    1. [NS-CB] Nova Scotia probate records online
    2. Ardith Maney via
    3. Dear list, I am interested in hearing from anyone who has tried to work on 19th century probate records online to get tips that make the process easier. Have been working on names from my family tree for Inverness and Cape Breton (Sydney) counties. I am not finding records using the familysearch.org records or the version that is on the NS archives website. There are a few key people whose deaths in Inverness come before 1850 who are not in the index. Also several people are missing from the indexes for wills from around 1876-1890. And for Cape Breton, I am interested in the period around 1890. I only need to look at records for abt 6-7 people and have started with the online approach because I live out of the region. Any suggestions will be appreciated. As is usual, I want to use probate records to verify names of children, location of farms and homes, and related information. Ardith Maney

James Joseph Ryan Born In: St. Brendans Newfoundland Born: November 7th, 1952 Passed in: Valley Colchester County Passed on: June 15th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of James Ryan on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro after a lengthy illness. Born in St. Brendan’s, Nfld. on Nov. 7, 1952, he was a son of the late Jack and Frances (Mackey) Ryan. He leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Judy (Walker); his two children, Janine Ryan, and Shaun (Jaimie) Ryan, both of Springhill; his two cherished grandchildren, Kael and Elliott, who will miss their “Poppy” very much. Jim is also survived by sisters, Joan (Len) McMurrer, Ottawa, Ont., Angela (George) Quirk, North Sydney; brothers, Leonard, Truro, Randy (Sandy), Springhill, John (Michael), Ottawa, Ont., Michael (Leanne), Halifax; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim’s family moved to North Sydney in 1965, where he enjoyed playing hockey, made many new friends and continued his education graduating from Thompson High School in 1971. He took an apprenticeship with CNR in Moncton, N.B. and then began his railway career in 1973 in Sydney while obtaining a business degree at CBU. He was a hard working very conscientious employee for over 30 years with CN, Via Rail and CBNS Railway until 2008 when illness finally prevented him from continuing on with a career he took great pride in; working his way up to management positions in various parts of Canada. His work ethic was simply that every job deserved to be well done. While living in Dartmouth and Ottawa, Ont., Jim found the time in his busy work schedule to become involved in assistant coaching of minor hockey where he believed how you played the game was more important than the outcome. Jim enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors whether he was working in the yard, out in a boat fishing or simply walking in the woods, never forgetting to respect the environment. He developed a special bond with family pets over the years, enjoying their company and always keeping their well-being in mind. Although he left Cape Breton in 1987, he and his family always found time in the summer to return for family gatherings and relaxation. Jim faced the daily challenges of his illness head on with courage and strength, while his faith allowed him to accept God’s plan for him. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Jim’s many health care providers over the years: Dr. Lori Wood, Nova Scotia Cancer Center, Halifax for her tireless efforts since 2000 in the treatment and management of his disease, Dr. David Blair, longtime family physician, Dr. Donald Rowe for his daily monitoring of Jim while in hospital, Dr. Courtney Smith and the nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit at CEHHC, for their compassionate care and support during his illness and final days. Dr. David Henderson and Sue Gibbons for their many home visits to treat Jim. He received excellent care from the nurses in the Medical Day Unit and the Chemotherapy Unit of CEHHC. We greatly appreciate the many volunteers of the Hospice Society who brightened Jim’s Day. Many thanks also to the VON staff of Colchester for their dedication to Jim’s day to day care while at home. Visitation will held this evening, Friday, June 17 from 6-8 p.m. with prayers at 7:45 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 669 Prince St., Truro. Rev. Father Dariusz Miskowisz, officiating. Lorna (Tobin) Cann Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Big Bras d'Or It is with a broken heart that I, Lorna (Tobin) Cann, at the age of 74, write this prior to losing a short battle with cancer at my son’s home in Big Bras d’Or. I would prefer not to have my family and friends mourn over me, just think of the good times we all had. I’m hoping to be in a better place with Ma, Da, daughter, Wanda; son, Joe and the love of my life, my soul mate, Jackie Leach. To my friends at the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club and the Dart League, just keep a seat open, you know I’m there. To my Bingo and card nights at Saint Pius X Hall with my best friends Mary Boyd and Eileen Romeo, I will miss you guys. My blueberry fields will be plentiful this year as I will not be out to pick them; my favourite location will be my best kept secret. I spent most of my life in Ontario, as a superintendent for various apartment buildings, so I know the hard work and value of a dollar. I feel sad that I must leave behind my loving son, Louis and his wife, Esther, who I consider like a daughter, and have been very patient with me and never lost their cool. To my daring grandchildren, Cecil (Jr), Jeffery and Tammy, I will miss you dearly, and my grandchildren, Carolyn, Joseph, Robert and Kayla including my 15 great-grandchildren, I will be there to guide you. To my loving and only brother, Joe (JR) Tobin (Isabel), you be strong for me, I know you can do it. To Francis (Mugsy) Groves, who was a true brother-in-law, take care. To my nieces Wendy and Fay, my nephews Jody and Jason, thank you for your ever loving support. I would also like to thank Elaine (Leach) and Dave MacDougall for your lovely visit, and our memorable travels to Ontario with your dad Jackie. I must not forget my four legged friend Rockie, who was always by my side throughout my illness. I was born and raised in Sydney Mines and predeceased by my parents, Joey and Mary Melvina ‘Mel’ Roy Tobin. I was never a world traveller, just a mother who cared, loved and provided for her family, so I may be gone in body, but I’ll be around, so be careful. I would like to take this time to thank Dr. Beth McCormick, the palliative care doctors, especially the palliative care nurse Cathy McMillan and VON for all their care during my illness. I am requesting no visitation; cremation will take place and just a simple graveyard committal for the family. My funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. Words of comfort for my family may be forwarded to www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.

Annie was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Halifax, N.S., to John J. and Rosalind (Pangborn) McHale. Annie was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Carman; and her husband, Joseph. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Betty Anne and her husband, John Christoff, Glace Bay; granddaughter, Kelly, Ont; grandson, Jason, Toronto; and granddaughter, Ashley, Sydney. Annie started her working life at an early age, working in Glebe houses and convents from Halifax to Glace Bay. She retired from St. John’s Convent in New Aberdeen when her husband Joseph took ill, to look after his daily needs. Upon Joseph’s passing she devoted her time and love to help raise her grandchildren. She was a member of the former St. John’s Church, a member of St. John’s CWL and St. Ann’s Society. A woman of great faith, she worked tirelessly for her church. My mother was blessed with wonderful neighbors. That is one reason why she could maintain her independence in her own home for so long. Annie enjoyed Thursday afternoons with the Ladies Bowling Team at Knox Bowling Lanes. She enjoyed her weekly trips to Superstore with her friends, Mary MacNeil and Delores Young. A special thank you to her family physician, Dr. Puppala, staff of the ER, Glace Bay and the staff of third floor, 3A, who took such excellent care of her. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 16, 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Main Street. The Rev. Leo Boone will be officiating. The interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Wallace Road, Glace Bay. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www. currysfuneralhome.com. Robert Carl Nagel Robert Carl Nagel, 86 “died dead” on June 10, 2016, at home, as was his wish, in Roslindale, Massachusetts. Bob was born on the eve of the Great Depression on October 10, 1929, to Carl T. Nagel and Josephine B. MacKenzie. Bob served five years in the United States Air Force and was subsequently employed by American Airlines as a Passenger Service Manager. Bob retired at age 53, a testament to his belief that time was worth more than money. He travelled widely and enjoyed the company of countless friends. Every summer Bob would drive to Big Bras d’Or, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, his mother’s ancestral homeland, where another large contingent of friends would eagerly await his arrival on “the Hill.” Bob lived life to the fullest, rarely seen without a smile. He was an ardent trickster who managed to poke outrageous fun while never causing any harm. For those who knew and loved him, he leaves behind a gaping void which will be only partially filled with many sweet and mirthful memories. Time spent with everyone’s “Uncle Bob” was “always a pleasure.” Bob was predeceased by his parents and his brother Frederick (Freddie). His sisters Margaret (Peggy) Potts and Helene (Hopkins) MacGregor, many nephews and nieces, and a vast assortment of friends remain to sadly mark the passing of an era. Those who may wish to make a donation in his memory might consider The Home for Little Wanderers, or Shriners Hospitals for Children. An event to celebrate his life will be planned for a future date. She was in her 89th year. She was the only daughter of the late Sarah (MacDougall) Varley and John Henry Varley of Christmas Island, Cape Breton. It was in her childhood village of Christmas Island that she developed her tremendous compassion for people, strong religious conviction and her love of Celtic music and culture. She completed her high school education and continued on to earn her diploma in nursing from the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in North Sydney in 1949. In her early career she worked in Halifax and Winnipeg veteran hospitals returning to live in Westmount where she married and lived until recently. She worked in numerous hospitals in the area retiring from the Northside General Hospital. After her retirement she was very involved with her church, Holy Rosary parish in Westmount, as a member of the CWL and choir, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 126 in Westmount and volunteered with the VON Foot Clinic. But her real passion was to enjoy life and have fun. No one loved children or dogs more than she did. She was a fabulous cook and loved to bake the complicated recipes always sharing them with others. Family gatherings were her favourite pastime. She continued her love of dancing, music and concert going until she was no longer able. She also enjoyed walking her dog, any opportunity to swim (especially at Christmas Island or Shenacadie beach with family) and to bowl. “The Varleys”, who lived on the same street in Westmount and their offspring, benefited throughout their lives for her unselfish love of family. They remain forever grateful. She is survived by her son, Alexander ‘Sandy’ Chisholm (Karen Bonnell) as well as a nephew, Colin Varley (Patricia) and nieces, Suzanne Varley-Doyle (Brian), Clara MacDonald, Ann Varley-Forrest )Barry) and Marie Varley-MacKenzie (Keith) and grandnephews, Kyle, Liam and Stewart Varley and grandnieces, Jolene and Stephanie MacDonald and special friend, Doris Heading. She was predeceased by her husbands, Donald Chisholm and William MacDougall, her brother John Joseph ‘Joe’ Varley and his wife, Agnes Varley and their son, Allan Varley. A heartfelt thank you from her family is extended to the staff of The Cove for their care and compassion while she was a resident but especially in the last few days. Thank you as well to the staff of the Emergency Department and Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for ensuring she was well cared for during her short stay. Visitation for Mary will be held on Tuesday, June 14 2016 from 6-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, June 15 at 10 A.M. in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating. Having lived a wonderful full life, our beautiful, stately, classy, gentle, kind, generous and loving mother has left this world, now in the arms of her beloved husband and soulmate Howard. Even with loving family constantly by her side, life was still lonely since his passing. "How fortunate are those to be so loved." Our house was consumed with love. Mum and dad worked tirelessly, sometimes two jobs so their family could have financial stability. They loved unconditionally and supported their children/spouses/grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Extended family and friends also experienced their love. What a team! It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Margaret Roberta (McIntosh) Sexton, on Friday, May 13, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney with family by her side. Margaret worked at various places throughout the years, including the Newfoundland Railway (now Marine Atlantic) in North Sydney, their canteen in Groves Point, their convenience store in North Sydney, Sexton’s Dairy on Commercial Street and, most importantly, as a homemaker. In her younger years, she was a member and held offices in many organizations, such as Rebekah Lodge, Harbour View Hospital Auxiliary and canteen, Dr. D.W. Archibald Memorial Chapter IODE, Carman United Church Auxiliary, Home and School Organizations and participated in various other community activities. Margaret and Howard were avid card players, including bridge, crib, 45s, scat, poker and other games. They belonged to a bowling league, played golf and loved to dance. Their many family trips included Police Chief Conventions. Margaret was always elegantly dressed. She was kind and generous to everyone, receiving visitors who rarely left empty handed. Her favourite times were with children of all ages. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Howard; sisters Eva (Cecil) Snow, Theresa (Donald) MacDermid; brothers Doug McIntosh and John McIntosh, who died in infancy; son-in-law Joe Donovan; brothers-in-law Gerald Murphy, Orville Sexton and George Marks; sister-in-law Barbara (Mark) Carey; nephews Jamie and Shawn McIntosh. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com <http://www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com/> Catherine Elizabeth 'Kaye' Murray Born In: Sydney Mines Born: June 28th, 1930 Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: June 3rd, 2016 Catherine Elizabeth ‘Kaye’ Murray was born on June 28, 1930 in Sydney Mines. The math says she was 85 years, 11 months old, but most would not believe that. She was always young at heart … smiling despite any reasons to dwell on tears and accepting despite anyone else’s reasons to doubt or question. We lost her to this world on June 3, 2016, after a three-month stay in the Northside General Hospital. ‘Kaye’ was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to be. She was the definition of humility, gentleness, patience and tolerance at all times. If amazing parenting was a magazine, she could have been the centerfold. Our loss with her passing is a sunset we hoped we’d never ride into. Intelligent, nurturing, never seeking kudos but always appreciating any thought or act of kindness, she was an exemplary person. Admired as a teacher who saw potential as much as need, Catherine taught children not ‘just’ subjects. She was a dedicated, lifelong member of Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines, Cann Rebekah Lodge #57 for decades and served on the board of Miner’s Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines for many years. One of the first things that come to mind when we think of her is the subtle but huge impact she had on all of our lives. Her family and friends … with her through the rough last patches know … she appreciated and gained comfort from that. Many a Stanley Cup would have been won by the Bruins if mom had not chosen to leave the room just as the cannonading drive left the stick. When the Bruins lost she felt it was all her fault! Many an ace of hearts would have been played in Auction 120 had mom not gone to put the kettle on instead of staying to finish her hand and many a Murdock Mystery would have remained unsolved had she not figured the whole thing out five minutes in. PBS, CNN and TSN were on her list of favourite channels and Hello Canada magazine’s posts on babies George and Charlotte always brought on lengthy conversation and huge smiles. We jokingly told her that she was an honorary member of the Royal Family. Catherine is survived by her son Glenn (Carol Freeman) of Fredericton, daughter Deb (Sandra Kelly) of Caribou Marsh, daughter Cheryl Layton (Donald) of Sydney Mines and brother Jack Brown (Helen) of Fredericton. Left as a legacy to her heart as well are three granddaughters, Mallory Layton (Gary Miller) of Lawrencetown, Morganne Spooney ( Josh) of Sydney Mines, Jessica Layton of Vancouver and her grandson Seann ( Kaitlin Morrow) of Toronto. Kaye was predeceased by many precious family members, including her father Edward ‘Teddy’ Peddle, her mom Drusilla ‘Dru’ Brown, her husband Gordon ‘Red’ Murray and, all too soon, her grandson Ryan of Toronto. Catherine became independent out of necessity in 1990 when Gordon died. She met the difficult challenges that brought and her family continued to be her main focus, full tilt, right to the end. We’d truly like to thank Dr. Stephanie Langley for giving mom just the kind of bedside manner, attention and professional care she needed. We’d also like to thank the dedicated and attentive staff of 4 West at the Northside General Hospital, the Northside Homemakers Service Society for their superlative work with her at home and the many EHS paramedics who transported her over the months. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will take place at Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines on Tuesday, June 7 at 11 a.m. with Rev Stacey LeMoine officiating. A reception to follow in the Grandy Hall. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery in Sydney Mines. On ine condolences can be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com <http://www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com/>. In lieu of flowers, please take time to plant some instead, and may Trinity Anglican Church or the charity of your choice reap the benefit of any heartfelt donation you wish to make. Remember to take time to celebrate life; don’t just “plan” to. Actions trump words every time. “She is not dead ... she does not sleep ... she has awakened from the dream of life.” Adonais Lillian Lorrraine (Matheson) MacLeod Passed on: January 3rd, 2016 A memorial service for the late Lillian Lorraine MacLeod, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, June 7 at 2 p.m., with Mr. Gary Grant officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca <http://www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca/> or email sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca <mailto:sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca>.
