PHYLLIS GWENDOLYN (GWEN) MACLEOD Born In: SYDNEY Born: June 14th, 1930 Passed in: SYDNEY Passed on: January 26th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we the family of Phyllis Gwendolyn MacLeod announce her peaceful passing on Jan 26, 2017, at The Cove Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family. Born June 14th, 1930 in Sydney to the late Robert Drake and Florence Nightingale Drake (MacPherson) She is survived by her loving husband, William Nelson MacLeod; children, Bonnie Lee Sutherland (Eric) Terri Ann Carabin (Les), David William MacLeod (Sandra), Vicki Lynn Marie MacLeod (Sandy) she will also be lovingly missed by 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents she is Predeceased by daughter, Linda Louise MacLeod; grandson, Jonathan Charles Carabin; sister, Marie Long-Dickson, and brother, Robert Drake. Our mother was a woman of great faith and Christian conviction. Her whole worldview bore a reflection of her faith and as such it impacted her whole life. Subsequently this life of faith impacted her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many others. This is the part of her legacy that she leaves with us (her Christian faith) and it lives on in our lives and our children’s lives. As we watched her slip away Thursday evening we know that she was transported to a “far better” place where she met her Saviour, Jesus face to face. Knowing this we are at peace with her passing even though we will miss her very much. But, we will meet again! Mom was a well-informed lady who did not find it necessary to promote herself and preferred to remain in the background. However, when asked she offered advice and that advice was always golden. Mom was very family focused. We knew we were central in her life and we knew we were dearly loved. Mom had a gift of hospitality. Our parents’ home in Baddeck was always crowded with family and friends. It was her delight to host many crowds in whatever home they were living. Mom loved adventure. Whether it was sailing, motor-biking, skiing, traveling, etc., she was just game for any of it. Together they built W.A. Macleod & Son Ltd. into a successful wholesale food distribution business. They also developed a commercial warehouse rental company Gwennel Holdings Ltd., which is still in operation today. Mom and Dad had large hearts for ministry to others. Much of my parent’s ministry together was toward helping children. Over the years they poured their time and resources into local ministries like Cape Breton Bible Camp, Munroe Academy, Riverview Sunday School, Faith Baptist Youth Group and other churches. Mom was a commissioner in the Girl Guide movement. They loved the ministries of Compassion of Canada, the Gideons, Christian Women’s Club of Sydney and many others. Mom was a founding member of the YMCA at the age of 16, where she attended until she was 82. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will be held the following day, Monday, Jan.30, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with reception to follow. Born in East Margaree, September 8th, 1949, to parents Willie and Annie-Rose (Doucet) Arsenault. My dad, Leo, lived life in an easy, simple way, but loved whole-heartedly. He loved to play cards, read his books, and to do crossword puzzles. He often did favours for people such as driving them to where they needed to go. Some of his favourite and cherished times were those spent with his son, Jean Paul. Accompanied by him while driving to work, we would listen to Fan 590, a Toronto radio station, and have many memorable conversations. In 2012, Leo wanted to spend some time with his elderly mother so he retired and moved back home to East Margaree. At home his kitchen was often filled with family and friends trying to have a conversation over the loud volume of CJFX radio or Zoomer Radio. However, it did not matter how loud the volume of the radio or how loud people talked, nothing matched the heights of his “larger-than-life personality”. Leo went to St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, and afterwards moved to Toronto, ON, where he was a key-player in the market research industry. He was “one of the few people that could be very down to earth and very professional at the same time”. The people he had worked with were very sad to hear of his passing. His friend Clyde, family members, Thomas, Clarence, Rita, his pet Chihuahua, Jack (often called his other son), and many other family and friends ensured his life was full of love and care as his health declined. In August his son Jean Paul also moved to Cape Breton to spend precious time with his dad. Leo is survived by his son Jean Paul; and sister Rita. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by stepfather Joseph Cormier; stepbrother, Marcel Armand; and stepsister, Pauline Dunn. Visitation was held at St. Michael’s Church, East Margaree, on Wednesday, January 11th. Funeral followed with Father Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation or charity of your choice. Wayne Stone Born In: St. Peters, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: July 25th, 1947 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: January 8th, 2017 With shattered hearts we announce the passing of our dear brother Wayne Bernard Stone. Born in St. Peters, he was the son of Charlie and Eva Stone. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Vernon Stone, Gordon Stone, and sister Sharon Stone. From his days of driving tanks in the army to sailing on the Gypsum boats to his days of roofing in Toronto. After taking a few wrong directions, he eventually found his way back to his Cape Breton Home in St. Peters. Wayne loved his family and friends and was a great lover of music. In his later years he put his mind and focus to playing fiddle and guitar. He was very proud of the musical talents and accomplishments of his family. Wayne had a natural talent for the art of storytelling and could hold court with the best of them, much like his father, Charlie. He seemed to remember things so vividly and could draw you into his stories as if you were there. His stories will most certainly live on but will never be told quite the same. Those who really knew him know that he had a heart of gold and a deep sense of loyalty. He was a champion of the underdog and would always give anyone a chance. If Wayne could leave the next generation with one piece of advice it would be to never blame your vices on your circumstances in life . You and only you hold the winning card and its called choice. Wayne was a loving, genuine man with a strong moral code. He was a fighter to the end. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being made by Halifax Funeral Home , Cole Harbour.
