Anne Margaret Leslie Bedford/Port Hawkesbury I have the option of writing this today. Although I didn’t cherish the idea, I did want to do it my way. I lost my battle with cancer on May 23, 2016, at my home in Bedford. I do not want a send-off that is too mournful and tearful. I’ve had a good life. I have loved and been loved deeply. My faith has done wonders for me all through my life. Keep it close. My work in the health-care field as an LPN and an OR technician gave me great satisfaction. I also enjoyed my volunteer work with the CWL, Religious Education, Transition House, Food Bank, Hootin Nannies and Hospice Society. I was born in North Sydney, N.S., to the late William ‘Bill’ and Margaret (Walsh) McIsaac. I am survived by my spouse, Kevin Leslie, and my beautiful, amazing daughters, Katie (Rob) Kennedy and Laura Leslie, as well as my much-loved grandchildren, Antonio, Kali and Leo; brothers, Kenneth (Roberta) McIsaac, North Sydney, Alan (Caroline) McIsaac, Langley B.C., and sister, Mary Manner, Burlington, Ont.; nieces, Laura (Carl) Jessome, Anne Manner, Lynn (Ronnie) Pitts and nephew, Neil (Kelly) McIsaac. Last but not least, my beautiful sister by heart, Bev Muir, always there…always soulmates. I love you. We should all be as lucky as her and I to have found a friendship that lasted the sands of time… and then some. I would like to close with a few thoughts…Lose your guilt and especially your fear. Be you, love you! Don’t burden yourself with socially determined standards. To my beautiful family, I love you dearly and will forever have you etched in my heart. I’ll be around, so be careful! Visitation will be held Friday, May 27, from 6-9 p.m. in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Grandville St., Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be Saturday, May 28, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 138 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. YOUNG, Nicholas “Nick, aka Budge” Benjamin North Sydney We are heartbroken to share the news of the sudden passing of our sweet son, brother and friend, Nick, age 28, who was taken away from us far, far too soon on Thursday, May 19, 2016. Nick loved his family deeply and kept them constantly entertained; he was adored in turn by his devoted parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He had an impossibly close group of friends who were the wind in his sails, led by his best friend in all the world, his beloved brother Andrew. Being the youngest of five kids, Nick got off to a bit of a slow start, preferring to always observe for a year or two before trying his hand at things, whether it was talking, playing video games or playing any instrument. Once he began though, he was an instant expert, speaking in full paragraphs when he started, beating teenagers 10 years his senior at the arcade while standing on a milk crate, and somehow drawing unbelievably sweet tunes out of any instrument he took into his great, nimble hands. Nick had a heart of gold that must have occupied his whole body it was so big – he loved deeply and unabashedly, and gave the best hugs in the world. Nick was an “old soul,” wise beyond his years. He was our great protector, always taking care of those he loved. He was the funniest person we knew, and he regularly dazzled us with his brilliant, quick wit. A modest man, he wrote some of the most amazing music that only a few of us were lucky enough to have heard. He was an avid reader and adored movies, TV and music; he loved art and had a collection of unusual objects. He possessed an uncanny ability to recall quotes from any book, movie or TV show and he won any and all quote challenges with his siblings. The music of the universe will likely carry on but will never be quite the same without Nick’s pure spirit and immense talents. There is a giant, Nick-sized hole in our hearts that we will do our best to fill with our many cherished memories of him, but he is and always will be utterly irreplaceable. Nick is survived by parents, Brian and Nancy (Wilkie) Young; Nana Peggy (Smith) Wilkie; sisters, Jodi ‘Butter’ Reid and Brianne ‘Biggie Shorty’ Young, and brother Andrew ‘Bibi’ Young; siblings “in-love” Doug ‘Dangerous’ Reid, Marc ‘Tingey’ Palmer and Maria ‘Chuha’ (Paruch) Young; niece Philly ‘Poots’ Reid; Boris Yoda Young; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by sister, Carmen Young; nephew, Davy Reid; grandparents, Jim and Julia (Rahey) Young, Ivan Aitkens and Lloyd Wilkie Sr. and Berkley Paul-for-short Young. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Memorial donations can be made to the Carmen Young CBU Nursing Scholarship (available at the funeral home) or the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com. Brandon was born in Belleville, Ont. on Feb 22, 1992 and raised in Marion Bridge, Cape Breton. He was the son of Corrie MacMullin and Jim MacNeil of Grand Mira North and cherished brother Kristian MacNeil. Brandon is survived by his grandparents, Sadie (Cibbs) MacMullin (late Jerry MacMullin), Francis ‘Tis’ MacNeil (late Harry MacNeil) and great-grandmother, Anna MacMullin. He was also survived by his aunts and uncles, Junior (Cherie) MacMullin, Connie MacMullin (Shawn), Margie MacMullin, Joe MacMullin (Sarah), Margie (Ken) MacDonald, Harold (Lisa) MacNeil. Brandon was adored and will be missed by his cousins, Patrick, Keysha, Liam, William, Cailey, Alicia, Emily and Faith. The McJannet family were also very special to Brandon, as was his best friend and “blood brother” Stephen Cipak. Brandon was a hands on kind of person from a very young age, tinkering with his Poppy in the yard or working in the McJannet’s garage, eventually developing into an accomplished welder. Affectionaly known as “B” to his close circle of friends, Brandon’s warm smile, gentle nature and kind heart will be missed by all. His family and friends were the most important part of his life and he loved the warmth, laughter and memories that family or social gathering would bring. “The gentle giant” amongst his friends, Brandon was often the life of the party and his smile and laugh would light up a room. He loved being around his friends, in the garage, hunting, fishing, swimming or just hanging around Marion Bridge. He was a young man who positively affected all he met, a beautiful soul who left us too early. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday, May19, 2016 at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2016 at Sacred Heart Church, Marion Bridge with Fr. Born in Glace Bay, she was the youngest child of the late John R. and Margaret (Butler) Gillis. She was predeceased by her husband, John F. MacNeil; sister, Elizabeth (Gillis) Morrison; brother-in-law, Vincent Morrison; and brother, John Gillis (Idella). She is survived by her daughters, Lois (Scott) Parker, Cathy, Jo-Ann Robertson, Phyllis, Theresa (Dan) McCarthy, Dorothy and Sheri; and six grandchildren, Mark, Matt, Landon, Terry, Donnie, and Robin; as well as her five great-grandchildren. Growing up in both Glace Bay and then Sydney, she loved playing basketball, skating and dancing (and we are told her dance card was always full). She graduated in 1949 from St. Martha’s School of Nursing, Antigonish, where she made many friends and had so many fond memories of her stay there. She started her career at the Steel Company’s private hospital and as well provided private nursing care to numerous families throughout the area. She then continued her career at St. Rita Hospital in pediatrics, from where she retired. Her warmth and kindness not only extended to all the children under her care but to all her fellow colleagues. Mom’s charm and wit were infectious and no one was impervious to her charisma or that twinkle in her eye. She was nurturing to a fault and she touched everyone who was lucky enough to have been in her presence (or kitchen) but by far her greatest gift to us was just being our mom. Mom and her son-in-law, Dan, shared a special bond, spending many evenings “watching” the hockey games, although there was a competition as to who napped the most during those times. He was a great tease but rarely could he get one over on her. Her presence and wonderful spirit will be missed by all and especially by her longtime friend, Sheila, who shared many evenings laughing and trading memories with her. Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday, May 19, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2016, at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, Sydney. Dorothy’s family will be forever grateful for the excellent care and compassion shown to her at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, and for the wonderful staff of the palliative care unit. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital palliative-care unit. Lillian Mae (Parsons) Wadden Born In: Birch Grove Born: October 27th, 1921 Passed on: May 15th, 2016 With broken heart the family of Lillian announces her passing on May 15, 2016, with loving family at her side. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Joe; son, David; sons-in-law, George Warner and Philip Sparrow. She was the last surviving member of her family. Cremation has taken place under the guidance of Patten Funeral Home and a graveside service will take place at a later date. “Our Mom taught us everything we know, but she never taught us how to live without her.” “Now you and Da are together again.” Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.pattenfuneral.com <http://www.pattenfuneral.com/>.

Rita Butts, RN Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: May 11th, 2016 It is with both sadness and joy that the family of Rita Butts, Glace Bay, N.S. announce her passing on May 11, 2016. Her eagerness to help others, to a fault, was second to none. She fought hard in everything she did; playing cards like a pro and making breaded pork chops that were unparalleled. She encouraged her children to go above and beyond what was expected of them and NEVER do less than their best. She made us believe that the world held for us boundless possibilities and we were to take on every challenge with conviction. She made us laugh hard, cry often but loved us all to her dying breath. At the same time our sorrow is laced with great joy as she was so willing and eager to be going home to the love of her life, her rock, her side kick, Charlie Willie. She missed him to the core of her being and it was time for them to reunite in Heaven. Once a nurse always a nurse was the motto she lived by and she spent her life in service of healing others. A graduate of St. Josephs nursing school, she went on to help people from their birth to their dying birth. Rita was one of 11 children of the late Ida and John Yorke. She leaves behind her children and their families in body but never in heart. She is survived by five children: Joseph (Gwen) Aliquippa, PA, Charlie (Sandra) Edmonton, Alta., David (Irena) Sofia, Bulgaria, Mary (Rob) Elmsdale, N.S., Gerald (Jodi) Toronto, Ont.; grandchildren, Marissa, Marianna, Ellen, Laura, Alex, Andrew, Catherine, Tatiana, Hannah, Emma, Aidan, and Ava and great-grandchildren, Nora and James. And too many close relatives to count. We wish to thank so many people who have made her last years as comfortable as possible. Please know she loved every one of you and you are our gift from God. Visitation to be held at Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday, May 15th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, May 16th at Immaculate Conception Church, Glace Bay. Stanley Joseph Hughes Born In: Maple Ontario Passed on: May 11th, 2016 Passed away peacefully in his home, on Wednesday May 11, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Maple, Ont. to the late Stan and Mary Hughes, Stan spent the last number of years residing in Truro before moving to Cape Breton. Stan spent his childhood years in Toronto and from meager beginnings, he carved out a life for himself and for those he loved. As a young man delivering newspapers and sweeping floors in convenience stores, Stan worked his way through the ranks, never letting any obstacle get in his way, to become general manager of the once famous Mac’s Convenience Stores of Ontario. Stan was referred to as the “Golden Boy of Mac’s”. He was then sought out to take on the position of vice president of Sobeys/Needs Convenience Stores of Atlantic Canada, where he pioneered many ideas that are still in use to this day and was given countless awards for his contributions. Stan was a passionate man with a tremendous work ethic and a keen ability to inspire others to achieve goals. During his time working in the retail industry, Stan was credited to be the force behind countless successes, not the least of which being the creation of the Truro Power Centre, which Stan considered to be his business legacy. “Papa Stan”, as he was known to his children and grandchildren, loved his family and would always remark on how lucky and how proud he was to have the love of so many. As an amateur chef and expert host, Stan’s family enjoyed many hours in his kitchen, or at his patio table, while Stan tested out new recipes and pulled goodies from out of the oven or fresh off the barbecue. Stan also had an insatiable desire for books and knowledge and could devour a good true crime novel in a matter of hours. In his retirement years, Stan enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, taking pride in his property and walking his flower gardens with his wife Arlene. Stan was known for his random acts of kindness and generosity and was always thinking about how he could help others. Stan’s presence will be greatly missed and his life will be celebrated by his loving wife, soulmate and best friend, Arlene; his children Bradley (Brynn) Hughes, Sandra (David) McLaughlin, Jennifer (Stephen) Sheppard, Erin (Eddie) Turner, Dennis (Lyndsay) Sheppard and Nathan (Ashley) McDonald and his grandchildren, Meaghan, Breanna, Jeremy, Jordan, Elise, Tristan, Chloe, Ethan, Cameron and Skylar. Stan was predeceased by his sister, Agnes and brother, Johnny. There will be no visitation.
