All those whom contacted me today, are now on my BCC list. Once we know the list is up and running for good, you will be receiving the obits double. Once from me & once from the list. I still haven’t figured out how much I can send in one message, so until I do, I’d stay on the BCC list. Carol out here in Vancouver ********************************************* Greetings to the list… The mailing list has been down since early July. With a few in August, one in September and these the past two days. I have been submitting them daily as I have since the fall of 2004. If you are a member of CBGHA, you will find all the obits there as well, as they are sent to a different email. How long this list will stay running is anyone’s guess. But if you wish to be on my BCC list, in case this happens again, send me your email address. I may at times experience problems sending them as I did a couple of years ago, when I had to resort to sending the obits in Parts - That was because the amount of letters & spaces was suddenly limited. That may be the reason why the CB Obits didn’t make it over the list yesterday, only the OBAN Obits did. Carol out here in Vancouver

On-line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Donald Joseph MacKinnon Donald Joseph MacKinnon, aged 67, died on October 18, 2016 in Moose Jaw, Sask. Donald was born in Iona in 1949, spent a few of his early years in River Denys, but was mostly raised in Christmas Island which he always saw as his first home. That was where he learned to be a hockey goalie and a softball catcher, to swim and to dive off the ferry wharf, to fish and to catch rabbits, to milk cows and to shear sheep, to drive his father’s car too fast, to charm and to be charmed by girls, to work hard and to give his best, and to become an honest, trustworthy, steadfast, generous and good man. After deciding that he did need an education after all, Donald graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1976. He then moved to Alberta where he found work in accounting at the Shell gas refinery in Pincher Creek and more importantly, found Corina, who also had moved to Alberta with her parents from Holland. Donald and Corina married in 1981 and had Sari in 1983 and Kirk in 1986. Donald was most of all a dedicated and loving father who was determined to pass on to his children the best of their Highland Scottish and Dutch immigrant roots. Donald and Corina's children honored them as they gave high regard for what was passed down to them. When the Shell plant in Pincher Creek down sized, the family moved to Grand Prairie where Donald found similar work at the Weyerhaeuser mill. Eventually Sari and Kirk graduated from high school and moved on to the University of Alberta in Edmonton where Sari met and married Andrew Faith. This resulted in the great joy of Donald’s later life, his grandchildren, Sasha and Aidric who are now six and four. Meanwhile, Kirk married his high school sweetheart, Amrita Roy. Donald and Corina had retired from Weyerhaeuser to Osoyoos, B.C. where he was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Donald courageously accepted what that meant and decided that he wanted to spend his remaining time near his grandchildren in Moose Jaw. His goal was to live long enough to enjoy the birth of his third grandchild to Kirk and Amrita in Springfield, Mass. Sadly for all, this time was not given to him. Donald is also survived by his seven brothers and sisters, Michael, Francis, Kenzie (Casilda), Billy (Sharon), Donna (Gillis), Margie (Cyril) and Mary Lou (Neil) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Annie MacKinnon. His family is planning a memorial service for Donald next summer in Christmas Island. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Greetings to the list… The mailing list has been down since early July.

CORMIER Joseph Armand Cormier, age 79, of Point Cross, passed away on October 13th, 2016, surrounded by his loving family in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Joseph Armand Cormier. Born in St.-Joseph-du-Moine, he was the only son born to Johnny (à Joe à Marcellin) Cormier and Theresa LeBlanc. After the death of Armand’s father when he was almost two years old, his mother later married Johnny (à Médée à Padé) Aucoin, a loving and doting father. A fan of Les Canadiens de Montreal all of his life, he also enjoyed a good laugh and a fierce debate. We knew he was happy when he was whistling a tune. All knew Armand as a very hard worker, a lumberjack, then a fisherman for almost 40 years. Although he was retired, he was passionate about the fishing industry and enjoyed the many visits of fisherman friends. Many who came to visit him wanted to impart of his wisdom. He continued to mentor and help the younger generations of fishers by helping them with their nets and prepping for upcoming lobster seasons. He still very much enjoyed to go out for a sail from time to time. Many will remember his love and respect of nature. An organic farmer, he always enjoyed gardening – many recognized his immaculate vegetable gardens year after year. And when cutting his firewood for the winter, he always did selective cutting. He passed all of this knowledge to his children. He also built a cottage so the family could meet often, whatever the season. Last August, his family was able to reunite at the homestead. One last time, we had quite a sing-along in the Cormier living room – a moment we will cherish forever. Armand is now in the loving arms of his God, whom he loved. Armand dedicated his life to his wife of 58 years, Isabelle (Doucet) Cormier and to his children: sons Gerry (Camille) Cormier, Petit Etang; Bruno Cormier, Toronto; daughters Betty Ann (Roland) Beaudry, Moncton, NB: Ginette (Xavier) Poirier, Point Cross; Aurélie (Mathíeu) Perreault, Dieppe, NB; brother Harvey (Jocelyne) Aucoin; brothers-in-law Harris, Willie Joe, Percy, Yvon, Donald, and Billy; sisters-in-law Sylvia and Brenda; sister Lea (Joseph Arthur) Deveaux; and several nieces and nephews. He had a special place in his heart for grandchildren Renaud Poirier, Émilién Cormier, Isabelle Beaudry, Benoit Poirier, Lilianne Cormier, Louis-Olivier Perreault, and Éloise Perreault. Predeceased by stepfather Johnny Aucoin; sister Eileen (Cormier) Connor and granddaughters, beloved little angels, Aimee and Jean Marie. The body rested at Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 17th, 2016, in St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donation may be made to Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund or Sacred Heart Community Health Centre. Condolences may be sent to cheticampfuneral@ns. aliantzinc.ca.

I AM FREE Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free I’m following the path God laid for me, I took His hand when I heard Him call I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh To love, to work or play, Tasks undone must stay that way I’ve found that peace at the close of the day. If parting has left a void, then fill it With remembered joy, A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Ah, yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I savoured much Good friends, good times, A loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief, Lift up your hearts and share with me God wants me now, He set me free. Barry D. Katherine Farmakoulas Born In: Greece Born: December 5th, 1923 Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: December 26th, 2015 It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing away of our mother, Katherine (Xidos) Farmakoulas, age 92, of Glace Bay, N.S. on Dec. 26, 2015 in Dartmouth, N.S. Our mother was the matriarch of not only our family but also of the Cape Breton Greek Orthodox Community which she loved and served with all her heart. We will miss her dearly. Katherine was born in Siros, Cyclades, Greece to Irene (Vihos) and John Xidos on Dec. 5, 1923. She grew up on her beloved island Milos and enjoyed her summers in Klima. She completed her high school education in Piraeus, Greece where she received high honours and academic recognition for her achievements. In 1940, Katherine left Greece and came to the booming coal mining town of Glace Bay. She continued to educate herself while working in the family business, Empire Shoe Rebuilders. She married John Farmakoulas and raised three children. Although she was not able to continue a formal education, she was a lifelong learner and a self-educated woman that continued to correct the grammar and mathematical errors of her educated children. In 1961 a tragic accident took the lives of many important people in her life, including her husband and brother. Katherine and her sister-in-law Helen assumed the responsibility of running the family business, Koolex Kleaners. Later, she opened her own gift store, Gifts Galore, which became a meeting place for coffee and conversation. She took on a leadership role in the Cape Breton Greek Community and was the president for the past 50 years. Her selfless love and dedication to culture, tradition and religion was the anchor of the Greek Community. Family and friends were the most important things in Katherine’s life. The kitchen at 134 South St. was always ready with hot coffee and Greek sweets for all who dropped in. Katherine’s specialty was cooking and baking. Leaving her home with an empty stomach was not an option. Her sense of humour kept our spirits high and her advice guided us to the very end. She had a Greek saying for every situation that began with, “There’s a Greek saying that says ...” On this very special Christmas day, she continuously repeated how lucky she was to be surrounded by her family. Katherine is survived by her three daughters, Irene (Louis) Angelopoulos, Eva Farmakoulas, Gloria Farmakoulas; sister Laodiki (Gerry) Lutwick; sisters-in-law, Helen Xidos and Irini Papaiouannou; brother-in-law James (Mary) Farmakoulas; grandchildren, Yanna (George) Theoharopoulos, Stefani (Konstantinos) Angelopoulos, John-Paul Angelopoulos, and her namesake, the love of her life, Katerina McInnis; great-grandchildren, Xenia, Irini and Kyrkos Theoharopoulos, Leonidas Manos; nieces and nephews Cleo (Sean) Xidos, John Xidos, Renee (Glenn) Lutwick, Emmanuel Lutwick, John (Evangeline) Lutwick, Michael (Mireille) Lutwick, John Farmakoulas, Andrew Farmakoulas, Christina (Randy) Walker, Xenia (John) Tsavos, Evi (Thomas) Papaiouannou and George (Uli) Papaiouannou; many other great nieces and nephews; and her 'adopted' son and soulmate Mike Dezagiacomo. Katherine was predeceased by her husband, John Farmakoulas, brother Emmanuel Xidos, father John Xidos and mother Irene (Vihos) Xidos. Funeral service will be held at St. Anargyree Greek Orthodox Church, Glace Bay on Dec. 31, 2015 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Theodore Efthimiadis officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Garden, 1510 Grand Lake Rd., Sydney, N.S. A place he very much loved and where he spent much of his childhood and also any opportunity to make it back for 'home' for vacations in Mira. Born in Glace Bay, Dale moved to Ontario with his mother in 1986. There he formulated such long lasting strong friendships they regarded him as family. 'Brother.' These bonds can never be broken. Dale was a graduate from Conestoga College, Kitchener, Ont. and became the Director of Talent for Bay Street Staffing, Toronto. His positive personality, kind and sensitive nature, quit wit, joy of life and the overall man he became, was an asset to all who knew him. His messages of those many grieving his loss are plenty and deeply heartfelt. He was well loved and highly respected. Dale was an athlete, he enjoyed all sports, baseball, hockey, football, volleyball, etc. and was a member of many teams. He looked forward to the "juniors" at Christmas to watch with 'The Big Guy' his stepfather Gerry whom he loved and thought so highly of. Just hours before his tragic departure he purchased them both matching sweatshirts for this year's game. There was one year where we were not together at Christmas and so he volunteered at the Kitchener Soup Kitchen. Not unusual as he had often arranged different fundraisers for different charities. He enjoyed playing the guitar, spending times with friends, living downtown Toronto and his beloved pets. Dale is the son of Diana (MacKinnon) and stepson of Gerry Furlong. He is survived by his step family; the children of Gerry Furlong namely Helene, Gerry Jr., Bradley, all in Ontario; his other 'brother', Dave, Newfoundland and their children. Dale is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Greer; aunt Carolyn (Bill) Snow; uncles, Jimmy, Billy (Bev), Sandy (Jerry); several cousins and his fur babies, Charlie and Hemingway. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will take place 3 p.m., Dec. 30, 2015 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters or Charity of your choice. I loved him in big ways, I loved him in small ways, I love him this minute. I will love him always. Even through death a mothers bond to her son can never be broken. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NS-CAPE-BRETON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
