Born March 22, 1929, in Coxheath, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mabel Elizabeth (MacNeil) Boutilier. Calvin's career spanned years as a police officer in the Sydney Police Force, Director of Physical Education at the YMCA, Children's Aid Officer in Nova Scotia and 30 plus years as a probation officer. Calvin was heavily involved in the sport of judo and was one of the first men in Cape Breton to achieve the level of black belt. As an original builder of the sport in Cape Breton, he trained and coached all levels of students from youth level up to self defence for police and military personnel across the province. Some of the highlights of his judo involvement included, coaching the N.S. judo contingent for the first Canada Winter Games held in Saskatchewan in 1971, training with the great Japanese master, Hiroshi Nakamura, competing against the Japanese Navy Judo team and coaching the N.S. judo team to a gold medal at the Eastern Championships in 1973. These achievements culminated in 2013, when Calvin was inducted into the N. S. Judo Hall of Fame, being recognized as a primary builder of the sport in Cape Breton. Later endeavours and pastimes he pursued included, learning to play the classical guitar, photography and sailing the Bras d’Or lakes. Health issues restricted his later life, so time spent with June, sailing the waters of Baddeck, provided many warm and happy memories. Not to be forgotten is the companionship of his and June’s "Little Buppha". He was a member and elder of the former St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney. Louis Thomas 'Tom' LeCreux Born In: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Born: September 6th, 1957 Passed in: Canada Louis Thomas LeCreux ‘Tommy’ was born Sept. 6, 1957 in Toronto, Ont. He was raised since an infant in Glace Bay, N.S., a proud Caper through and through, he always referred to going to Cape Breton as going home. Tom moved to Pictou County in 1979 to work at Michelin, he retired in 2009. His fun retirement job was with Proudfoots Home Hardware. Tom was predeceased by his sister, Ann (LeCreux) McKenzie (2006) and parents-in-law, Bill (2014) and Chris (2012) Chisholm, who loved Tom like a son. He had a special relationship with both but especially with mother-in-law Chris, they teased each other mercilessly. Tom is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Grace (Chisholm) LeCreux originally of Glace Bay, but now of Fox Brook, N.S. His daughters, Miranda LeCreux (Hopewell) and her son, Ty; Sarah LeCreux (Westville) and her children, Brydon and Grace Ann. His parents Louie and Rodena LeCreux of Tower Road, N.S. Siblings, Alex (Lynn) LeCreux, Windsor, N.S.; Francey (Gary) Wilson, Birch Grove, N.S.; Robert (Kim) LeCreux, Trenton, N.S., Shirley (Roland) Hardy. Glace Bay, N.S.; Ted (Leigh) LeCreux, Oveida, Florida and Cheryl (Andy) Veinotte, Bridgewater, N.S.; Sisters-in-law, Liz Chisholm, Grand Bay – Westfield, N.B. and Jackie (Paul) Daniels of Egerton, N.S.; Grace’s chosen brother, Jim (Janet MacLellan) Rogers of Salt Springs, N.S. Numerous nieces and nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews. Tom loved his family; having lived his married life in a house of all women, he loved that his first two grandchildren were boys but was thrilled all over again with a granddaughter. An avid Toronto Maple Leaf fan and Toronto Blue Jay fan, he received a lot of teasing over the years because of the TML but he always said you have to support your team no matter the results. Tom loved to snowmobile and he put thousands of miles on his sled with his wife following as he took them on adventures. Some of his happiest times were snowmobiling with friends, good snow or bad. Most important to Tom was his family, a few close friends and his handsome boy, Spock (dog). No matter what life would bring him, being connected to his family was, for Tom, the very best a person could ask for. He always loved that he came from such a large family – there was always someone to play with, watch the game with, support each other in the good time and bad times. When it was learned that Tom had Lymphoblastic Leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant all his siblings volunteered to be that donor. Fortunately, his brother Alex was able to give him the gift of hope. Since his diagnosis in November 2015, Tom has shown his friends and family just how strong he was, never complaining about the hand he was dealt and never giving up. Although a quiet person, Tom loved to tease and torment us all. So when remembering Tom don’t forget to poke a little, gently stir the pot in a conversation and tease those nearest and dearest to you with love and affection. Tom is resting at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with Fr. Peter MacDonald officiating. Interment will be Macleod Cemetery, Fox Brook. Family flowers only please. Donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Canada, the Bone Marrow Transplant Patient and Family Fund (c/o QEII Foundation, 5657 Spring Garden Rd, Halifax, NS, B3J 3R4), or a charity of the donor’s choice. Barbara (MacMillan) Peach Born In: East Lake Ainslie Born: May 23rd, 1932 Passed on: July 4th, 2016 It is with broken hearts that our extended family announces the passing of Barbara (MacMillan) Peach, the beloved wife of LeRoy Peach on July 4, 2016. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Joan (MacMillan) Chisholm, Milton, Ont. and her brother, John MacMillan, Burlington, Ont.; brother-in-law, George Chisholm; nephews, Kevin and Yvonne Chisholm, Reverend Ian (Jane) MacMillan, Robert and Douglas MacMillan and niece, Brenda (MacMillan) Petite; as well as grand nieces and nephews on the Peach and MacMillan sides. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Robert and her sisters-in-law, Nancy (Wyles) MacMillan and Martha (Fraser) MacMillan. Barbara was born in East Lake Ainslie, May 23, 1932, the daughter of John Eddy and Mary Belle (Cameron) MacMillan. Barbara graduated in nursing from the Glace Bay General Hospital in 1953. It was there that she found her life’s vocation and she excelled at it. In every way, she was a wonderful nurse. She had a very wide experience in the operating room. She served at such places as the Inverness Hospital and the Victoria General in Halifax, as well as at Niagara Falls and Panoka, Alta. In the States, she was an OR nurse for 10 years at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and the New England Deaconess in Boston. She was known especially for her organizational ability. She later moved on to Milwaukee and Sacramento. In 1969, she returned to Canada and worked at Toronto’s St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was a team leader in the operating room. In Toronto, as well, she was hired by Humber College to mentor students from across Canada in operating room procedures. Barbara was always upgrading. In 1979, she graduated from the University of Toronto with her degree in nursing. Barbara and LeRoy met in Toronto and married in 1980. Over the years, she tolerated his love of the Toronto Maple Leafs and attended games with him only on the promise that he wouldn’t leave at the end of the first period. They spent many wonderful Christmases and summers at her mother, Mary Belle’s, farm at Lake Ainslie and never ceased to marvel at the beauty and peacefulness of the landscape and the culture of the area. When they retired together in 1989, Barbara embraced life in her chosen village of Port Morien, becoming the village nurse, giving injections, especially to the elderly. She was very active for several years at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, especially in the Guild and on the parish council. She was a member of the Port Morien Community Fair Committee for 28 years, the Port Morien Development Association and the Royal Canadian Legion. She was, in fact, a tireless worker in the vineyard and in a community where she was well loved. Much can be said about her character. She married in her late 40s. She was therefore able to cultivate an independent spirit, borne in part of her Scottish roots. One could say that she had a good Scottish temperament. For example, Barbara knew where she began and where she left off. She was a woman of deep faith all her life, never wavering in her Christian beliefs. She always looked for opportunities to give things to others, to serve. For example, in the Port Morien community she headed up the Heart and Stroke campaign for 11 years. Having lived on a farm, she loved animals, especially cats and mourned deeply the loss of them. All of her life she was conscious of the importance of protecting the environment. For example, she was a strict recycler. As well, she had a keen sense of justice, refusing to purchase items that marginalized workers elsewhere. Though our hearts are broken by her decline and at her leaving we give thanks to God for her character, especially her compassion. Barbara is now in the Everlasting Arms where no pain, no anxiety may touch her. Those of us who are left behind will grieve, at the same time as we continue to honour her memory, giving thanks for having her for such a long time. A special thank-you to the wonderful staff on 3 South at the Glace Bay Hospital, to Kim Martell her caregiver and friend, whom she loved dearly; to Doctors Diaz and MacLachlan and to Reverend Vernon Reid. There will be no wake. The funeral is under the direction of Patten’s in Glace Bay. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Morien, Thursday at 2 p.m., the Reverend Vernon Reid officiating. Refreshments will be served after the service. Donations accepted in Barbara’s memory at a charity of your choice. Online condolences can be sent to the family www.pattenfuneral.com <http://www.pattenfuneral.com/>. Harold Windsor MacRae Born In: Big Harbour Passed in: Bedford, Canada Passed on: June 27th, 2016 Harold Windsor MacRae, 76 of Halifax peacefully passed away Monday, June 27, 2016 at the Northwood Bedford (Ivany Place). Born in Big Harbour, Cape Breton, he was the son of George and Janie (MacDonald) MacRae. In his youth, he nurtured a love for the outdoors with fishing, enjoyed playing darts, and watching horse races, maybe even placing a bet or two on his favourites. Leaving school for work, at a young age, he developed skills in the logging trade working alongside his father and uncles. He often reflected positively on his time working with the construction crew on the Seal Island Bridge in Cape Breton. He was no stranger to hard work, and became a window salesman, which was his livelihood that brought him joy, challenge and much pride for over 25 years. In 1989, he sustained a spinal cord injury due to the removal of a cyst. His determination and perseverance over the years managing the changes to his health and the physical challenges he overcame, was inspiring to those who loved him. Throughout his life, he was engaged with others, his friendships and family mattering most, always was up for a round of golf, crib match or watching his favourite baseball, hockey or football teams. Harold had a great sense of humour, adorned himself in the warmth of the sunshine, and tried always to make the best out the most challenging times. He most recently lost his loving wife of 50 years, Sheila (Brown) and is survived by his daughter, Dana (Jeff Mills) and son, Glen. His grandchildren, Kyla, Nathan, and Sophie will dearly miss their Poppie. Harold is also survived by sisters, Isabel (Robin) Grant, Dorothy Ellsworth; sister-in-law, Rita MacRae. and many loving nieces and nephews. Brothers, Maurice, Murray, and Carl, predeceased him. Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. A celebration of life will be held at Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave., Halifax, on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 6 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choosing. Much thanks to the many health care professionals who have supported Harold and his family over the years, in particular most recently, those who provided care and compassion at Ivany Place. Lloyd Gillard Born In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: May 17th, 1930 Passed in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Passed on: June 29th, 2016 Lloyd Gillard - passed way peacefully in Toronto on Wednesday June 29, 2016 at the age of 86. He was the beloved husband of 65 years to Lorraine, brother of Lil (predeceased) Basil (predeceased), Joyce, Linnie, Harvey, Wally, Betty and Carol-ann. Lloyd was born in Glace Bay to Lance and Bessy Gillard. Lloyd is survived by 3 sons and their wives, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren Ruby MacKean Born In: North Sydney Born: April 2nd, 1924 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 25th, 2016 Like film star Marilyn Munroe and poet Oscar Wilde, Ruby Frances MacKean didn’t worry much about time. Ruby was never in a rush or played to the clock; she always arrived at her destination relaxed and refined, with aplomb and her delightful smile. Ruby passed on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Ruby had recently celebrated her 92nd birthday, yet she was very much young at heart. Ruby’s love of celebrations was the stuff of family legend: her collection of Christmas decorations – particularly an awe-inspiring under-the-tree village – was envied by family and friends. Ruby’s impeccable memory was no match for Wikipedia; she was the go-to for family lore, civic history and all things that happened before the Internet. Ruby’s passion for fashion, her business acumen and her sharp wit served her well in jobs at Canadian Tire, Lingan Golf Club, McCurdy’s department store and Harold’s women’s wear in downtown Sydney. Ruby was on the board of the Tower Heights Housing Co-operative – where she lived – for more than 20 years. Unlike Miss Daisy, Ruby drove herself; in the 1960s and ‘70s she could be spotted, wearing Jackie-O-like sunglasses and a kerchief, about town in her massive, white 1962 Buick Electra four door, hard top, which she stored at night in her mysterious, James Bond-ish underground garage in her home on Richardson Avenue. Ruby was born April 2, 1924, in North Sydney; she was a daughter of the late Henry ‘Harry’ and Emily (Roberts) King. Ruby was a member of the former St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney, and a longtime member of the UCW. In the past few years, she regularly attended The Salvation Army in Sydney. Ruby’s social circle was broad; golf and curling were mainstays – she had been an active member at Lingan and of the Sydney Curling Club. Ruby is survived by her stepson, Gerald (Wanda); nieces Major Ruth King and Rev. Shirley (Rev. Lloyd) Murdock; nephew David King (Sharon Tweedie); grandnieces Laura King, Susan King and Heidi Ruiter; grandnephew Jason Murdock; four great-grandnieces and two great-grandnephews. Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Watson MacKean. Ruby was the last surviving member of her immediate family; she was predeceased by her sister, Frances (in infancy) and brother, Claude. As was Ruby’s wish, a graveside service will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, July 12 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. A reception will follow at The Salvation Army Sydney Community Church, Inglis Street. Ruby won’t mind if you’re fashionably late. Donations in Ruby’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or any organization that does good work. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. Condolences Dr. Tarik Ali Farooq March 7, 1976 – Feb. 3, 2016 Like a solid tree, he was rooted on Cape Breton Island, but stretched his branches wide, spreading his generosity, acceptance, and kindness to his large community. His branches have now reached the stars. A loving father, spouse, son, and brother, a caring doctor, and a stellar human, may we all live by your brilliant lead. Our morning star, may you shine as brightly as your smile. Please join us for a celebration of Tarik’s life on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at 1031 Coxheath Rd.
