Bernie Michalik was a Titan: a romantic, a musician (he played the alto sax like nobody’s business), a puppeteer, a sausage maker (he made the best kielbasa west of Warsaw), an athlete, a thinker, a trickster, and a raconteur. Most important, he was a loving husband to his wife, Jeanie – Ma – for 51 years, until her death in 2012; and for we three, he was a father who loved us tenaciously. Bernie doted on his grandkids too. He gifted Liam and Sophie, Marcus and Joe, with song, whimsy, and his undivided attention. Bernie treated his daughter-in-law Tracey Williams as if she were his own flesh and blood. Our father lost his eldest brother Joey in a mining accident in 1954; he never forgot him. Bernie was a loyal sibling to his sisters Ces and Carmella, who predeceased him, and to his brother Eddie and his sister Frannie, who still carry the Stanley Street torch. Bernie also loved his step-siblings, Eddie, Cathy, and John Melnick. Eddie Melnick was as much his blood brother as his stepbrother: the two of them dug out the basement of 286 Douglas; they made sausage; they tried to make sense of the play of Da’s hapless Maple Leafs. All of this they did together. As for brothers, our father was devoted to Brother Joe – Matt Lasowski – his friend from early childhood. Bernie admired Matt for his faith and his decency. They were twins of a sort. Each of them transformed hardship into dignity. The lamp of Brother Joe’s faith is shining over Bernie even now. His many cousins, nieces and nephews brought him joy. His neighbours did too. Bernie Michalik lived life to the fullest. He was on the go till the last night he got under the covers and turned out the light. He revered the past, but kept his eye on the future. He loved life; he cared for people. He was part Foghorn Leghorn, part Joltin’ Joe – he was 100 percent a gentleman. We will cherish his memory always. We will honour him by loving life, by loving others, by remaining inquisitive, and by being open to everyone and everything. We love you, Da. We miss you. Your kids Eleanor, Bernie, and Eddie Michalik... Cremation has taken place. Visitation is Tuesday from 2-4, 7- 9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Fr. Leo Boone is Wednesday 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel followed by a reception. Interment at a later date in Forest Haven Cemetery. Donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca <http://www.vjmcgillivray.ca/>. Lisa Michelle Horwill Born In: L'Ardoise Born: January 1st, 1967 Passed in: Rockdale Passed on: May 5th, 2016 It’s with great sadness that we announce the death of our wife, daughter, mother, sister, and friend Lisa which occurred on May 5, 2016 at the Strait Richmond Hospital. Born on July 1, 1967, Lisa was the daughter of Louie and Loretta (Sampson) Boudreau, both of L’Ardoise. Like the rest of us, Mom found her spot within the family business, waitressing at the Cosy Corner and cooking at Louie’s Family Restaurant, but her favourite time was spent at L&L Takeout in Rockdale where she got to work beside her mother. Many laughs and stories were shared through that pick-up window, all of which, Mom cherished. Once her MS didn’t allow her to work anymore, she focused on family and friends. She loved to have company, go cruising around the neighbourhood on her scooter, or just getting out to enjoy the sunshine. Things weren’t always easy but she always tried to approach hardship with humour, a trait she has instilled in her girls. Even in her final days, the strength she showed astounded doctors but those who knew her and loved her, expected no less. Lisa is survived by her husband Duane; daughters Vanessa (Jason) Ryan, and Cassandra; her parents Louie and Loretta (Sampson) Boudreau and her brother Kevin (Christy) Boudreau;n nephew Jesse; niece Joee and furbaby, Shayla; sister-in-law Stephanie (Greg) Seltham and nephew Oliver. The family of Lisa would like to thank all of the caregivers she’s had over the years particularly her homecare workers, the emergency room nurses, and floor nurses at the Strait Richmond Hospital for taking such good care of her and of us as well. And, her most dedicated care giver, her Mom Loretta, who took care of her girl better than any doctor could. There will be no visitation by request. Memorial donations may be made to palliative care at the Strait Richmond Hospital. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Lynn Marie Drinovz Halifax, NS Passed away suddenly, yet peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the early morning of April 29, 2016, with her only daughter, Carly, nearby. Born in New Waterford, Lynn was the daughter of late Carl Drinovz and Shirley (LeBlanc) Nolan. Lynn moved to Halifax at the age of 19 and began pursuing many different careers, but it was Northwoodcare that won over her heart in early Nov. 1980. It was there that she became a personal care worker and spent the rest of her working career. She also developed strong ties to the patients and mourned their losses as if she were a family member over the years. When Carly was 10 years old and in Grade 4, Lynn decided to go back to school at NSCC, for a diploma in Business Information Technology. That year was the hardest year of their lives, but Lynn exhibited great strength, positivity and determination through that time. Following her schooling, she began pursuing different clerical jobs at Northwood, but when she started working for Charles Kwan, Lynn really found her calling and true happiness. She would brag about it all the time and that she had the best boss in the world and how lucky she was to work for him. Throughout Carly’s life, Lynn and she went through the ups and downs like any Mother/ Daughter relationship. During Carly’s four years of my living out of province, their relationship blossomed the most. Every conversation she would have with her Mom, some way or another Lynn would always let her know that she was her greatest accomplishment and that Carly was her entire world. It took Carly many years to realize what an incredible woman she was, and there is no doubt in her mind that no one else on this planet could have raised her better than Lynn. She was simply the best. Lynn is survived by her one and only daughter, Carly (Ben) Drinovz; her mother, Shirley Nolan; brothers, Robert (Bernadette), David (Tarryn), Darren, Andrew and Walter (Rosemary) and sister, Carol Anne and also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Carl Drinovz. Carly would like to thank the staff from Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas for going above and beyond for her mother and also for me during that time. She would like to also extend her thanks to each and every person who has reached out to her during this time, she needed this support in every way. A service will be held on Friday, May 13th, at 2:30 p.m. in the Shirley Burnstein Hall at Northwood at 2615 Northwood Terrace, Halifax June Rutledge St. Peter’s It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, June Beryl Rutledge, age 87, on Friday, May 6, 2016, at Richmond Villa Long Term Care Facility, St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, N.S. Born in London, England, June was the daughter of the late Arthur Harry and Florence Caroline (nee Yallop) Trickett, also of London England. She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Albert Rutledge of Fourchu, Cape Breton, and siblings, Edmund, Miriam (George), Roy (Isabel) and Noel (Joyce), all of London. June was a full-time mother and then school worker in England, who came to Cape Breton in 1977, with her husband, Leslie, on his retirement. Leslie had been a fisherman and lighthouse keeper in Fourchu who went to England with the Canadian Army in the Second World War, met and married June, then stayed to raise their family and become a foreman decorator. June was a wonderful mother in hard times, who always put the family first and did a great job raising the children despite many difficulties. June fell in love with Cape Breton, particularly Fourchu, but, especially Leslie’s local family and friends, such that, 12 years after his death, when her children moved her back to England in 2003, she returned just three months later to live out her life just enjoying the community and knitting. Cape Breton had become her true home and we understand that. Her family would like to sincerely thank those wonderful local members of Leslie’s family and friends, as well as the wonderful staff of both, the Richmond County Day Care team and Richmond Villa Long Term Care Facility for the warmth, friendship and great care bestowed on June throughout her time here, but particularly the last 10 years. She truly loved you all. June is survived by all her UK-based family who remained ever in her thoughts despite varying contact: daughter, Carol and son, Stephen (Julie and former wife, Christine); grandchildren, Claire Butcher, Emma (Richard) Mancini, Benjamin (Drazena) Rutledge, Thomas (Zara) Rutledge, Nicholas (Sally) Rutledge, Elizabeth Rutledge and Michael Rutledge; great-grandchildren, Isabella Mancini and Harry Charles Susa-Rutledge (born March 11, 2016); numerous nephews and nieces, including Graham (Janet) and family. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at Fourchu United Church on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Nancy WhitneyLatham officiating. (Johnnie) Graham, who passed away on April 30th, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 8th, 1929, in Judique, NS, Johnnie was the son of Hugh R. and Sadie (MacLellan) Graham. Johnnie never moved far from home; when he married Isabel Rankin of Black River in 1952 they moved in with Hughie R. and Sadie and eventually built a home across the field at Graham's River in Judique. Johnnie was very much in tune with nature and was never idle. A physically strong man, he loved the land and the sea and, indeed, depended on both for his livelihood. He was a lobster fisherman for over 60 years, drove the Judique school bus until he retired at age 65, and cut pulp in his spare time. He was a quiet man who gave of himself to help his neighbours and friends, from what he planted in the ground, cut in the woods and fished in the ocean. He had a deep and unquestioning faith and spent many hours in prayer. He liked watching the horse races and all sports, but was especially proud to be able to watch his grandson, Andrew, playing hockey in the NHL. He and Isabel were married for almost 63 years and brought up a family of six children. Through the loss of his wife and his own illness a year ago, Johnnie never complained and accepted the changes in his life. He is survived by his daughter Jeanette (Robert); sons Gerard (Carol Anne), Stanley (Sandra), Basil (Johanna), Darren (Heather); son-in law Bernie and special friend Norman. He was the proud grandfather of Breton (Cheryl), Andrew (Hali), Ryan, Jonathan, Lee Anne, Reilly and Hannah; and two beautiful great-grandchildren, Sadie and Mason. He is also survived by his brothers Joe (Kay) and Ronald D. He was predeceased by his wife Isabel; daughter Mary; two infant children; granddaughter Mary Theresa and brothers Arthur Alexander and D.R. Resting in the Community Room of the Judique Fire Department on Tuesday, May 3rd and Wednesday, May 4th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered Thursday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m. from St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Judique with Reverend Allan MacMillan presiding. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Parish, Judique; Central Inverness Palliative Care Society; or Judique Volunteer Fire Department. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Messages to the family may be conveyed at www.greensfuneralhome.ca. Brine McIsaac Born In: New Waterford Born: October 11th, 1943 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: April 28th, 2016 On Thursday, April 28, 2016, we, the family, witnessed the unexpected passing of our beloved Brine. Born October 11, 1943, he was the oldest child of the late D.A. ‘Spike’ McIsaac and Eileen (Marsh) McIsaaac. Receiving his early education in the New Waterford school system, he then attended Xavier Junior College. He soon realized his true calling was in the hair industry. ‘Chez Leon Hair Salon’ was where he excelled while learning his trade. At the age of 18 on the day of the final exam, he took the bus home and opened ‘Brine’s Beauty Bar’ that very same day. There was no question that this is what he was meant to do. He spent the next 50 plus years perfecting his craft and gaining the respect and admiration not only of his loyal clients but also that of his many friends and colleagues. Held in high regard by the professionals in the industry, he was very honoured to receive the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia for his many accomplishments and longtime involvement and dedication. In earlier years, Brine trained some stylists through an apprenticeship program at his workplace. He also taught for a short time at the Vocational School in Sydney where he mentored many eager students who continued to look up to him to this day. Another passion of Brine’s was to travel. From his humble coal-mining hometown he managed to see the world. Parts of Canada, the U.S.A., South America, Europe, and even Northern Africa provided a multitude of stories and fond memories with friends which he cherished. When the idea of a National Basketball Tournament (New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic) became a reality, Brine was invited to join the Hospitality Committee and began working with them immediately and still did to this day. Brine loved his music. For many years he has been the organist at St. Leonard Parish, formerly Mount Carmel Church, where he provided not only accompaniment for the senior choir but also music for as many funerals and weddings over the years as his busy schedule would allow. Occasionally you could enjoy his talent in musical productions and fundraisers held locally along with community events such as sing-alongs and cabarets with his many musical friends. His comforting airs and ballads, which deeply touched many, will be remembered fondly and held in our hearts and souls forever. Surviving are a sister, Myrna (Kevin) MacDonald; brother, Brent (Penny-Lou) McIsaac; sister-in-law Shannon McIsaac, all of New Waterford; nephews Jimmie, Tyler and Reilly; nieces Dana and Chera. Besides his parents, Brine was predeceased by his sister, Marsha and his brother, Brad. As per Brine’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Brine has been laid to rest next to his sister, Marsha in Mount Carmel Cemetery, New Waterford. A celebration of Brine’s life will be held at a later date. Donations in Brine’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca <http://www.vjmcgillivray.ca/>.
