John Wayne Mackenzie a retired coal miner of 33 years peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at age 75. Born in Dominion, raised by his grandmother and Aunt Unise and Uncle Fiddler. Wayne’s entire world revolved around his soulmate Jean, they spent many days going for drives to Tim’s to get an Icecap and parking at Dominion Beach. He was a pretty simple guy so it didn’t take much to make him happy. There’s nothing he loved more than when he’d finally get to eat a Big Mac Attack and the famous Friday night pizzas! In his spare time he loved working around the house and yard where he thought he was jack of all trades. Most of all, his pride and joy were his children and grandchildren, he loved them more than life itself. Throughout his illness he always put his family first and never complained about anything. His amazing sense of humour was never lost. He will be sadly missed by wife Jean (Hann), son Danny (Belinda MacNeil), daughter Cheryl (Fred Bourgeois), grandchildren Marc and Caitlin Bourgeois and his lifelong friends Billy and Florence Gracie. Inverness Oran Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/ <http://www.cbgen.org/>>www.cbgen.org <http://www.cbgen.org/> NEW MEMBERS WELCOM Inverness Oran Obits June 29, 2016 Wednesday There were 3 obituaries published today LIVINGSTONE, COLIN FRANCIS - 101 YRS CAMPBELL, JEANETTE “NETTIE” - MACLELLAN, JOHN RODERICK “JOHNNIE THE DUKE" - 79 YRS LIVINGSTONE Colin Francis Livingstone (1915-2016) of Little Judique, Cape Breton passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, June 12th, 2016 at Strait-Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Colin was the youngest of eight children of Isabel (MacDougall) and Alexander Livingstone, born at the old homestead in Harbourview into a hardworking Scottish Highland Catholic rural farming family, primarily Gaelic speaking. “Big Collie” had a rich and rewarding life in which “early-to-bed-early-to-rise” forever fuelled his strengths. By the time he was a young adult in the 1930s, he had received formal training in what was to become his life-long profession: carpentry. Working with his father’s crew in the local area, he helped to build many of the buildings put up in the greater Port Hood area in the 1930s. Drawn by excitement and duty, Colin joined the Canadian Army in 1942 and, in respect for his size, was quickly made a Provost Marshal on the military trains, charged with policing Canadian troops headed for the east coast (and onward to Europe) and German POWs going to various prison camps during the Second World War. It was on a stopover in Montreal in 1942 that he met the woman he was to marry, his soulmate, Elizabeth MacDonald of Pleasant Valley, Antigonish. They married September 2nd, 1944 in Montreal. Shortly after Colin’s discharge from the army in 1945, the couple returned to the farm in Cape Breton where, besides farming, he worked as a carpenter. In 1958, Colin became an in-house carpenter for the Inverness County District School Board, where he worked for the next 35 years. In his many days spent travelling up and down the Inverness County coast between Port Hawkesbury and Pleasant Bay, his visage was familiar to countless generations of Inverness County school children. After his retirement in 1978, he and Elizabeth opened up their home as a Cape Breton bed and breakfast. For the next 10 years, they welcomed guests from all over the world and provided them with a comfortable bed, a sumptuous farm breakfast and a unique, rural Cape Breton experience. He continued to be the gentleman farmer, keeping a close eye on his hay, potatoes, turnip and rhubarb. Colin was a caring son, devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and proud great-grandfather. Throughout his life, he answered lovingly to many names: Colin, Collie, Big Collie, Dad, Pop, Grandpa, Papa Judique and Big Papa. He leaves to mourn children Jean (Michael) Anderson, Avondale; Marion (Charlie) Graham and Coleen (Harold) MacDonald, Judique; Leon, Cathy (John) Cotton, and R.J. (Anne Marie), Little Judique; Ambrose of Iqaluit, Nunavut; and Sheila (Kevin) Kelly, Ottawa. Loved by 32 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, many nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Isabel; in-laws Allan and Christina (Gillis) MacDonald; his loving wife of 59 years Elizabeth (2004); and grandsons Jeffrey Graham and John Colin Kelly. He is survived by the last remaining member of his immediate family: sister Florence MacDonald, age 103, Bridgeport, Glace Bay; also sisters-in-law Mary MacDonald, Pleasant Valley; Theresa (Gordie) Pushie, Addington Forks; and Marilyn MacDonald, Westville. Arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Visitation was held Thursday, June 16th at the Port Hood Funeral Home. Funeral Mass took place Friday, June 17th at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hood with Fr. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Interment in St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery. Donations in Colin’s memory may be made to Palliative Care, Strait-Richmond Hospital, to St. Peter’s Cemetery Fund, or a charity of choice. In the words of St. Francis: “Remember that when you leave this earth/You can take nothing you have received/But only what you have given/A full heart enriched by honest service/Love, sacrifice and courage.” CAMPBELL Jeanette Campbell, of Riverville/Lower Sackville passed away suddenly but peacefully on June 21st at her residence at Lower Sackville. Jeanette (Nettie) will be remembered for her loving smile, generous heart, and never-ending hospitality. Any visit with Nettie didn’t officially begin until she had fixed her guests the most hearty “tea” one could ask for. Although she lived in Halifax for most of her working life, she was most happy in her family home in Black River where she had spent the last number of years since her retirement. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Mary (MacDonald) and Donald (Malcolm) Campbell. She is survived by her sister Whilomena and brothers Malcolm (Christina), Bryden (Patsy), Alexander (Mary), and Francis (Colleen). Nettie loved her nieces and nephews and their children like her own. Visitation was held Sunday, June 26th, with funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 27th, 2016 at Saint Mary’s Church, Mabou, with burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations to Saint Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Mabou, or charity of choice. His loving wife and close family were at his side. Johnnie lived in Halifax and was formerly from S.W. Margaree, Cape Breton. He was predeceased by his parents, John A. MacLellan and Anne MacNeil, also brothers Hughie and George. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife, Rita (Gillis) MacLellan. Margaree; Ann (Rod MacDonald) of Shad Bay; Alice (Randy St Onge) of Halifax; Kay of Shad Bay and Joan (David McIntyre) of Dartmouth as well as sister-in-law’s Jocelyne (Savard) MacLellan and Bernice (MacEachern) MacLellan. He will be forever remembered by his furry friend, Dancer. He was a long-time fan of the Detroit Red Wings and was famous for his sweet tooth. Johnnie worked as a carpenter his entire life in Canada and the United States. Johnnie was always thinking of others and willing to help out his family and neighbours. He cherished his family, including each and every one of his nieces and nephews. He could always be counted on to have Chiclets and money in his pocket for the kids. He spent hours in his garage entertaining friends with stories and laughter and made sure he gave you something before you left. If your doorbell rang before 8:00 a.m., you could count on it being either Johnnie or a courier at the door, as he was always on the move! Every year he made it home for the Broad Cove concert where he would catch up with friends and reminisce of long ago and good times shared. Johnnie’s mischievous grin and sense of humour would have you laughing before too long and set the tone for the day. His character ways will always be remembered. A visitation was held at the Sunset Funeral Home in Margaree Valley on Sunday, June 26th, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral mass was at 11:00 a.m. on June 27th, 2016 at Saint Joseph’s Church in S.W. Margaree with arrangements under the direction of the Sunset Funeral Co-operative Ltd., 65 Crowdis Cross Road, Margaree Valley, NS. Donations can be made to St. Joseph's Cemetery Fund, S.W. Margaree, or any charity of your choice. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

Margaret Mary Hamilton Born In: Mill Creek Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 21st, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Mary Hamilton, age 92, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Jane (Jessome) Marsh. Margaret lost her husband Johnnie at a young age. She then devoted her life to raising their four young children aged five years and under on her own. She was kept busy cooking, cleaning and tending to the endless chores of running the family home she built after Johnnie’s death. Mom loved to bake, sew, quilt and tend her flower gardens. She loved to sing and dance with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved watching her favourite soap opera shows and spending all her free time with those she loved. The family remembers camping trips to Ingonish, Broad Cove and Margaree spent with her children and extended family members as well as trips to the beach or down to the shore in Millcreek, on picnics, on Sunday drives for ice cream, Sunday family dinners and regular visits with aunts, uncles and cousins. Mom loved spending time with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren making each one feel they were special, unique and loved. Mom had the unique desire and ability to love unconditionally; to meet and accept people on their own terms. Mom’s love and caring extended beyond her family and friends; to the community she lived in and to St. Joseph parish in Bras d’Or where she was a devoted and lifetime member. She shared her gifts and talents at many parish functions especially as a longtime member of the CWL. Mom was a gentle, quiet and friendly person with high moral values and qualities. Her strength and love came from a heart nurtured by her strong faith in Jesus and her deep devotion to our blessed Mother Mary. Her deep prayer life of rosaries and novenas, fortified her for all the trial and struggles she would endure in daily life and also the joy and laughter of a life well lived. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Patricia Hamilton, Sydney Mines, Darlene (Alan) Gale, Mill Creek; two sons, John Lloyd (Nadine), Sydney Mines, Darrell (Lynn), Mill Creek; by her granddaughters, Alana (Matthew), Erika (Mike), Sara, Larissa, Natasha (Floyd), Tracy, Jillian; grandsons, Jason (Ashley), Aaron (Emily), Jordan (Allyssa), Colin (Jeanine), Austin (Morgan), Preston (Shelly); her great-granddaughters, Hannah, Chloe, Aveyah, Bellah, Peyton, Madison, Haley, Jayda, Elianah, Reagan, Morgan, Emma, Kenzie; her great-grandsons, Andrew, Ryan, Jax, Kalyx, Jace, Riley, Tristan; her two brothers, Melvin Marsh, St. Catharines, Ont., LeBaron ‘Bonnie’ Marsh, Waverly, N.S. and her brother-in-law, John Sandlock, Mill Creek, as well as many nieces and nephews. Bernard Arthur 'Dick' Dearing Born In: North Sydney Born: January 13th, 1945 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 20th, 2016 Our family’s journey through life begins a new path as we announce the passing of our cherished husband, father, and poppy on Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born January 13, 1945, into a strong, family unit and raised in North Sydney, Dick was the eldest son of Ruth and the late Bern (Dick) Dearing. While still a teenager, he met his best friend and the love of his life, Clara MacNamara. They soon married and over the next 51 years together, they raised their own family carrying on the same values he learned as a child. Dick became a welder, self-acclaimed “the best,” which could raise quite a debate with his father and brothers. Over his lifetime, he continued learning and became certified as an adult instructor, passing the trade skills on to another generation of welders. He eventually became an inspector with Nova Scotia Department of Labour. To say Dick loved his family would be an understatement. He was the biggest cheerleader, 24 hour on call “Mr. Fix-it” and cabbie, first for his kids and then for his grandchildren who affectionately called him “Poppy Dick”. He could always be counted on to be there when needed and he never looked for anything in return. Dick proudly served his community. Countless hours of volunteer work would see him involved with the Northern Yacht Club, North Sydney Kinsmen, Kiwanis, Fire Department, North Sydney Forum, and later, as a board member of the Northside Civic Centre Society, he shared the Allan Joseph Memorial Award that is presented to an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to the history and development of sport in Cape Breton. He worked tirelessly for the PC party and delivered meals on wheels for seniors who seemed to enjoy a conversation with Dick more than their meals. He also volunteered at the race track and was the “best Santa ever”. Even in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, Dick instinctively helped others. Dick had a magnetic personality that drew people to him and he so enjoyed his daily trips to “Timmies”. He was a Screaming Eagles season ticket holder and a devout Toronto Maple Leaf fan. Left to remember Dick’s loving ways besides his mother Ruth, are his wife Clara (affectionately called Bird), daughters Leslie (Russell) Cadwell and Betty Lynn (Paul Johnston); grandchildren Kyle, Courtney, Dylan, MacKenzie, Claralynn, and Colton; sister Betty Ferguson; brothers Greg (Sylvia), Reg (Joanne); brothers-in-law Butch (Linda), Donnie (Tammy), Dwight, Billy; sisters-in-law Brenda (Rick), Heather (John), Dale (Kevin), Carol (Blake), Wendy (Rick); as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his father, Dick was predeceased by his son, Bernie, and in-laws, Billy and Stacia MacNamara, Frankie, Marie, Molly, and Fergie. We would like to thank the staff at Harbourstone’s Wentworth Court, the CB Regional Emergency Department and the An Cala unit for the loving care you provided Dick and for the support given to the family at such a difficult time. Visitation for Dick will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2016, at St. Matthew Wesley United Church North Sydney, with Marjorie Serafinus officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society or the North Sydney Kiwanis Club. She also enjoyed listening to music and singing along to many old but goodies, and she certainly loved to get up and dance at anyone’s anniversary, wedding, or any other good time where she could rock and roll! She was also a true Maritimer who loved her lobster; even in the last few days one of the things she said was “I could eat lobster anytime!” But what she loved most was her family, and she was a feisty and funny wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. He had an extensive career and had dedicated himself to his employer: Royal Bank of Canada. He retired in 1987 after 39 years of loyal service.
