Carmichael North Sydney It is with broken hearts, that the family of Gordon Walter Carmichael announce his peaceful passing at the age of 90, on Monday, April 18, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital. One of the four boys of the late J. George and Grace (Jackson) Carmichael, Gordon was born in North Sydney on Aug. 7, 1925, and was raised above the family store, Jackson’s Market. In his younger days he delivered groceries by cart and pony to the store’s customers. Later in the family tradition he operated, with his brother George, the grocery store which became one of the IGA chain. In 1955, following a short courtship, he married Doris (McCandlish), a marriage that lasted 60 years. Together they raised six children. Each summer, Gordon would bundle the family into the car and with the travel trailer he built hitched to the back, would hit the road exploring this great land of ours, often with Doris’ father along for the ride. When the grocery store closed in 1962, he became a civil servant working for Canada Manpower Centre. Included in his duties were weekly trips to Baddeck and bi-weekly trips to Ingonish to set up satellite offices, often with a daughter or two in tow for company. Later he became the manager of the Job Creation branch in Sydney. Following retirement he spent many hours helping his children with renovations to their homes. A jack-of-all-trades, his help was invaluable. Gordon had a love of all things mechanical. Cars were one of his favourite things, which was evident by the many makes and models that he owned over his lifetime. He enjoyed purchasing a car that had been in a collision and restoring it to its former glory. It has been said that “those Carmichael boys love their cars.” When he could no longer do physical work on cars he would research vehicles from his computer chair. He took great joy watching his son Charles restore a 1967 army jeep, evident by the smile on his face when he went for his first ride. Woodworking was another of his passions. He made many clocks over the years including a grandmother clock for each of his children, often re-purposing the wood from antiques such as pump organs. A number of other special people were also recipients of his clocks. He enjoyed repairing and bringing new sounds from restoring the sounds to mantle clocks, earning him his nickname “Tick, Tock, the Clock Doc”. Ever to be up on technology, he embraced the computer world from its early days of punch cards to his recent acquisition of an iPad. Through this technology he was able to watch his grandson’s wedding in real time five years ago and has been able to see and talk to his great grandchildren over the Internet. A true family man he could often be seen with one or more of his grandchildren, teaching them life lessons. He loved to get together with his Carmichael and Jackson cousins to discuss family history and genealogy. In recent years he enjoyed attending the Adult Daycare at Harbourview Hospital, three days a week with his brother George, where he loved getting acquainted with the other attendees and staff and enjoyed all the games and activities. His greatest passion in life was his love for Christ and the knowledge that he has life eternal in his Heavenly home. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, serving many roles, Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, choir member, Sunday School teacher and doing whatever needed to be done. He enjoyed his time as a Gideon passing out New Testaments to students in Grade 5, preaching in various churches on the island and spending time with his fellow Gideons. Gordon is survived by his wife Doris, his six children, daughters, Nancy, Donna (Brian), Vera (Brent), Judy, Ruth Ann (Howard) and son, Charles (Tanya); his 13 grandchildren, Becky, Gordie, Elizabeth, Joshua, Caleb, Shawn, Erica, Lindsay, Christopher, Brendon, Jayden, Adam and Gabriel; five greatgrandchildren, Lily, Athena, Sydney, John and Brook. He is also survived by his brother, George; sisters-in-law, Mildred Carmichael and Audrey (Arthur) Frogley; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Vernon and James (Blanche); son-in-law, Douglas Hyde; sisters-in-law, Ruth Carmichael and Marion (Stanley) Lake; and his father and mother-in-law, Charles and Vera McCandlish. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Paul Hickey and Lori, the staff of Harbourview Adult Day Care, the heart function clinic and the staff of EHS for the wonderful care that Gordon received over the years. Your kindness has been truly appreciated. A funeral service for Gordon will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. John Hannem officiating. A time to meet with the family over refreshments will follow in Carmichael Hall. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com <http://www.wjdooley.com/>.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Marc Patrice Boudreau, 30 years old, in his apartment in Bedford, Nova Scotia on April 14th, 2016. Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of Patrice and Fedora (Aucoin). Many knew Marc, or P’tit Marc as many referred to him as, for his amazing talents as a fiddler and fine entertainer. As Marc was growing up in Point Cross, there was never a dull moment. He was always juggling between his love for riding his dirt bike or four-wheeler, playing sports (golf and especially hockey), being part of La Swing du Suête dance troupe, the band Anonym, school, hanging around with his friends and he was always ready for the next opportunity to perform on stage. Little did his parents know when they gave him his first fiddle, at the age of eight years old, that Marc would turn out to be a well-known entertainer, playing alongside people that he looked up to, including some of his idols: Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Howie MacDonald and numerous others. Graduating from École NDA in 2003, Marc pursued his studies at Le Collège de l’Acadie in Méteghan, Nova Scotia. He graduated in 2004 as a paramedic and worked passionately at this career until 2011. Much involved in his music at this stage, he decided to take it more seriously and played frequently. He also worked for Primerica as district manager in Halifax where he took the Life Qualification Program and obtained his license to sell life insurance. Marc’s passion and dream of becoming a professional musician did not happen overnight. It was hard work but he kept at it until it was just perfect. No stranger to the stage, even at a very young age, Marc was a crowd pleaser and always captured the audience with his incredible charm and fine talent. Fans loved when Marc would play a tune for the others to dance to and join in, step dancing while continuing to play his fiddle. Marc’s stage presence and command of music at a very young age made him a popular musician in various concerts and ceilidhs. He was very proud of his CD Recordings: Steppin’ It Up and Marc Boudreau –Live at the Doryman Pub as well the recordings he made with other musicians over the years. To know Marc was to love him. His smile and joie de vivre were contagious, and through his music and kind heart he touched the souls of many in his short time with us. His first love was the fiddle and family gatherings. He loved driving and cars, cheering for his favourite hockey team (Les Montréal Canadiens), snowmobiling, playing cribbage and cards with his buddies, running La Mi-Carême and was a natural with children and enjoyed spending time with Jonah Mae and other young relatives and friends. Marc was a beloved son, big brother and stepdad. Deeply saddened as we say goodbye, he leaves behind his parents and his brother Guy (Lorna), his companion Megan Shepard and her daughter Jonah Mae. He will be greatly missed by his many uncles, aunts and special cousins. Marc was part of a broader musical family and his passing will be deeply felt by the Celtic community of Cape Breton and the Acadian region. He was predeceased by his grandparents Paulite and Julitte Boudreau and Johnny and Marie-Zabine Aucoin. Visitation took place on Monday, April 18th at the Cheticamp Funeral Home and the funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 19th at St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. After the funeral, everyone is welcome to join the family for a small reception and Celebration of Life for Marc at the Doryman Pub and Grill. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, as well as your charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services. Condolences may be sent to cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca <mailto:cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca>. Dad was born in Dominion June 15, 1948, to Charles and Myrtle (Goodwin) Corbett. He was predeceased by both his parents; his brother, Gregory and his sister, Annabel Golden. Wayne retired early from his employment with Maritime Paper Products Dartmouth after 30 years, in 2008. If you asked him, he’d tell you he was a “Professional Boxer.” Wayne was a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose sense of humour got him and those around him through times both good and bad, and he loved to tell “stories” that he fabricated just to see how long it would take you to realize he’d made them up. Wayne loved the water and made sure he got at least one swim in every summer. He shared with his children his favourite childhood fishing spot in the Mira. Wayne was an avid baseball player in his youth. He played for the “World Famous” Dominion Hawks and coached softball with his brother-in-law Roy in Welland, Ont., in the late 1960s. He also enjoyed watching both his children play ball and was always there to cheer them on. Wayne loved to watch hockey on T.V., especially his favourite team the Wings, and could be found at Robin’s on Braemar daily. Wayne had a soft spot for those in need, and could be counted on to give something to every charity. If he saw you needed a pair of shoes, he’d give you one of his, and he’d offer a ride, a cup of coffee, or just a bit of conversation to someone he felt needed it. Born in Chéticamp, on April 27, 1985, he was the son of Patrice and Fedora (Aucoin). Many knew Marc, or as many referred to him as P’tit Marc, for his amazing talents as a fiddler and fine entertainer. As Marc was growing up in Point Cross, there was never a dull moment. He was always juggling between his love for riding his dirt bike or four-wheeler, playing sports especially hockey and golf, being part of La Swing du Suête dance troupe, the band Anonym, school, hanging around with his friends and always ready for the next opportunity to perform on stage. Little did his parents know when they gave him his first fiddle at the age of eight years old, that Marc would turn out to be a well-known entertainer, playing alongside people that he looked up to, including some of his idols, Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Howie MacDonald and numerous others. He also worked for Primerica as district manager in Halifax where he took the Life Qualification Program and obtained his licence to sell life insurance. Marc’s passion and dream of becoming a professional musician did not happen overnight. It was hard work but he kept at it until it was just perfect. No stranger to the stage, even at a very young age, Marc was a crowd pleaser and always captured the audience with his incredible charm and fine talent. Fans loved when Marc would play a tune for the others to dance to and then he would join in, step dancing while continuing to play his fiddle. Marc’s stage presence and command of music at a very young age made him a popular musician in various concerts and ceilidhs. He was very proud of his CD Recordings; Steppin’ It Up and Marc Boudreau –Live at the Doryman Pub as well as other musicians that he recorded with over the years. To know Marc was to love him. His smile and “joie de vivre” was contagious and through his music and kind heart, he touched the souls of many in his short time with us. His first love was the fiddle and family gatherings. He loved driving and cars, cheering for his favourite hockey team; Les Montréal Canadiens, snowmobiling, playing cribbage and cards with his buddies, running La Mi-Carême and was a natural with children and enjoyed spending time with Jonah Mae and other young relatives and friends. Marc was a beloved son, big brother and stepdad. Deeply saddened as we say good-bye, he leaves behind his parents and his brother Guy (Lorna), his companion Megan Shepard and her daughter, Jonah Mae. He will be greatly missed by his many uncles, aunts and special cousins. Marc was part of a broader musical family; his passing will be deeply felt by the Celtic community of Cape Breton and the Acadian region. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Paulite and Julitte Boudreau and Johnny and Marie-Zabine Aucoin. Visitation will take place on Monday, April 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Chéticamp Funeral Home and the funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church, Chéticamp with Fr. Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. After the funeral, everyone is welcome to join the family for a small reception and Celebration of Life for Marc at the Doryman Pub & Grill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, as well as your charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chéticamp Funeral Services. Condolences may be sent to: cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca <mailto:cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca>. Jackie, I now believe Flag Staff was the point where New Victoria starts or like Alex Miller suggested, the Fort Petrie area. Looking at the names in the census and the land grant maps for that time frame, it comes pretty close. -----Original Message----- From: ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ns-cape-breton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jacqueline Gallant via Sent: Sunday, April 17, 2016 10:16 PM To: Thom McCabe Cc: NS-CAPE-BRETON-List Subject: Re: [NS-CB] Flag Staff can you tell me? In the 1838 census one area I am working in defines the census was taken from " Ellison's Bar to the Flag Staff". I know at that time Ellison's Bar was what is now known as South Bar sand bar (or the south bar of Sydney river) but have no idea where Flag Staff would have been. I believe it encompassed the New Victoria/Lingan area by some of the names listed. Has anyone ever come across the name/place Flag Staff in relation to an area between Sydney and Dominion ( I am making it a large area intentionally as I have no idea where it was) but know it was at least to Lingan. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Thom

Surviving are her sister’s son and daughter, Harvey Jardine (Margaret) and Bonita Steeves (Brian) (nee Jardine); her brother’s sons and daughters, Earl Were (Liz), Carol White (Rev. Roy), Fred Were (Beverly), Albert Were (Beverly), Evelyn Roy (George), Ronald Were (Donna), Susan Slaunwhite (David) and Philip Were (Sandra); also a cousin in England, Alice Malpass; as well as, many grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. After graduating as an RN at Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow in 1934, she married her beloved Arthur Fraser and they moved to Sydney, where Arthur was employed as a chemist at Sydney Steel. They were married for 57 years. After Arthur’s death, Edith continued to live on the corner of Kings Road and Castle Drive and, for three years, had part time/full time home care. The last two years of her life she lived in Dartmouth with Hazel and Ron Hector, where she was given exemplary full time care and love. In addition to her family members, who live mainly in the Halifax area, plus three in Ontario and New Brunswick, Edith had many visitors and support from her neighbours and church family. Edith was a longstanding, active member of First United Church and a director of Sydney Bairncroft Ladies Auxiliary until her death. On her 100th birthday, she was honoured by her church with a birthday party and church service the next day devoted to her life. She was picked up by a limousine, led by an antique car, and walked into the church on a red carpet that the queen had walked on. Edith loved the Royal family and many thought she resembled Queen Elizabeth. A piper piped her into the church. She was the oldest customer of the Royal Bank in Sydney and was honoured to cut the ribbon for the opening of their new building. Edith loved animals and the outdoors. She and her late husband toured extensively with their trailer with campground association members. Until recent years, she took road trips to Halifax for Christmas and other gatherings. Berry picking was a favourite activity, even after she celebrated her 100th birthday. A memorial gathering will be held at Hope United Church (formerly Edgewood-Oxford), 3055 Connaught Ave. in Halifax on Thursday, April 28, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. (driveway off Young Street). Funeral service and committal will be held in Sydney, N.S. at a later date. Charitable donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Bairncroft Foundation, c/o Rev. Mountains of laundry kept her large family in clean clothes. She also guarded over her children with determination to keep everyone healthy, well behaved, warm, clean, educated and respectful. Nellie loved to sing and dance. She and Nelson hosted many parties and the entertainment included singing together with friends, accompanied by Nelson on guitar. She loved the Newfoundland music she grew up with and sang along with country music turned up nice and loud while she kept the house spic and span. Summer meant loading the crew into one of a series of Chevys and heading to the bungalow in Margaree. The place was small, and for many years did not have running water or electricity but it could hold numerous cousins and friends. Over the years it was an extension of her hospitality and love of family and friends. So many games of cards and laughter on evenings and rainy days. Both Nellie and Nelson loved Newfoundland. For many years they made trips there, often with her brother Mike and his wife Sally. They visited family and made friends all over the island. They also made a network of friends across Canada through their involvement with seniors’ organizations. In the sixties they worked to help build the local fledgling NDP party. They are very proud to have taken Tommy Douglas and his wife on a picnic to Louisbourg where they drank tea and admired the ocean. Lester Pearson also had tea in the house on Cabot Street while campaigning against Diefenbaker. The kids still had to go to schools on those days. Born: June 9th, 1962 Passed on: April 12th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joyce Aylward. Joyce passed peacefully at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 2016, surrounded by her loving husband John and children Suzi, Charlie, Jillian, and Jamie, her mother, Mabel and sister-in-law, Patty. Joyce’s family was and continues to be built on the foundations of love, laughter and togetherness. They had many adventures through camping and sailing to traveling the world. Her family will cherish these memories for a lifetime to come. Born in, P.E.I. June 9, 1962, Joyce cherished her Island family and upbringing. She loved the red sands and beauty of the island, and proudly wore many Cows t-shirts. She shared her love of the island with John, their children and grandchildren by spending many summers at the cabin in China Point as the kids grew up. Joyce went on to attend Dalhousie University, graduating with a Bachelor of Social Work from the Maritime School of Social Work. Joyce was a social worker by nature, and thoroughly enjoyed her career starting in P.E.I., then Halifax and on to Cape Breton. Her work and her team mates brought her great joy. Joyce was a proud woman of sound principals. She never looked for a fight but rarely backed down from a battle that would see someone being mistreated. It is how she lived her life and how she confronted her illness. She and John instilled these values in their children and grandchildren. As a couple they were very active in supporting community activities, valuing giving back to a place that has given them both so much. Joyce enjoyed the simpler things in life, such as time with her family and sailing with John, members of the Asaph family, and friends on the Bras D’or Lake. She enjoyed martial arts, traveling to places such as the United States, Europe and the Caribbean, but she loved shopping! Her love for music transcended through the years, and she was especially content reading a good book while John practiced another piece of music. She is survived by husband, John; children, Suzie, Charlie, Jillian and Jamie; mother, Mabel England; brothers, Robert, Stephen (Patty), Wayne (Kathy) and David; grandchildren, Cara and Carter; aunts, Joyce, Polly, Joanne; mother-in-law, Theresa; sister-in-law, Deb (Jim) Merit and her finest friend, Lynn Knott. Her smile would light up any room and her laugh was infectious. She loved reading, doing her daily crosswords, listening to music, marveling at the beauty of nature, especially the hummers that came to her feeders every summer.
