She lost her long struggle with dementia after a fall caused her to slip into a rapid decline. Sarah was born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton to Patrick and Mathilda Currie on May 30, 1931, one of 14 siblings. She was predeceased by her husband, John Charles MacLean, brothers, John, Paddy, Cyril, Mickey, infant Peter and sisters, Grace, Suzie, Georgina and Aggie. Sarah will be sorely missed by her children Ann, Halifax, Charlene (Melvin Burke), White’s Lake, Patricia (Fred Hunter), Whitby, John (Sandra Gavell), Cole Harbour, and Colleen (Robert Blackburn), Sackville, N.S.; loving grandchildren, James, Hamilton Ont., Natalie, Squamish, B.C., Cailean, Jasper, Alta., Eilidh and Lachlan, Cole Harbour, Kiley and Sean, Halifax, Shannon and Ashley, Toronto, and great-grandson, North, Hamilton, Ont. She is also survived by sisters, Pauline Leon, Sydney, Patricia Leon, Sydney, Mathilda Bagnell, Sydney and Shirley Bourgeois, Halifax. When Sarah was a little girl, the Curries returned to their ancestral homestead in MacAdam’s Lake, Cape Breton, where they remained, running a lumber camp and general store. Sarah was raised in a traditional Gaelic environment, rich in the cultural traditions of her ancestors from South Uist. At a very young age she had many responsibilities and acquired an impressive list of skills in baking, cooking, quilt making, knitting, sewing and gardening. Later in life she would excel at catering, baking wedding cakes and creating astonishing gardens wherever she lived. She had a love for pipe music, which she heard in her home and community continuously, most notably from her father Paddy Currie and uncle Alex Currie, who were legendary traditional pipers. Without realizing it, Sarah was one of the last individuals anywhere to learn step-dancing and square sets to pipe music, a tradition lost even in Scotland. Sarah instilled this love of traditional Gaelic music in her children and grandchildren, several of whom became pipers, fiddlers, guitar players, and step dancers in their own right. In 1951, Sarah married John MacLean, (Johnny Red Rory) of Washabuck, who was a noted step dancer and fiddler from another family of great tradition bearers. They were dedicated to each other from then on and had loving life together, living in Sydney and East Bay. The times were difficult though, and Sarah showed her strength raising the growing family alone when Johnny (having already served in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in the Second World War) had to return to the Canadian Army for employment in the early 1950s. In 1963, they made the move to Toronto and had 20 wonderful years raising their children there. In Toronto, Jean and Johnny opened their home any time to expatriate Cape Bretoners, hosting many ceilidhs and music sessions, during which Sarah was well known for her well-set table and bounteous supply of baked treats for her guests. They had many dear friends from “down home” and their house on Stewart Smith Drive became a stopping place for many of the era’s great Cape Breton musicians such as Doug MacPhee, Johnny Wilmot, Bill Lamey, Big Donald MacLellan, Father Hugh A. MacDonald, Angus Chisholm, Janet Cameron, Francis Cameron, John Campbell, Sandy MacIntyre, John Allen Cameron, Findlay Walker, Winston Fitzgerald, Maybelle and Cameron Chisholm, Gerry Romard, Albert Chaisson, Danny Aucoin, Wilfred Chaisson and many more friends from Cheticamp. Shortly after Sarah and Johnny retired to East Bay in 1982, Sarah suffered her hardest moments at the sudden death of her husband. Johnny was only 58 and Sarah was 53. Her religious faith remained unshakable throughout those difficult years and she dedicated herself to helping other widows in their own struggles. She continued her passionate attachment to traditional music, cooking, baking and gardening, winning several awards for her recipes and gardens. The family would like to express its thanks to the wonderful staff of 7.2 South at the Halifax Infirmary, who provided compassion and superb care for our mother. Visitation for the late Mrs. MacLean will take place 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel in Sydney. A funeral mass will be held 2:30 p.m. on Monday, July 27 at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Washabuck. She faced her challenge as she lived; head on, with grace, tenacity and faith. She grew up in a vibrant Whitney Pier in Cape Breton. Leaving school to help support her family, she never lost her love of learning. Working at Woolworth's and then for decades at the Royal Bank, she completed her high school, her banking diplomas and her BBA; all while working full time, raising two daughters, helping those in need and working to help out in Rozeluk's Grocery, the family business. She completed her banking career in loans and tells stories of giving loans to those who needed them, but whose only collateral was their promise to Dorothy not to default. Handing over the loan papers to her boss Mom would say "This one is from the heart." No one ever defaulted on their loan. That was mom, always the first and last to help, and always the first to cook, bake and nourish the masses! She was an incredible artist, singer, a devout Catholic — a member of Our Lady of Fatima and St. Mary's Polish Church Choirs and CWL and recently St Anthony’s parish in Berwick. Moving to Berwick, during her illness, meant selling her home and leaving precious Cape Breton. Although difficult, she touched a whole new group of people in the Annapolis Valley. They too would experience the Love, Joy and Magic that is Dorothy. She will be welcomed in heaven by: her beloved husband Michael, her mama and papa, Johanna ‘Anna’ (Piskorz) and Michael Ardelli and her 11 brothers and sisters, Zygmond, Peter, Minnie, Ann, Victor, Mary, Aggie, Elsie, Mike, John and Charlie and many friends and family. Those who remain her daughters Alexis (Grant), husband Danny, grandkids, Danielle and Charles and Jane (Rozeluk-Gagnon), husband Darrel Gagnon, grandkids, Glen and Anna, and all those who considered her mother, grandma, family and friend, will strive to continue her legacy of strength of character, love, kindness and family. Mom always said. "Promise me you will keep your family connections!" "We Promise!" Many, many thanks to those who cared for mom and us: The Cape Breton Palliative team, Dr. Ritter, Jackie, Adele, Laurie and Theresa, Dr. Khodadad and all the members of the Cancer Center at CB Regional. The Valley Palliative Care team: Dr Burgess, Dr Birch, Jackie and Katrina. To the many members of the home VON Team. To Dr Ago & the staff at the Cancer Center at the VG, and to Nurse Annie for your care. To Dr. Gena Dickson and Dr. Brian MacInnis for your loving, supportive and dignified care of our mom and us. To the Valley Regional Medical B staff: for your care, compassion and dignity. To dearest Chelsea for your loving, dignified and precious care you gave to mom and us! To our family and friends who helped and supported mom and us, thank-you and God bless you! May angel’s wings carry you home dearest mama! You were the best mother! You live on in each of us. We will try to remember this: "Do not cry because it is over; Smile because it happened." No wake will be held, as per Dorothy's wishes. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 31, in Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Reception to follow in Church hall. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Mary's Polish Church rebuild fund at stmaryspolishchurch.ca <http://stmaryspolishchurch.ca/> or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com <http://www.twcurry.com/>. Frank Capstick Frank Capstick, the late husband of Elaine Capstick died on March 23, 2015. Interment will take place on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Cemetery located on Wallace Road in Glace Bay with Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Born on March 1st, 1951, he was the son of Mary (MacMillan) and the late John Jameison MacIsaac; Johnny was the oldest of 11 children. He is survived by his mother Mary; siblings Jimmie (Marion), Donnie (Annette), Marina (the late Robbie), A.J. (Virginia), Mickey (Sarah Ann), Jamie (Louise), Lauchie (Colleen), Neil (Janet) and David (Lorraine); 36 nieces and nephews; 14 grandnieces and nephews plus countless beloved cousins and friends. Predeceased by his father John Jameison; brother Duncan (Sheila); brother-in-law Robbie; niece Meggie and nephew Keith. Johnny retired from Port Hawkesbury Paper in 2006, as a heavy equipment operator after 35 years of service. He had always been an active member of the community. As the founder of the Kildonan Pipe Band, he provided the means for many aspiring pipers and drummers to receive the training needed to develop their skills. Johnny was a member of the Judique Volunteer Fire Department and an integral part of the Judique Ambulance Service. He always had a love of animals. After Red Vermont became a part of his life 23 years ago, his love of Morgan horses only grew and became part of his family. He loved all things Scottish, especially Celtic music and family history. He proudly carried on his father’s interest in coaching tug-of-war in the Judique area. If Johnny couldn’t be found at the barn, he could be found at the CMIC having lunch and enjoying local talent, or being his mischievous self with friends at Wayne’s Variety. Johnny always held a special place in his heart for his sisters-in-law, who he would tease relentlessly. Although Johnny didn’t have any children of his own, his nieces and nephews were his pride and joy. He took particular interest in all their accomplishments. Uncle Johnny could be found at recitals, sporting events, concerts or anything having to do with his nieces and nephew – sometimes slipping out before they knew he was there. He was their biggest supporter and they could only be so lucky to have that kind of impact on others. We love you Uncle Johnny and we will miss you. Kelly Anne MacQuarrie was born on Oct. 4, 1988, to parents Andrea (nee Clevett) and Calum MacQuarrie of Glace Bay. Beloved sister of Ian, she was 26 years old. Kelly faced many challenges during her short life due to illness. She faced these challenges with dignity, grace and courage and was a shining example to all who knew her. This last challenge proved to be too much for her to overcome, but all through it she worried and cared more about others than she did for herself. Her love for all her family was tangible. She was a hero to look up to for mom, dad and Ian. Never complaining but willing to do anything she had to so that she could get well. We are so privileged to have had her in our lives even for such a short time. During her brief time here on earth, she was a member of Sparks, Brownies and Girl Guides in Glace Bay. In elementary school she was on the Wildcats basketball team but due to illness she was unable to continue to play. She then became a team manger helping out where she could. She was a faithful alter server at St. Mary’s Church for a number of years and assisted Rev. Vernon Reid at the altar in a special role created just for her. She graduated from Glace Bay High School in 2007. She worked as a student feeder at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home for three years, the Sears Store in Glace Bay and finally at Glace Bay Chiropractic for her cousin Kyle. Survived by her mom, dad and brother Ian (Kristina) and special companion “Angel”, her beloved dog who was always at her side, paternal grandmother Mary MacQuarrie, aunts, uncles, Marilyn and Rannie Whalen (Dawn, Rannie and Janice), Jim and Joan MacQuarrie (Keith and Jan), Ann and Earl Morgan (Kyle, Arlie Beth and Gavin), Isabel and Gary MacDonald (Ross and Neal) and Kathy and Stuart MacAulay, who were like her second parents (Caelin and Alex) as well as other relatives and many friends. Broken Chain We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone; For part of us went with you The day God called you Home. You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide; And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same; But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Douglas Roderick Crowe, surrounded by his loving and devoted family, joined the love of his life Eileen into eternal life. Doug was born in New Waterford on May 17, 1928, the 5th of 10 children of Bridget(Morrison) and Neil Allan Crowe. He attended school at St.Agnes. He was first employed at Eaton's in New Waterford at the age of 17, then later brushed in the coal mine at Number 12 Colliery. On October 28,1947 he married the beautiful Eileen Isabel Gillis. He followed in his father's footsteps when he joined the New Waterford Police Department on Dec. 24,1954. Dad became chief of police of the Town of New Waterford in 1967. He was a great mentor to the young police cadets and was very proud to serve the community of New Waterford until his retirement in 1993. He was extremely proud when his son Wayne and grandsons Tony and Mark chose a career in policing adding to the legacy started by his father. Doug served as president of the Maritime Chiefs of Police Association as well as president of the Canadian Chiefs of Police Association. Throughout his life, Doug was committed to the betterment of his community not only through his work but also through his involvement in many clubs and organizations. Since 1960 he was a devoted and faithful member of the Parish of St. Leonard (formerly Mount Carmel parish). He was also a member of the Lion's Club and Rotary Club. Doug served as a mentor to young people through his involvement with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. He was a member of the Sydney Curling Club where he thoroughly enjoyed playing Tarabish with his many friends. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club. Doug and Eileen enjoyed a life filled with love, laughter, dancing, entertaining friends and family and serving their community. By far their greatest and proudest accomplishment was their children. They were committed to providing a loving and happy home not only for their four children but they also opened their home to many extended family members in need of a loving family environment. After the devastating death of his wife Eileen in 1988, Doug took on the role of both Dad and Mom to his children and their families. He continued his routine of cooking Sunday dinner (as he always did for Eileen to give her a break from cooking). Upon her death he also learned to bake to fulfill another void left by the loss of Eileen. Although his children rallied around him after the death of their Mom, Doug's main concern was for the health and welfare of everyone but himself. His gift of humour, caring, devotion and wonderful culinary skills led to the continued tradition of Sunday dinners at Papa Doug's filled with laughter, great conversation and a togetherness not always experienced in today's fast paced society. Doug is survived by his son Wayne (Barbara) and their sons Tony (Alysia), Robert (Kristy) and Mark (April), his daughter Debbie (Gerard) MacDonald and their children Kelly (Todd) and Ryan (Johanne), sons Shaun (Bill) and David (Michelle) and their daughters Caitlyn (Dylan) and Kristin. He was the proud great-grandfather to Seth, Nate, Piper and Jordyn. Also surviving are Doug's sisters Kay (Clarence) Sampson,Glace Bay, Nancy Corbett, Acadia House, Maple Hill Manor and brother Charlie (Cavell), New Waterford and his mother-in-law Elizabeth Gillis. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Doug was a great father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, mentor and friend to many people who have been fortunate enough to be a part of the life and legacy of this great man. Besides his parents and wife Eileen, Doug was predeceased by his son Billy in infancy in 1948, his son Shaun's former partner Warren P. MacDonald Q.C. in 1997 and his father-in-law and great friend Jim Gillis in 1989. He was also predeceased by his siblings Laughlin (aka Buster), Alexander, Renee (Teddy), Jackie (Larry ), Dee (John) and Mary (Bernie) and his brother-in-law Wallace Corbett. Also predeceasing him were several nieces and nephews. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff of Maple Hill Manor for their care and concern for Dad over the past few months. We would also like to thank Theresa Poirier, Susie Head and Mildred Bernasky who assisted Dad in maintaining his home in the years following the loss of Eileen. A very big thank-you goes out to a special lady, Carmella Lee, who generously gave up her room at Maple Hill Manor in the days prior to Doug's passing. This enabled the family to rally around and care for Dad with the privacy and respect he so deserved. It also gave us an opportunity to privately share in our grief through the story telling that Dad so enjoyed! Cremation has taken place.
