Patrick James 'Pat' Bork Born In: Medstead Saskatchewan Born: October 30th, 1933 Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: June 26th, 2015 Patrick James Bork at the age 81, on Friday, June 26, 2015, in the watchful care of his family, passed away at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital. Born on Oct. 30, 1933 in Medstead, Saskatchewan, to parents William Anders Bork and Ann Jane ( MacKenzie) Bork, he later relocated to Creston, B.C. Pat didn’t wait long before kicking up the small town blues. At the age of 19, Pat joined the RCN which sparked his lifelong love of travel. It would be hard for those who knew Pat to whittle down his countless list of skills to just one, or even a couple, that defined him, but to his grandchildren he will forever be immortalized as the man who could fix anything. His official education, however, took place at Stadacona, where he met the love of his life, Rose. The two of them recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on May 30 though either could easily have been mistaken for newlyweds. Pat’s unquenchably curious mind propelled him to be a class-a student of the world. As a testament to his strong work ethic, while being a full-time employee at Hermes Electronics (1958-2001), he continued his education by attending evening university classes. With enough self-taught learning to best any undergraduate physicist, and an encyclopedic-memory of all things filed under ‘useless’ information, there were few questions that would leave him without an answer; or, at the very least, an anecdotal recollection of a nearly relevant (or not so relevant) story about his travels from around the globe. An exceptionally religious man, Pat was a devout member of St. Peter’s Parish for 46 years. He served on the parish council, as a Eucharistic Minister and was blessed to find a second home and family at St. Peter’s. Pat was also an accomplished musician. Unlike most, he was not satisfied with the pursuit of one or two instruments, instead taking on over a dozen through the course of his lifetime. Pat remained notably more dedicated to his piano and his fiddle, partaking in a weekly engagement with the Metro Fiddlers. More recently he became dedicated to his Les Paul electric guitar. Pat was curious, patient and understanding. Exercising these traits in his everyday life is what enabled him to be such a gifted storyteller, a skillful puzzle solver, and above all, a loving and cherished husband, father, grandfather and “Crampa”. He was predeceased by his brother Chris and his two grandsons, Sean and Alex. He is survived by wife, Rose (Kenny), children, Roseanne (Ken) Chisholm and their children, Ryan (Kathleen), Emily, Johanna, Daniel and Sarah Jane, Carla (Jay) Forbes and their children, Terry (Lynda) and their children Dylan and Alexandra. He is also survived by his sister Ann Marie (Dolly) Vishloff. A quote from his yearbook states that, “He is the only man I know that could give Einstein a run for his money.” Arrangements have been entrusted to A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, N.S. from where visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 2 at 12 p.m. in Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Dartmouth. Interment will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association or World Vision Canada. A memorial service in her heart's home, Albert Bridge, is planned for August. The details will be announced at a later date. Donald Gardiner MacLeod Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: June 22nd, 2015 With broken hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Donald Gardiner MacLeod, 76, a longtime resident of Forest Street, Glace Bay, on Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Halifax Infirmary following a brief illness. Donnie’s birth parents were Marion (MacDonald) and Angus 'Gussie' MacLeod of Long Beach. Tragically Marion passed away following the birth. Donnie was raised by his Ma and Da, Jean (Robertson) and John W. MacLeod of Donkin. A more loving home would have been impossible to find. A large family, with five boys and six girls, quickly accepted Donnie as their own; he was not only loved, but adored. He will always be known as ‘the baby’ by his doting sisters. This exceptional family raised a boy who became a wonderful family man; a dear husband, father, brother and uncle. He was a good man, a true gentleman with a heart of gold. He was caring, supportive, generous and thoughtful. Donnie had an easy-going nature, who took life in stride and was always our noted optimist. Rarely without a smile, his dry sense of humour and quick wit brought a laugh to many. He was a born storyteller. Many great memories were made with family and friends over the years at the bungalow in Mira. He and Phyllis were a constant fixture summer after summer. Be it at their home or bungalow, everyone was warmly welcomed and made to feel part of the family. Donnie’s career began at the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway as brakeman and conductor. He worked on the S&L for 12 years. He then worked as second class boiler 0perator at Seaboard Power Plant, Glace Bay for 12 years. Donnie paid service to his community early on. For 10 years he was a volunteer firefighter with the Donkin Fire Department and very active in union affairs and local politics. He also served on the Glace Bay School Board from 1978-80. In the provincial by-election in 1980, Donnie was elected government member of the legislative assembly for Cape Breton East (Glace Bay). In the general election of 1981, he was re-elected with a larger majority. In the general election of 1984 he was once again re-elected with an even larger majority, despite the fact that both Devco and the nurses at the two local hospitals were on strike at the time. Donnie was a diligent supporter of the town of Glace Bay and its people. He worked hard to better the area he served and he served us proudly. As a man and a politician, Donnie was well-liked and respected. It was always his nature to treat everyone equally well, regardless of their political, religious or social standing. Among his many accomplishments, he especially took pride in his role bringing in Automatic Assumption for families of surviving coal miners, the construction of the Glace Bay General Hospital, the development of Renwick Brook and his role in the initial stages of a new High School for Glace Bay. Also included were the many infrastructure projects in Glace Bay and the countless individuals he helped along the way. Donnie considered this time in the 1980s, when both he and Dave Dingwall, MP, sat on the government side of their respective houses, as being amongst one of the most beneficial times in Glace Bay’s history. Although Donnie was a proud Cape Bretoner, he was an equally proud Nova Scotian and considered it a privilege to represent the province nationally and internationally on numerous occasions. Although he enjoyed his time as a member of the legislative assembly, winning three elections in eight years, “Little Donnie” chose not to run in the 1988 election. Deciding to spend more time with his family, he returned to Nova Scotia Power working at the Point Aconi Power Generating Station. In 1993, he retired from Seaboard Power Plant, ending his 25-year career with N.S. Power. Over the years, he was a member of the local unions of the CBRT & GW, CAW and IBEW. Donnie is survived by children, Brian and Donna; sisters, Helen MacLeod and Ruth Reid; sisters-in-law, Lois and Gladys MacLeod; sister-in-law Audrey (Jim) Blacklock; brothers-in-law, Tommy (Joan) and Allan (Grace) Attwood, and a large family of cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend of 48 years, Phyllis 'Sister' Attwood in 2012, her parents, Christena 'Tena' (MacDonald) and Wilfred 'Dope', stepmother Hilda (Crompton) MacLeod, brothers, David, Johnny, Robbie, Neil and Alex, sisters, Annie Murrant, Elizabeth MacMillan, Isabel Clarke and Jean MacLeod, sister-in-law Ann Nicholson, nephews, Alex and Billy MacMillan and recently his beloved dog Sophie. Visitation for Donnie will be held Monday, June 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 30 at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Donations in Donnie’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. There are no words to express how you will be missed, by so many. Online condolences to www.pattenfuneral.com.

Joaquim 'Jack' Mira Sr. Born In: Portugal Passed in: Louisbourg Passed on: June 24th, 2015 “Goodbye My Friend!” It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of a “Great Fisherman”, our dear father, husband and grandfather, on June 24, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a very courageous and unexpected illness, which he fought hard to overcome. He was 79. Jack was born and raised in Praia de Buarcos, Portugal, to his mother Silvina Cacoa, and father, Antonio Martins Mirao. He always had a love of the sea. His blue eyes always glistened just like the waters. He became known as a great fisherman, No. 1 both on land and on sea. At the age of 13 years, Jack became a fisherman, helping his father on their small boat and making and repairing nets, which he excelled at. As a young boy, he was also responsible for knocking on the doors of the many women helpers who would in the early hours have to go to the coastline and help bring in the small vessels, filled with fish. Jack became known as a young boy who had a special ability to work and catch lots of fish and this is what made him most happy – “to catch lots of fish” as he would say many times. He was acquired by the most famous fishing captains in Portugal, who said they needed him aboard their boats to become fishing champions of the sea. Jack held five different fishing licence certificates and special training certificates such as Captain, Mate, Net-maker, etc. for in Portugal you needed to take special courses and training to call yourself a true fisherman and be a champion of the waters. Not everyone was suited for this. When Jack was 18, he left his parents to engage in the Great White fleet, leaving the mother ship and going out in his little dory (#2) for periods of six months, all in attempts to catch codfish on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, many times under dangerous conditions with just a small lunch aboard. He was hailed by his captains as being the fisherman onboard to chart the top of the lists for having the most fish in his dory. He always said God would fill his boat and that’s exactly how things went along life’s way. He knew how to do it all in the fishing world, and making knots was also something he excelled at. Jack immigrated to Canada in 1966, not knowing a single word of English, but what he did know was how to work hard from his experiences in Portugal and make a better life for himself and his family. This is what he set out to do and became very successful at. He left his wife Manuela, and son Jack Jr. (five years old) back in Portugal and settled in Louisbourg alone, no house, no shelter, not knowing how to speak or ask for food or water, but he found shelter in places near the wharf and sometimes in a restaurant downtown. Many times, he told stories of being very cold and having his knees freeze in the snow while trying to make it here. It wasn’t easy and he did it all for his family. He was a man of great sacrifice. When Jack arrived in Louisbourg, he began working on the draggers and there he had a place to sleep with food and water available. He communicated and learned from what he saw others do. Once he made enough money, he sent it back to Portugal to send for his wife and son to join him here and start a new life together in Louisbourg. He fished on many vessels, trawlers and herring seiners and one of the greatest ones was called “Margaret Elizabeth” where he made most of his money, catching sardines and working on those nets off the coast of Mulgrave and Yarmouth. He was able to make enough to send back to Portugal to build his mom and dad a home there. He later returned to Louisbourg to fish on other boats, but he never went without a job. He worked with the best fishing captains in Louisbourg, such as Orlando Vallis, Walter Blagdon and Joe Pitcher. He worked at National Sea Products fishplant and the Portuguese Plant and later decided to build his own boat with his son Jack Jr, naming it “Marie Elizabeth”. He then continued working on town grants until his retirement. Jack was a very humble natured man who worked hard for everything he had. He was respected by many and always greeted his many friends with a “Hello, my friend”. Jack enjoyed many things, but cherished most of all spending time with his daughter Elizabeth, whom he regarded as his best friend, caregiver and “right hand”. She tried her hardest to always help him. Where you saw one, you saw the other! They were inseparable and a great comfort to each other and loved each other’s company. They were very attached. Jack also loved to take walks in Louisbourg, talking to his many friends who he’d meet here and there. He would go and check out the latest vehicles and watch soccer on TV. He enjoyed visiting his daughter, Gloria in New Brunswick and always ensured there was wood in the stove during winter. He was known for keeping the house warm. He also enjoyed going to the Sydney Airport to watch the flights take off and land, while picking up Gloria. He loved his five grandchildren, Kayla, Victoria, Colton, Alexis and Carter and had many laughs with them. His wife Manuela always stood by his side for the 56 years they were married and he always enjoyed her company and many trips to Sydney together. Besides his loving wife Manuela, he is survived by his daughter Elizabeth (who always helped care for him), daughter Gloria (Jeff) and daughter-in-law Susan; five grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Laura and brother Antonio, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives in Portugal and many close friends both here and abroad. Jack was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents, his mother Silvina, father Antonio and son Jack Jr. (2000) who was always a great helper and whom he kept in his heart. Now they are together watching over us in Heaven. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, June 27 at 10 a.m. Burial will take place in Jack’s home village in Portugal. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com <http://www.twcurry.com/>. My best friend is like no other. When I was a baby he held me when I cried, washed my face when it got dirty and fed me when I was hungry. When I was stumbling to learn to walk he picked me up. When I was ready to venture without training wheels on my first bike, he gave me a gentle push and walked beside me. When I crossed the road he held my hand. When he went places he brought me with him. As I explored teen hood he understood my emotions and helped me through them. He forgave me when I did things I shouldn’t have and corrected me when I went wrong. When I entered my twenties he became proud of me and all my accomplishments when I went off to work, got my first jeep and experienced life as an adult. By the time I hit my thirties my best friend was in his 70s. I now took him flying, held his hand when he walked, picked him up when he fell down, held him when he cried and fed him when he was hungry. I forgave him when he did something out of the usual, washed his face when it got dirty, and became more proud of him every day when I saw the inner strength he had. My best friend was my Dad. He never judged me or tried to change who I was. He was kind, loving and the Dad everyone should have. Dad went to heaven on June 24, 2015. The hardest thing to deal with is the loneliness. I know he is resting and in good hands. As God has now taken on my roll of caregiver and can do a much better job. Gone but not forgotten. Online condolences to www.pattenfuneral.com <http://www.pattenfuneral.com/>. The former things have passed away.” —Revelation 21:4 Joaquim 'Jack' Mira Sr. To The best Dad in the world, I love you forever. - Daughter Elizabeth.
