Mary (MacLean) Grimm Born In: Scotchtown Born: October 10th, 1934 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: July 10th, 2015 Our hearts are filled with grief as we announce the passing of our beloved mother on July 10, 2015, just eight short months after our father, Edward Grimm. Born on Oct. 10, 1934, mom was the former Mary MacLean of Scotchtown and the eldest daughter of Joseph MacLean (Boisdale) and Catherine Campbell (Frenchvale). She was predeceased by two brothers, Rannie MacLean (Marion Bridge) and Cecil MacLean (Scotchtown) and survived by her sister Christina White (New Victoria). In 1963, she married Edward Grimm, a young military officer, and they started their lives as a military family frequently moving within Canada but always making the journey home to Cape Breton each summer. Their family grew to include daughters Valerie MacNeill (Brian), Ottawa, Christine (John MacNeil), Truro and son Michael (Charlene), Ottawa. When the time came to settle back home in Cape Breton, she continued her work with the Toronto Dominion Bank where she proudly balanced her cash to the penny and enjoyed lunches at the Peking with friends. She was an avid gardener and loved beating you at a good game of cards. As Dad always said, she gladly took up retirement, to become a "professional grandmother". She reveled in the new additions to the family, busy, boisterous grandsons, Logan, Keegan, Kenzie and Cameron. Finally, the tides changed with the birth of her namesake and first granddaughter Maari ... but Michael and Charlene hit the jackpot with the arrival of the next generation of 'Grimm Girls', triplets Regan, Emma and Mya. In 2013, Mom and Dad were blessed with the arrival of great-grandson Nathan, son of Keegan (Jenna Camus). Mom was a steady influence on all of us and her devotion to us was always her priority, "We rise again in the faces of our children." Passed on: January 4th, 2015 John Leslie Bethune, 53, passed away suddenly of a massive heart attack in Etobicoke, Ont. on Jan. 4, 2015. Born on January 3, 1962 in Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, N.S. He was the second of four children of the late Crossie and Marie Bethune, still residing in Baddeck. To say John was adept at many things is an understatement and does not do him justice. He excelled at many things such as sports playing basketball and hockey as a youth. As many have said he mastered the art of hockey, he was like poetry on ice and lovely to watch. A valued player and integral part of the team, he very much enjoyed team sports, their endeavors and camaraderie. As a young teenager John began playing the guitar, in no time he was playing proficiently both reading music and by ear. He would listen to a song on the radio, try to figure it out and in a few minutes be able to play the whole tune. He loved a challenge. He spent many joyous hours playing with friends in a band or small jams and in solitude. He had a kind and gentle soul with a great sense of humour. Animals and young children seemed to be enamored by him. Once he opened his heart everyone adored him. His nephews Zach and Justin have wonderful memories of Uncle John teaching them to play the guitar and hockey techniques. Educated in Cape Breton and Antigonish, John then embarked on an all too familiar treck to Toronto in search of work where he remained for 32 years. Mostly with the love of his life Audrey Nicholson, formerly from Englishtown, Cape Breton Island. John and Audrey began dating at 17 while both were attending high school in Baddeck. Following high school, Audrey moved to Toronto to join her sister. Most definitely the reason why John went there, too. Love is a powerful draw. Working at a few different jobs John then found his last employer Nelson Welding, a family run business. He enjoyed working with Andy Bokma, his father and the guys for 20 years. John was loyal to the core. "He was a straight shooter, a devoted and valued employee." said Andy. John learned welding and automotive mechanics from his father, Crossie, both at home and while 'tinkering' at his grandfather's business, Bethune's Garage, a landmark for many years on the main street of Baddeck. 'Tinkering', building and rebuilding, resolving a challenge were often the norm with Crossie and the crew at Bethune's Garage. John fit right in. The skills he learned carried with him to the end, including the love of a good laugh. John loved to laugh, jokes and hijinks and telling stories, funny ones. John had a great sense of humour. He was proficient at many things, seemingly anything he turned his hand to music, sports, welding, building doon buggies and roadsters. John enjoyed a challenge, he would continue until the problem was solved, figured out and done with, moving on to the next one. What can we say - we miss you John - we will always miss you. It saddens our hearts to think you passed away without knowing just how much you were loved by all of us. In addition to his life partner, Audrey Nicholson, Etobicoke, Ont., he is survived by his mother, Marie Bethune, Baddeck, N.S.; his brothers, Peter (Peggy) Charlottetown, P.E.I. and Robert (Nona), Sydney Mines, N.S.; his sister, Belinda Bethune, Halifax, N.S.; nephews, Zach (Melissa), Fort McMurray, Alta., Justin (Kristin), Sydney Mines, N.S.; nieces, Rachael, Kings College, Halifax, N.S., Stephi, University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Sarah, Charlottetown, P.E.I. and several aunts, uncles and cousins scattered across Canada and USA. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life and burial ceremony will be held on Aug. 1, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Greenwood United Church in Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, N.S. A reception of light lunch and tea to follow in the church basement. Burial in Englishtown Cemetery, in a joint plot where Audrey can be buried next to him, to follow the reception. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations can be made to the Victoria County Memorial Hospital Charitable Fund, the SPCA, the Canadian Cancer Society, Animal Rescue organizations or the charity of your choice. Christine Harrison Born In: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Born: August 14th, 1953 Passed in: Guelph, Ontario, Canada Passed on: June 29th, 2015 Chris was born in Toronto on Aug. 14, 1953 and died peacefully at Hospice Wellington (Guelph) on June 29, 2015 after a long and arduous struggle with colon and bone cancer. Predeceased by her parents, James and Elizabeth Harrison (Main), Christine is survived by her husband, Ron; brother, Jim; sister-in-law, Arlene, their children Ali, Koal, Jack and Maisie; as well as Aunt Jean Buckley and numerous cousins. She will be missed by her mother-in-law, Annabelle MacKinnon. She will also be missed by her dear friends, Lynn and Mike and their children, Jane and Sarah. Through nature and nurture Christine had a keen mind and forceful spirit which led to leaving high school seeking “real” life in the late sixties. Stints in shoe sales and as a bank teller soon led her to Ryerson Polytechnic where she took courses enabling her to enter the University of Guelph. She spoke of her experience at Ryerson as awakening a love for philosophy that deepened as she completed her B.A. and M.A. (1985) at Guelph. Christine’s post-graduate academic focus was bioethics which at the time was just emerging as a profession. Chris received her PhD in 1990 at McMaster University. For several years she worked with a Hamilton area gerontologist and then local VON leadership with the broad goal of maintaining and enhancing independence and autonomy for seniors at a time when society was all-too-ready to institutionalize and infantilize them. Christine then secured a position at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, working there for almost 20 years. Most of her time at SickKids was as Director of Bioethics. During those years, bioethics was maturing and deepening as a profession and her colleagues have noted she was pivotal in the development and growth of their community of practice. Since their founding Dr Harrison was a member of the Canadian Bioethics Society (CBS) and of the University of Toronto based Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB). She served as president of the CBS, chairing or co-chairing three of their annual conferences. Christine received the CBS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and the JCB has created an annual award in her name, the “Christine Harrison Bioethics Education Award for Integration of Theory and Practice”. Perhaps Christine’s proudest honour was that her beloved SickKids created the “Christine Harrison Paediatric Grand Rounds” to take place as part of the hospital’s annual Bioethics Week program which she helped found and make an important part of its institutional life. After she finally had to take medical leave from SickKids, Chris studied for and received a certificate in Canine Massage. She volunteered at the Guelph Humane Society, helping dogs under stress and sometimes in pain cope with their new environment. Chris and her husband Ron delighted in travel and some of her fondest moments were spent with him on these trips abroad. In Ron, she truly met her intellectual partner and found a lasting love, solace and friendship both in good days, and in very difficult days. We miss you Chris, profoundly. Your unique capacity to challenge us with your intelligence and your deep caring will not only be remembered but recounted frequently with both sorrow and joy. We will all forever miss your love and your beautiful laugh. Donations in Christine’s memory may be made to The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), the Guelph Humane Society, or Hospice Wellington (Guelph). Condolences may be sent to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>. CHIASSON The time has come to bid a fond farewell to Bernard Alexander Chiasson, resident of Le Foyer Père Fiset, formerly from St. Joseph du Moine. We, his family, are brokenhearted but take comfort in knowing that his days of sickness are gone. Many people in this world have not experienced love. Bernie loved and was loved. He was the heart of our family. He and Elizabeth, his wife of 58 years, brought the loves of their lives into this world: Bernice, Kevin, Jeannine, Linus and Gisele. He loved them wholeheartedly and unconditionally. He accepted and loved as his own their spouses Mike, Gelas, Lisette and Paul. His love deepened in his favourite role of best Pepere ever to nine blessings: Melissa, Renee, Allison, Justine, Ryan, Lindsay, Ashley, Hannah and Marcus. Each one lovingly bounced upon his knee and were brought for their special trips to “se les bateaux avec Pepere”. Riley, Jacob and Connor were blessed with the world’s greatest grand-pepere. The loss of a big brother will be sorely felt by his sisters Valerie and Dorothy; stepsister Josephine Steele and their spouses and families, as well as his brother Marcel. Numerous nieces and nephews will feel this loss as they loved their Uncle Bernie. Friendship meant the world to Bernie and he was very blessed with many people he cherished and was proud to call his friends. A heart-warming reunion was no doubt held as he joined many treasured friends and family who predeceased him. He rejoiced in being reunited with his son Linus; granddaughters Lindsay and Ashley; parents William and Marie Chiasson; stepfather Willie Shomphe; sisters Rose-Helene, F.D.J., Marie Louise and Bertha; brother Henry and stepsisters Irene and Isabelle. Many were the evenings spent with family and friends playing cards. All opponents took great pleasure in dealing him a “skunk” during a game of crib, or putting him in the “hole” during a heated game of 200. There was no better opponent to take on, win or lose. Bernie took great pleasure during the summer, when his health permitted, in spending countless hours after a long day’s carpentry work picking wild strawberries. No wildlife, black flies, electric fence or the odd “No Trespassing” sign could deter him from his passion; his biggest disappointment was the amount of berries that would go unpicked. A lover of fiddle music, Bernie enjoyed listening to his fiddle greats. La Toune a Bernie, composed for him by Colin Grant, was his most treasured possession. He enjoyed it, tapping his fingers along until the very end. Known to most for the courage and strength shown through adversities experienced in his life, Bernie never complained. He faced each health challenge with dignity and grace, and was an example for all who knew him. He knew life was a precious gift to cherish and well worth fighting for. A man of great faith, Bernie held fast to his belief in God’s will. He often sought blessings from priests who had always held a special place in his heart. He was a firm believer in the power of prayer and God’s grace. Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 1st, 2015. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, July 2nd at l’Eglise St. Joseph du Moine. Donations in his memory may be made to l’Eglise St. Joseph du Moine. In remembrance of Dad, please hum a happy tune to make difficult tasks more bearable. Condolences may be sent to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>. “We can no longer see you with our eyes or touch you with our hands, but we will feel you in our hearts forever.” WHITE Mary Elizabeth White (Beaton) (nee MacEachen). Glenn was a founding member of the Peterborough Memorial Society, past-president of the Federation of Ontario Memorial Societies, a tireless volunteer for the City of Peterborough and a vigorous campaigner for the Parkway.
