Connie is survived by her husband, Mike Day, as well as 12 brothers and sisters, Carol (Ron) Davison, Howie Centre; Clifford (Deacon)(Elaine) Mira Road; Noreen (Frank) White, Dartmouth; Reggie (Heather) Sydney; Ron (Cindy) Sydney; Dennis (Jim) (Anne Marie) Sydney; Cathy Delaney, Sydney; Arlene Delaney, Sydney; Germie (Nancy) Belle Cote; Vernon (Debbie) Mira; Theresa (John) MacNeil, Sydney River and Coleen (Paul) Sydney. She is also survived by stepson, Kenneth; stepdaughter, Michelle Day (Kyle); grandchildren, Justin and Kara Day; sister-in-law Lorraine (Earle) Standing; sister-in-law Pheobe (Wayne) Pero; sister-in-law Linda (Paul) Wilson; brother-in-law, Bob (Janet) Day and brother-in-law Bill Day. She was predeceased by her parents, Catherine ‘Kay’ and William ‘Bill’ Delaney, as well as a special nephew, Cory MacAskill. Connie was employed for 35 years with Revenue Canada, where she built many long lasting friendships. Also sharing this loss are the numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews all of which Connie shared many special relationships. Not having any children of her own, they were her children. She facilitated birthday parties, organized Easter egg hunts and Christmas tree decorating at her house. She babysat, attended school concerts, proms and graduations with pride. She was there for everything, always there. There are no words to describe how much they will miss her. Also saying goodbye to Connie is her super friend/sister by another mother, Dee Melong. Over the 30-plus years of friendship there were a ton of laughs, a few tears and no regrets. Added to this was about a million miles travelled. Connie will also be sadly missed by her friend, Kelly Dawn. They shared a special relationship that will never leave Kelly’s heart. Connie was Kelly’s Nova Scotia mom. Also feeling this loss will be the many neighbourhood children who were always welcomed at her door with a smile and a Freezie. She was a selfless, caring individual who was there for anyone, whether it be family or friends. She was one who we called during the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. We will miss that contagious smile and infections laugh. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the An Cala Unit, as well as the Cancer Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Jensen, Dr. Sharieff, Dr. Mac Leod, Dr. Zemerli and Dr. D’Intino who graciously guided Connie throughout her journey. Connie referred to these people as, “her team”. “Our family circle forever grows with every birth and every union. With every crisis faced together, this makes the circle stronger. No straight lines make up our lives and all our roads have bends, but one thing we can be sure of is that we will all be together again.” Forever missed and never forgotten. Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Unit or charity of choice. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the S.W. Gordon MacAulay Born In: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: June 3rd, 1938 Passed in: Las Vegas, Nevada, United States Passed on: April 28th, 2016 Gordon D. MacAulay Sr. It is with deep sadness that the family of Gordon D. MacAulay, Sr., announce his death at the Nathan Adelson Hospice, Las Vegas, Nevada on April 28, 2016. Born in New Waterford on June 3, 1938 he was the son of the late Ivan and Jane (Dewan) MacAulay. In his early years he proudly served in the RCN on the HMCS Bonaventure. From this venture we were entertained with many great stories. In 1963 Gord, along with his wife Joyce and children relocated to Boston, MA. He started work with John Sexton & Co. as a warehouse worker on the day of the J.F.K assassination. Through hard work and dedication he moved from the warehouse to trucking, to warehouse manager in several states across the USA. Gordon eventually became Director of Warehousing for Rykoff Sexton, currently known as US Foods, before retiring in Las Vegas, NV. Although he lived in the USA most of his life he kept up on Canadian news and politics. He enjoyed a good debate, which in his mind, he always won. With his wry and somewhat sarcastic sense of humor he kept us entertained with many stories of his life and travels. Gord’s children and grandchildren will always have the memory of Dad/Papa watching the T.V. on mute. Gord is survived by his wife of 55 years the former Joyce Micholsky, daughters Shauna (Jack Lashbrook), Detroit, MI, Karen and Nancy, Las Vegas, NV and daughter in law Shari of Las Vegas, NV. He will be missed by grandchildren C.J., Ashley (Greg), Jack (Taylor), Brandon, Annie, David, Daniel, Shaun and Colleen as well as great granddaughter Madelyn Grace. He is also survived by sister Judy Caborn, sister-in-law Leona MacAulay and brother-in-law Gary Micholsky (Betty). Gord was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Jane MacAulay, his son Gordon (2004), who took a piece of his heart, brother Charles (February 2016) and in-laws Pearl and Jiggy Micholsky. A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Wisdom in Las Vegas, NV on May 7, 2016.

    1. [NS-CB] JANE Re: "How a Train Ticket from 1856 Solved My Family's Greatest Mystery"
    2. Jane Nicholson via
    3. What a lovely thing to share with us all, Carol. Thank you for this story…. Jane Nicholson On 2016-06-01, at 12:54 PM, Carol MacLean via <ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Country Living Magazine > > "How a Train Ticket from 1856 Solved My Family's Greatest Mystery” > > Researching my family tree, I unlocked the secret to my family's past. > > - By Julia Park Tracey - Feb 1, 2016 > It was in 1990 that I began tracing my family tree, with my dad. We went through old photos from the attic, yellowed slips of newspaper with obituaries and birth notices, business cards and scrap albums, all in an effort to draw out our genealogy as far as we could. Almost everything was traceable, but we did encounter one missing piece, one family mystery that we simply couldn't solve. > > On my father's side, we got back to to our Scottish roots in one step; my grandfather left Glasgow on the steamship Athena in 1906. On his mother's side we got back to Scotland and England in two or three steps, but one person was an enigma: my great-great grandfather, William Lozier Gaston. He was adopted. Were we French? Were we German? We had no luck in finding anything more about the Loziers, since we had nothing to go off of but his name. > > The only clue we had to Will's history was one slip of paper: the receipt for a train fare from New York's Home for the Friendless <https://ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com/2010/09/13/the-19th-century-home-for-the-friendless/>to Oberlin, Ohio, for $7.50, dated 1856. The scrap is a sales receipt for the exchange of the child from an orphanage to a stranger. Will was three-years-old at the time, so obviously someone took him to Ohio from New York. > > And the family trail dies there. Although I occasionally wondered, I didn't think much more about Will—until I read Christina Baker Kline's book, Orphan Train <http://www.amazon.com/Orphan-Train-Christina-Baker-Kline/dp/0061950726/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1452896711&sr=1-1&keywords=the+orphan+train>. The book rekindled in me a curiosity to know who this man was. I started internet-sleuthing to see what I could find about the orphanage, the era, and the origins of the so-called Orphan Train. It took about a month of late-night research before I found someone at the National Orphan Train Complex <http://orphantraindepot.org/> who said she could help. I scanned the train receipt and sent it in to her. After some back and forth over email, I received a fat envelope of papers in the mail. "This is one of the most satisfying mysteries we've ever resolved," the volunteer told me. "You'll see.” When I opened the package, I opened up a whole new chapter in our family's histor! y. Not only had Will been given up to the orphanage, but so had his two brothers and a sister. Their father had died in 1848, leaving Martha, his wife, to lose the family's farm in upstate New York. She eventually found her way to the poverty-stricken slums of New York City. > > Following census and tax records, plus the archives of the Home for the Friendless, I saw that Martha had give up two of her boys to the orphanage, but kept the baby, Will, and her oldest girl. Martha worked as a seamstress, sharing a room in one of the infamously perilous tenements, in what is now the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan. As she fell deeper into poverty, Martha made the difficult decision to give up her last two children. They were all adopted. > > "This is one of the most satisfying mysteries we've ever resolved," the volunteer told me. "You'll see."Martha was undaunted; she worked and saved, and eventually wrote to ask for her children back. The orphanage did not respond. In those days, a child's moral and spiritual welfare were tantamount, and a single mother was seen as not fit to parent. Nevertheless, she found her way to her daughter, and at least one of her middle sons, if not both. Martha lived the rest of her life with her married daughter and her grandchildren. She died between 1900 and 1910, and she never saw nor heard of what had happened to Will, who grew up to be one of the top salesmen of pressed glass dishes in the Midwest. Will eventually moved to Riverside, California, where he helped raise my father—before he, too, was left fatherless by the hard times of the Great Depression. > > I feel so sad for Martha, whose world spun out of control by the loss of her husband, her farm, and her children. She is key to a number of other amazing life stories in our line. Following her line back on various internet sites, I found that my 10th great-grandmother was a Native American woman known only as Lottie; her husband, my 10th great-grandfather, was known only as Johnson. When I took a DNA test and received the results, I saw a marker for Native American DNA. I had originally scoffed at that, thinking that the test must be wrong. But science doesn't lie. Through Martha, I found Lottie, and answered the riddle of my DNA. > > And through Martha, I found our multiple connections to the Coffin family, founders of Nantucket Island and many whaling ship captains. I found our link back to the Mayflower, and my 13th great-grandmother, Mary Allerton, who was a child when she arrived with her parents as Pilgrims. I learned the lyrical, haunting names of my Puritan foremothers: Patience, Ruth, Waitstill, Freelove, Truthfull, Experience, and Silence. 1. [NS-CB] "How a Train Ticket from 1856 Solved My Family's Greatest Mystery"
    2. Carol MacLean via
    3. Country Living Magazine "How a Train Ticket from 1856 Solved My Family's Greatest Mystery” Researching my family tree, I unlocked the secret to my family's past. - By Julia Park Tracey - Feb 1, 2016 It was in 1990 that I began tracing my family tree, with my dad. "You'll see.” When I opened the package, I opened up a whole new chapter in our family's history. The men and women who came before me are with me still, in blood and bone — and possibly — as they say, genetic memory <http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/genetic-memory-how-we-know-things-we-never-learned/>. I haven't yet finished researching my family roots, but I have to hand it to Martha. She gave up everything to try and keep her children. I honor and treasure her, my unknown grandmother, for her grit and perseverance. I carry her DNA and her spirit with pride.

GRAHAM Florence Sarah (MacKay) Graham, age 99, died peacefully at Strait Richmond Hospital, Monday, May 30th. Born in Kingsville, Cape Breton on December 17th, 1916, the daughter of Angus MacKay and Mary MacDonald MacKay, Florence was a gentle person whose graceful ways touched all who knew her. Growing up in a family of 10, she possessed the lilting tongue and witty humour of the Gaelic speakers still common to Glendale Parish. In the 1930s, Florence left home at age 17 with $10 in her pocket to board the train for Montreal where she and her two sisters made their way working in domestic and restaurant service in their early days. These skills were ingrained in her lifelong ability to keep a pristine house and set a delicious table. Her oatcakes were legendary. At the end of the Second World War, Florence married former Air Force serviceman Allan John Graham of Judique, whose brother, Alex, was married to her sister Jessie. Allan and Florence made their home in Windsor, Ontario for more than 50 years but never lost touch with their Cape Breton roots. Their summer visits were frequent and welcomed by everyone “down home”. She is survived by her sister Mary Jane Hardie of Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home and sister-in-law Marjorie MacKenzie-MacKay and family of St. Peter’s. Aunt Florence was much loved and cherished by her nieces and nephews: Patricia Gibson (John), Jeannette MacDonald (Syl) of Baddeck, Charles Graham (Marion), Daniel Graham (Mary) of Judique, John Hardie of Australia, Mary MacKay of Judique, John Eric MacKay (Heather) of Fort McMurray, Danny MacKay of Dartmouth, Mary Jane MacKay (Michael MacLellan) of Dartmouth, Eileen MacKay-Grabka (Karl) of Halifax, also her many grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews, for whom she was a grandmother figure and always made the best cookies. Predeceased by her parents Angus and Mary; husband Allan; sister Jessie; brothers John A., Dan, Peter, Joe, Donald R., Jimmy and Alex Francis; sisters-in-law M.C., Margaret, Florence, Jessie and Madeline; brothers-in-law Pat, Steve, Roddie, Alex and Tom; also nieces Mary Alexandra, Eileen and Virginia; nephew Gordon and grandnephew Jeffrey. Mary Natalie 'Nat' Wilkie Born In: North Sydney Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: May 21st, 2016 We are saddened to announce the death of Nat Wilkie on May 21, 2016, at the age of 86. A lifelong resident of North Sydney, Nat was a unique “Ward 4” character who lived life on her own terms. Nat graduated from Hamilton Memorial Hospital in 1952 and worked there until St. Elizabeth’s (Northside General) was opened by the Sisters of Charity. She enjoyed a long career as head nurse of the surgical floor, where she touched the lives of many patients and staff. She certainly ran a tight ship! From her family home on Purves Street, Nat watched over Indian Beach, which was an integral part of her life. She spent many hours there socializing, swimming, walking the sand bar and just soaking up the sun. She loved to watch the CN/Marine Atlantic vessels come and go and enjoyed the fury and peace of the sea. She watched the ball games and the Bill Lynch shows, and listened to the summer entertainment from her porch. Nat was a passionate sports fan. She loved hockey and ball, and Sid the Kid was her particular hero. While watching events on TV, she cheered, shouted and complained as if she were there at the rink or field. She also loved harness racing and travelled to PEI several times with the Ratchfords to cheer them on. In recent years, she could be seen at Northside Downs enjoying the races. She also had fond memories of sailing on Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick’s yacht. Nat always loved driving her car but she never ventured too far from home. She did, however, conquer her fear of flying to attend the beatification of Mother Seton in Rome. Nat found great joy at Parkview Place where she resided for the past year. She made many new friends who were very good to her ─ taking her on outings and treating her to meals. They introduced her to playing cards and she enjoyed this immensely (even though she never could tell the difference between a club and a spade). Besides her parents, Billy and Hilda (Cameron) Wilkie, Nat was predeceased by her brothers Gordon, Cameron (Doc) and Lloyd; sisters Kay Larnis, Gertrude, Olive (Ollie) and Yvette (Vet); sister-in-law Anne Wilkie; niece Kathy Larnis; grandniece Carmen Young; grandnephew Nick Young; and great-nephew Davy Reid. She is survived by her brother Stewart Wilkie, whom she visited every day; sister-in-law Peggy Wilkie; nieces Nancy (Brian) Young and Janet Wilkie; nephews Bob (Susan Napier) Wilkie, Lloyd (Lynn Drake) Wilkie, Trevor (Pauline) Wilkie and Bill (Phyllis) Westberg; and many grand nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A celebration of Nat’s life will take place on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at 2 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, with Fr. Patrick O’Neill (a sports adversary) officiating. Donations may be made to the Carmen Young CBU Nursing Scholarship or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of W.J. She attended St. Joseph's School in North Sydney and completed her Grade 12 in Sydney Mines. She then studied business at St. Francis Xavier University (Mount St. Bernard) and upon graduation began work at Angel's Foundry in North Sydney as chief accountant and book keeper. Nora participated in and lead sing-a-longs for regiments of soldiers stationed in North Sydney during the Second World War. She fondly remembered the music, comaraderie and songs at gatherings in the Empire Hall. In the early 1950s she worked at CN Express in Sydney. In 1954, she left for employment in Seattle where she resided with her uncle John. By the fall of that year, she moved to Los Angeles where she was employed with the largest TV station in the city. After roughly a year in this position, she was offered a major promotion but decided instead to come back to Cape Breton. Upon her return to Cape Breton, she met her future husband, Capt. Michael Tobin. They were married in 1957. Nora had an avid interest in gardening and golfing. She enjoyed meeting with the local gardening club and travelled in Europe on a couple of occasions with this group. She was in charge of payroll for the newly formed Seaview Golf Club for the first years of the club's existence. She became a member as well and later a member of the board during the crucial 18-hole expansion of the course in the early 1990s. She played golf regularly for almost six decades and scored a hole-in-one on the old number 5 in 1986. She also sat on the Holy Cross Cemetery Board of Governors. At a time when treeless cemeteries were in vogue, she raised money in the parish for over 100 red maple trees. The results sway majestically over the grounds today. Mom loved nature. She enjoyed cycling on the Old Branch Road, cross-country skiing, tennis, skating on lakes and ponds (especially Lilly Lake) and swimming in the Bras D'Or Lakes. She dearly loved watching the sunset over George's River. Mom had a great love of music and played the piano and sang beautifully until just before her death. She hosted musical parties with all her siblings, family and friends, especially on New Year's Eve. She alternated on piano with her brother, Terry (an accomplished pianist) and the music and song would go late into the night. She was always interested in Canadian politics and in her later years, she watched political news and panels with a mixture of interest, bemusement and concern. Nora is survived by her sister, Kathleen Ryan and her brother, the Honourable Murray J. Ryan, both residing in North Sydney. She is also survived by her sons, Michael (Elaine), Terry and David; her granddaughter, Cecelia and by her nephews and nieces: Murray; Mary, David, Sally and James; Patricia, Mary Lou, Charles, Matthew, Catherine, Ethel and Nora; and Marjorie, Terence and James. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Cecilia Ryan, R.N. and Anne Ethel Milne, R.N., as well as by her brothers, Capt. David F. Ryan, Terence Ryan, Robert Emmett Ryan and James MacLeod Ryan. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law, John Milne; her sisters-in-law, Mena Ryan, Patrica (Patsy) Ryan, Mary Ryan and Mabel Ryan, as well as by her niece, May and her nephew, Matthew.
