Born in Glace Bay, Norm was the son of the late Ronald and Viola (MacVicar) Ferguson. He was a hard working dedicated employee of Mason's Wholesale for over 34 years. Normie as many of his customers called him spent many of those years as a salesman calling on many businesses across the island. His dedication to his job was obvious when you could count on one hand not how many sick days he took in a year, but how many years he actually took a sick day. Norman enjoyed fishing over the years especially the traditional May 24th weekend with the Atkinson men and friends. Since his retirement Norm has gotten great enjoyment from ice fishing with Kent, Dave, Tom and dear friend since boyhood, Donnie Pond. Norm was known not only for always lending a hand to anyone working on their house, cottage or car but also being able to supply the tools and parts where needed. Norman always took great pride in both his yard in the Bay and also enjoyed puttering in his gardens at his beloved bungalow in Catalone. For 35 years Norm worked tirelessly to make "The Land" a second home for he and Donna to enjoy and share with their parents, children, grandchildren and friends. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 48 years, Donna (Atkinson); daughter, Cori (Darryl Morrison) of Cow Bay; son, Scott (Tammy), of Middle Sackville; Grampy's girls, Kaitlyn, Emma, Ashley and Gracie; "mother"-in-law, Vera; sister, Florence (Clare) Wadden; brothers and sisters-in-law, or as he thought of them as just brothers and sisters, Kent and Marion Atkinson and Dave and Linda Hillier and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Norm was predeceased by his brother and best friend, Robert 'Bobby' and sister-in-law, Gloria Ferguson; father-in-law, Allan and niece, Carolyn Ferguson. Visitation for the late Norman Ferguson will take place at Patten's Funeral Home, Glace Bay on Wednesday Aug. 5th from 2:-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6th at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church Glace Bay at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Obituary of Stephen Penney Penney, Stephen John June 8, 1931 – July 20, 2015 It is with sad hearts we share the July 20, 2015 passing of Stephen John Penney, loving husband, father and grandfather. Steve is forever remembered with love by his wife Christine, son Greg, daughter Page and grandchildren Myles, Claire & Simone Penney, and Linden & Nolan Stuart. He will be sadly missed by his brother Michael, sisters Alice, Joan & Margaret and extended family. Steve was predeceased by his parents Emily and William Penney, and his brothers Charles and James. As the third of seven children growing up in the steel and mining town of Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia during the 1930’s, his character was built on the understanding that ingenuity and creativity formed the foundation of success. He remembered that even before he started school, he found himself sitting on his back step looking at pebbles on the driveway, framing and enumerating “I have to go to school, I have to get a job, I have to get married, I have to have a family. I have to get started now.” He envisioned his future, and those images remained with him for a lifetime. After a brief employment experience at the Sydney Steel Plant, he joined the RCAF. Following basic training as an Air Frame Technician in Uplands, he exchanged his Quebec posting with a heartbroken Quebecois who would otherwise be enroute to Edmonton. Steve’s compassion for people was core to his personality. Some of the experiences he considered highlights of his RCAF years were his preparation to be a member of the honour guard for then Princess Elizabeth’s 1951 tour of Canada, the achievement of National Expert Marksman, and a timely temporary winter posting to Florida, sharing hangar space with US Air Force compatriots. Even in recent times when his memory was challenged, some of his best-told stories took place in airplane hangars. Those years formed an indelible stamp on his character, and he held incredible pride in his part in Canadian military history. After Steve left the air force, he explored opportunities in real estate and insurance. Soon his deep understanding of people and natural ability as a problem solver drew him to a career in social work with the Edmonton Crisis Unit and then as a Provincial Liaison Officer with Social Services and the Alberta Juvenile Court system, where he spent the remainder of his working career. Retirement simply meant expanding the farm, and getting to know every animal on “God’s green earth”. He was fanatical in his protection of ‘his people’, which included cattle, horses, pigs, geese, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats, and extended to deer, the bull moose, and a variety of mammal, avian and aquatic forms of wildlife…and of course the domesticated guard turkeys, who as he would say announced anyone and anything that came into the yard. Steve was a rabid reader, fascinated with anything in print: science fiction, relativity, black holes, philosophy, poetry, animals and plants. His love of cars and motorcycles meant endless adventures on Alberta roads. He had a penchant for story-telling, and imparted his philosophies to anyone with whom he engaged. He believed reality could be changed with a focused, well-intentioned thought. He had humility. He never feared failure. He was loyal and fiercely protective of all he loved. He was generous in giving advice and forgiving the advice of others. And he could communicate infinite thoughts with a single, raised eyebrow. With his skills, he could tame troublemakers, bridge breeches, or mend mechanical mysteries. With his speed and panache, somehow any problem seemed to collapse into some kind of colossal hoax, like a mirage he could remove with sleight of hand…and then his infectious laugh would be followed by the relieved laughter of those around him. If you ask what his greatest accomplishment was, he would tell you how, close to six decades ago, he found his bride, wove a web, and captured her in a mere two days. Steve and Christine built a forever path where barriers didn’t exist, sharing a life founded on unwavering principles and ethics. With their common love of all things, together they found beauty in anything and everything. We will be forever grateful for the brilliant work of surgeons Dr. David Williams, Dr. Kenneth Stewart and Dr. Robert Turnbull, who collectively gave us the priceless gift of close to twelve extra years, and allowed Steve the chance to know all his grandchildren. It was a privilege to have our family held in your expertise and care. More recently, our deep and sincere thanks to the Kipnes Centre for Veterans, to Dr. Kerry Pawluski and the caring and dedicated staff. And finally, our heartfelt thanks to the paramedics and emergency department professionals at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their compassion. At Steve's request, cremation has taken place and a private family ceremony held at Kitscoty, Alberta Cemetery, where the majestic sound of bagpipes will forever echo from there to the raw eastern coast of “Buddy’s” Cape Breton. We will be honoured to have you join us for a celebration of Steve's life on Thursday August 6, at the Norwood Royal Canadian Legion 11150-82 Street NW Edmonton, Alberta anytime between 2 and 5 p.m. Memorial donations may be sent to Kitscoty Community Church, Box 159, Kitscoty, Alberta T0B 2P0; Valour Place Society (www.valourplace.ca <http://www.valourplace.ca/>) c/o 11109-111 Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5G 0C6, or to the charity of your choice. Born on Nov. 17, 1998, he was the son of Kristen (Keeping) Murphy and Christian Murphy, Hillside, Boularderie and John Blair of River John, NS. An honours student entering grade 11 at Memorial High in Sydney Mines, Nick was an involved and talented basketball player. His love of the game was fostered by many dedicated coaches throughout his school years, playing for Boularderie Elementary, Dr. T.L. Sullivan Jr. High and Memorial Marauders as well as for Basketball Cape Breton and the Northside Rep Team. Proving to be an all-round athlete, in his first year of Track and Field (2015), he was scouted by Team Nova Scotia. Besides his parents, Nick is survived by sisters, Taylor Blair (Andrew Lund), Malagash, N.S.; Riagan and Jordan Murphy, Hillside Boularderie; brother, Andrew (Kelly) Blair, Old Barns, N.S.; grandparents, Abbey and Jeannie Keeping, Hillside Boularderie and Dora and Bill Murphy, Millville. He was predeceased by grandparents, Betty and Ross Blair, North River, N.S. Nick had very close relationships with his family, both at work and at play: wood splitting, snow shoveling or just hanging out with his grandparents next door, being a fun and loving big brother to his dear Riagan and Jordan; enjoying an amazing friendship with his best pal and sister, Taylor and her boyfriend Andrew Lund; enjoying the deep love and caring of brother Andrew and Kelly especially when they treated Nick and Taylor to an NBA game between Toronto and Nick’s idols, Miami Heat. Nick enjoyed all the comings and goings and great conversations driving to all the practices, games and tournaments with his dedicated stepdad, Christian. Nick always looked forward to spending the summers and holidays with his dad, John in Colchester County, going to horse shows and working on projects together. Words do not come easily when trying to describe the loving connection between Kristen and her darling son: closest confidante, biggest fan, like-minded in many ways and true heroes to each other. She was born 1924 in North Sydney, Cape Breton Island. Her caring parents were Louis Quirk of Newfoundland and Mary Campbell of Boisdale. Campbell ancestors sailed from the Hebrides islands of Scotland and settled Cape Breton in the 1830’s. Mrs. Fitzgerald was raised in a devout Catholic family of 10 children. After graduating St. Joseph High School, she worked at Jabalee’s market in North Sydney for a few years. Seeking more opportunity, she moved to Boston in 1952 to live with an aunt who had previously left Cape Breton in 1922. Mary’s first job in America was at a Woolworth department store. Shortly afterwards, she started working at Harvard University where she had a long career meeting interesting people from across the world until retiring in 2001. She married John F. Fitzgerald of Boston in 1960. The wedding was at Sacred Heart Church in Lexington with a honeymoon at Niagara Falls. Afterwards, they settled in Lexington, Mass and had three wonderful children. Mrs. Fitzgerald faced the biggest challenge of her life when her husband died in 1968. Instead of moving back to Nova Scotia she purchased a house in Lexington and raised her children in a loving family. She retired in her late 70s and kept busy with family and friends. Throughout her life Mary never forgot her Cape Breton roots. She enjoyed the rocky Maine seacoast and gathering with friends for tea and pastries to chat about latest news. A big thrill for her was shaking hands with John F. Kennedy in 1960 at a presidential campaign dinner in Boston. Also, she paid off the mortgage to own her home. She is survived by three children, Daniel and his wife Karen, James, and Janet; and five grandchildren, Ashley and her husband Shane Geib, Kayla and Daniel Fitzgerald, Alexandria and Victoria Gonzales. Also survived by her sister, Regina Decourcey of Sydney and Ronald Quirk of North Sydney, and her godchildren Elizabeth Livingstone-Pinto and her husband, Luiz and John Dugan, as well as many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters, Noella, Alice, Joan, Theresa; and four brothers, Louis, Daniel, John, and Peter. Special thanks to her long time friends Carol Rocco and James Sullivan, both of Lexington. Arrangements by Devito Funeral Home in Arlington, Massachusetts. "Storms never last...Your hand in mine stills the thunder." Reverend Malcolm MacDonell Born In: Hillsdale Inverness Co. Born: January 15th, 1919 Passed in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: July 25th, 2015 Reverend Malcolm MacDonell died at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, July 25, 2015. An exemplary priest and academic of the Diocese of Antigonish, Father MacDonell was born Jan. 15, 1919 in Hillsdale, Inverness County, son of the late William and Sarah (MacEachern) MacDonell. He received his early education at St. Ninian School and Port Hood Academy before enrolling at St. F.X. University from which he graduated with honours in 1938. Father MacDonell received his theological training at St. Basil Seminary, Toronto, and was ordained there on May 26, 1945, by Most Reverend Ildebrando Antoniutti, Apostolic Delegate to Canada. Father MacDonell was awarded a Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1945 and later did further studies at Queen’s University and the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies. In 1959 he combined post graduate work with an appointment as Rector of St. Pius X Seminary in Ottawa. His tenure as a teacher and administrator at St. F.X. University, however, was where his ministry as a priest was exercised to the fullest. He joined the faculty of the University after his ordination as a member of the history department and taught until 1964 when he was appointed Dean of Arts. Over the years he had combined his teaching with assignments as Alumni Director, Dean of Men, and Spiritual Director. As Dean of Arts he was instrumental in bringing about curriculum changes in the Faculty of Arts, making the program a more flexible and adaptable curriculum. In 1970, Father MacDonell was appointed president of St. F.X. University and remained in that position for eight years. He led the university through some of the most difficult years in its history when student dissent disrupted the campus, and when government economics made grants to universities more difficult to acquire. His personal relationship with students, parents, staff and visitors helped to maintain and enhance the university’s reputation for warm hospitality and personal interest in staff and students. He was the essence of what St. F.X. stands for and a staunch advocate of “whatsoever things are true”. He received much recognition from both the secular world and the academic community. He was one of only two churchmen appointed by the Federal Government to the Canadian Centennial Conference; was chairman of the Association of Atlantic Universities; was a founding member of the Canadian Human Rights Commission. He was a recipient of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal, was awarded Doctor of Laws Degrees from St. Thomas, St. F.X. and Memorial Universities and a Doctor of Letters Degree from University College of Cape Breton. Throughout his life Father MacDonell maintained a love for and interest in the Gaelic language - the medium of some of his finest and most humorous oratory. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Alex; sister, Annie Gillis and two brothers, in infancy. He is survived by four sisters, Sister Margaret, C.N.D., Sydney, Mary Boyd, Jessie Murphy, Elizabeth, all of Michigan; sister-in-law, Theresa, Judique and numerous dearly loved nieces and nephews. Visitation at Morrison Hall, St. F.X. Wednesday, July 29th, from 1-4 p.m., and at St. Andrew’s Church, Judique, from 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30th, with Bishop Brian Dunn presiding with Diocesan clergy concelebrating. www.MacIsaacs.ca <http://www.macisaacs.ca/>. EXTRA - Ottawa, Ontario by Laura Jean Grant - CBPost Trailblazing MP Flora MacDonald dies North Sydney native remembered as great humanitarian, accomplished politician A trailblazer for women in politics, Flora MacDonald is being remembered for much more than her time in the House of Commons. MacDonald, a native of North Sydney, died early Sunday in Ottawa at the age of 89. First elected as a Progressive Conservative in 1972, MacDonald was a member of Parliament for the Ontario riding of Kingston and the Islands for 15 years and served in three key cabinet positions — secretary of state for external affairs, minister of employment and immigration and minister of communications. After leaving political office, MacDonald dedicated herself to humanitarian endeavours, travelling to more than 100 countries on behalf of numerous international aid organizations. Her brother Ron MacDonald of North Sydney said he last saw his sister about three weeks ago in Ottawa, noting she had recently been dealing with a number of medical issues. Ron said his sister excelled in life from an early age — she did very well in school, was a class leader, and was also a “very good athlete,” participating in a number of sports in the area including volleyball, speedskating, and badminton. She also had a keen interest in baseball. Throughout her career, Ron said his sister was motivated by a desire to help people, particularly those living in Third World countries. “She enjoyed being elected but she really thought she’d accomplish more working in Third World countries and that was her big love — that and Scottish music, of course,” he said. Ron said he will miss hearing his sister’s thoughts on the important issues of the day. “She was on top of so many things, internationally, whether it was the Mideast or South Africa or Afghanistan, she had a great understanding of things,” he said. “She was very well-read.” Close friend Lowell Murray, a New Waterford native and retired senator who now lives in Margaree, said MacDonald achieved much in her life. “Three years after she was elected member of Parliament she was a candidate for the leadership of the PC party, and three years after that again she was foreign minister in Joe Clark’s government, and she started out as a bank teller in North Sydney,” he said. “There’s never been anybody quite like her in Canadian politics.” As external affairs minister, MacDonald was at the forefront of two major issues — dealing with the Iran hostage crisis that began in 1979, and, together with fellow minister Ron Atkey and Clark, spearheading efforts to welcome 60,000 Vietnamese refugees to Canada. Through it all, MacDonald never forgot her roots, visiting home often and keeping informed on the issues affecting the island. “She was a great Cape Bretoner, she really was, she loved this place,” said Murray, noting she also loved a good Cape Breton ceilidh. “I can see her yet stepdancing to fiddle music in our living room. She was always great company and that’s what I’ll miss about her.” Murray, who will deliver a eulogy at MacDonald’s funeral when it is held in the coming days, said his friend was simply interested in everything. MacDonald’s humanitarian efforts including chairing the International Development Research Centre, the World Federalists of Canada, and serving on the Carnegie Commission on the Prevention of Deadly Conflict. She also served on numerous boards including the Canadian Council for Refugees, CARE Canada, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, and Friends of the National Library. For her work, MacDonald received numerous awards and acknowledgements — she is a companion of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the Pearson Peace Medal, a member of the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Ontario, and the recipient of several honorary degrees, including one from the University College of Cape Breton (now Cape Breton University) in 2003. In an interview with the Cape Breton Post at the time, MacDonald said she was thrilled to receive such an honour at home. “I’ve received a number of honorary degrees but this one is particularly special because I got to come back to Cape Breton. It has to be at the top of the list,” she said. Ron said funeral arrangements are still being completed. The funeral will take place in Ottawa but she will be buried in Cape Breton.
