Helen Rebecca (Miller) Chisholm Born: October 29th, 1918 Passed in: Nevada Valley Passed on: August 15th, 2015 Helen Rebecca (Miller) Chisholm, 96, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, as the result of a stroke. Born in Brook Village, on Oct. 29, 1918, she was the youngest child of Lewis Levi and Margaret (MacAskill) Miller. She is survived by her only daughter, Carole Margaret Chisholm, Nevada Valley, with whom she resided. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Albert Warren Chisholm, in 1991. She was also predeceased by her four brothers, Irving, Norman, John and Walter and her sister, Irene and two sisters-in-law, Pauline Miller and Ethel Miller-Schevink. Besides her daughter, she is survived by her two nephews, Paul (Suzanne) Miller, Port Hawkesbury, and James (JoAnn) Miller, Sudbury, Ont.; her grandnieces, Melissa (Aaron) Oakley, Orlando, Fla., and Molly Jo Miller, Sudbury, Ont.; a grandnephew, Timothy Miller, Port Hawkesbury and her great-grandnieces, Payton and Isla Oakley. A life-long member of the Jehovah’s Witness faith, she was a member of the Baddeck Congregation at the time of her death. Her faith gave her an unwavering hope in the resurrection and an unshakable inner peace and she remained calm and focused, even in the most difficult times of her life. Her faith was exemplary. She "pursued righteousness, godly devotion, faith, love, endurance and mildness of temper." She was kind and considerate to others, a good neighbour and a loyal friend. She had style and grace and always knew the appropriate thing to do or say because she was so perceptive of other people’s needs. She possessed an analytical mind and lived her life with mathematical precision because she truly loved and understood math. As a child, she excelled academically. Upon finishing high school, and being too young to be accepted into Teacher’s College, she took a secretarial diploma from Empire Business College, Sydney and a physical training certificate of qualification. She then enrolled in and graduated from the Provincial Normal College, Truro, Class of 1939 (1st Rank). She enjoyed playing basketball at PNC. She acquired additional certificates in shorthand, bookkeeping and accounting at Success Business College, Truro and a Nova Scotia Dept. of Education Primary certificate. She became certified as a business education specialist and, in the 1970s, she updated her teaching license by taking the N. S. Summer School block program. Her teaching career took her on a diverse path: she taught as a first-year teacher in Roseburn, Inverness Co. She then was teaching vice-principal at the Empire Business College, Sydney. She taught night school at Sydney Academy and, during the Second World War, taught typing and shorthand to the Canadian Armed Forces at Victoria Park Base, Sydney. She taught a Civil Service course to train secretaries for Ottawa and service in the federal government. She was married to Albert Chisholm of Nevada Valley on Aug. 18, 1942. When she and her husband and daughter moved to Montreal in 1947, she taught for three years at the O’Sullivan College of Business Administration. Returning to Cape Breton , she later taught in the Business Education department of Mabou Consolidated School (1965-1971), the school from which she retired. Helen was an avid reader and she enjoyed playing games (Jeopardy, Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit) and did countless jigsaw puzzles over the years. At the time of her death, she was still doing the daily crossword puzzle from the paper. As a young girl, she was particularly accomplished at the crafts of knitting, crochet, tatting and rug-hooking but didn’t like to sew. She enjoyed watching several sports on TV. She enjoyed music in a variety of forms: growing up, she played 'Scotch music' on her violin and was known to be one of the neighbourhood’s best step-dancers; she also enjoyed listening to classical and pop music and really loved the ballet. She had a particular fondness for figure-skating, enjoying its skillfulness, music and artistry and had attended many live performances and competitions over 35 years. When her health prevented her from attending in person, she would avidly follow the yearly competitions through the media. A reader and writer of poetry, one of Helen’s favourite poems by W. B. Yeats , "When You Are Old", sums up her long life, well lived: "When you are old and gray and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace; And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you And loved … your changing face." Visitation for Helen Chisholm will be in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh on Wednesday from 2-9 p.m. A funeral service for Helen will be held on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015 at 2 p.m. from the funeral chapel, with Mr. Robert Lambie, overseer of the Baddeck Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service in Elmwood Cemetery, Hillsborough. Donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Central Inverness County Palliative Care Society, Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Since mom loved flowers, flowers are also gratefully accepted. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com <http://www.haverstocks.com/>.

Kathleen Mary (Orrell) Capstick Born In: Wigan England Born: May 20th, 1918 Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: August 16th, 2015 It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Kathleen (Orrell) Capstick, 97, of Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at home, surrounded by all her loving family. Born in Wigan, England, on May 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Kathleen (Curly) Orrell. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She came to Canada when she was eight years old, and remained here for the past 89 years, where she lived and raised a family of nine. Ma was the ‘Matriarch’ of our family and in her early years also took on the role of father to us kids. She was the thread that kept our family together, and always stood in the shadows so others could shine. She gave everything and asked for nothing in return. She instilled in us our values, morals and ethics, and gave us the tools to become the people we are today. She devoted and sacrificed all her life to ensuring all her children ‘got what we needed and not always what we wanted.’ She gave her love to God and her family, and she loved each one of us in her own special way. She was very holy and spiritual, and turned to the Lord in times of trouble and hardship, and the good Lord knows she had more than her fair share of hardships over the years. She was a devout Catholic and an active member of Holy Family Parish (formerly St. Pius X) until the time of her illness. She believed her strong faith in the Lord and prayer was what gave her strength. Her glass was always ‘half full’ because she always insisted on giving the other half to someone in need. She was an angel on Earth, and we all learned so much from her. She was so gentle and kind and taught us to love unconditionally. She had a pure heart of gold. She was a founding member of the Sydney Mines Memory Lane Fun Band, and always looked forward to going to the guest homes and community events, entertaining with her beautiful singing voice, and the singing of two of her many favourite songs; One Day At A Time, and Daisy A Day. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the RCL Branch 008 and Sydney Mines Pensioners Club, where she was very active and held different positions. She was an avid fan of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and the Toronto Blue Jays, and very seldom ever missed listening to the Screaming Eagles on the radio, and watching the Blue Jays on TV… she was soooo looking forward to the World Series starting this fall, but will be watching from the heavens this year, we know. Left to mourn are her three daughters, Sheila (Bobby) Bradley, Kathy and Mary Margaret, a special daughter, Viv, and her sons, Kevin (Ann), Albert (Eileen), Michael (Kathy) and Joey (Karen). She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; a special grandson, Willie; two daughters-in-law, Mary (John) and Mary (Tommy); son-in-law, Cliff MacIntyre; family friend, John Glogowski; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William; sons, John and Tommy; grandsons, Shane and Steven; brothers, Joe, John, Albert and Teddy; and a sister, Mary Knight. Special thanks to Fr. James Oliver for coming to visit Ma at home while she was sick, and giving her the Sacrament of the Sick. Thanks also to the Eucharistic Ministers who came to her house every week with the Sacrament of Holy Communion, especially Harry and Norma Blinkhorn, Dr. Doug Kohlsmith for his compassionate care for Ma over the years, and palliative care and the VON, who cared for Ma and guided the family over the past several weeks. Visitation for Kathleen Capstick will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com <http://www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com/>. Dougie loved being surrounded by friends and family, the more the merrier. He was a cherished guest at a party — always talking to everyone and instantly making new friends. Never one to turn down a game of crib, he tried his entire life to get the perfect 29 but was happy playing even if he got skunked. Dougie was a longtime member of Masonic Lodge, Mariners #80 of Louisbourg. The family would like to thank all their caring neighbours who allowed Dougie to stay at home until the last few days of his full and rewarding life. The family would also like to thank the doctors and dedicated nurses at the Chest Clinic and in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Lung Association of Nova Scotia. Cremation has taken place. MACLEOD, Linda Marie (Boutilier Ronayne) Sydney Mines As Mum would say “I was a very lucky little girl you know because I grew up in the red row in Sydney Mines.” Faith, family, and roots were very important to our Mum. Growing up in our house meant going to church on Sunday, family drives, being taught to treat others with kindness and respect and realizing that our parents loved us first and foremost. Your soul is created through the story of your lifetime. How do you put into words the story of your soul? We can tell you about a little girl who lost her daddy way too young, a young lady who had to quit school because her mother was a widow, to a mother of four children who pulled over to the side of the road one day, knocked on the door of a house on Brooklyn Avenue that was for sale and asked what it would take to make that house a home for her family. To a grandmother who had an undying love for her grandchildren and in the end, a great grandmother “Grammie Two” to a little boy named Emmett, who will get to hear about her through stories his mother and grandmother will tell. She loved her job; she worked many years at St. Rita Hospital in Sydney, with a group of women that all became kindred spirits for life. Mum was able to become a part of anything and everything she loved, from choir at the church to creating a full social outing just getting her hair done every Saturday. Her fun side from dancing polkas in the kitchen where she couldn’t boil water (thank God for dad), to Jim Reeves on a daily basis, and highlights such as “I love you dear, but my show is on, you have to be quiet now.” This is a very small piece of who our Mum was. Linda is survived by her four children, Cecil Jr. (Louise), Cindy (Kevin), Margie (Bobby) and Hughena (Stan); her grandchildren, Ashley M., Kevin (Laura), Ashley (Gloria), Alex ( Jason), Taylor, Nick, Megan and greatgrandson, Emmett Harold James. She is also survived by her brother, Johnny; her sister, Theresa, by many nieces and nephews whom she held close to her heart and her best friend, Cecil Boutilier. She was predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Margaret (MacDougall) Ronayne; brothers, Kenny, Hugh and Alec; her two sisters-in-law and husband, Donald MacLeod. Visitation for Linda MacLeod will be on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Shore Road. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially the nurses in the ICU. Donations can be made to any local animal shelters, as Mum loved her fur babies. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com <http://www.twcurry.com/>. Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. - Mary Elizabeth Frye LEWIS, Kathleen (Hill) Point Edward It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear Kathleen on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital An Cala Unit, after a courageous 13 year battle with cancer. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Margaret (Nicholson) and the late Hanson “Poppa Doo” Hill. Kathleen graduated from Riverview Rural High School in 1983 and from UCCB in 1987 with a diploma in Business Management. Family was of the utmost importance to Kathleen. She was very proud of her daughters and the young women they have become. She and her husband Eric had a special bond that saw them through their 27 years of marriage. Her 4-legged “children” were extra special to her giving her many hours of pleasure. Her little boy Chaika always put a smile on her face. In addition to her devotion to family, the management of Alderdale Greens Golf Course was a huge part of her life. With Eric at her side, it was a dream they built together. Kathleen had a zest for life. She put her whole heart and soul into every endeavor. She was a kind and caring individual with a strong work ethic. She had a mischievous side that resulted in practical jokes when you least expected it. She and her sidekick Susan could be found causing havoc on any occasion. Kathleen had a passion for everything near and dear to her heart. She was an avid Eagles fan having season passes for many years. She enjoyed golfing and the outdoors. It was extra special when she shared these activities with her brothers. In recent months her bird feeders gave her great pleasure. Capturing memories through her family photos was a hobby she always loved. Her diagnosis with cancer made her stronger in many ways. Whenever she had a few good days or good weeks, she never passed up the opportunity to try new things. She enjoyed travelling near and far. She relished her trips to New Glasgow with Susan and her family trips to Florida. Her visits to Toronto to see Wes were special as well as her trips to Las Vegas, where she thoroughly enjoyed all the entertainment. Besides her mother, Margaret and her stepdad, Colin Beaton; Kathleen is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Eric; their daughters, Leah, Masstown, Lindsey, Point Edward, Arielle, Coxheath. Mary had a difficult year and through it all remained positive and kept her sense of humour. Mary was accepting of her journey. Mary was a loving wife to Donald, her true love; was the matriarch of her family; a strong, giving sister; a kind and generous aunt and grandaunt; an educator; an avid volunteer and a person of unwavering faith. Mary grew up in Beaver Cove, daughter of the late Joseph Allen and Margaret Ann MacMullin. She attended Normal College in Truro and then began her lengthy teaching career. Mary taught in Millville, Boisdale, Princeville, Port Hawkesbury (both elementary and senior elementary) and Orangedale. Mary retired after 34 years of service. Anyone who encountered Mary knew she was a believer in fostering and modelling strong academics; citizenship; volunteerism and faith in the lives of her students, her family and friends. Mary worked hard to support her community. Mary worked with the Glendale Fiddlers Festival in the early years and then with the Glendale Concerts in the years that followed. She played a key role in the matters of the parish for most of her life in Glendale. Mary never forgot a birthday or an anniversary. She loved gardening with Donald and had a very green thumb. She loved to share their vegetables and preserves. She was a talented tole painter and loved to have a reason to let the elementary teacher in her decorate, whether it be a community hall function or a shower for someone. She wrote many addresses for many people over the years. Mary had a way to walk you through the good and bad with a rhyme or two and leave you feeling happy in the end. Mary was an active supporter of community events. She attended her weekly bingo games, loved a good crib tournament and enjoyed a swim at the beach in Beaver Cove with her beach buddies – her sister and sister-in-law. Mary and Donald were regular attendees of summer concerts around the island and could often be found at Brooke Village for the Monday night square dances. Mary was always in-tune with her family.
