifts of baking she shared with family and friends. Spickie was well known on the Boardwalk as ‘the cookie lady.’ An excellent homemaker, she devoted her life to her family and took pride in doing so. Blessed with a sharp wit and a keen mind, Spickie always enjoyed a good laugh. For an extended period of time, Spickie attended “Aging Gracefully” but as she was often reminded by her children, she was not successful at aging gracefully. A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong member of Saint Agnes Parish and later Saint Leonard’s parish. Spickie is survived by her children, Francie (Vince) MacDonald and their children, Jenna and James; John ‘ Ticker’ and his children, Katie, Sarah (Nathan) Soldon and Nicole; Billy, Bernie, Brenda and Stephen (Michelle) and their children, Joshua and Zachary. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Teresa MacNeil (the late Jimmy) and her children, Maggie (Nick MacIssac), Duncan and Rory. Spickie was predeceased by her husband, Duncan, in 1994, her sons, Jimmy in 1990 and Daniel Paul in 1963, and by her daughter-in-law, Carol Anne (Power) McIntyre in 2015. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Maggie, Molly, Katie, Johnnie, Peter, Wilfred, Florence, Teresa, Joe, Ernest, Gook and Bernie. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, N.S. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate Spickie’s life will take place at the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, N.S., on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at 1 p.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, 1510 Grand Lake Rd., Sydney, N.S. A luncheon will follow at Saint Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent St., New Waterford. In lieu of food being sent to the family home, the family respectfully requests that you lend a helping hand by sending a special treat or a meal to seniors in your community. If you so desire, donations in Spickie’s memory may be given at the funeral home to the Parish of Saint Leonard. He was the much loved son of the late Mary (MacDonald) and Bernie MacNeil of Sydney. He fought a long, and courageous battle with cancer for the past nine years, rarely complaining and accepting what he had to go through with grace and dignity. Doug is survived by his wife, and best friend of 42 years, Karen (Morrison); his son, Craig, Terrance Bay; sisters, Bernadette (Wally) Schella and Corinne (Roy) Taylor and brothers, Billy and Brent all of Sydney. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, James 'Jake' and Donnie; sisters, Joan Arlene, Peggy, Florence and Deannie Doug was a well known athlete excelling in both baseball and hockey. He played both junior and senior levels in both sports, also as a player/coach in Canadian National baseball championships. He was a left handed pitcher, well known throughout the Nova Scotia baseball community. Baseball was his first love with hockey a close second. Doug was a kind, witty, and loyal man who loved his wife and family and would do anything he could for anyone particularly if you were down and out. He had several different career paths including in the bar business, doing housing construction and before moving back to C.B. from B.C. was a jail guard with the RCMP. Doug had the courage to make some major changes in his life 27 years ago and it was the life accomplishment that he was most proud of. When he made that decision he told me "I promise to make you laugh at least once a day for the rest of our lives" and he kept that promise. He was loyal and trustworthy and if you ever asked him to keep a secret it left this earth with him. After his family the thing he loved most was his loyal companion Bailey, who he said walked him everyday, until his passing four years ago. I have to thank his friends, Kenny Mader, Art Risk and Val Merchant, for helping to make his journey easier. And also Dr. Steve MacDougall and partners, for taking such good care of him along with all the doctors from the cancer clinic and Dr Miller. Special thanks also to the doctors and nurses of the An Cala unit who made his last weeks much easier to bear. He appreciated you all. A memorial service will be held at T.W. The son of the late Victor and Violet Oursen, Abbie was born and raised in the Northend of Sydney. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Rose, his parents and grandson, Shane Johnston. He loved taking the girls to visit Nana Mader in Mahone Bay and camping in Ingonish and P.E.I. When Darren came along, they enjoyed many trips to New Hampshire and Florida. Abbie would happily recount the many summer days spent on the beaches of East Bay and Ben Eoin with his family. Abbie retired in 1989 after a lifelong career at the Sydney Steel Plant. He was a humble, loving man who was always giving of himself. He will be forever remembered for his gentle spirit and sense of humour. Abbie was a sports enthusiast and spent his younger years playing hockey, football and basketball. An avid bowler, Abbie joined the 400 club on April 30, 1984. He loved playing darts and cherished the friendships established from the many evenings of friendly competition. Faith was a huge part of Abbie’s life and growing up he was a member of the Sacred Heart parish and later, with his own family, shared much joy as a member of both the St. Mary’s Polish and St. Anthony Daniel parishes. Published in January or 2015: Frances Evelyn Martin February 4, 1922 - January 31, 2015 Obituary Martin (Frances Evelyn Greer) "Fran" Fran was born February 4, 1922, died January 31, 2015, at the QEII Hospital in Halifax following a stroke, a few days from her 93rd birthday. Fortunately, all five of her children, and several other family members, could be with her. She was born in Oshawa, Ontario, to Grace (Longfield) and Leonard Greer. In 1941 she married J. Reid Martin of Montreal, and they enjoyed 57 happy years together. They had 6 children: Nancy (Fred Chipman) of Wolfville; James "Jim" of Bathurst and Sackville NB; Linda (Hubert Jacquin) of Enfield; Deborah "Debbie/Deb", (1952-1994); Peter (Colleen Cameron-Martin) of Sydney; Liane (Sandy MacMullin) of Halifax. Fran is survived by 14 grandchildren: Hugh Chipman (Tania), Tim Chipman (Suzanne Zinck); Temina (Matt Legere), Bryan Martin (Lanna Campbell); Heidi Fennell Pike (Todd Pike), Robyn Fennell (Philip Downs); Jennifer Martin; Ben Blakeburn (Megan Ladelpha), Aimee (Jonathan) Clemis, Jodi Martin and Andrew Blakeburn Martin (Tamara Budgell); Krystenne MacMullin (Lynden Giles), Heather MacMullin, Gregory MacMullin. Fran's step-grandchildren are: Marc (Meghan) Hull-Jacquin, Kristine (Arvin) Kovacevic; Brandy Martin and Kyle (Melanie Green) Martin. Fran is survived also by 19 great-grandchildren: Max and Jack Chipman, Rebecca Chipman; Keiara and Eaden Legere; Dylan and Evan Downs; Maeve and Nora Clemis; Hudson Ladelpha-Blakeburn, Alyssa Blakeburn, Isabella and Addison Budgell-Blakeburn; Braedon Spires; Damien Munroe Martin; Dezmend and Lina Kovacevic; Cybil and Xavier Hull-Jacquin. Fran worked at Eaton's in Toronto before she and Reid moved to Montreal, where she lived with his family while he was overseas during WWII. In 1947 they and their first two children moved to Sydney N.S. and then to Coxheath, home for most of their married life. Fran and Reid, who had always wanted a large family, had four more children between 1949 and 1958. Fran took bookkeeping courses before working with her husband after he started Martin Equipment Ltd (1965-1987). In 1998, Reid died, and a few years later, Fran moved to Halifax, to be closer to most of her family. She lived first by herself in an apartment, then moved to assisted living for women at Victoria Hall, Halifax, later to White Hills Long Term Care in Hammonds Plains, as her eyesight and abilities declined. Fran would wish us to give a special thanks to Dr. Arif Samad, whose care for her Age-Related Macular Degeneration over 14 years, saved a portion of her vision, allowing her a greater measure of independence. The family also thank the staff at Victoria Hall and White Hills for their thoughtful care during Fran's time with them, and the QEII Hospital for providing the privacy of a palliative room during Fran's last days. Throughout her life, Fran was active in the community. She was a member of the Anglican Church Women's Auxiliary and volunteered with the Red Cross Corps in Sydney. Long a fan of expert cook Madame Benoit, and the writer and bio-chemist Adelle Davis ("Let's Have Healthy Children"), her family recall her good cooking, and her emphasis on healthy eating, (which included finishing the vegetables on your plate). Fran had a great belief in the health benefits of brewer's yeast in her morning orange juice, even if few mustered the courage to taste that wonder-potion. Fran, whose mother died when she was five, always valued family very highly. She is remembered for her progressive attitude toward combining family with work outside the home, her belief in commitment and hard work, her positive and practical outlook, her thoughtfulness of others, interest in everyone, ability to remember birthdays, and for being well-organized. A daughter-in-law recalls that "She made me feel special, and part of the family. She loved her flock. " Most certainly, she was well loved in return. The funeral service for Fran Martin, a resident of Coxheath for 52 years, will be held on Saturday June 6th at 2 pm, at the Anglican Church of Christ the King, on the corner of George and Trinity, in Sydney. Donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or the charity of your choice.
